Ruth Mathilda Ammesmaki 1926 - 1999, 72, of Duluth, died Tuesday, May 25, 1999, in Park Point Manor. She was born on Aug. 16, 1926, in Cloquet to Charles and Sophie (Whitebird) Diver. She attended the White Earth Mission School in Odanah, Wis. She also attended Cloquet schools and graduated from St. Benedict’s Mission in White Earth. She was also a member of the Fond du Lac Band of Minnesota Chippewa tribe. She married Gerald Ammesmaki on July 2, 1977. She was a homemaker. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Judith (Munnell) Macias; her brothers, George Diver, Antoine Diver and John Diver; and her sisters, Josette Diver, Gertrude Diver Besto, Ethel Murray Diver and Eunice Cobenais. She is survived by her husband, Gerald of Duluth; her brothers, Fabian Diver, Charles Diver and Donald Diver of Cleveland, Ohio; her sister, Gloria Bimberg of Menahga; her daughters, Roberta (Munnell) Johnson of Detroit Lakes, Kathleen (Munnell) Headbird of Cass Lake, Sandra Beauregard of Superior, Wis., Carol Jean (Beauregard) DeVerney of Duluth, Patty Jo and Kathy Beauregard, Donna Jean (Munnell) Baasola, Dorothy Baasola, Mary Ellen (Baasola) Garafola of Duluth, Debbie (Baasola) Meger of Fond Du Lac and Patty Jo (Baasola) Judnick of Virginia; and her sons, Michael Dennis Beauregard-Munnell of Fond du Lac, John Emile Baasola, Robert Anderson of Minneapolis and Joe Munnell of White Earth. Visitation was held on Friday from 4-7 p.m. with a prayer service at 7 p.m. at Barr Brothers Funeral Home in Cloquet. The funeral mass will be held at the Holy Catholic Church in Cloquet today, Saturday at 11 a.m. Father Eugene Lyttle will officiate. Burial will be at Old Holy Family Catholic Cemetery in Cloquet. Paul Frank Town 1925 - 1999, 73, of Lakeland, Fla., formerly of Duluth and Cloquet, died April 28, 1999, peacefully at home. He was born on Sept. 25, 1925, in Park Rapids to Frank and Marion Knobloch Town. After graduating with honors from high school, he joined the U.S. Navy, serving in the Pacific Theater until 1945. He graduated from UMD magna cum laude and received his master’s degree from UWS. After a career in management with the Ralston-Purina Company, he returned to Duluth, teaching physics, astronomy and higher math at Denfeld High School. He moved to Florida in 1980, concluding his teaching career in 1992 at Santa Fe High School in Lakeland, Fla. He was active in the lay ministry of the Episcopal Church, most recently in Lakeland, Fla., and as a member of St. Paul’s in Virginia. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Phyllis; a brother, Edward (Sharon) of Sacramento, Calif.; sons, Paul (Merrilee) of Coon Rapids and Michael (Roni) of Duluth; daughters, Jacquelyn (Clifton) Middleton of Miami, Fla., Patricia (Rob) Thompson of Grand Forks, N.D., and Kathleen (Randy) Thompson of Woodbury; grandchildren, Kalie Irizarry, Faith Dawson and Rachel Middleton, Grant McMaster, Autumn, Ben, Emily and Michael Town, Evan and Adam Town, Chelsea and Connor Thompson and great-grandson, Andrew Irizarry. Memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on June 12 at Trinity Episcopal Church in Hermantown. Interment will be in Greenwood Cemetery in Park Rapids.

Frank J. Fink 1927 - 1999, 72, of Cloquet, died Saturday, May 22, 1999, at St. Mary’s Medical Center. He was born on March 9, 1927, in Amherst, S.D., to Martin and Josephine (Wegleitner) Fink. He married Irene (Marek) Plinski on July 13, 1959, in St. Casimir’s Catholic Church in Cloquet. He served in the United States Army in Germany following WWII. He worked for Diamond Brands for a short time prior to going to work at Potlatch, where he worked for over 30 years. He was a member of Queen of Peace Catholic Church and the Carl Anderson American Legion Post 262 in Cloquet. