Sister Rita Studer, SSND
Sister Rita Studer, (also known as Sister Mary Julius), School Sister of Notre Dame, age 80, born March 14, 1924, in Tony, Wisconsin, to Julius and Caroline (Wingert) Studer. She entered the School Sisters of Notre Dame in Mankato in 1944 and took First Vows in 1946. For 20 years she taught upper grades in schools in Minnesota and Iowa, before moving into teaching religious education for four years, followed by eight years in Guatemala. In 1981, she went to Washington, D.C., where she served in the National Network in Solidarity with the People of Guatemala for eight years, after which she became Eastern Regional Director of Sister Parish, working first in Washington, D.C. and then St. Paul. Sister Parish is a program in which church congregations in the United States connect in a very personal way with a parish or faith community in Central America. In 1995, Sister Rita came to Good Counsel where she continued to work part-time in the Sister Parish program.
Sister Rita is survived by six sisters, Sister Madeline, Good Counsel, and Virginia Orthel, Carol Elmore, Kay Perez, Margaret Studer, and Rose Studer, five brothers, Stanley Studer of Mankato, and Cletus, Philip, Steven, and Gerald Studer, and by her sisters in community, the School Sisters of Notre Dame. She was preceded in died Tuesday, March 23, 2004 at Immanuel-St. Joseph’s Hospital.
Memorial service 10:30 a.m. Monday, March 29, 2004 at Mankato Mortuary Chapel, Mankato, with Rev. Keith Siverly officiating.
Apay was died Tuesday, March 16, 2004, at St. Peter Health Care Center. Funeral services are 2:00 p.m., Saturday, March 20 at Trinity Lutheran Church in St. Peter with a visitation two hours before the service. born July 9, 1938, in Mankato to Frank and Sarah (Garver) Rader and she attended Mankato schools. On May 26, 1956, Marion death by her parents, 2 brothers, 1 sister and her father and mother-in-law.
Miriam Bruce
Miriam was married Forrest Bruce on January 8, 1943 in St. Paul where they lived and then moved to Stillwater. In 1954 they moved to Mankato where she worked at Immanuel St. Joseph's Hospital for numerous years.
Miriam is survived by three sons: Robert (Karen) of Lakeshore, MN, Jim (Nancy) of North Mankato, and John (Sandy) of Winnebago; two grandchildren: John Charles Bruce and Stephanie Wade-Martin; and one great-grandchild Lillian Bruce. She is preceded in died Monday, March 22, 2004 at the Lake Shore Inn Nursing Home in Waseca.
married Charles T. Brown on February 9, 1946 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Waseca. Elaine was employed as a telephone operator for 20 years at the Bell Telephone Company and she later worked 20 years at E.F. Johnson Co. in Waseca, retiring in 1982. She was a dedicated daughter, wife, and mother. She was a devout Catholic and enjoyed spending time with her family. She also enjoyed playing cards, crafts, occasional travel, dancing, reading and music. She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Waseca and was a charter member of the Catholic Daughter's of America having retained her membership for over 50 years.
She is survived by four children, Donna McLoone and David Wilker of Owatonna, D. Charles and Becky Brown of Fort Myers, FL, Kevin Brown of Waseca, and Colleen and Curt Priem of Waseca; six grandchildren, Danielle McLoone and John Theis of Kasson, Meaghan McLoone of Minneapolis, John McLoone V of Rochester, Jacob Brown and Abby Glancy of Bettendorf, IA, Melissa Brown of Iowa City, IA and Jeremy Priem of Waseca. She is also survived by six siblings, Irene Eller of Minneapolis, Sr. Andrenee Lynch of Rochester, Renee Malinski of Minneapolis, Jim and Rosemary Lynch of St. Paul, Helen and Robert Everett of Minneapolis, and Noreen and Milan Broughton of Minneapolis; four sisters-in-law, Connie Lynch of Minneaplis, Peggy Lynch of Minneapolis, Dorothy Racek of Waseca, and Rosemary Quinn of Stone Lake, WI; also survived by many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in Cemetery in Waseca.
Memorials are preferred to the donor’s choice or Waseca Area Hospice.
Laird D. Waldo
Laird D. Waldo, 83 noted for his career at Hubbard Milling Company, Mankato, MN and leadership roles in conducting numerous fundraising activities, born May 14, 1920, to Earl A. and Mary (Laird) Waldo in Minneapolis, MN. He graduated from Washburn High School in Minneapolis and attended Carleton College, Northfield, before transferring to the University of Minnesota Law School. After enlisting in the Navy in December of 1941, he entered military service at University of Notre Dame officer training school and served on board a destroyer engaged in anti-submarine warfare in the Atlantic and Pacific. He was honorably discharged in December 1945 as Lt. Sr. Grade and second-in-command of his ship. Returning to law school, he graduated in 1947.
His interest in taxation law, led him to become a Certified Public Accountant and partner in the regional firm of Boulay, Anderson, Waldo and Co. in Minneapolis. In 1958, he joined Hubbard Milling Company, Mankato, where he was instrumental in the company’s growth from a flour mill and three feed plant operations to a diversified agri-business enterprise with facilities in ten states, employing 1200 people. He retired as president in 1982.
An active member of professional, business and community organizations, he belonged to the Minnesota Bar Association, Minnesota Society of Certified Public Accountants, and the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants. He served on the Board of Directors of Hubbard Milling Company, First Bank Mankato, Mankato Citizens Telephone Company, North Star Universal, Minneapolis Education Association of Southern Minnesota, United Way, Immanuel-St. Joseph’s Hospital, Mankato Area Foundation, Mankato Golf Club, Mankato Rotary, Twin Valley Council of Boy Scouts, YMCA Camp Olson and Minnesota Taxpayers’ Association.
Other affiliations and positions included Ham & Eggs Breakfast Club, Minneapolis, Minneapolis Athletic Club, Mankato Golf Club President, Mankato Elks Club, Chi Psi Fraternity President, Phi Delta Phi Legal Fraternity President, Minnesota Republican Party – Second District Finance Chairman, Congressman Tom Hagedorn Finance Chairman, Mankato Family YMCA Director of Endowment Gift Development, Williams-Minneopa Outdoor Learning Center Finance Drive Chairman, United Way Campaign Chairman, Governors’ Task Force on Agri-business Economic Development Policy Chairman, Centenary United Methodist Church Administrative Council, Multi-Church Center Board of Trustees, and Mankato Valley Venture Capital Club. He enjoyed domestic and world travel, hunting, swimming, golfing, coconut ice cream, and was an avid reader.

Memorial services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, March 20, 2004 at Centenary United Methodist Church, Mankato, with Pastors Dean Wolf and Pam Serdar officiating. In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorials to the Mankato Family YMCA Endowment Fund or to an organization of the donor’s choice.
Earl Freundl
Earl was the first child of Philip and Rose (Mettler) Freundl. He was death by his parents, brother Leon, a sister-in-law Roberta Anderson, and brother-in-laws George Gibson, David Troutman, and Gene Lichtenberg.
