Father Felix Kuras 1912 - 1999, Father Felix Kuras, retired priest of the Diocese of Duluth, died April 30, 1999. He was born on April 12, 1912 in Duluth. He was ordained a priest on May 26, 1938, in the former Sacred Heart Cathedral. He served parishes in Eveleth, Floodwood, Warba, Walker, Hackensack and Cloquet. He was pastor of St. Mary Star of the Sea Parish in Duluth from 1967 to 1977, when he retired for health reasons. He also served as a chaplain in the U.S. Army from 1944 to 1946. He is survived by two sisters, Teresa Sromek of Gilmlan, Wis. and Frances Nehl of Cromwell. Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on Tuesday at 11 a.m. at St. Mary Star of the Sea Church in Duluth. A wake service was held at St. Mary Star of the Sea Church on Monday at 7 pm. Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery.

Alice Sundberg McCuskey, 92, died Jan. 7, 1999, in Viewcrest Health Center. She was born in Cambridge. She was a member and officer of the former Holyoke Presbyterian Church. She was also a member of the Golden West Enders and West End Senior Center of Duluth. Alice was deeply loved and will be greatly missed by all. She was preceded in death by her husband, Louise, in 1971; her sons Wayne, Lauren and Gerald, in 1950, 1958 and 1997, respectively; her sisters, Lillian and Frances and her brother, Wallace. She is survived by a sister, Evelyn (Dan) Gaffke of Superior, Wis.; five grandsons, Michael (Sheri) of Duluth, Patrick (Sandy) McCuskey of Pequoson, Va., James (Robin) McCuskey of Lakewood, Calif., David (Beth) McCuskey of Duluth and Jay (Laurie) McCuskey of San Pedro, Calif., and 11 great-grandchildren. She will be laid to rest on Friday with a 2 p.m. graveside service in Holyoke Cemetery. Arrangements by Fred Olson Mortuary.

Monte Gale Rilea 1956 - 1999, 42, Esko, died Friday, April 30, 1999, in his home. He was born on Sept. 11, 1956, in Cloquet to Delwin and Elaine (Larson) Rilea. He was raised in the Carlton and Barnum area. He graduated from high school in 1975. He was an Army veteran. He was been employed with Pinkerton Security and Diamond Tool in Duluth, as a painter and sandblaster with Abhe Svoboda and for the last 14 years, had been employed with Diamond Brands in Cloquet, most recently as a shift supervisor. He was a member of the Minnesota Deer Hunters Association. He was a sports enthusiast and enjoyed fishing, hunting, golfing and making people laugh. He is survived by three children, Chris of Duluth, Amanda of Minneapolis and Roxanne of Hermantown; his parents, Delwin and Elaine Rilea of Esko; a sister, Dawn (Ralph) Reynolds of Carlton; four brothers, Chuck (Rochelle) and Glenn, both of Carlton, Gene of Esko and Todd (Kimberly) of Mahtowa and many, many friends. Visitation was held on Monday from 6-8 p.m. in Northland Funeral Home in Cloquet where visitation continued on Tuesday from 10 a.m. until the 11 a.m. funeral service. Patricia “Pat” Ruth Langenbrunner 1926 - 1999, 72, Cloquet, died Friday, April 30, 1999, in St. Luke’s Hospital, Duluth. She was born on Aug. 22, 1926 in Cloquet to Bernard and Ruth (Guilda) Sundeen, Sr. She was a 1944 graduate of Cloquet High School. She married Donald C. Langenbrunner on June 9, 1945 in Cloquet. She worked as a lab assistant at the Cloquet Community Memorial Hospital from 1968 until her retirement in 1982. She was a member of New Life Community Church of Carlton and a former member of the Ski Fleas Snowmobile Club. She