He joined a threshing crew, met Edith Wendroff, and they married August 2, 1929 in Minnesota, and lived with his older sister, Ruth, and her husband, Benny DeBoer, and their children. It was there in Pine City, while still in high school, that Clarence began to work at the Gamble Hardware Store.
On Sunday, June 16, 1940, Clarence met Bernice at the East Rock Creek Baptist Church and offered to give her and her sister, Betty, a ride to a youth rally at South Isanti Baptist Church. From that day forward Clarence and Bernice were a “twosome.”
In October of 1942, Clarence enlisted in the United States Coast Guard where he was stationed on the East Coast. While there, he made and sent a record to a sweetheart Bernice, “You Are My Sunshine.” In 1943 Clarence proposed marriage to Bernice. On February 20, 1945, while on a short leave, they were happily married in Bernice’s parents’ home. In December of that same year Clarence became a veteran of WWII, and he and Bernice moved to Hinckley. It was there in Hinckley that he started to sing for the Lord and once again Clarence found himself working for Gambles Hardware Store. In 1948 he became the proud father of a little girl, Joan Marie. In 1949 Clarence and Bernice settled on Bernice’s paternal farm in rural East Rock Creek. Clarence was reunited with the East Rock Creek Baptist Church, and later that year he welcomed another little girl into his life and named her Louise Ellen.
Clarence continued to praise the Lord, not only by his example but by singing praises to Him. He sang with Bernice, sang “Whiter Than Snow” with his little girls and sang gospel hymns with his Christian friends. In 1956, God blessed him with yet another little girl, Beverly Sue. In March of 1959 Clarence and his family were led to Cambridge where he owned and operated the Gambles Hardware Store and enjoyed fellowship and friends at the First Baptist Church. In 1976 Clarence retired for one year until he began working at the Plumbery in 1977. It wasn’t until 1997 that Clarence decided to retire again.
Clarence was always busy working on a project. He was active with the Gideons, Meals on Wheels, the Sr. Committee and the Property Committee. He was a deacon and an usher, a member of various prayer groups, he socialized with his buddies, and traveled here and there to spend time with his family, friends and relatives. He continued to sing and brought joy to all that heard him.
Clarence was a loving husband for 54 and a half years. He was the most precious of Dads to three girls and the sweetest Grandpa to five grandchildren. All of this Clarence did in the name of God.
On August 31, 1999, Clarence began another journey. This 40 day journey led him to those Pearly Gates in the sky where he met his Lord on Sunday, October 10, 1999. Clarence has now reunited with his loved ones and his dear friends that were one step before him.
