Beatrice Mae Schottenbauer
Beatrice Mar Schottenbauer, 87, Fairfax, formerly of Sleepy Eye, died Sunday, April 6, 2003, at Fairfax Community Home. Funeral services were Wednesday at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Sleepy Eye, with interment in the church cemetery. Sturm Funeral Home handled the arrangements.
Beatrice was born May 24, 1915, in Sleepy Eye, the daughter of James and Mathilda (Fehmer) Barnes. She grew up in Sleepy Eye and after graduating from high school, she married Harold Steffl on Aug. 21, 1933, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Sleepy Eye. The couple made their home in Home Township, where they farmed for many years. Harold preceded her in death in 1972. Beatrice married Otto Schottenbauer on March 2, 1973, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Sleepy Eye. They made their home in Sleepy Eye. Otto preceded Beatrice in death in 1993. Beatrice was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, the N.C.S.F. and the C.A. She was a good cook and enjoyed crocheting and making afghans.
Beatrice is survived by her children, Barbara Riebel of Bloomington, James and wife Marilyn Steffl of Morristown, Leo and wife Grace Steffl of Sleepy Eye, David Steffl of Flat River, Mo., Dianne and husband Fred Kienlen of Fairfax, Thomas and wife Sheila Steffl of Newton, Kans., and Greg Steffl and special friend, Sheri Sellner of Sleepy Eye; 40 grandchildren; and many great and great-great-grandchildren; sister, Fanchon Bertrand of Sleepy Eye; and brother, William Barnes of Novato, Iowa; grandchildren, Jennifer and husband Jay Flaten, Angela and husband Alex Lazatin, Bobbie Ann and husband Scott Griffin, James and wife Kristi Koenigs, Melissa Koenigs and Andrew Koenigs; six great-grandchildren; sister, Bert Creaser of Watertown, S.D.; sisters-in-law, Margaret Gluth of Springfield, Cele Gluth of Rush City and Margie Gluth of Iowa. As a infant, she moved with her family to Sleepy Eye, where she attended public school and was active in 4-H for many years. DeLoris married Lester Schreyer on Sept. 10, 1940, at St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church in New Ulm. Following her husband's death Feb. 10, 1987, DeLoris continued to make her home in New Ulm. She has been an active member of St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church since marriage. Working with the quilters group of the church has been her pride and joy for many years and she was a lifelong cat lover.
Survivors include sisters-in-law, Orlean Anderson of Sleepy Eye and Luverna Juni of New Ulm; brothers-in-law, Gilbert Schreyer and his wife Peggy of New Ulm, Carl Larson of Gaylord; godson, Bill Conrad of Minneapolis; two special young ladies, Jodi and Becky Schmidt of New Ulm; nieces, nephews, and cousins. In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by brothers, Lloyd, Verle J. and Lowell (Bud) Anderson.
Eugenia A. "Genie" Berdan
Eugenia A. "Genie" Berdan, 87, Sleepy Eye, died Sunday, April 20, 2003, at Divine Providence Community Home in Sleepy Eye. Funeral services were Wednesday at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Sleepy Eye, with interment in the church cemetery. Sturm Funeral Home handled the arrangements.
Genie was born Feb. 6, 1916, in Sigel Township, Brown County, the daughter of Clara Ubl. She grew up and attended school in Sleepy Eye, graduating from St. Mary's High School. Genie married Henry M. Berdan on July 7, 1936, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Sleepy Eye. The couple made their home in Sleepy Eye, moving to Austin for a short time, and then returning to Sleepy Eye, where they made their home for many years. Genie worked at St. Mary's School as a cook, serving desserts for many years. She also worked as an aid at Divine Providence Community Home. Genie was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church where she was active in ladies groups, making quilts for the bazaar and helping with funeral lunches. Genie also helped at Next-Tu-Nu-II was involved in bible study groups, helped with church cleaning and she enjoyed gardening.
Genie is survived by her children, Barbara and husband Bill Rasmussen of Durango, Minnesota Valley Funeral Home handled the arrangements.
Vera was born June 4, 1914, in New Ulm, to John and Anna (Held) Richter. She married Albert Gag on June 21, 1932, at the Holy Trinity Catholic Church in New Ulm. Vera worked at Woolworth's in New Ulm and later was a cook at Holy Trinity Catholic School for 25 years. Vera was a member of The Cathedral of the Holy Trinity Church, a member of the funeral choir at church, a member of the Christian Mothers Society and the St. Anne's Court #389, N.C.S.F.
