Elroy Albert Backer
Elroy Albert Backer, 74, rural New Ulm, died Saturday, March 29, 2003, at the Sleepy Eye Care Center, Sleepy Eye. Funeral services were Wednesday at the United Church of Christ, New Ulm, with interment in New Ulm City Cemetery. Colo., Joan Bollig of Seattle, Wash., and Mary Kay and husband Mike Van Allen of Lakewood, Minnesota. Charlotte married Marvin P. Christensen in June of 1940 and they spent 30 wonderful years in the New Ulm and Sleepy Eye area, where Charlotte was a housewife and worked in school and hospital clerical positions. Throughout her life, Charlotte was very active in church, school and charity volunteer work. In 1972, Marvin and Charlotte moved to McAllen where they created, developed and sold the large Colonia McAllen Subdivision on the southwest side of McAllen. They provided financing so that hundreds of entry-level buyers could get into their first home. Charlotte was active in the Central Christian Church, where she taught bible study. She was treasurer for the church Spirit Lifters group. She was treasurer of the volunteers at the Rio Grande Regional Hospital Auxiliary for many years, and was named volunteer of the year for 1999. Charlotte was secretary for the Zodiac Book Review Club and treasurer for the Current Events Club.
Charlotte is survived by sister, Betty and husband John Harper of Plymouth; sons, Curtis and wife Sandra Christensen of Pagosa Springs, Colo., and Andrew Christensen of Austin, Tex. She was preceded in death by her parents; and husband, Marvin who died in 1990.

Lois Margaret Flor
Lois Margaret Flor, 80, New Richland, died Friday, March 21, 2003, at Good Samaritan Center in Albert Lea. Funeral services were Wednesday at The Catholic Church of All Saints in New Richland, with interment in Calvary Cemetery. Friedrich Funeral Home of New Richland handled the arrangements. Memorials may be made to Waseca Area Hospice for New Richland residents.
Lois was born Dec. 18, 1922, in Sleepy Eye, the daughter of John and Ann (Kockelmeyer) Ganske. She was a 1940 graduate of St. Mary's High School, Sleepy Eye, and attended the Minnesota Dental Association Auxiliary and American Legion Auxiliary. Her involvement in the lives of her children was most precious to her. She was an avid golfer, reader, bridge player and enjoyed fishing, interior decorating and bingo. Lois also had a great interest in business and politics.
Lois is survived by her husband, Albert of New Richland; children, Dr. A. David Flor of Albert Lea, Dr. John Michael Flor and wife Jacquelyn of Blooming Prairie, Judith Ann Anderson and husband Roger of Lake Crystal, Bradley James Flor and wife Katherine of New Richland, Dr. Timothy Jon Flor and wife Margaret of Waseca, Elizabeth Marie Phillips and husband Ryan of New Richland, and Jennifer Mary Dunnette and fiance, Dave "Sharkey" of New Richland; 20 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; brothers and sisters, Lyle (Myrna) Ganske of Brea, Minnesota Valley Funeral Home handled the arrangements.
Bob was born June 29, 1924, in Klossner, the son of Phillip and Valeria (Schwendinger). He moved with his family to Comfrey in 1928, and graduated from Comfrey High School in 1943. He also attended the University of Calif., Jo Ann LeGare and Tom Solfelt both of Burnsville, Susan and husband Brian Gulden of Rochester and Jeanie LeGare of Monticello; son, Dennis and wife Eileen LeGare of New Ulm; sister, Catherine (Mrs. Roy) Samalaska of Madelia, and Mary and husband Denis Schmitz of Sanborn; brothers, Joe LeGare of Mankato, Phil and wife Doreen LeGare of Redwood Falls, Theodore and wife Marion LeGare of Hector, Dick and wife Gladys LeGare of New Ulm, Vince and wife Darlene LeGare of Minneota, and Jim and wife Sharon LeGare of Lindstrom, nine grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Phillip and Valeria LeGare; son in infancy, Joseph LeGare; daughter in infancy, Elizabeth Ann LeGare; brother, Father Paul LeGare; sister, Elizabeth (Sister Valeria) LeGare, Order of the Christian Charity; sister-in-law, Bernice LeGare; brother-in-law, Roy Samalaska; and nephew, Steve Samalaska.

