Orville Peter Reanfred Larsen was born March 13, 1904 in Union Countil rural South Dakota to Robert and Mary (Petersen) Larsen. Orville attended Brule Grade School, he grew to manhood and became actively farming with his father and later on his own. Orville was united in marriage on April 10, 1929 to Gladys E. Hansen at the Danish Lutheran parsonage in Beresford, South Dakota. They made their home on a farm in rural South Dakota near Alsen, until the fall of 1939. It was then that they moved to the Maple Ridge community west of Stanchfield. It was here that they lived for the rest of his life until February 1996. Orville was a successful farmer and polled Hereford breeder. He raised and bred polled Hereford cattle for 71 years. It was in 1919 when Orville accompanied his father to a cattle sale and convinced him to buy four of the hornless beef animals for him. The 15-year-old boy developed a fascination for polled Herefords that remained strong until his retirement from the cattle business in 1990. He soon paid off his father and began building a herd of his own. During the Depression years when the Dakotas were ravaged by drought and plagues of grasshoppers and hail, Orville sought out the green pastures of Isanti County’s Maple Ridge Township. He came with a truckload of Herefords in 1939 and stayed. All of his cattle were raised strictly for breeding stock. To promote the sale of his cattle he took part in shows and sales throughout Wyoming and North Dakota State Fair. Ribbons and trophies earned by his cattle, when laid out, would cover an entire dining room table. It was a sad day when he was forced to disburse his cattle business for one “last” time. His comment was that “it’s hard to let go.” Orville was a very intelligent man and had good business sense. He served on several committees and church council at his churches; was a member of the Isanti County Fair Board and was an active leader and promoter of the Isanti County 4-H Program. He was also a salesman for the DeKalb Seed Company and an active and original member of the East Central Hereford Association. He enjoyed pitching horseshoe, at which he earned several trophies. Other activities were checkers and playing Rook with his family and friends. He was an active member of the Salem Lutheran Church of Dalbo and at present a member of the Braham Lutheran Church. His greatest joy was his wife, Gladys, and his two daughters, Birdice and Roberta. He encouraged both daughters in their school work and music achievements. For the past four years, Orville has been a resident of the Grandview Christian Home in Cambridge.