Vera is survived by her daughters and son-in-law, Donna and Marvin Roiger of Springfield and Beverly Schaefer of Pacheco, Calif.; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Albert Gag on May 15, 1999; three grandchildren; brother, John "Hans" Richter and a brother in infancy.
Harold E. Wiltscheck
Harold E. Wiltscheck, 82, New Ulm, died Monday, April 14, 2003, a his home. Funeral services were Monday at The Cathedral of the Holy Trinity Church, New Ulm, with interment in the New Ulm City Cemetery's Soldier's Rest Section. New Ulm Veterans Organizations conducted full military honors. In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorials to the donor's choice.
Harold was born July 7, 1920 in Sigel Township, Brown County, to Otto and Frances (Berg) Wiltscheck. He attended District #50 Country School and worked on the family farm until he entered the United States Army in 1942. He was assigned to an anti-aircraft unit at Camp Haan, Colo., daughter and son-in-law, JoAnne and Doug Hacker of Ellendale; sons, Richard Wiltscheck, Gene Wiltscheck and special friend, Kris Forst, all of New Ulm; sons and daughters-in-law, Gary and Ann Wiltscheck, Alan "Smiley" and Mary Lou Wiltscheck and Randy and Carol Wiltscheck, all of New Ulm; daughter-in-law, Norma Wiltscheck of Sterling Heights, Mich.; sisters, Florence Wiltscheck of Gibbon and Esther Prahl of Searles; sister-in-law, Marie Wiltscheck of Gibbon; 21 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Robert Wiltscheck; and brothers, Stanley, Jerome and Dennis "Sonny" Wiltscheck.
Verna Bertha Trebesch
Verna Bertha Trebesch, 95, Sleepy Eye, died Wednesday, April 23, 2003, at the Sleepy Eye Care Center in Sleepy Eye. Funeral services were Saturday at Trinity Lutheran Church, Sleepy Eye, with interment in Home Cemetery, Sleepy Eye. Sturm Funeral Home handled the arrangements.
Verna was born March 29, 1908, in Leavenworth Township, Brown County, the daughter of Henry and Pauline (Guhlke) Meinert. She grew up and attended country school in Leavenworth Township. On April 23, 1930, Verna married Arthur Trebesch of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Springfield. The couple made their home in Leavenworth Township, where they lived and farmed for many years. In 1972, they retired from farming and moved to Sleepy Eye. Arthur preceded Verna in death in 1973. Verna worked in the kitchen at Sleepy Eye Public School for 10 years. She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church and the Sarah Circle.
Verna is survived by her daughter, Eunice Windschitl of Sleepy Eye; son, Patrick and wife Nancy Trebesch of Aubrey, Tex.; daughter-in-law, Bernus Trebesch of Sleepy Eye; seven grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; and sister, Lillian Schneider of Sleepy Eye. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Arthur; son, Myron on Sept. 28, 2001; sisters, Luella Krebs and Laura Schmitz; brothers, Wilbert Meinert and Alvin Meinert; son-in-law, Lenus Windschitl; and brother-in-law, Rueben Schneider.
Hazel K. Bauer
Hazel K. Bauer, 85, Sleepy Eye, died Saturday, May 3, 2003, at Sleepy Eye Care Center in Sleepy Eye. Funeral services were Wednesday at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Sleepy Eye, with interment in Home Cemetery, Sleepy Eye. Sturm Funeral Home handled the arrangements.
Hazel was born April 3, 1918, in Morgan, the daughter of Charles and Edna (Ellis) Picker. She graduated from Wabasso High School. Hazel married John Bauer on Oct. 26, 1938, at St. Peter and Paul's Catholic Church in Glencoe. Hazel and John owned and operated the Sleepy Eye Greenhouse for 41 years until her retirement in 1990. She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Sleepy Eye and the Isaac-Radl Auxiliary VFW Post 800. Hazel loved sports and especially was an avid fan of the Twins and Vikings. She loved spending time with her family, which created many fond memories.
