Joel Sylvester Krzmarzick, 62, Mankato, formerly of Sleepy Eye, died Saturday, Jan. 12, 2002, at Immanuel St. Joseph's Hospital, Mankato. Funeral services were held Tuesday at Divine Providence Community Home Chapel with interment in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery, Sleepy Eye. Sturm Funeral Home handled the arrangements.
Joel was born July 5, 1939, in Leavenworth Township, Brown County, the son of Sylvester and Alyce (Soukup) Krzmarzick. He grew up and lived with his family on the farm in Leavenworth Township until 1947, when he moved to Faribault. Joel lived in Faribault and St. Peter until moving to the REM III Home in Mankato in 1978. He made his home there and worked at MRCI in Mankato. After having hip surgery in April 2001, Joel moved to Therese K. Sexton Home in North Mankato. Joel enjoyed music, dancing and participating in the Special Olympics.
Joel is survived by his brothers and sisters, Marvin and wife Alice Krzmarzick of Burnsville; Dale and wife Dorothy Krzmarzick of Sleepy Eye, JoAnn and husband Tom Seifert of Sleepy Eye, Judy Krzmarzick of Worthington and Randy and wife Pam Krzmarzick of Sleepy Eye; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Dean in 1974.
Norbert Anton Seidl, 85, Sleepy Eye, died Sunday, Jan. 13, 2002, at Sleepy Eye Care Center, Sleepy Eye. Funeral services were held Wednesday at St. Mary's Catholic Church, with interment in the church cemetery. Sturm Funeral Home handled the arrangements.
Norbert was born May 5, 1916, in Sleepy Eye, the son of William and Catherine (Haala) Seidl. He grew up and attended country school in the Sleepy Eye area and later St. Mary's School in Sleepy Eye for two years. Norbert married Viola Sturm on Sept. 9, 1940, at St. Raphael's Catholic Church in Springfield. After marriage, the couple lived and farmed in the Sleepy Eye area. Norbert was a member and founder of the Stark Baseball Association and was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1976. He was a member of the St. Mary's Catholic Church and the Catholic Aid Association. He was also a member of the Stark Creamery Board and the Sleepy Eye Creamery Board, and the Sleepy Eye Sportsman's Club. Norbert enjoyed fishing, hunting, dancing and baseball.
Norbert is survived by his wife, Viola Seidl of Sleepy Eye; daughters, Suzanne and husband Lloyd Braun of Sleepy Eye and Shirley and husband Tom Kuck of New Ulm; daughter-in-law, Jan and husband Jim Hinderman of Sleepy Eye; eight grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Leona Seidl of Sleepy Eye; and brother-in-law, Norbert and wife Bernice Sturm of Springfield. He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Martin; brothers and sisters, Minnie Schroepfer, Laura Schroepfer, Leonard Seidl, Clara Portner, Fronie Portner, Louise Tastel and Evelyn Sturm.
Audrey C. Johnson, 86, Bloomington, formerly of Sleepy Eye, died Monday, Jan. 14, 2002, at her home. Funeral services were held Friday at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Sleepy Eye, with interment in Prairieville Cemetery, Evan.
Audrey was born Nov. 13, 1915, in Minneapolis, the daughter of William and Doris (Friedrich) Caven. She grew up and attended school in Franklin and Fairfax. Audrey graduated from Fairfax High School. She married James Johnson on Oct. 14, 1940, at St. Andrew's Catholic Church in Fairfax. The couple made their home in Sleepy Eye, where Audrey worked at the Sleepy Eye Medical Clinic. She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Sleepy Eye. Audrey enjoyed traveling in Ireland, spending time with her grandchildren, playing cards, dancing, polishing her nails and being Irish.
