Eddie was born September 3, 1917 in Aurora County, S.D. to immigrant Norwegian parents who settled and farmed there. Following his education in the Letcher, S.D. area, he served with the CCC and then moved to Minneapolis and enrolled in Dunwoody Institute to learn the machinist trade. From Dunwoody, he was hired by Mpls. Honeywell. In 1942 he married Alverna Larson. In 1943 he was inducted into the U.S. Army. After basic training, he was assigned to the Army Engineers in Europe where he maintained pipelines that supplied fuel for the Allied Forces in World War II. After the war they lived in Minneapolis and then Monticello before moving to Cambridge. Eddie continued to commute to Minneapolis to work, but when there were lapses in the machinist trade, he hired out to a building construction firm, and later built a number of new homes in the Cambridge area.
