Victor H. Marti
Victor H. Marti, 88, Springfield, formerly of Sleepy Eye, died Monday, Nov. 3, 2003, at St. John Lutheran Home, Springfield. Visitation is at Sturm Funeral Home in Sleepy Eye on Thursday, Nov. 6, 4:30 to 8 p.m. and also Friday, Nov. 7, 7:30 to 10 a.m. There will be a parish prayer service at 6 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Funeral services will be held at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Sleepy Eye, on Friday at 11 a.m., with interment in the Marti Family Cemetery in rural Sleepy Eye.
Victor was born Aug. 8, 1915, in Milford Township, Brown County, the son of Frank and Minnie (Hager) Marti. He grew up and attended country school in Milford Township. Victor married Gertrude Hauser on Oct. 30, 1940, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Sleepy Eye. After marriage, the couple moved to Belgrade, where Victor farmed and drove truck for a year. Victor and Gertrude returned to the family farm where Victor farmed and worked as a diesel mechanic until his retirement. He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church. Victor enjoyed deer hunting, fishing in Canada, snowmobiling, coffee in Essig, tractor pulls, spending time with family and walks in the woods.
Victor is survived by his wife, Gertrude of Sleepy Eye; children and their spouses, Monica and Norm Warwick of Sleepy Eye, Janet Jenniges of Finlayson, Frank Marti of New Ulm, Karen and Dennis Deopere of Cambria, Diane and George Hemmeter of East Bethel, Ron and Marlene Marti of New Ulm, Anita and John Hemmeter of Finlayson, Steve Marti of Sleepy Eye, Paul and LuAnn Marti of New Ulm, Mary and Mark Haller of River Falls, Wisc., Bob and Kathy Marti of Sleepy Eye, Julie and Dick Sindelir of Morton and Beverly and DanKadlec of Lafayette; sister, Helen and husband George Lendt of New Ulm; and sister-in-law, Eleanor Marti of New Ulm. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Edwin Marti; sister, Elinor Hauert; son-in-law, Mathias Jenniges and daughter-in-law, Karen Marti.
James S. Rich
James S. Rich, 88, New Ulm, died Sunday, Nov. 2, 2003, at St. John Lutheran Home, Springfield. Services were Wednesday, Nov. 5, at the Calif., Edith Smith of Ozark, Mich., Ruth Wynkoup of Kaselof, Alaska and Mary and husband Ray DeFelici of Lander, Wyo. He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Mable Beebe and Erma Butterfield; two nieces and three nephews.
Niels Christian (Chris) Johnson
Niels Christian (Chris) Johnson, 88, Buffalo Lake, died Thursday, Nov. 13, 2003, at Buffalo Lake Healthcare Center in Buffalo Lake. Funeral services were Monday, Nov. 17, at Zion United Methodist Church in Buffalo Lake, with interment in Zion Lutheran Cemetery. Hughes Funeral Home of Hector handled the arrangements.
Chris was born June 22, 1915, the son of Rudolph and Sarah (Hansen) Johnson. He was baptized in infancy and was confirmed in the Lutheran faith in June of 1934. Chris grew up in the Sleepy Eye area where he attended rural school. On April 16, 1942, Chris was united in marriage to Violet Stage at Zion Lutheran Church in Sanborn. The couple lived in Sleepy Eye for five years before moving to a farm near Morgan. In December of 1956, they moved to Hector where they lived for three years. Chris and Violet then lived and farmed on a farm to the north between Buffalo Lake and Hector. Chris was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Buffalo Lake. He loved farming and enjoyed going fishing. He and Violet made many trips to Calif.; brother, Donald Streich of Missouri; Stephanie and husband Carl Benson of Byron; Sandra and husband Phil Nauman of Spring Valley; and Michael and wife Janice Sellner of New Ulm; 10 grandchildren; six sisters, Barbara Sliger of Texas; Karen Huettl of North Mankato; Linda Brennan of Eagan; Judy Paulson of Sleepy Eye; and Dianne Fischer of Bloomington; two brothers, Roger Klein of Sleepy Eye, and Gerald Klein of California; and sister-in-law, Dorothy Klein of Sleepy Eye. Marian was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers, James and Bill.
Marian Jean was born on June 5, 1933, to Otto W. and Dolores (Wagner) Klein, in Sleepy Eye. She grew up and attended school in Sleepy Eye, where she graduated in 1951 from St. Mary's High School. Marian attended St. Theresa's College in Winona for one year. Following her dad's death, she returned to Sleepy Eye to help her mom raise her siblings. On Oct. 20, 1953, Marian was united in marriage to Roger Sellner at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Sleepy Eye. Following their marriage, the couple resided in Sleepy Eye. Marian worked at the Divine Providence Community Home for many years and for five years until her retirement at the Sleepy Eye Municipal Hospital as a secretary. She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, Christian Mother's Society, CCW, and the Divine Providence Auxiliary. Her hobbies included sewing, embroidering and gardening.
Casket bearers were James Klein, Scott Sellner, Phil Nauman, Michael Sellner, Carl Benson and Eric Benson.
Harriet Haugen, 80, of Hanska, died Monday, March 13, 2000, at the Madelia Community Hospital. Services will be 11 a.m. Thursday at the Zion Lutheran Church in Hanska, with burial to follow in the church cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Firle Funeral Home in Hanska, and one hour prior to services at the church.
Survivors include her husband, Raymond of Hanska; daughters, Sharon and husband Arleigh Richardson, Jr. of Cleveland, Minn., Charlene and husband Mike Ogle of Melrose, Valline and husband Jim Sellner of Sleepy Eye; son, Cameron Haugen of Hanska; 13 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law, Gladys Hayes and Lorraine Schultz, both of St. Peter; and nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a son, Harmon Haugen.
Harriet Sybil, the daughter of Hans and Sarah (Nundahl) Vegheim, was born Nov. 4, 1919, in Linden Township, Brown County. She grew up on the family farm and attended Hanska High School. Following her graduation from high school, she attended beauty school in Minneapolis. She was united in marriage to Raymond Haugen Sept. 16, 1939, at the Lake Hanska Lutheran Church parsonage. They made their home in Linden Township, where her husband farmed. She worked for Kraft Foods in New Ulm for nearly 25 years, retiring in 1982. She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Hanska, and was a member and past president of the Hanska American Legion Auxiliary.
