Brooks Sellner
Brooks Sellner, 22, Sleepy Eye, died Tuesday, Nov. 26, 2002, as the result of an auto accident south of Sleepy Eye. Funeral services were held Saturday at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Sleepy Eye, with interment in the church cemetery. Sturm Funeral Home handled the arrangements.
Brooks was born Sept. 4, 1980, the son of Melvin E. and Ruth (Krueger) Sellner. He grew up in Sleepy Eye and graduated from Sleepy Eye Public High School in 1999. Brooks attended vocational school in Pipestone for a year and a half. After his schooling, Brooks worked for BCA products of Sleepy Eye. He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, Sleepy Eye and the Catholic Order of Foresters. Brooks enjoyed spending time with his friends, family and his fiance, Jody.
Brooks is survived by his mother, Ruth Sellner of Sleepy Eye; brothers, Eric and Nina Sellner of Owatonna, Shawn and Marsha Sellner of Sleepy Eye and Paul and Chris Sellner of Fremont, Wisc.; sister, Susan and husband Alan "Whitey" Hinderman of Fairfax; many nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles; fiance, Jody Borth of Sleepy Eye; and maternal grandmother,Viola Krueger of Sleepy Eye. He was preceded in death by his father, Melvin "Specks" Sellner in 1999; grandparents, Mary and Louie Sellner; and grandfather, Leo Krueger.
Ethel J. Haas
Ethel Juanita Haas, 86, Sleepy Eye, died Wednesday, Dec. 4, 2002, at the Sleepy Eye Care Center in Sleepy Eye. Funeral services were Saturday at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Sleepy Eye, with interment in the church cemetery.
Ethel was born Nov. 23, 1916, in Stark Township, rural Sleepy Eye, the daughter of Arthur and Rosella (Jungers) Bellig. She grew up and attended school in Iberia. After completing her schooling, Ethel worked on the family farm before her marriage to Joseph Haas on Sept. 14, 1936, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Sleepy Eye. They made their home in Sleepy Eye, where they owned and operated Haas Bakery from 1935 until retiring in 1977. Ethel was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, the Catholic Aid Association, and the Sleepy Eye Legion and VFW Auxiliaries. She enjoyed gardening, baking, playing cards, fishing and doing fancy work.
Ethel is survived by her husband, Joe Haas of Sleepy Eye; sisters, Elva and husband Eldred Moll of Sleepy Eye and Marge Kramer of Sleepy Eye; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Arthur and Rosella Bellig.
Casket bearers were Joe Steffl, Justin Steffl, Dean Moll, John Haas, David Lux and Paul Lux. Honorary casket bearers were Larry Kramer, Donn Moll, Robert Haas, Jerry Haas and Bill Haas.
Donna (Windschitl) Snyder
Donna (Windschitl) Snyder, 59, of Grant's Pass, Ore., died suddenly Tuesday, Dec. 3, 2002, at her home. Funeral services were held Friday in Grant's Pass, Ore.
Donna was born Dec. 18, 1942, the daughter of Norbert and Loretta (Augustin) Windschitl. She graduated from Comfrey Public High School in 1960.
Donna is survived by her husband, Marlow "Toby" Snyder of Grant's Pass, Ore.; sisters, Marlene and husband Gary Syverson of New Ulm and Joanne and husband Harvey Saathoff of Dunnell; brother, Ronald and wife Carol Windschitl of Comfrey; mother-in-law, Gladys Engelby of Mankato; and many other relatives in the area. She was preceded in death by her parents.
Bertha Belle Green
Bertha Belle Green, 91, Sleepy Eye, died Friday, Dec. 13, 2002, at Divine Providence Community Home in Sleepy Eye. Funeral services were Tuesday at the Divine Providence Community Home chapel, with interment in Home Cemetery, Sleepy Eye. Sturm Funeral Home handled the arrangements.