Georgene "G.G." Gwendelin Rothmeier
Georgene "G.G." Gwendelin Rothmeier, 59, Sleepy Eye, died Saturday, March 29, 2003, at St. Mary's Hospital, Rochester. Funeral services were Tuesday at St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church, Sleepy Eye, with interment in Home Cemetery, Sleepy Eye. Sturm Funeral Home handled the arrangements.
G.G. was born Oct. 4, 1943, in Tampa Bay, Fla., the daughter of George and Adeline (Grams) Ubl. Around her first birthday, she moved with her family to Sleepy Eye, and later attended St. John Lutheran School, graduating from Sleepy Eye Public High School. She attended Beauty School in Mankato. On June 2, 1963, G.G. married Richard Weilage at St. John Lutheran Church in Sleepy Eye and the couple farmed in rural Sleepy Eye. G.G. worked as a beautician for 35 years in various shops in the Sleepy Eye area and most recently, she worked at the Cenex Convenience Store. On May 1, 1987, G.G. married Raymond Rothmeier and they remained in Sleepy Eye. She was a member of St. John Lutheran Church and a member of the Legion Auxiliary. G.G. loved helping others and always let the needs of others come first. She enjoyed spending time with her children and grandchildren, working on craft projects and sewing. G.G. looked forward to reuniting with her father, husband, and other loved ones that have passed on before her.
G.G. is survived by her children, Suzanne Marie and husband Tom Jensen of Sleepy Eye, Michelle Myree Weilage and special friend Leonard Hauser of Essig, Kristine Maree and husband Brad Bode of Sleepy Eye, and Michael and wife Stephanie Weilage of Sleepy Eye; grandchildren, Ryan Gehrke, Erica Jensen, Carly Jensen, Krystle Weilage, Benjamin Bode, and Mikyla and Randy Weilage; step-children, Kim Kleinwachter, Vicky Steffl, Amy Houchens, Mike Rothmeier and Rick Rothmeier; step-grandchildren; mother, Adeline Ubl; and sister, Cynthia (Cindy) and husband Roger Schneider of Sleepy Eye. She was preceded in death by her father, George Ubl; husband, Raymond G. Rothmeier; and a step-grandson.
Casket bearers were Arnie Hinderman, Rich Zuhlsdorf, Mike Zuhlsdorf, Rick Mages, Larry Tessmer and Rick Tessmer. Honorary casket bearers were Richard Weilage, Rick Rothmeier, Matt Krieger, Dean Meinhart, Mike Rothmeier, Tom Kleinwachter, Erick Houchens and Ed Treml.

Rosalia Ann (Mrs. John) Zwaschka
Rosalia Ann (Mrs. John) Zwaschka, 84, rural Comfrey, died Saturday, March 29, 2003, at Springfield Medical Center Hospital. Funeral services were Wednesday at St. Paul's Catholic Church, Comfrey, with interment in the church cemetery. Organist for the service was Jane Altenhofen and hymns were sung by St. Raphael's Choir.
Rosalia was born March 24, 1919, in Eden Township, Brown County, the daughter of Joseph and Mary (Gewerth) Mathiowetz. She attended country school in Eden Township and St. Mary's Boarding School. Following school, Rosalia worked at home until her marriage to J. John Zwaschka on June 14, 1937, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Sleepy Eye. They made their home on the family farm in Adrian Township, Watonwan County. Rosalia worked as a teachers aid at St. Paul's Catholic School and part-time at Colburn's Store. She was a former member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Sleepy Eye, and has been a long-time member of St. Paul's Catholic Church in Comfrey. Rosalia was part of the Christian Mothers and St. Mary's Society in Comfrey. She enjoyed education, traveling and was proud of having traveled to all 50 states, Europe, Canada, Australia and New Zealand, all after the age of 51. In the winter, she embroidered "personal memory" quilts and in the summer, she liked working in the flower gardens and spending time on the swing. Rosalia liked family gatherings, especially Christmas. She was a marvelous cook and was famous for her caramel rolls and chocolate chip cookies. At the age of 79, she completed one of her lifetime goals when she was granted her GED in 1998. Rosalia liked to play scrabble, reading to the family, especially her grandchildren, and could quote a poem for any occasion.
Rosalia is survived by her husband, John of Comfrey; sons, Kenneth and wife Mary Ann Zwaschka of Des Moines, Calif., and Evelyn Betts of Fairmont; sisters-in-law, Lorraine Mathiowetz of Hector and Marie Mathiowetz of Clements. She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Raymond Mathiowetz, Leo Mathiowetz and Norbert Mathiowetz; and a sister in infancy.
Casket bearers were Bob Sprenger, Delwin Junker, Brad Sprenger, Jim Schneider, Dave Raney and Dr. Herbert Holman.