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Irene, on April 19, 1998, and a sister, Marion. He is survived by his son and daughter, John (Jeanne) Plinski of Minneapolis and Sharon (Gil) Bascom of Duluth; grandchildren, Michael, Michelle, Frank, Deborah, Corey, Lori, Lisa, Loni, Jim, Bob and Terrie; great grandchildren, Westley, Tiana, Austin and Adam; two sisters, Helen Sessler of Cloquet and Evelyn “Babe” (Bernard) Regeth of Riverfalls, Wis.; and several nieces and nephews. Visitation was held from 6-8 p.m. on Monday in Wefelmeyer Funeral Home in Cloquet. Parish prayer was at 7 p.m. Visitation continued on Tuesday at Queen of Peace Catholic Church one hour prior to the 11 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial. The Rev. Kenton Sailstad officiated. Regina Roemhildt was the soloist. Mary Watson was the organist. Pallbearers were Mike Dyar, Tom Cook, Corey Bascom, Mike Pooler and Kent Teslow. Linnie H. Radtke, 86, formerly of Wright, passed away May 25, 1999. She was preceded in death by her husband, Merton; son, Jackson and daughter, Mary Frances. She is survived by children, Charlotte Jo Ann (Rudy) Nessman, Pauline (Clyde) Ammala and Sandra Sandwick; 10 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; and other relatives and friends. Visitation was held from 5:30-8:30 p.m. on Friday at Miller Funeral Home in Fridley and will continue one-half hour prior to the funeral service at 11 a.m. today, Saturday, at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Wright. Arthur Harold Card 1917 - 1999, 81, of Cloquet, passed away on Tuesday at the Cloquet Hospital. He was born on Oct. 26, 1917, to Sherman and Eva (Cronkite) Card in Warren. He attended school in Cloquet. He served in the Army and was a cement mason in the Cloquet area until he retired. He was a member of the Veteran’s of Foreign Wars. He was preceded in death by his parents; and two sisters, Lois Jackson and Frances Needham. He is survived by three daughters, JoAnn (David) Rouleau of Cloquet, Carolyn (Marvin) Lamppa of Babbitt and Patricia Putnam of Cloquet; two sons, Bruce (Susan) Card of Nebraska and Brian Card of Tennessee; 11 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; one sister, Bernice Barnes of Cloquet; two brothers, Leroy Card of Washington and Ray Card of Brookston and a special friend, Mabel Cherrier. Visitation was held one hour prior to the memorial service at 2 p.m. on Friday at the Northland Funeral Home in Cloquet. Interment will be in Maple Grove Cemetery. Barbara Mary Wheale 1932 - 1999, 66, of Cloquet, died Wednesday, May 26, 1999, in The Cloquet Community Memorial Hospital. She was born on Sept. 22, 1932, in Duluth to John R. and Marie (Chamberlain) Strongitharm. She graduated from Proctor High School and married William Wheale on May 29, 1954. She was a Cloquet resident since 1954. She was a member of Queen of Peace Catholic Parish and the Legion of Mary. She was preceded in death by her parents; and brothers, David Strongitharm and John R. Strongitharm, Jr. She is survived by her husband, William “Bill;” five sons, Dave (Lydia) of Cloquet, Patrick (Roxane) of Carlton, Greg (Paula) of Duluth, Mark (Mary) of Cloquet and Michael of Cloquet; two brothers, Dennis (Beverly) Strongitharm of Duluth and Michael (Mary) Strongitharm of Proctor; four grandchildren, Kristofer, Jason, Matthew and April Wheale; and several nieces and nephews. Rachel Marion Trettel 1918 - 1999, 81, formerly of Cloquet, died Tuesday, May 25, 1999, at the Franciscan Skemp Healthcare Center in LaCrosse, Wis. She was born in Cloquet on Jan. 7, 1918, to Nels and Gunda (Hoffstad) Rimstad. She married Herman Trettel. Rachel had worked at Diamond International in Cloquet for over 20 years and was a longtime member of Queen of Peace Catholic Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Herman, in 1988; a sister, Shirley Schillinger and a brother, Nemmen Rimstad. She is survived by a daughter, Marlene (Robert) Salls of LaCrosse; a son, Terrance Trettel of Brainerd; three grandchildren, Troy (Heidi) Trettel, John (Kim) Trettel and Kelly Rae Welton; two great-grandchildren, Kyle and Celia; and many nieces and nephews. Lillian Gertrude Anderson Ryter, 88, of Duluth, died Friday, May 21, 1999, at St. Luke’s Hospital in Duluth. She was a lifelong resident of Duluth and graduated from Denfeld High School. She was a member of Lakeside Presbyterian Church and retired from an administrative position with St. Louis County where she worked for many years. She was preceded in death by her parents, Ivar, and Nannie Anderson and her