Hazel is survived by her son, Mike Bauer of Sleepy Eye; daughters, Kathy and husband Glen Turbes of Willmar and Mary Jo and husband Dale Evers of Sleepy Eye; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; sisters, Carol Bartles of Crosby, Helen Radde of Watertown, and Jeanne and husband Hooch Hansen of Sleepy Eye; sister-in-law, Louise Bauer of New Ulm and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband John; sisters, Pearl Lindeman and June Mock; brothers-in-law, Alfred Bauer and George Bauer; Elmer Bartles; Fred W. Radde; Joe Mock and Martin Lindeman; and granddaughter, Mary Marie Bauer.
O. Lloyd Friton
O. Lloyd Friton, 82, Sleepy Eye, died Saturday, May 3, 2003, at Meeker County Medical Center in Litchfield. Funeral services are Thursday, May 8, 2:30 p.m. at Faith United Methodist Church in Sleepy Eye, with interment in Home Cemetery, Sleepy Eye. Visitation is Wednesday, 4-8 p.m. at Sturm Funeral Home and continues one hour prior to the service at the church.
Lloyd was born May 31, 1920, in Stark Township, Brown County, the son of Otto and Emma (Sommerfeld) Friton. He grew up on the family farm and attended country school in Stark Township for a couple of years. Lloyd then attended and graduated from Sleepy Eye Public High School. After graduation, Lloyd continued to raise registered Brown Swiss cattle on the family dairy farm with his brother, Eugene. He married Dolores Peterson on April 28, 1946, in Evan and the couple made their home on the family farm where they have lived until the present time. Lloyd was a member of Faith United Methodist Church in Sleepy Eye and a life member of the Brown Swiss Association.
Lloyd is survived by his wife, Dolores Friton of Sleepy Eye; children, Grant and wife Verna Friton of Sleepy Eye, Eunice and husband Kevin De Garmo of Cannon Falls, Douglas and wife Kelly Friton of Sleepy Eye, Mark and wife Debra Friton of Chandler, Ariz., Betty and husband David Mack of Sleepy Eye and David and wife Tracy Friton of East Bethel; 17 grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Rodney Friton; brothers, Oscar Friton, Ellsworth "Pork" Friton, Edmond Friton and Eugene Friton; sisters, Alice and Laura; and grandson, Garry Alan.
Gertrude C. Hillesheim
Gertrude Catherine Hillesheim, 80, Sleepy Eye, died Sunday, May 4, 2003, at Bethesda Hospital in St. Paul. Funeral services are Friday, May 9, 11 a.m., at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Sleepy Eye. Visitation is Thursday, 4-8 p.m. and Friday, 7:30-10 a.m., at Sturm Funeral Home in Sleepy Eye. There will be a Christian Mothers rosary at 4 p.m. and a parish prayer service at 7 p.m., both on Thursday at the funeral home.
Gertrude was born May 3, 1923, in Mulligan Township, Brown County, the daughter of Joseph and Theresa (Schumacher) Fischer. She grew up on the family farm and attended District #42 Mulligan Township Country School and attended St. Mary's High School in Sleepy Eye. Gertrude married Kenneth Hillesheim on Nov. 18, 1947, at The Church of the Japanese Martyrs in Leavenworth. They resided in the Leavenworth area for several years and then moved to Sleepy Eye in 1960. Gertrude was a housewife and worked various jobs outside the home. She worked for Pietrus Foods Company until she retired. Gertrude was a member of the St. Mary's Catholic Church in Sleepy Eye, the Christian Mothers, CCW and Divine Providence Auxiliary. Gertrude enjoyed knitting and crocheting, playing the guitar, sewing for her family and doing crossword puzzles. She collected angels and was a Medjugorje follower.
Gertrude is survived by her children, Barbara and husband Timothy Kleiter of St. Paul, Carol Hillesheim of Burnsville, Michael and wife Marian Hillesheim of Maple Grove, Patrick Hillesheim of Sleepy Eye, Marilyn and husband Mike Schauman of Sleepy Eye, Joanna and husband Jeff Schmid of Sleepy Eye, Kenwyn and husband Rich Evers of Olivia, Maggie and husband Jim Schroepfer of Sleepy Eye and Robert and wife Dana Hillesheim of Buffalo Lake; 15 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; brothers and sisters, Elizabeth Fischer of Springfield, Josephine Lang of Springfield, Teresa Fischer of Minneapolis, Dorothy Fischer of Mankato and Valentine Fischer of Minneapolis; sister-in-law, Jean Fischer of Sioux Falls, S.D.; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Kenneth W. Hillesheim; brothers, Alfred and John Fischer; and sister, Sr. Myrna (Margaret) Fischer.