Helen Ione Herigstad
Helen Ione Herigstad, born May 6, 1928, in Sleepy Eye, died March 25, 2003. She is survived by her loving husband of 43 years. Russel Herigstad; children, Gary Herigstad, Jackie Ericson (Carl), and Kathy Herigstad; grandchildren, Christine (Elric) and Michael; great-grandchild, Kyndahl; sisters, Lorraine Iowa, died Friday, April 4, 2003, at the I.O.O.F. Home in Mason City. Funeral Services were Tuesday at Zion Lutheran Church in Clear Lake, with a private family committal service at Clear Lake Cemetery. The Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel of Clear Lake handled the arrangements. Memorials can be given to the Harmony Ranch in memory of Roland.
Roland (Rollie) was born Aug. 4, 1912, the 11th child of T.E. and Sophia M. (Nelson) Hier. He was united in marriage to Margaret E. Iowa.
Rollie is survived by daughters, Becky and husband Richard Finstad of Clear Lake and Barbara and husband Gerald Suelter of Oxnard, Iowa, Jim and wife Tristi Finstad of Clear Lake, Molly and husband Brad Harris of Clear Lake, Shelley and husband Chris Daniels of Virginia Beach, Va., Suzie Martin of Garberville, Calif., Becky Suelter of Oxnard, Calif.; grandchildren, William and Jack Finstad, Tucker and Madison Finstad, Haley Etzel, Wyatt and Becca Daniels and Ian Suelter; and sister, Charlotte Hansen of Sleepy Eye. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Margaret; eight brothers and six sisters.

Frances Paulson
Frances Paulson, 86, Sleepy Eye, died Wednesday, April 2, 2003, at the Sleepy Eye Care Center of Sleepy Eye. Funeral services were Saturday at Faith United Methodist Church, Sleepy Eye, with interment in Prairieville Cemetery, Evan. Sturm Funeral Home handled the arrangements.
Frances was born Feb. 2, 1917, to Edgar and Minnie (Frederickson) Rice in Hanska. She moved with her parents to Prairieville Township as a teenage girl. Frances met and later married Clarence Paulson on April 3, 1935, in Hanska. The couple farmed in Prairieville Township until retirement and continued to live on the family farm until October of 2001, when they moved to the Sleepy Eye Care Center. Frances enjoyed gardening, County Extension, 4-H, Ladies Aid, square dancing, furniture refinishing and upholstery and caning. She was a member of Faith United Methodist Church of Sleepy Eye.
Frances is survived by her husband, Clarence Paulson of Sleepy Eye; daughter, Kay and husband Dennis Jensen of Eagle, Idaho; sons, Dean and wife Shirley Paulson of Glenwood, and Jim and wife Louise Paulson of St. James; eight grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; sister, Vivian Paulson of Edinburg, Tex.; brother-in-law, Don and wife Elinor Paulson of Bloomington; sister-in-law, Lorraine Rice of the Twin Cities; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; and brother, Milton Rice.
Casket bearers were Doug Paulson, John Paulson, Todd Paulson, Mike Paulson, Brad Paulson, Josh Paulson, Lynda Fosburg and Kevin Fosburg.
