Donald W. Peterson
A memorial service was held January 27, 2001 at Braham Ev. Lutheran Church for Donald W. Peterson of Braham. Rev. Richard Chronis officiated. Music was provided by Marie Grundberg and Ruth Grundyson. Burial will be in the spring at Stanchfield Baptist Cemetery. Military flag presentation was made by Braham VFW Post #1731.
Donald W. Peterson, age 82, died Jan. 10 at Birchwood Health Care Center in Forest Lake.
He was born April 7, 1918 in Cambridge, to August and Tillie Peterson. He graduated from Cambridge High School and joined the army where heserved in Europe during WWII. Upon returning home he married Fern Marcelle Quarnstrom on April 7, 1946 at Cambridge Lutheran Church. The couple moved to Braham where Donald became owner and operator of Braham Feed Mill. He was very involved in community affairs over the years, having been a member of the Commercial Club, Volunteer Fireman, Rice Lake Cemetery Board, Park Manor Board, a driver for Meals on Wheels, as well as an active member of his church. Donald enjoyed his many hunting and fishing trips with friends and family, bowling, golfing, snowmobiling, yardwork, watching sports on TV and his time spent at the cabin at Mille Lacs Lake. Keeping the bird feeder full was always a top priority during the winter months!
Fern died in January 1993 after a lengthy illness. In December 1998, Donald moved to an assisted living residence, Happy Tracks, west of North Branch. In November 2000, due to failing health, he moved to Birchwood Health Care Center in Forest Lake. He was a member of Braham Evangelical Lutheran Church at the time of his death.
In addition to his wife, Fern, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Carl, Mike, Burt and Aldean; granddaughter Amanda, and his cousin Harley.
He is survived by sons, Bradley (Julie) Peterson of Oakdale, and Murray (Beverly) Peterson of Marshall, MN, daughter Jill Peterson of Milwaukee, Wi., grandchildren, Erica, Jared, Krystina, and Matthew, brother Budd (Ruth) Peterson of Cambridge; his cousin Meyers (Daphne) Peterson of Cambridge; special acquaintance, Millie Melin, and his toy poodle “Tucker”.
Arrangements were by Rock Mankie Burial and Cremation Services of Braham.
Leonard Clark
Leonard Ernest Clark, 83, of Cambridge, died January 23, 2001 at Cambridge Medical Center.
Services were held Jan. 27 from Oxlip Evangelical Free Church with Rev. LeRoy Scheumann officiating. Music was by Donald, Marian and Charles Thompson. Organist was Mary Kay O’Neill. Burial was in Wyanett Free Cemetery with Mark Sikkink, Mike Nyberg, Shaw Clark, Jonathan Thompson, Craig Holm and Jeremy Clark as pallbearers.
He was born in Hinton, IA. April 1, 1917 to Ernest and Mae (Hauser) Clark. He lived in Hinton until he was 13 when his family moved to Pine City where he attended country school. After school he worked as a farm hand for a few years. On November 9, 1936 he married Isabel Moffatt at Elk Point, S.D. and they lived in Pine City before moving to Hinckley. They lived there until 1964 when they moved to Cambridge. Leonard worked at the Edin Ford Garage in Hinckley for quite a few years as well as Midway Ford, Power Brake and Wheel Service in St. Paul. He retired from Wheel Service in 1979. Following retirement, the couple traveled as well as built a home near Skogman Lake. Leonard was active in the Wyanett, Dale and Oxlip Evangelical Free churches. He enjoyed woodworking, fishing, hunting and loved music as well as playing his guitar. He was a member of the Salem Covenant String Band from St. Anthony. He especially enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by four brothers and by his infant daughter, Isabel.
He is survived by his wife, Isabel of Cambridge; children, Judy (Lloyd) Sikkink of Gilbert; Brenda (Leonard) Nyberg of Bonita Springs, FL:; Leonard Jr. (Cathleen) Clark of White Bear Lake; Paulette (Dennis) Wyoming, MN. January 24, 2001, as the result of cancer.
A memorial service was held Jan. 27 from Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church with Rev. Brian Fragodt and pastor Tessa officiating. Musicians were pastor Brian and Kim Fragodt.