husband, Clifford. She is survived by one sister, Gladys Belanger of Duluth; one brother-in-law, Judge Edmund Belanger of Duluth; one nephew, Brian (Dian) Belanger of Rockville, Md.; one great-nephew, Marcel Belanger of Gaithersburg, Md.; one great-niece, Lia Belanger Book of Elizabethtown, Pa.; and two cousins, Jean Pelofske of Cloquet and Carol Dunphy of Port Angeles, Wash. Russell E. Mittlestadt 1938 - 1999, 60, of Superior, Wis., died Tuesday, May 25, 1999, in St. Mary’s Medical Center in Duluth. He was born on June 1, 1938, in Knapp, Wis. and was a longtime Superior, Wis., resident. He was a member of the Guide Dog Foundation for the Blind and was employed as a custodian at the Royalton Manor for many years before his retirement in 1989. He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Olive Mittlestadt. He is survived by one sister, Ethel E. Cich of Superior, Wis.; two brothers, Robert E. Mittlestadt of Cloquet and Wilfred C. Mittlestadt of Dyersburg, Tenn.; and several nieces and nephews. Visitation was held on Friday one hour prior to the funeral service at 1 p.m. at Lenroot-Maetzold Funeral Home with the Rev. H. Charles Thomas Anderson 1934 - 1999, 65, of Cloquet, passed away Wednesday, May 26, 1999, in Cloquet Community Memorial Hospital. He was born on April 29, 1934, in Barnum to Charles and Rosalie (Wojciehowski) Anderson. He married Beverly A. Saaristo on July 7, 1956, in St. Mary’s Star of the Sea Catholic Church in Duluth. He later became a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Cloquet. He retired from the Potlatch Corporation in Cloquet after 34 years. He was preceded in death by his father in August of 1975 and his mother in July of 1978. He is survived by his wife, Beverly; his sons, Michael (Donna) Anderson, and Monte Anderson, all of Cloquet, Charles (Julie Gilchrist) Anderson of Duluth and Martin (Cindy) Anderson of Holdingford; two daughters, Debra Anderson of Royalton and Donna (Stuart Swanson) Koivisto of Carlton; brothers, William (Lynnette) Anderson of Hibbing and Richard (Gail) Anderson of Cloquet; sisters, Mary (Arne) Jarve of Cloquet and Clara (Gene) Skelton of Orr; grandchildren, Denise, Tammie, Donna Mae, Kristie, Kimberly, Anthony, Mathew and Sara; mother-in-law, Edna Perkola; and several nieces and nephews. Eino “Ted” Niemi 1926 - 1999, 72, of Cloquet, died Wednesday, May 26, 1999, in St. Luke’s Hospice following a month-long illness. He was born on Oct. 4, 1926, in East Lake to Oscar and Senia (Finnily) Niemi. He was an Army veteran serving during the Korean Conflict. He moved to Cloquet in 1956 where he married Harriette Comeau on Aug. 1, 1959. He worked in the woodyard at Potlatch for 33 years, retiring in 1989. He was a member of the Cloquet Presbyterian Church, the Potlatch Quarter Century Club, the Carlton VFW and Local Union 97 where he served as steward. He enjoyed fishing, dear hunting, bowling, pitching horseshoes, and visiting with his family, friends and neighbors. He was preceded in death by his brothers, Jack, and Ernest and a sister-in-law, Tyyne. He is survived by his wife of 39 years, Harriette; son, Steve (Liz) of Minneapolis; daughter, Sue (Ronnie Kubis) Niemi of Minneapolis; brothers, Edwin (Norman) of Cumming, Ga., Eugene (Helen) of Duluth and John (Deltah) of Barnum; sisters-in-law, Doreen (Jim) Roarty of Green Bay, Wis. and Laura Lee (Curt) Gullickson of Cloquet; two grandchildren, Taylor and Jake Theodore Niemi; many nieces, nephews and cousins. Sybil Viola Wicklund 1917 - 1999, 81, of Carlton, formerly of Holyoke, died Friday, May 21, 1999, at the Carlton Nursing Home. She was born on July 12, 1917, in Nevada, Iowa, to Hiriam and Minnie (Scott) Scott. Sybil married Vernie Wicklund on Sept. 26, 1936, in Carlton. She worked as a welder in the Globe Shipyards in Superior, Wis., during WWII. She loved her cats and spending time gardening. She was a loving, and caring mother, and grandmother and will be sadly missed by her family. