Marion Yerigan
Marion Lucille Yerigan, 75, of Cambridge, died September 29, 2001.
Services were held at Carlson-Labatte Oct. 2 with Rev. Jonathan Larson officiating. Mary Falk, accompanied by Mary Kay O’Neill, sang “Heaven is My Home” and “The Old Rugged Cross.” Pallbearers were Harold, Paul, Wayne, Jim, Greg, Mike, and David Yerigan. Interment was in the Cambridge Union Cemetery.
Marion was born February 6, 1926, to Forrest and Laverne Thunstrom in the farm home where she was raised and later raised her family and spent her life. She married Henry (Bud) Yerigan in August 1942 and to this union four sons were born: Harold, Wayne, Paul, and Jim. Marion enjoyed fishing and camping, the cabin, quilting and latchhook rugs, cooking and gardening, and most of all, her family. Her family and grandchildren were the joy of her life.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, sister, Marjorie, brothers, Warren and Robert, and daughter-in-law, Sierra.
She is survived by sons, Harold (Sandy); Wayne (Sandra); Paul and Jim (Vicki); grandchildren, Tammie, Kelly, Greg, Holly, Mike, Lisa, Lynn, and David. There are many more family and friends, and her special cat, Tuffy.
Arrangements were with Carlson-Labatte Funeral Home in Cambridge.
Evelyn Ficken
Evelyn J. Ficken, 89, of Isanti, died at Cambridge Medical Center September 24, 2001.
Memorial services were held Sept. 28 from Strike Funeral Home-Isanti Chapel with Rev. Paul Reynolds officiating.
She was born in Marshall, MN. April 6, 1912 and was raised at Marshall where she lived for several years. It was there she married Raymond Charbonneau. They were married for 20 years and raised five children. Ev later married Glenn Ficken and lived in California; daughters, Bernice (Robert) Case of Isanti; Betty Schenk of Shoreview; and Yvonne (Herman) Plaeth of California; 19 grandchildren; 38 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.
Betty Steinhaus
Betty L. Steinhaus, 81, of Tucson, Minnesota and California; daughter, Sue (Paul) Anderson in Minnesota; grandchildren, Luke, Nathan, Rita, Michelle, Tami, Scott and John.
Bertha Stevens
Bertha Hocking Stevens, 93, of Cambridge, formerly of Hibbing, died October 7, 2001, at Cambridge Health Care Center.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 13 at Cambridge Lutheran Church with Rev. Erling Tungseth officiating. Honorary pallbearers will be Pete Segar, Lori Segar Mans, Rich Segar, Blake Norman, Christian Norman, and Max Segar. Interment will be in Maple Hill Cemetery in Hibbing.
She was born January 11, 1908 in Mountain Iron, MN to James and Martha (Murrish) Hocking. She graduated from Hibbing High School in 1926 and went on to the Duluth State Teachers School, graduating from there in 1928. Bertha went on to teach at Marble and Mountain Iron schools. On July 29, 1939 she married Grenfall Stevens at First Presbyterian Church in Hibbing. The couple lived in Hibbing where they raised two daughters, Gayle and Marcy. Bertha later taught at Hibbing and would retire as a reading consultant for Hibbing Public Schools in 1973. After retirement the couple continued to live in Hibbing until November 1996 when they moved to Millridge Commons in Cambridge. Grenfall passed away December 1997. More recently, Bertha lived at Cambridge Health Care Center. She was an active member of the Presbyterian Church in Hibbing. She enjoyed Bible study and directed the junior choirs for many years. She was also active in the Eastern Star and served as Worthy Matron, and in the Wisconsin. They later returned to Iowa and several locations in Maine.

Leslie Schwarten
Leslie W. Schwarten, 92, long-time resident of the Braham-Cambridge area, died October 12, 2001. He had been living in the Grandview Christian Home. Les owned and operated the Schwarten Walgreen Agency Drug in Braham for 39 years, and was a prominent community leader.
A memorial service will be held at noon, Saturday, Oct. 20, from the Carlson-Labatte Funeral Home in Cambridge with Rev. Erling Tungseth and Rev. Byron Schmid officiating. Organist will be Mary Kay O’Neill. Interment will take place at a later date at St. John’s Lutheran Cemetery on East Rush Lake.
Les was born in Osceola, WI on May 15, 1909 to J.F. (Fritz) and Matilda Johnson Schwarten. After two years in Seattle, WA, his parents settled in Braham where his father and an uncle operated the general store. Les graduated from Braham High School in 1925 and from the University of Minnesota Pharmacists Association.