was deeply loved and will be greatly missed. She was preceded in death by her father and a sister, Candace Sundeen. She is survived by her husband of 53 years, Donald of Cloquet; her son, Mike; special friend, Susan Lund of Cloquet; two daughters, Donna (Jon) Fuller of Cloquet and Cynthia (Thomas) Porta of Cambridge; her mother, Ruth Douglas of Plattsburgh, N.Y.; two brothers, Bernard Sundeen, Jr. of Cloquet and Thomas Sundeen of Barnum; a sister, Donna Toye of Plattsburgh, N.Y.; 13 grandchildren, Mark and Miles Langenbrunner, Milissa Soukkala, Jon Fuller Jr., Rachel, Michael, Anna, Philip, Mary, Esther, Sara, Lily and Marsha Porta; and three great-grandchildren, Jaycee and Jarod Soukkala and Makala Langenbrunner. The family received friends on Tuesday from 2 p.m. until the 3 p.m. funeral service in New Life Community Church in Carlton. Rev. Eldon Galyen will officiated. Gene William Zoch 1944 - 1999, 55, Brookston, died Sunday, May 2, 1999, in his home. He was born on March 5, 1944, in Ashland, Wis., to Ferdinand Zoch and Dorothy Johnson. He grew up in Namakagon, Wis., and graduated from Cable High School. He spent most of his life in Minnesota. He is survived by his cousins, Florence Campbell of Park Falls, Wis., and Raymond Nettleton of Superior, Wis.; and his aunts, Mable (Warner) Faris of Chicago and Alice Zuroski of Butternut, Wis. David D. Wills 1944 - 1999, 54, Brookston, formerly Cloquet, died Monday at St. Mary’s Medical Center in Duluth. David was born on June 26, 1944, in Cloquet to William H. and Rose L. (Bolduc) Wills. He was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his brother, Vern (Trudy) Wills of St. Louis, Mo.; his nieces, Theresa Wills and Tami Wills-Dyck, both of St. Louis, Mo., and a great-nephew, Brendan Dyck of St. Louis, Mo. Visitation will be held today, Saturday, one hour prior to the 9:30 a.m. funeral service in Wefelmeyer Funeral Home in Cloquet. The Rev. Ramon Olson will officiate. Emma Karjala 1906 - 199, 92, Wells, died Wednesday, May 5, 1999, at Naeve Parkview Home in Wells. She was born on Sept. 18, 1906, in Thomson to Charles and Emma (Majala) Kesty. She married William Karjala on Sept. 13, 1923. She lived in Esko for 48 years, moving to Wells in 1970. She was a homemaker and seamstress. She was a member of the Wells United Methodist Church, the VFW Auxiliary, a life member of the American Legion Post 262 Auxiliary in Cloquet and the WWII Barracks and Women’s Relief Corps. She was unit president six times and president of the District Eight American Legion Auxiliary. She was a Gold Star Mother. She attended the National Legion Auxiliary Conventions in Miami and Hawaii. She was preceded in death by her husband; one son, Harvey in WWII; two sisters and one brother. She is survived by one daughter, Ruth Lamphier of Wells; five grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; one sister, Esther Gault of Superior, Wis.; and numerous nieces and nephews. Visitation will be held today, Saturday, one hour prior to the memorial service at 1:30 p.m. at United Methodist Church in Wells. Pastor Kenneth A. Haack will officiate. Bernice Tostrup, 75, Maplewood, formerly of Smithville, died Sunday, May 2, 1999, at Maplewood Care Center. She was born in Duluth and grew up in the Fond du Lac community. She was a 1941 graduate of Denfeld High School and was involved with the class reunion committee. She retired from the Duluth Public Schools where she was a teacher’s aide. She was a member of the Lutheran Church of Christ the King and Redeemer Lutheran Church in Duluth where she was active in various guilds, and circles and taught confirmation class. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph in 1993 and one brother, Earl Harms. She is survived by one daughter, Bonnie (Dale) Ninmann of White Bear Lake; two sons, Thomas (Cheryl) of Green Bay, Wis., and Roger of Portland, Ore.; one sister, Agnes (Alven) Wedlund of Proctor; eight grandchildren, Julie, Jason, Jeremy, Chris, Stacy, Alison, Zachary and Jon and a sister-in-law, Marjorie Harms of Esko. Visitation was held on Tuesday from 5-8 p.m. at Bell Brothers Chapel and continued on Wednesday from 12:30 p.m. until the 1:30 p.m. service at Lutheran Church of Christ the King. Burial will be in Fort Snelling National Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to the Alzheimers Association or the Lutheran Church of Christ the King. Sister Rose Ann Valley, 87, St. Scholastica Monastery, died Thursday, April 29, 1999, at the monastery. She was born in Gentilly to Albert Valley and Asma Marie (Vaudrin) Valley where she attended elementary school through grade five. She completed grade school and high school at Villa Sancta Scholastica, Duluth. Later, she took college courses at the College of St. Scholastica and the former Duluth Normal School. In 1967, after completing evening classes at Duluth Central High School, she received her certification as an executive housekeeper. During her long, active career, she served in various ministries. Her first assignment was to St. Gertrude’s School, Washington, D.C., where she helped supervise the students and did housework. As a teacher, she served at Cathedral, St. James, St. Clement’s, St. Peter’s and St. Margaret Mary’s, all in Duluth. She also taught at Holy Name School in Wayzata, Our Lady of the Sacred Heart in Cloquet, Our Lady of Victory in Minneapolis and St. Leo’s in Hibbing. She performed general household duties at the music conservatory operated by the Benedictines, at the former McCabe Guest Home, St. Scholastica Monastery and the former St. James Children’s Home, all in Duluth. She cared for the elderly at St. Mary’s Convent, at the former St. Ann’s Home and at the present St. Ann’s Residence in Duluth. She spent 10 years at St. Mary’s Medical Center as executive housekeeper. In 1987, she returned to the monastery as assistant to the Director of Temporalities. Failing health made it necessary for her to retire in 1989. She had been a member of the 75th Chapter of the National Executive Housekeepers Association, Head of the Lakes Chapter, which she served as treasurer and board member. She was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers and six sisters. She is survived by the sisters of St. Scholastica Monastery; one brother, Albert of Bella Vista, Ark.; three sisters, Jean (Gordon) Ellinger of Crookston, Lucille (Sheldon) Ahles of Fargo, N.D. and Martha (Felix) Baier of Greenfield, Wis.; and many nieces and nephews. A wake service was held on Sunday at 4 p.m. at Our Lady Queen of Peace Chapel, St. Scholastica Monastery, with visitation following until 5:30 p.m. The Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at 4:30 p.m. on Monday in Our Lady Queen of Peace Chapel. Burial will be in Gethsemane Cemetery. Memorials may be made to St. Scholastica Monastery. Arrangements by Bell Brothers Funeral Home, Jarvi-Dowd Chapel, Duluth.