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Vernie; two grandchildren, Kenneth Kingsely, III and Barbara Black; her brother, Leonard; and two sisters, Minnie and Sarah. She is survived by her daughters and son, Elaine (Robert) Black of Wrenshall, June (Kenneth) Kingsely of Cromwell, Janie (Jerry) Kruger of Wrenshall and Gary Wicklund of Holyoke; a brother, Joseph (Alice) Scott of Fairmont; her sisters, Violet (Gilbert) Granzow of Minneapolis and Lulumae Small of Carlton; eight grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. Merlyn Olive Habhegger Severeid 1896 - 1999, 102, died May 27, 1999, at the Mercy Health Care Center in Moose lake. She was born on Sept. 27, 1896, in Wrenshall to Louis and Ella (Coryell) Habhegger. She attended school in Wrenshall and was a member of the First Presbyterian Church. On April 12, 1930, she married Silas Severeid. She was a homemaker, and a mother who enjoyed reading, crocheting and flower gardening. She was preceded in death by her husband; an infant daughter; her parents; brothers, Fred Habhegger and Charles Habhegger; sister Ella Miller and a son-in-law, Richard Tschida. She is survived by one daughter, Shirley Tschida of Moose Lake; four grandchildren, Jerry (Renee) Tschida, Jeanne (Darwin) Hammitt, Jane (Ron Moen) Klejeski and Robert (Connie) Tschida; eight great-grandchildren, Kristie (Matt) Laveau, Aaron Tschida, Joshua Hammitt, Jacob Hammitt, Adam (Julie Rae) Klejeski, Julie Klejeski, Troy Olson, Abigail Tschida; one great-great-grandchild, Kyle Leveau and several nieces. Josephine Mary Suhonen 1907 - 1999, 92, of Wright, died Thursday, May 27, 1999, in Villa Vista Nursing Home in Cromwell. She was born on March 1, 1907, in Chicago to Bolslaw and Josephine (Lapinski) Cebulski. While living in Chicago, she worked as a Red Cross nurse, for a doctor and owned a restaurant. She came to the Wright area in 1949 and married Arvid Suhonen on June 29, 1957. After her marriage, she farmed with her husband and worked as a volunteer nurses’ aid at the Moose Lake Hospital. She loved music, adored children, and enjoyed visiting with her family, friends and neighbors. She will be sadly missed. She was preceded in death by four sisters, Fran, Betty, Nora and Bobbie; and two brothers, Paul and Edward. She is survived by her husband, Arvid of Wright; a sister, Helen Johnson of California; and numerous nieces and nephews. Visitation was held on Tuesday from 12 Noon until the 1 p.m. funeral service in Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Wright. Interment will be in Lakeside Cemetery in Wright. Evelyn Marjorie Swenson 1941 - 1999, 81, of Mahtowa, died Thursday, May 27, 1999, in the Carlton Nursing Home. She was born on July 17, 1917, in Scanlon. On Oct. 25, 1941, she married Charles A. Swenson in Barnum. She was a homemaker and a dairy farmer with her husband in the Mahtowa area. She was a member of Salem Lutheran Church in Mahtowa and helped organize the Young at Hearts. She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles; parents, Charles and Ella (Olson) Peterson and one sister, Elenor Peterson. She is survived by two sons, James A. of Mahtowa and C. Philip of Lincoln, Neb.; brother, Jim (Carol) Peterson of Carlton; nieces, Susan (Steve) Webb and Gail Peterson; nephew, Craig (Yvonne) Peterson; great nephews, Matt and Kellen; great niece, Sherry; and other relatives and friends. Visitation was held from 6-8 p.m. on Monday in Northland Funeral Home in Mahtowa and continued from 10 a.m. until the 11 a.m. service on Tuesday in Salem Lutheran Church in Mahtowa. Vali Rae Anderson 1953 - 1999, 45, of Pitt Street, went to be with her Lord on Thursday, May 27, 1999, while in St. Luke’s Hospital in Duluth. She was born on May 28, 1953, to Grant and Sherri (Taylor) Martin in Newport Beach, Calif. She graduated from high school in San Jose, Calif., and later from the Golden West College in Huntington Beach where she received her degree in cosmetology. She married Patrick John Anderson on Aug. 20, 1982. They moved to Duluth in 1988 and lived there since. She was a beautician for Cost Cutters for the past 10 years and was currently working at the Holiday Mall shop. She was a member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church and the State Board of Cosmetology. She loved gardening, watching old movies and especially being with her children. She was fun loving, caring