Bertha was born March 3, 1911, in Mulligan Township, Brown County, the daughter of Park and Theresa (Nowak) Green. She grew up and attended country school in Mulligan Township. Bertha was the care taker of Henry Groebner for many years. She also worked at Del Monte, was a cook at the Del Roy and cleaned at Divine Providence Community Home. Bertha moved to Sleepy Eye and was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church. She enjoyed visiting with family and friends and going to dances.
Bertha is survived by her brother-in-law, Irlin Messerschmidt of Apple Valley Calif.; sister, Alice Loe of Bird Island; and five grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; and brothers, John, Herman, Jr. and William "Bill" Dyrssen.
Casket bearers were Duane Siekmann, Lenny Groff, Mark Marti, Brooks Marti, Larry Krenz and Darren Gregg.
Lois Grindall
Lois Grindall, 87, International Falls, formerly of Sleepy Eye, died Wednesday, Dec. 4, 2002, at Ranier Roost Assisted Living Facility in International Falls. Funeral services were held Saturday, Dec. 7, at Faith United Church of Christ in International Falls, with interment at Ripley Cemetery in Litchfield.
Lois was born in Fish Lake Township, Scott County, to Harry A. and Marie (Doehne) McDonald on Nov. 8, 1915. she attended school there before moving to Sleepy Eye where she married Cornelius Madory at New Ulm on Jan. 14, 1936. Lois spent several years in Sleepy Eye before moving to Ogden, Utah, where she married Francis Grindall in 1943. They lived in South Dakota before settling in Duluth, until two years ago when she moved to International Falls. Francis died March 6, 1978. Lois was a homemaker and will be remembered for her great cooking and good humor. She always had unlimited patience with her pets, especially her favorite dog Cindy.
Lois is survived by her daughter, Beverly Madory Simonsen of Sleepy Eye; son, Douglas and wife Marlys Grindall of International Falls; stepdaughter, Pearl and husband Sylvester Schroepfer of Sleepy Eye; sister, Marion and Anton Peterson of South St. Paul; seven grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and seven step-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Ralph and Harry; and son-in-law, Donald Simonsen.
Delores Marie Helget
Delores Marie Helget, 77, Sleepy Eye, died Thursday, Dec. 12, 2002, at Sleepy Eye Municipal Hospital, Sleepy Eye. Funeral services were held Monday at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Sleepy Eye, with interment in the church cemetery. Sturm Funeral Home handled the arrangements.
Delores was born Sept. 4, 1925, in Home Township, Brown County, the daughter of George and Alma (Wilfahrt) Schmid. She grew up in Milford Township. Delores married Vernard Helget on Aug. 8, 1945, at The Cathedral Of The Holy Trinity in New Ulm. After marriage, they farmed together in Home Township. They retired from farming and moved to Sleepy Eye in 1955. Delores worked for many years at the Orchid Inn in Sleepy Eye. She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, the Christian Mothers and CCW. Delores enjoyed playing cards, embroidering, gardening and spending time with her family and friends.
Delores is survived by her children, Ronald and wife Gloria Helget of Sleepy Eye, Mary Ann and husband Richard Krebs of Sleepy Eye, Linda and husband Scott Peterson of Sleepy Eye, Larry Helget of Sleepy Eye, Lori and husband Thomas Deibele of Sleepy Eye, and Kathy and husband Craig Larson of Hanska; 14 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; brother, Harold Schmid of Sleepy Eye; and sister, Shirley and husband Wallace Wendinger of New Ulm. She was preceded in death by her parents; and husband, Vernard Helget on July 10, 2001.
Casket bearers were Joey Helget, Jon Helget, Billy Helget, Cori Krebs, James Peterson and David Wendinger. Honorary casket bearers were Shari Krebs, Jenna Peterson, Sandra Deibele, Katie Larson, Kristi Larson, Kari Krebs, Jared Peterson, Terry Deibele and Kevin Larson.