He married Muriel Hamilton June 29, 1935. They raised three children: James, an orthopedic surgeon in Billings, MT; Lesley, a former elementary teacher, living in Blaine, Mn; and Steve, a Cambridge dentist. Les helped establish the first movie theater (Park Theater) in Braham in 1937. As secretary-treasurer of a newly-organized non-profit hospital board of directors, he helped arrange for the purchase and reopening of the Braham Community Hospital in 1946 and its expansion 10 years later. In 1970 the hospital board developed the medical center building to attract medical and dental staff to Braham. That center now operates as a satellite of the Cambridge Medical Center.
In 1968 Les was instrumental in helping gain approval for construction of the federally-subsidized and financed Braham Heights duplexes on the southwest side of Braham. In the 1960s, he also was on the board of directors of the Braham Development Corporation that obtained a bowling alley and a locker plant. The community project that was most meaningful to Les Schwarten was the formation of the Five County Mental Health Center in 1964 and its location in Braham. He was a guiding force behind establishment of the agency that continues to provide services for mental health, mental retardation and chemical dependency to residents of Chisago, Isanti, Kanabec, Mille Lacs and Pine counties.
After retiring in 1974, Les continued to assist as pharmacist in the Braham-Cambridge area until he and Muriel moved to the Tampa, FL area in 1977. During the summers they returned to their cabin on Rush Lake. Les and Muriel moved back to Cambridge in 1996 to be closer to their family.
Family has always been Les’ greatest joy. He was immensely proud of his children and their accomplishments. He especially looked forward to the summer cabin with children and grandchildren. He and Muriel celebrated their 63rd wedding anniversary in 1998. Les was an avid sports participant, enjoying golfing, fishing and hunting. He was a long-time member of Braham Lutheran Church. Since returning from West Virginia. He was baptized at the age of 18, while stationed with the Air Force in Ohio and Georgia Sullivan of White Plain, Maryland; daughters, Linda Logan of Elk River, Phyllis Baker of Seward, Alaska, Patty (Joris) Schleicher of Cambridge, MN; sons, Tim (Annette) Akers of Cambridge, MN, Robert (Terri) Akers of Cambridge, MN; son-in-law, Tom Johnson of Cambridge, MN; grandchildren, Heather (Shawn) Williams, Cindy Johnson (Mike Szafranski, fiance), Jennifer Schleicher, Joel Schleicher (Joni Fields, fiance), Jesse Baker, Britni Akers, Brandon Akers, Michael Akers, and Tommy Akers.
Arrangements were with Carlson-Labatte Funeral Home in Cambridge.
Betty Jean Carlson
Betty Jean (Maki) Carlson, 64, died after a courageous battle with cancer, October 14, 2001, at her home in rural Stacy, and surrounded by her family.
Funeral services are scheduled at 2 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 18, at Strike Funeral Home-Isanti Chapel, with Rev. Clell Bone officiating. Visitation will be Wednesday from 4-8 p.m. The musician will be Karen Mills, and Gary McPherson will do the eulogy. Pallbearers are Jim, Randy, Robert and Ron Carlson, Dave Grabenbauer, Eric Larson, Duane Nerlien, and Don Whitehead. Burial will be in the Isanti Union Cemetery.
She was born November 7, 1936 at Moose Lake to Wilho and Ailie Maki. She grew up in the Medicine Lake area and attended Wayzata High School. On February 16, 1957, she married James T. Carlson at the Basilica of St. Mary in Minneapolis. They made their home in North Minneapolis until 1971 when they moved to Isanti County where she has since made her home. Betty especially enjoyed all of the family activities. She also enjoyed traveling, reading, crocheting, playing bingo, and the casino trips.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her sister, Loraine; daughter, Lori Ann; granddaughter, Emilia Lori Ann.
She is survived by her husband, James of Stacy; children, Deb Chapman of East Bethel, Diana (Dave) Grabenbauer of Palmer Lake, CO, Jim (Beth) Carlson of Zimmerman, Jodi (Don) Whitehead of Glendale, AZ, Robert (Dana) Carlson of Princeton, Denise (Eric) Larson of Isanti, Janice Carlson of Minneapolis, Randy Carlson of East Bethel, Ronald (Melissa) Carlson of Harris; by sisters, Carol (Gary) McPherson of Maple Plain and Judy (Tom) Johnson of Maple Plain; and 19 grandchildren.