Carl William Kytola, Sr. 1908 - 1999, 91, of Prairie Lake, died Friday, May 7, 1999, in Community Memorial Nursing Home. He was born on Jan. 10, 1908, in Eagle Lake Township. He enjoyed the outdoors. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Sylvia; son, Carl, Jr. (Kay) of Wright; daughters, Carla (Pete) VanDeNest of Floodwood and Carlyn Anderson of Cloquet; brothers, Edward (Helen) and Allan, both of Oregon; sisters, Lillian Furstnow of Floodwood, Sylvia Brennan of Tacoma, Wash., Helmi Neshiem of Minneapolis and Ruth Holmes of Floodwood; eight grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. Emma C. Davis 1908 - 1999, 90, of Carlton, formerly of Cromwell, died Saturday, May 8, 1999, in the Carlton Nursing Home. She was born on Sept. 30, 1908, in Salem, Wis., to Nelson and Aartje (Meyer) Larson. She married Howard Davis on June 29, 1930, in Cromwell. She was a member of the Cromwell United Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Howard, in 1949; two sons, Willard and Delmar; her grandson, Paul; two brothers and two sisters. She is survived by her sons and daughters, Stanley (Judy) of Cromwell, Estella Gustafson of Rochester, Dean of Salem, Ore., Judy (David) Smith of Portland, Ore., and Lucille (Walter) Jonland of Denver, Colo.; a sister, Marian Peterson of Minneapolis; 23 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. Robert W. Hansen, Sr. 1929 - 1999, 60, of Hermantown, died Wednesday, May 5, 1999, at the Franciscan Health Center. He was born on Nov. 27, 1929, in Duluth and attended Denfeld High School. He had worked for the DTA, Northland Equipment and United Truck Body before founding Hansens Petroleum Service from which he retired in 1986. He was a member of Lakehead Harvest Reunion and the Loon Lake Harvest in Palo. Ralph Edward Nikko 1942 - 1999, 56, of Cromwell, died Saturday, May 8, 1999, in Lakeshore Lutheran Nursing Home in Duluth. He was born on July 25, 1942, in Thomson Township to Thomas and Sylvia (Kokko) Nikko. He was raised in the Cromwell area and attended Cromwell Schools. Ralph was the owner of G&N Construction Company. He was a very dedicated father of four and a hardworking family man. He was preceded in by his parents; a son, Paul Richard Nikko in 1973; two brothers, Walter in 1992, and Donald in 1933; and three sisters, Doris and Darlene, both in 1940 and Marie in 1932. He is survived by his four children, Sherrie (Tony) Swanson of New Richmond, Wis., Chet Nikko of Cromwell, Shannon Nikko and her fiance, Bruce Soukkala, of Cloquet and Anna Torres of Cloquet; two grandchildren, Ayla Marie and Ronald Ralph Thomas Swanson; four sisters, Delores Cahoon of Duluth, Evelyn Marsyla of Kettle River, Pearl Walters of Clarksville, Tenn., and Marjorie (Archie) Marsyla of Minneapolis; four brothers, Rudolph (Karen) Nikko of Proctor, Ronald Nikko of Cromwell, Kenneth Nikko of Wright and Gordon (Renetta) Nikko of Moline, Ill. Duane Franklin Reynolds 1960 - 1999, 39, of Duluth, died Tuesday, May 11, 1999, in his home. He was born on Jan. 22, 1960, in Cloquet to Frederick and Julia (LaDuke) Reynolds. He spent most of his life in Cloquet and moved to Duluth in 1995. He was a member of the Fond du Lac Band of the Lake Superior Chippewa. He was preceded in death by his father, Frederick and one sister, Rosemary Reynolds. He is survived by sons, Duane Morris of Bemidji and Duane Sam of Cloquet; daughters, Kristin “Krissy” Sam, Autumn Martineau, Tayshe Martineau and Katrina Martineau, all of Cloquet; his mother, Julia Reynolds of Cloquet; brothers, Frederick, Jr. of Cloquet and Dennis (Na) of Minneapolis; sisters, Fredericka DeCoteau of Siren, Wis., and Debbie (James) Mallery of Cloquet. Lyle D. Ankrum 1946 - 1999, 52, of Wrenshall, died Monday, May 10, 1999, at St. Luke’s Hospital in Duluth. He was born on Aug. 6, 1946, in Tracy to LeRoy and Leona (Huibregtse) Ankrum. He moved to the Wrenshall area in 1956 and graduated from Wrenshall High School in 1965. He entered the United States Army and was a Vietnam Veteran. He married Jane Davis on April 26, 1969, in Las Vegas, Nev., and they returned to Wrenshall in 1987 where he was a self-employed drywall taper. He was a member of the Carl Anderson American Legion Post 262 in Cloquet. He enjoyed working in the yard, garden and ‘pittering’ in the garage. He was preceded in death by his father. He is survived by his wife, Jane; his children, Elizabeth (Wayne) Joselyn of Proctor and James (Catherine) Ankrum of Eagan; his mother, Leona Ankrum of Cloquet; grandchildren, Randy and Jessica Joselyn; five brothers, Howard (Jarri) of Tower, Al (Claire) of