Orville Michaelson
Orville Michaelson, 84, Cottonwood, died Friday, Dec. 13, 2002, at Weiner Memorial Hospital, Marshall. Services will be held Friday, Dec. 20, at Christ Lutheran Church in Cottonwood, with interment in the church cemetery. Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 19, at Christ Lutheran Church and continue Friday one hour prior to the service. Sunset Burial Association of Echo is handling the arrangements.
Orville Andrew Michaelson was born May 17, 1918, in Lucas Township, Lyon County, to Carl and Aletha (Erland) Michaelson. He was baptized on June 23, 1918, in Silo Lutheran Church and confirmed June 19, 1932, in Helgen Lutheran Church in Florence, S.D. Orville moved with his family to South Dakota in 1919, where he grew up and attended school, graduating from Florence High School in 1936. He then attended Business College in Mitchell, S.D., graduating in 1938. Orville entered the United States Army, serving in the 44th Engineers during WWII. While home on leave, he was united in marriage to Ardis Nyland in the Helgen Lutheran Church in Florence, S.D. on Dec. 25, 1942. Ardis accompanied Orville to his stations in Tennessee and Minnesota, including Albert Lea, Winona, Austin, Iona, Currie and Rollingstone. From 1964-67 she taught at Lourdes High School, Rochester; from 1968-79 was missioned at St. Mary's Parish, Sleepy Eye. She retired to Assisi Heights in 1979 and did part-time tutoring. She celebrated her diamond jubilee in 1992.
Sister Mercedes is survived by her Franciscan Community and by sisters, Rosemary Biesiot of Hattiesburg, Miss., and Mercedes Bosley of Katie, Tex.
Mildred "Millie" C. Linnihan
Mildred "Millie" C. Linnihan, 75, Waseca, died Tuesday, Dec. 17, 2002, at home. Funeral services were held Saturday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Waseca with interment in Calvary Cemetery, Waseca. McRaith Funeral Home handled the arrangements.
Mildred Catherine was born April 18, 1927, to John and Ann (Kachelmeier) Ganske in Sleepy Eye. She graduated from St. Mary's High School in Sleepy Eye. Millie was united in marriage to Bernard Daniel Linnihan on Feb. 10, 1948, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Sleepy Eye. Millie and Bernie lived for a short time in New Richland before moving to Waseca in 1950. Millie worked for her son Mike's photography studio in Waseca for many years. In addition to being office manager at the studio, Millie enjoyed the creativity that came with working with customer's prints and photographs. Millie was a long time member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Waseca. She was a 50-year member of the Catholic Daughters of America-Court Sacred Heart #1424. She was also a member of the Waseca Lakeside Golf and Country Club since 1963. Millie enjoyed gardening, collecting antiques and decorating her home. She especially enjoyed gathering with friends and loved her time spent with her grandchildren.
Millie is survived by her husband, Bernard of Waseca; sons, Mark and wife Julie Linnihan of Waseca, Michael Linnihan of Waseca and Patrick Linnihan and special friend, Lynnea of Waseca; daughters, Kate Cannon of St. Louis Park, and Karen and husband Sam Testa of Plymouth; grandchildren, Christina Testa, Kevin Cannon, Sam Testa, Kelly Linnihan, and McKenzie Linnihan; brothers, Lyle and wife Myrna Ganske of Brea, Calif., James and wife Maxine Ganske of Sleepy Eye, and Tom and Karen Ganske of Sleepy Eye; sisters, Lois and and husband Al Flor of New Richland, Joan and husband Ken Jensen of Sanborn, Mary Jane Koessler of New Ulm, Maureen and husband Pete DeRosier of Burlington, Wisc., and Collette Van De Bogert of Elkhorn, Wisc. She was preceded in death by her parents; and brothers-in-law, James Koessler and James Van De Bogert.
Casket bearers were Michael Linnihan, Mark Linnihan, Patrick Linnihan, Kevin Cannon, Samuel Testa II, and Samuel Testa, III. Honorary casket bearers were Bonnie Kastner, Wilda Smith, Gladys Hemann, Gloria Butler, Dixie Enevoldsen and Virginia Collins.