He was born in Reedsburg, WI. April 16, 1948 to Henry and Dorothea Garske. He was raised in Mauston, WI. where he attended school. Robert then joined the Air Force where he served for four years. On May 22, 1971 he married Karen Nagy at Eagle River, WI. and the couple moved to the East Bethel/Wyoming; children, Mike of Woodbury; Tom of Roseville and Katie of Texas, formerly of Cambridge, Anoka and Minneapolis, died February 4, 2001.
Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Feb. 10 from Trinity Lutheran Church in Princeton with burial in Wyanett Cemetery. Pallbearers will be her grandsons, Dan and Dean Wicktor, Bradley, Scott, Dennis, Calvin, Darin and Dana Dillon, Glen Hansen and Shawn Stene. There will be visitation for one hour at the church prior to the service.
She was born in Cambridge February 13, 1910 to John O. and Matilda (Lindquist) Sandstrom. She married Robert M. Dillon August 30, 1932 in Hudson, WI. and they lived in Minneapolis, Anoka, and Cambridge prior to retiring to Yuma, A. They later moved to San Antonio, TX; daughters, Barbara (Russell) Wicktor of Princeton; Beverly (Milton) Lien of Battle Lake; and Donna Mae (Kenneth) Hanson of San Antonio; daughter-in-law, Shirley Dillon of South haven, MN; 18 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren.
Nancy Peterson
Nancy M. Peterson, 59, of Long Prairie, MN., formerly of Cambridge, died unexpectedly February 2, 2001 at St. Cloud Hospital.
Visitation will be held from 3-8 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 6 at Stephan-Stein Funeral Home in Long Prairie and for one hour prior to the service at the church.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 7 at American Lutheran Church in Long Prairie with Rev. David Sorenson and Rev. Loren and Ruth Halvorson officiating. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery in Park Rapids with Long Prairie Rotarians as pallbearers.
She was born in Minneapolis November 29, 1941 to Stanley and Gladys (Hovander) Gustafson. She married Clayton Peterson at the Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd in Edina November 30, 1963. She grew up in St. Louis Park and graduated from St. Louis Park High School in 1959. She then attended Gustavus Adolphus College where she received her Bachelor of Science degree in Education in 1963 and taught for a year before she and Clayton moved to Liberia, West Africa. After returning to the United States, they lived in St. Anthony, MN. for three years before moving to Omaha, Neb. She attended the University of Minnesota Education Association, ARC Retreat Center in Stanchfield, and The Refuge in Cambridge. Nancy helped in starting the Faith Community in Cambridge and was a former member of the Cambridge City Council.
She was preceded in death by her father, Stanley Gustafson.
She is survived by her husband, Clayton of Long Prairie; mother, Gladys Gustafson of St. Louis Park; children, Karna (Paul) Gifford of Granger, IN. (near South Bend); Amy (Chad) Pavlis of Columbia Heights and Joel Peterson of Cambridge; brother, Peter (Suzie) Gustafson of Apple Valley; and grandchildren, Melissa, Jeffrey and Thomas Gifford of Granger, IN and Jared Pavlis of Columbia Heights.
Memorials to The Refuge in Cambridge or ARC Retreat Center in Stanchfield are preferred.
Brian Laudert
Brian Jacob Laudert, 47, of Braham, died peacefully at his home January 26, 2001 surrounded by his family and friends and following a courageous battle with cancer.
A memorial service was held Jan. 31 from First Lutheran Church in Rush City with Rev. Laurie O’Shea officiating. Honorary pallbearers were Mike Pasko, Jim Simon, Dennis Siltman, Mike Coffin, Mike Gust and Greg Paulson.
He was born in Minneapolis December 13, 1953 and in 1967 moved to Rush City where he developed his love of the outdoors. He enlisted in the Marines in 1972 and was honorably discharged in 1976. The remainder of his years were spent living in the Rush City/Braham area. Brian worked in various professions until he found his true vocation as an animal control officer and trapper. Until the very end of his life, Brian continued to entertain those around him with his sharp wit and excellent sense of humor. He will be greatly missed. A special thanks to all who helped care for him while he was in hospice.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Earl and Muriel Laudert.