She is survived by her husband, Jerome Johnson of Sleepy Eye; children and their spouses, Judy and Gary Goblirsch of Bloomington, Jeff and Connie Johnson of Phoenix, Ariz., and Brad and Maria Johnson of Smyrna, Tenn.; grandchildren, Tim Goblirsch, Stephanie and Rob Clarke, Kimberly and Michea Johnson, Sheila and Eric Princl, Jazmin Johnson, James "JP" Johnson and Mathew Johnson; great-grandchild Bobby Clarke; brother-in-law, Jerry and wife Colleen Johnson of Bloomington; sister-in-law, Alice Rothmeier of Faribault; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, brothers-in-law, Les and wife Francis Hansen; and Ed Rothmeier; and twin great-grand baby angels.
Casket bearers were James "JP" Johnson, Eric Princl, Jan Johnson, Craig Johnson, Todd Johnson, Bobby Hansen and Tim Goblirsch.
Veona Bertina Kaehler, 77, rural Sleepy Eye, died Sunday, Jan. 20, 2002, at her home. Funeral services will be held Thursday, 10:30 a.m., Jan. 24, at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Springfield, with interment in the church cemetery. Visitation is from 5-7 p.m. on Wednesday, and Thursday, from 7:30-9 a.m. at the Sturm Funeral Home in Springfield.
Veona was born March 11, 1924 in Vesta, to Arthur and Elsie (Kuehn) Kletscher. She attended country school near Vesta and graduated from Echo High School in the early 1940s. Veona attended Lamberton Teachers Training and furthered her education at Mankato State College. She taught at rural schools in Redwood County for five years and on Nov. 28, 1947, she married Donald E. Kaehler in Vesta. Following marriage, they moved to a farm in Leavenworth Township. Veona was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church and enjoyed dancing, gardening, reading, traveling, and her family and friends. She also looked forward to being with her grandchildren on the weekends.
Veona is survived by her husband, Donald Kaehler of Sleepy Eye; sons, Jim and wife Diane Kaehler of Springfield, Mark Kaehler and special friend Carol Brown of Sauk Rapids, Scott and wife Georganne Kaehler of Winona and Brad and wife Denise Kaehler of Anoka; daughter, Lynn and husband Jim Lally of Prior Lake; ten grandchildren; brother, Murl and wife Doris Kletscher of Lester Prairie; and sisters, LaVonne Werner of Roy, Utah, and Mildred DeMuth of Apache Junction, Ariz. She was preceded in death by her parents.
Casket bearers were Jim Kaehler, Mark Kaehler, Brad Kaehler, Scott Kaehler, Jim Lally and Kyle Medcraft.
M. Maxine Sabasko, 76, Minneapolis, died Friday, Jan. 11, 2002, at North Memorial Hospital in Robbinsdale. A memorial service was held at the Cremation Society Edina Chapel on Jan. 16.
Maxine was born Aug. 18, 1925, in Springfield, the only daughter of Lavis and Olga (Bellig) Larson. She spent her youth in Springfield, Sleepy Eye, Kassota and Lamberton. She graduated from Lamberton High School in 1943 and moved to Minneapolis, where she spent her entire adult life. Maxine worked in the pharmacy department of Hennepin County Medical Center until her retirement about six years ago.
Maxine is survived by her son, Steven and wife Barb Sabasko of Hopkins; daughters, Lynette and husband Ken Holm, and Gail of South Minneapolis; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and brother, Dennis Lynnea Larson of Sleepy Eye. She was preceded in death by her parents; and brothers, Ellsworth "Al" of Moorhead, and Darwin "Bud" Larson of Shakopee.
Mathilda Windschitl, 90, Sleepy Eye, died Sunday, Jan. 20, 2002, at Sleepy Eye Municipal Hospital, Sleepy Eye. Funeral services were held Wednesday at the Church of the Japanese Martyrs, Leavenworth, with interment in the church cemetery. Arrangements were handled by Sturm Funeral Home of Sleepy Eye.