and very helpful to everyone. She was a loving wife and mother who will be sadly missed. She was preceded in death by her mother and a sister, Gabrielle Carpenter. She is survived by her husband, Patrick John; her children, Cody Marshal, Cheyenne Marie, Shane Patrick, all at home, and Jason Patrick of Duluth; her father, Grant Martin; sister, Chandra (Edward) Curtis Brookings, Ore.; aunt, Jeanne Turnel of Mercer Island, Wash.; uncle and aunt, William and June Schweer of Leeds, Utah; grandparents, Carl and Olivia Gustofson of Duluth; many nieces and nephews; and her family and friends at Cost Cutters. Helen Stromsness Melzark 1920 - 1999, 79, of Tempe Ariz., formerly of Moose Lake, died Wednesday May, 26, 1999, at the Mayo Clinic Hospital in Phoenix, Ariz. She was born on March 11, 1920, in Cloquet to Carl and Sophie (Kleimola) Stromsness. She grew up in Cloquet where she attended school and later graduated. On May 6, 1941, she married Lewis R. Melzark in Moose Lake. They lived in Moose Lake and later in Kettle River where they farmed. She worked at the Moose Lake State Hospital. She, and Lewis also owned and operated Lew’s Dine and Dance in Kettle River for 21 years. In 1977, they moved back to Moose Lake. She wintered the past 10 years in Arizona and in 1997, moved to Tempe, Ariz., to reside year round. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lewis, in 1988. She is survived by three daughters, Janet Reitan of Antioch, Calif., Marion (Jim) Morbeto of Concord, Calif., and Dorothy (David) Bruneau of Cloquet; a son, Philip (Renae) Melzark of Allenton, Wis.; two brothers, Arne (Alice) Stromsness of Cloquet and John (Virene) Stromsness of Minnetonka; eight grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. Mass of Christian Burial was held on Monday at 10 a.m. in Holy Angels Catholic Church in Moose Lake. Father Michael Hayes was the celebrant. Reggie Garvey and Joanne Unzen provided music. Casket bearers were Robert Ness, Carmen Milczark, Darryle Reitan, Steve Stromsness, Jeffrey Morbeto, Ed Melzark, Dustin Melzark and Roger Mohelsky. Eugene Harold Ritchie 1922 - 1999, 77, of Sparks, Nev., formerly of Cloquet, died May 23, 1999, at his residence. He was born on March 7, 1922, in Brainerd to Edwin and Blanch (Terpanier) Ritchie and had lived in Sparks, Nev., for the past 10 years after living in Cloquet for a number of years working for Conwed, retiring in 1984. He was well known by a number of people in the Cloquet and Scanlon areas. He was also a retired watchman. He was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars, Fernley First Baptist Church. He was a WWII Army veteran, having served with Company C 182D Engineers C Battalion. He is survived by his wife, Gertrude of Sparks; stepdaughters, Janis Danielson of Sparks and Jean Brown of McGregor; stepson, Glen LeDoux of Houston; sister, Delores Wanous of Alaska; seven grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be at a later date. Cremation will be at Sierra Crematory under the direction of Walton’s Sparks Funeral Home. Roberta M. “Bobbie” Persgard 1926 - 1999, 72, of Duluth, died Monday, May 24, 1999, in her home. She was born on Oct. 20, 1926 in Duluth to Robert and Rachel (Burr) Moore. She was a Denfeld High School graduate. She was a lifelong cook for numerous area restaurants, most recently at Joyce Carlson’s Kitchen. She was the past president and founder of the “Billy D” Fan Club. She was a former member of the Grandma and Grandpas Group. She was an active member of the Tops Organization and a student of Claudia’s School of Dance. She also did volunteer day care for her grandson, Joe. She was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Shirley, and Joyce and her brother, Edward. She is survived by two daughters, Rhonda (Jeff) Swanson of Duluth and Laura (Al Terwey) Persgard of Esko; one son, Charles Persgard of Duluth and one grandson, Joseph Terwey. Hans Fredrick Carlson, 80, of Duluth, died Saturday, May 30, 1999, in his home. He was born in Duluth and was owner of Hans Carlson Upholstery. He was a member of Christ Lutheran Church, West Duluth Moose, VFW Post 137 and the American Legion Post 71. He was a medic