He is survived by his former wife, Mary and their daughters, Aimee (Joel) Nelson; Laurie (Mark) Hilgers; and Brianne (Dustin) Laudert; former wife, Kitty and stepchildren, Tausha and Jason; brothers, Mike (Laurel) Laudert; and Mark Laudert; sisters, Roberta (Wayne) Vernon; Kim Laudert; Michele (Jim) Schramm; and grandchildren, Samantha, Joshua, Jordan, Dariane, Hailee, Bryce, Jenna and Gabryell.
Arrangements were by Rock Mankie Burial and Cremation Services of Braham.
Frank Liukonen
Frank Levi Liukonen, 92, of White Bear Lake, formerly of Cambridge, died at St. John’s Hospital January 26, 2001.
Services were held Jan. 30 from Maple Ridge Evangelical Free Church with Rev. George Wold officiating. Music was provided by Dorothy Gerdin and Jerry Lindahl. Burial was in the church cemetery with his grandchildren and nephews as pallbearers.
He was born in Ishpeming, Mich. October 14, 1908 the fifth of seven children of Frans Oskar and Emma Liukonen who were originally from Huittinen, Finland. As a young man, he moved to Duluth and married Alice Swanson May 12, 1934. Shortly after they were married they moved to Maple Ridge where they were dairy farmers. In 1968 they sold the farm and moved to Cambridge where they lived until January 2000 when they moved to White Bear Lake.
He was preceded in death by his sisters, Leah, Linda, and Laina and by his brothers, Lauri, Lucas and Ludwig.
He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Alice; son, David (Pauline) of St. Paul and their children Scott (Sue) of Maplewood and their children, Shawn and Matthew; Dan (Janis) of Burnsville and their daughter, Heidi’ daughter, LoAnn (Lance) Peterson of Glencoe, IL and their children, Anja and Kari; son. Larry (Jeanette) of Burleson, TX and their son, Noah; Britta of Waco, Minnesota to Erick and Helen (Lundeen) Olson. He grew up in Springvale and attended country school Dist. 44. His father died when Franklyn was four-years-old and after completing grade school, Franklyn and his brother Gottfred, farmed the home farm. On October 31, 1943 he married Alice Findell at Dalbo Baptist Church and the couple remained on the farm for about three years before moving to Minneapolis. Franklyn worked as a bricklayer and stone mason for Lebeaux, Jesco, for his brother, and had his own commercial remodeling business before retiring in 1988. He and Alice continued to live in Minneapolis until 1992 when they moved back to the farm. He enjoyed restoring old cars and John Deere tractors, hunting, fishing, gardening and traveling. He traveled to every state with the exception of Alaska and Hawaii. He was a member of Bricklayers No. 2 Union.
He was preceded in death by his parents and by his brother, Gottfred.
He is survived by his wife, Alice; sons, Larry of Bloomington; Ron of Richfield and Roger (Maggie) of Minneapolis; grandson, Tim Olson of Aberdeen, S.D. and by his sister, Ann Line of Minneapolis.
Arrangements were with Carlson-Labatte Funeral Home in Cambridge.
Evelyn Quam
Evelyn May Quam, 86, of Dayton, MN. died February 4, 2001 at Presbyterian Homes of Roseville.
Services were held Feb. 7 from Strike Funeral Home-Isanti Chapel with Pastor Jerry Holt officiating. Soloist was Lynette Hubin with Mary Kay O’Neill as organist. Burial was in Strike Cemetery in Bradford Township with David Anderson, Steven Barthdidel, Rick Coons, Dale Dietrich, Ed Quam and Tim Starks as pallbearers.
She was born in Minneapolis July 22, 1914 to Herbert and Edith Lysne. She was raised in Minneapolis and graduated from North High School. On January 27, 1938 she married Wilbert Quam in Northfield and they lived in Maple Grove for 30 years. Following her husband’s death in 1987, she moved to Dayton. Evelyn was a member of Northbrook Seventh Day Adventist Church in Robbinsdale. She enjoyed her flowers, walking and working crossword puzzles.
In addition to her husband, Wilbert, she was preceded in death by her daughter, Janet Heroff and by two sisters and one brother.
She is survived by her sons, Darwin, Dale and Brian, all of Dayton; brother Warren (Rita) Lysne of Colorado; three grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
