Dora Turbes
Dora Turbes, 100, Sleepy Eye, formerly of New Ulm, died Thursday, March 28, 2002, at Divine Providence Community Home, Sleepy Eye, where she had been a resident for the past three years. Funeral services were held Tuesday at The Cathedral of the Holy Trinity, New Ulm, with interment in St. John the Baptist Catholic Cemetery, rural Searles. Con-celebrants were Father George V. Schmit, Monsignor Antony J. Leifeld and Father John Brunner. Minnesota. Percy served on the Stately School Board for over 25 years, and was active in Brown County Farm Bureau, serving on committees for many years.
Percy is survived by his wife, Erna of Springfield; brothers, Ward and wife Melvine Balbach of Mankato, and Lynn and wife Bernice Balbach of Springfield; sister, Dorothy and husband Walter Schenk of Springfield; many nieces and nephews; and a host of family and friends. He was a true friend and will be missed.
Ella Angeline Bloomquist
Ella Angeline Bloomquist, 99, Sleepy Eye, died Friday, April 5, 2002, at Good Samaritan Village in Mountain Lake. Funeral services will be held Saturday, April 27, 2 p.m., at Sturm Funeral Home in Sleepy Eye, with interment at a later date. Visitation will be held at Sturm Funeral Home Saturday, 1-2 p.m.
Ella was born Feb. 3, 1903, in Rosendale Township, rural St. James, to Christian T. and Elsa (Ovre) Christenson. She received her education in rural St. James where the family resided. Ella married Carl Bloomquist on Nov. 28, 1922, at Albion Parsonage. The couple lived in St. James and then moved to Walker where they operated Bud's Place resort on Leech Lake from 1941 until 1960. Carl preceded her in death on March 23, 1964. Ella's hobbies included cooking, seamstress, flower gardening, crafts and crocheting. She made many lovely things for friends and family. She was a member of St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Sleepy Eye.
Ella is survived by her sons, LeRoy "Bud" Bloomquist of Whipholt and Frank Bloomquist of Brainerd; sisters, Inga Johnson of Madelia, Mabel Larrabee of Springfield, Donna and husband Carl Schultz of St. James, and Inez Schildt of Woodstock, Ill.; brothers, Samuel and wife Marie Christenson of St. James, Lloyd and wife Helen Christenson of New Ulm, and David and wife Gayle Christenson of Staples; several grandchildren; great-grandchildren; and great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Carl; sisters, Olga Odegard, Clara Blackstad, Emma Odegard, Selma Bloomquist, and Lavina Rice; and brothers, Oliver, Clarence, Howard and Clifford.
Honorary casket bearers were Sam Christenson, Lloyd Christenson, Bopper Heiderscheidt, Bud Bloomquist, Frank Bloomquist and David Christenson.
Gordon Lammers
Gordon Lammers, 74, Butternut, died from cancer on Wednesday, April 3, 2002, at New Ulm Medical Center. Funeral services were held Saturday at St. John's Lutheran Church, New Ulm, with interment in New Ulm City Cemetery, Soldiers Rest section,
Gordon was born to Heinrich and Helena (Von Hagel) Lammers, March 10, 1928 in Madelia. He attended District 37 country school through 8th grade in Linden Township, Brown County. He then graduated from St. Paul School of Agriculture in St. Paul. He served in the U.S. Army from 1952 to 1954. Gordon married Janice Ruehl on June 9, 1956, at St. Peter's Evangelical Lutheran Church in St. Peter. They resided in North Mankato, where he worked at Hubbard Milling and farmed the family farm near Butternut. Later, they moved to the family farm where he continued farming and custom farming. Farming was a joy in his life. Gordon also enjoyed collecting antique cars and tractors. He took great pride in his cars, and drove them in many local parades. He was a long-time member of Farm Bureau and served on the Brown County Board of Directors. Gordon took an active role in his church and served there in many capacities.
Gordon is survived by his wife, Janice; son, Bruce and wife Renae Lammers of New Ulm; daughter, Brenda and husband Denny Hartman of Lake Crystal; very special granddaughters, Jessica and Erin Leiding of Lake Crystal; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Dale and Doris Felmlee and Dwaine and Millie Felmlee; and many nieces and nephews. Three brothers and three sisters preceded him in death.
Cynthia D. Macklenburg
Cynthia D. Macklenburg, 56, Echo, formerly of New Ulm, died Friday, April 5, 2002, at Valley View Manor in Lamberton. Funeral services were held Monday at St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church, New Ulm, with interment in Echo City Cemetery, Echo.