in the Army during WWII and a volunteer driver. He also taught square dancing, and was a caller for more than 40 years and was a member of the Good Time Square Dancing Club. He was an avid golfer and bowler. He was preceded in death by one son, Mark, in 1961; his wife, Ione, in 1997; his parents, Hans and Emma; and sisters and brothers. He is survived by one daughter, Bonnie J. (Greg) Dhaemers of Superior, Wis.; two sons, Fredrick “Fritz” H. of Duluth and Bruce H. of Esko; seven grandchildren and one great-grandson. Visitation was held on Monday from 5-8 p.m. at Bell Brothers Chapel. Service was held on Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Christ Lutheran Church. Russell H. Cragin 1921 - 1999, =77, of Superior, Wis., died Monday, May 31, 1999, at Lakehaven Manor Nursing Home in Duluth. He was born on Sept. 11, 1921, in Montello, Wis. He was a Superior, Wis., resident for most of his life. He was a U.S. Army veteran, having served in Okinawa. He retired as a detective with the Douglas County Sheriff’s Department with over 24 years of service. He was a member of Holy Assumption Catholic Church and the Moose Lodge of West Duluth. He helped form the 4-H Club in Oliver, Wis. He was preceded in death by his parents, David and Amanda Cragin; two brothers, Kenneth and Bernard; a sister, Beatrice; grandchildren, Traci, and Greg Hansen and Bob Dalton and a son-in-law, Larry LaJoie. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Cecelia; 10 daughters, Jeanne (Lawrence) Atkinson of Superior, Wis., Sharyn (Albin) Hansen of Superior, Wis., Jacky (Clarence) Callen of Toivola, Pam (Daniel) Rude of Oliver, Wis., Vicki (Dennis) Merrill of Menasha, Wis., Betty (Kerry) Moceri of Rapid City, S.D., Linda LaJoie of Madison, Wis., Shelly (Gary) Erickson of Green Bay, Wis., Colleen (Gary) Carr of Oliver, Wis., and Jill Bachman of Superior, Wis.; three sons, Russell (Laura) Cragin of Menomonie, Michael (Renee) Cragin of Carlton and Patrick Cragin of Oliver, Wis.; 37 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. A memorial mass was held today, Saturday, at 10:30 a.m. at Holy Assumption Catholic Church with the Rev. Ron Olson as celebrant. Inurnment will be at Calvary Cemetery where military honors will be accorded by the Henry S. Blomberg VFW Post 847. Arrangements by Downs Funeral Home.

Tyne Wilhemena Plante 1907 - 1999, 92, of Cloquet, died Tuesday, June 1, 1999, at the Cloquet Nursing Home. She was born on May 16, 1907, in Finland to Gabriel and Maria (Koski) Salo. She moved with her family to the United States at the age of four. She married Emil Plante on June 9, 1928, in Cloquet. She previously worked for the Diamond Match Company in Cloquet. She was a member of the Queen of Peace Parish and the Lady Foresters. She enjoyed spending time with her children and grandchildren. She also enjoyed traveling and visiting relatives. And, with her husband, Emil, they were known as the “Hockey Grandparents.” She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Emil, in 1995; two children Evelyn and Howard; six brothers; three sisters; one grandson, Ryan; and two great-grandsons, Matthew and Colton. She is survived by her five children, Betty (Robert) Milberger of Cloquet, Kenneth (Sharon) Plante of Cloquet, Alfred (Mary) Plante of Colorado Springs, Colo., Mary Leone (Neil) McPhail of Cloquet and Bruce (Sandy) Plante of Hermantown; one sister, Pearl (Bill) Aronen of Virginia; three brothers, William Salo of Two Harbors, Arthur Salo of Duluth and Jack “Jacko” Salo of Marina, Calif.; 22 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. Visitation was held from 6-8 p.m. on Friday at Nelson Funeral Care with a rosary service at 7 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated today, Saturday, at 10:30 a.m. at Queen of Peace Catholic Church with Rev. Father Kenton Sailstad. Pallbearers were her grandsons, Mark Milberger, Scot Milberger, Bret Milberger, Todd Milberger, Jay Milberger, Michael Plante, Douglas Plante, Stuart Plante, Derek Plante, Jason McPhail, Philip Plante and Christopher Plante. Interment services followed at New Calvary Cemetery in Cloquet. Arrangements by Nelson Funeral Care, Cloquet.