Portland, Ore., Harold (Cheryl) of Wrenshall, Clyde (Carol) of Wrenshall and Ted (Becky) of Andover; two sisters, Linda Ankrum of Duluth and Kathy (Tom) Wolf of Eveleth; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Visitation was held from 5-8 p.m. on Wednesday at Nelson Funeral Care where funeral services continued at 10 a.m. on Thursday with Rev. Mike Keller officiating. Pallbearers were Howard, Al, Harold, Clyde, Ted and Craig Ankrum. Interment services followed at Silverbrook Cemetery in Wrenshall. Elvina Marie Edin 1910 - 1999, 89, of Carlton, died Sunday, May 23, 1999, in her home. She was born on March 1, 1910, in Thief River Falls to Nels and Anna (Erickson) Amren. She attended school in Thief River Falls. She married George Edin in October of 1932. She worked as a clerk in a coop store until 1939, then, owned and operated the Blue Room until 1950. She later served as the head cook at Churchill Elementary School until her retirement. During this time, she catered weddings on the side. Elvina was a member of Zion Lutheran Church where she also served as a Sunday School teacher for 20 years. She was preceded in death by her husband, George, in 1991. She is survived by her son, Ronald (Bonnie) Edin of Cloquet; daughter, Nancy (Victor) Jensen of White Bear Lake; grandchild, Pam (Paul) DeRoy of River Falls, Wis.; nephews, David Edin of Inver Grove Heights and Darren Jensen of Germany, also Laurie (Dimitri) Langston-Wiebe of Linwood, Wash. and Lisa (Jim) Weber of Lino Lakes; great-grandchildren, Connor, and Danielle DeRoy of River Falls and Madellyn Weber of Lino Lakes. Hilma S. Hjulberg (Stonelake) 1909 - 1999, Passed away on May 11, 1999. She was born in Cromwell in 1909. She lived in Cromwell, Minneapolis, Wyoming and Forest Lake. She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Ida Stonelake; her husband, Bill; her son, Milton; her daughter, Marcella; her sisters, Pearl, Minnie, Lila, Vivian and Lillian; her brothers, Fred, Onnie and Sulo; one grandson, Richard Ives; and one daughter-in-law, Barb Ives. She is survived by her brother, Larry of Cokato; sons, Marvin, Melvin and Michael; grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Sybil Viola Wicklund 1917 - 1999, 81, of Carlton, formerly of Holyoke, died Friday, May 21, 1999, at the Carlton Nursing Home. She was born on July 12, 1917, in Nevada, Iowa, to Hiriam and Minnie (Scott) Scott. Sybil married Vernie Wicklund on Sept. 26, 1936, in Carlton. She worked as a welder in the Globe Shipyards in Superior, Wis., during WWII. She loved her cats and spending time gardening. She was a loving, and caring mother, and grandmother and will be sadly missed by her family. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Vernie; two grandchildren, Kenneth Kingsely, III and Barbara Black; her brother, Leonard; and two sisters, Minnie and Sarah. She is survived by her daughters and son, Elaine (Robert) Black of Wrenshall, June (Kenneth) Kingsely of Cromwell, Janie (Jerry) Kruger of Wrenshall and Gary Wicklund of Holyoke; a brother, Joseph (Alice) Scott of Fairmont; her sisters, Violet (Gilbert) Granzow of Minneapolis and Lulumae Small of Carlton; eight grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. Steven Rodney Green 1961 - 1999, 37, of Esko, died suddenly Friday, May 21, 1999. He was born on Aug. 25, 1961, in Duluth to Rodney and Jeanette (Hammitt) Green. He went to high school in Hopkins and Cloquet. He joined the Marines in 1979 and was stationed on Paris Island, S.C. until he was discharged in 1982. After leaving the Marines, he worked as a chef at numerous restaurants in Minneapolis, such as Winfield Potters, Pronto’s, Coco Lezzone and Sherman’s Bakery. He later worked for various abatement companies in Minnesota, Iowa and Nevada. He most recently worked at Chemstar in Carlton. He loved the outdoors, and was a hunter, fisherman and avid motorcyclist. He rebuilt his Harley Davidson motorcycle and loved riding it everywhere. He had a talent for working with glass, he created many beautiful and intricate pieces of glass art. He was an excellent chef, and enjoyed cooking for his friends and family whenever he had the opportunity. He is survived by his father, Rodney of Esko; his mother, Jeanette Green of Minneapolis; sister, Valerie Green of St. Paul; grandmother, Hilma Hammitt of Wrenshall; his special friend, Stacy Ross of Superior, Wis.; and many aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. The family received friends from 10 a.m. until the 11 a.m. memorial service on Tuesday in Northland Funeral Home, Cloquet. Arrangements by Northland Funeral Home, Cloquet.