Cynthia was born July 25, 1945, in New Ulm, to Louis and Ann (Harms) Cordes. She attended St. Paul's Lutheran School and New Ulm Public School. On Aug. 21, 1976, Cynthia married Daniel Macklenburg at St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church in New Ulm. After marriage, the couple farmed in rural Echo, until Daniel's death in 1997. Cynthia has since resided in various car facilities, and had been a resident of Valley View Manor in Lamberton since January, 2002. She was a member of Peace Lutheran Church in Echo.
Cynthia is survived by her sisters and brothers-in-law, Carol and Charles Eckstein of Sleepy Eye, and Connie and Bill Smith of New Ulm; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Delbert and Janice Macklenburg, and David and Joan Macklenburg, all of rural Echo; nine nephews and two nieces. She was preceded in death by her parents; and husband, Daniel on June 12, 1997.
George M. McWilliams
George M. McWilliams, 82, Redwood Falls, died April 5, 2002, at Redwood Area Hospital in Redwood Falls. Funeral services were held Monday, April 8, 2002, at St. Catherine's Catholic Church in Redwood Falls with interment at Ft. Snelling National Cemetery in Minneapolis.
George Marshall McWilliams was born Feb. 23, 1920, in Sleepy Eye, the son of Frank and Clara (Prokosch) McWilliams. He attended St. Mary's High School, graduating in 1938. He then attended the University of St. Thomas, receiving a bachelor of arts degree in 1942. George than served in the U. S. Army during WWII. On Feb. 19, 1949, George married Janet Dempsey at Henderson. After marriage, the couple lived in Redwood Falls. George worked for the Internal Revenue Service in Redwood Falls and then was self-employed with his own private accounting practice, retiring in 1977. He was a member of St. Catherine's Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus and Catholic Order of Foresters. George also belonged to the St. Thomas Alumni Association, American Legion and V.F.W.
George is survived by his wife, Janet of Redwood Falls; children, Colleen McWilliams Wier and husband Terry of Plymouth, and Terry McWilliams and wife Pam of Prior Lake; grandchildren, Jane and Jack Wier and Colin and Matthew McWilliams. George was preceded in death by his parents; and sister, Lucille Steffl.
Dennis Lynnea Larson
Dennis Lynnea Larson, 84, Sleepy Eye, died Monday, April 15, 2002, at his home. Funeral services will be held Thursday, April 18, 10:30 a.m., at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Sleepy Eye, with interment in the church cemetery. Military Rites will be conducted by Sleepy Eye Honor Guard. Visitation will take place at Sturm Funeral Home, Sleepy Eye, Wednesday, 4-8 p.m., and Thursday, 7:30-9:30 a.m., with a parish prayer service Wednesday, 7 p.m., at the funeral home.
Dennis was born on a farm near Boy's Lake, Springfield, on April 4, 1918, the son of Lavis and Olga (Bellig) Larson. He grew up on the farm, claiming Cobden as his home town. After his father's death in 1928, he was raised by his aunt and uncle, Alma and Adolph Remmele. Dennis graduated from Sleepy Eye High School in 1936, and attended Mankato Teacher's College for a year-and-a-half, majoring in Industrial Arts. He served in the United States Army, entering the service from St. Peter in January of 1941. Dennis served in the 215th Field Artillery Unit for the Army National Guard stationed for the most part in Kodiak, Alaska, until September of 1945. After WWII, he returned to Minnesota Valley Funeral Home handled the arrangements. In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorials to New Ulm Area Catholic Schools.
Curt was born Nov. 4, 1941, in New Ulm, to Joseph and Sophia (Kuehn) Brand. He attended Catholic school in New Ulm and graduated from Holy Trinity High School in 1962. After graduation, he served in the United States Army from January 1964, to January 1966. After his discharge, Curt worked for Donahue Sanitation in New Ulm. Curt married Judy Gillick on July 3, 1970, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in New Ulm. Curt and Judy owned and operated Brand's Sanitation that they started together in 1975. Curt was a member of the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity in New Ulm, the St. Joseph's Catholic Aid Council and the Seifert Bianchi American Legion Post #132 in New Ulm.
Curt is survived by his wife, Judy Brand of New Ulm; daughter and son-in-law, Sheila and Lee McConnell of New Brighton; sisters and brothers-in-law, Phyllis and Gene Schmitz, Marlys Drill and Joleen and Warren Jorgensen, all of New Ulm, LaDonna Kissner and Doris and Wesley Guemmer, all of St. Cloud, and Carol and Jim Krueggel of Winthrop; brothers and sisters-in-law, Donald and Myrtle Brand, David Brand and Robert and Lucille Brand, all of New Ulm, Kenneth Brand of Glenview, Ill., and Marvin Brand of St. Peter. He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Diane Carley; and brothers, Lowell and Gerald Brand.