Mathilda was born Aug. 26, 1911, in Mulligan Township, to Joseph and Christina (Hillesheim) Sellner. She attended country school and St. Mary's School. Mathilda grew up southeast of Leavenworth. On Sept. 5, 1933, she married Michael Windschitl in Leavenworth. They made their home in Mulligan Township on Michael's home farm. Mathilda was a member of the Church of the Japanese Martyrs in Leavenworth, Catholic Aid, Christian Mothers, and a former member of the CCW. She enjoyed crocheting, sewing patch quilts, gardening and working with flowers.
Mathilda is survived by her children, Marvin and wife Esther Windschitl of Comfrey, Walter and wife Margaret Windschitl of Sleepy Eye, Phyliss Wersal of Springfield, Doris Windschitl of Sleepy Eye and Gladys and husband Jerry Homan of Hutchinson; 15 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and brother, Norbert and wife Sylvia Sellner of Comfrey. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Michael in 1971; an infant son; son-in-law, George Wersal; great-grandchild, Patrick Wenisch; brothers, Hubert, Sylvester, Peter, Aloysius and Raymond; and sisters, Josephine and Gertrude.
Casket bearers were Dan Wersal, Clem Windschitl, Gary Windschitl, Leon Windschitl, Rick Windschitl and Roman Windschitl.
Willus Strate
Willus Strate, 83, New Ulm, died Saturday, March 2, 2002, at New Ulm Medical Center. Funeral services were held Tuesday at Redeemer Lutheran Church in New Ulm, with interment in New Ulm City Cemetery with full military honors.
Willus Fred Strate, son of William and Minnie (Wagner) Strate, was born Sept. 21, 1918, in Milford Township, Brown County. He attended New Ulm Public Schools, graduating in 1936. He worked for Eibner's and the New Ulm Laundry before entering the United States Army in April, 1942. Willus served in Guadalcanal and the Philippines during World War II. Following his honorable discharge in 1946, he returned to New Ulm. He was united in marriage to Lillian Fenske on March 9, 1948, in Maine; sister, Lois Berg of Park Rapids; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Emerson Strate and Glenn Strate; and brother-in-law, Carroll Berg.
Magnus James "Mag" Hittesdorf
Magnus James Hittesdorf, 86, Sleepy Eye, died Thursday, March 7, 2002, at New Ulm Medical Center, New Ulm. Funeral services were held Monday at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Sleepy Eye, with interment in the church cemetery.
Mag was born Dec. 29, 1915, in Mitchell, S.D., the son of Peter and Josephine (List) Hittesdorf. He grew up in Sleepy Eye and attended St. Mary's School. He married Ruby Marie Clasen on April 9, 1938, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Sleepy Eye. Mag worked with his father as a care taker at St. Mary's Church and later the two operated the Sleepy Eye Mattress Company, which also included a shoe repair business. He worked part-time as a truck and bus driver and as an employee at Stimpert Enterprises. Mag later became a full-time employee at Del Monte in the mechanic shop. He retired from the company in 1980 after 20 years of dedicated service. Mag, an avid sports fan, enjoyed hunting, fishing and spending time with his family. He also volunteered his time as a member of the Sleepy Eye Fire Department. He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Sleepy Eye.
Mag is survived by his sons, Thomas and wife Angie Hittesdorf of Garden Grove, Calif.; sisters, Theresa VonBrethorst of Long Beach, Iowa, Donald and wife Arlene Clasen of Pine City, Mahlon Clasen of St. Paul, James and wife Georgene Clasen of N.Y., and David and wife Lenive Clasen of Lawson, Mo.; sisters-in-law, DeEtta Hauge of Big Fork, Mont., Ina and husband Gerald Maxwell of Pharr, Tex., Hazel and husband Roman Koll of Morgan, Marlene and husband Ray Prohaska of Clear Lake, Minnesota State Poultry Association for 10 years and attended many national poultry conventions and conferences. He was elected Tracy city councilman and Mayor in the 1940s and early 1950s.
Joe is survived by his wife, Marie; four children; eight grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Casket bearers were Michael Huberty, Patricia Prokosch, John Huberty, Sara Beggs, Sean Huberty, David Huberty, Kathryn Huberty and Laura Huberty.