Frances Carol Needham, Cloquet, died Friday, May 21, 1999, at her home in Cloquet after a courageous battle with cancer. She was preceded in death by her parents, Frank and Eva (Cronkite) Synkiew; a brother, Robert Synkiew; a sister, Marian Hales and her husband, Thomas. She is survived by her son and daughters, Thomas (Carol) Needham, Tamara Needham and Terasa (James) Needham-Tjaden, all of Cloquet; four grandchildren; one great-grandson; a sister, Bunny Barnes; and her nieces and nephews. Visitation was held on Monday one hour prior to the 2 p.m. memorial service in Queen of Peace Catholic Church in Cloquet. The Rev. Kenton Sailstad officiated. A private interment was held in Sunrise Cemetery Mausoleum in Duluth. Arrangements by Wefelmeyer Funeral Home, Cloquet.

James E. Gallagher, 62, of Phoenix, Ariz., died May 20, 1999. He was born and raised in Cloquet. He was a steeple jack painter. He is survived by his mother, Cyrilla Gallagher; his wife, Susan; daughters, Molly Campbell, Krissy Fischer and Katy Chong; son, Danny Gallagher; brother, John Gallagher and six grandchildren. Visitation was held from 4-7 p.m. on Sunday at Tempe Mortuary, Tempe Rosary. Mass of Christian Burial was held at 10 a.m. on Monday at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church, Tempe, Ariz. Charlene L. Lundberg 1949 - 1999, 50, of Cloquet, died Thursday, May 20, 1999, in St. Luke’s Hospital, Duluth. She was born on March 28, 1949, in Duluth to Orville and Janet (Rogers) Schlafer. She married Paul Lundberg in 1968 and lived for many years in Silverbay, later moving to Cloquet. She graduated from William Kelly High School. She also graduated from the Academy of Hair Design and worked as a beautician for several years. She was well known for her talented painting and craft work. She was a loving daughter, wife, mother and grandmother. She was preceded in death by her father, Orville Schlafer. She is survived by her husband, Paul, of 30 years; her mother, Janet; sons, Shane and Scott (Brenda); sisters, Sandy (Mark) and Wendy (Craig); a brother, Larry (Linda); grandchildren, Karli and Tyler of Minneapolis, and Quinton, Tristan and Austin of Scanlon. Visitation was held on Saturday one hour prior to the 2 p.m. service at Salem Lutheran Church in Mahtowa. Rev. Paul Tainter officiated. Organist was Kathy Resberg. Soloist was Rev. Paul Tainter. Pallbearers were Carl Lundberg, Steve Lundberg, Brett Lundberg, Larry Schlafer, Mark Buckley and Graig Guzzo. Burial will be in Sandy Lake Cemetery. Arrangements by Barr Brothers Funeral Home, Cloquet.
