Rudolph “Rudy” J. Chernich 1916 - 1998, 82, Hoyt Lakes, died Friday, Dec. 11, 1998 at the Aurora Nursing Home. He was born on Jan. 31, 1916 in Duluth to Anton and Mary (Brula) Chernich. He moved to Cromwell in 1930. Rudy enlisted in the U.S. Naval Reserve in May of 1942 where he received training with the Amphibious Armed Forces in Scotland. He received the Bronze Star for the invasion of North Africa. He was honorably discharged from the Navy in 1945. Rudy was employed by Conwed in Cloquet and Erie Mining Company of Hoyt Lakes where he retired in 1978 after 21 years. He married Dorothy G. Balsness of Cromwell on Sept. 14, 1957. He was an avid amateur radio operator, a member of the VFW Post 8144 of Hoyt Lakes and the American Legion Post 241 of Aurora. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Pete Chernich. He is survived by his wife, Dorothy of Hoyt Lakes; daughters, Lori Chernich of Virginia and Becky Ojanen of Maplewood; granddaughters, Kelly and Sara Ojanen of Maplewood; and a brother, John (Bertha) Chernich and his family of Fountain Hills, Ariz. A memorial service was held at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Nelson Funeral Care Chapel, Cloquet, followed by full military honors presented by the Cloquet Honor Guard. There was refreshments with the family at Nelson Funeral Care prior to inurnment services at Forest Hill Cemetery, Cromwell. Arrangements by Nelson Funeral Care, Cloquet.

Dorothy I. Houwman 1917 - 1998, 81, Cloquet, died Friday, Dec. 11, 1998 in the Cloquet Community Hospital and Convalescent Nursing Care Section. Dorothy was born on Sept. 3, 1917 in Aitkin to Charles and Elizabeth Viebahn. She was raised in Aitkin and graduated from Aitkin High School in 1936. Dorothy married her husband of 57 years, Andrew, in 1941 in Aitkin. Dorothy was a homemaker and loving mother who enjoyed spending her years raising her family. She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, William, Edward, Frank and Fred; and sisters, Marjorie Viebahn and Elizabeth Boyer. She is survived by her husband; a daughter, Marlis (Harold) Sagvold of Vero Beach, Fla.; a brother, Hubert (Ria) Viebahn of Cloquet; grandsons, Eric and Andy Sagvold; two great-grandchildren, Jacob and Evan; and many nieces and nephews. Services were held at 2 p.m. Monday in Wefelmeyer Funeral Home, Cloquet, with Rev. Peter Franz officiating. Pallbearers were Gordon Nelson, Eric and Andy Sagvold, David Rian and Harold Sagvold. Glen A. Masterman 1955 - 1998, 43, Carlton, died Friday, Dec. 11, 1998 in Carlton. He was born on Aug. 12, 1955 in St. Paul to Marvin and Jean (Franz) Masterman. He graduated from North St. Paul High School in 1973 and moved to the Carlton area in the early 80s. He started working in auto body repair at the age of 14. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, golfing, snowmobiling, trap shooting. He was a member of the Third Base Bar golf team, pool team and bowling team. He worked for Don’s Auto Body, Duluth. He is survived by his mother, Jean (Dean) Arnt of Brook Park; his father, Marvin (Beverly) Masterman of Barnum; his daughter, Christina Masterman of Lanse, Mich.; his fiancee, Phyllis Rousseau of Carlton; his fiancee’s children, Chris (Heidi) Rousseau of Colorado Springs, Shelia (Bill) Kelley of Wrenshall, Jill Rousseau of Superior, Wis. and Jolene Rousseau of Carlton; three brothers, Gary (Jeanette) of Oakdale, Ron (Jean) of Barnum and Dave (Tracy) of Maplewood; one nephew, Bill Masterman; three nieces, Melissa, Sara and Laura Masterman; and many, many special relatives and friends. Visitation was held from 5-8 p.m. Tuesday at Nelson Funeral Care Chapel where funeral services continued at 10 a.m. today, Wednesday, with Rev. Michael Fossen officiating. Viola M. Ronkainen 1912 - 1998, 86, Moose Lake, died Thursday, Dec. 24, 1998 in Mercy Health Care Center, Moose Lake. She was born on Oct. 8, 1912 in Moose Lake to William and Olga (Jokimaki) Maki. Viola was a member of Holy Trinity Church, Kettle River and the Kettle River Senior Citizens. She was preceded in death by her husband, Edwin Ronkainen; and four brothers, Ed, Carl, Franklin and Lauri. She is survived by one brother, Raymond (Katharine) Maki of Esko; a nephew, Ronald (Elaine) Ronkainen of Salem, Ore.; and numerous other nieces and nephews. Visitation will be today, Wednesday, from 1 p.m. until the 2 p.m. funeral service in Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, Kettle River. Interment will be in Holy Trinity Lutheran Cemetery. Arvo Albert Ranta 1921 - 1998 Martha K. Ranta 1916 - 1998, Arvo Albert Ranta, 77 and Martha K. Ranta, 82, Cloquet, died Tuesday, Dec. 22, 1998 as a result of a fire that destroyed their home. Arvo was born on May 2, 1921 in Cloquet to John and Maria “Mary” (Johnson) Ranta. He was retired from the former Chun King factory in Duluth. Martha was born on March 25, 1916 in Duluth to William and Edith (Behining) Killoran. She worked in a nursing home for a number of years. Married later in life, both Arvo and Martha enjoyed gardening, and taking care of the birds and animals that visited their property. Arvo was preceded in death by his parents; and two brothers, Donald and John. He is survived by two sisters, Lila Angell and Gloria (Charles) Pfisthner, both of Cloquet; and several nieces and nephews. Martha was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Ralph; and two sisters, Stella and Cora. She is survived by a brother, Martin Killoran of Nopeming; a sister, Verna Killoran Lord of Duluth; and several nieces and nephews. A memorial service was held Monday at 11 a.m. in Northland Funeral Home, Cloquet. A luncheon and time of informal fellowship was held following the service at 12 Noon in Our Redeemer Lutheran Church Fellowship Hall. Arrangements by Northland Funeral Home, Cloquet.

Theresa “Tracie” Ann DeFoe, 38, Bock, formerly of Cloquet, died Monday, Dec. 21, 1998 in her home in Bock. She was born in the Cloquet area and attended school in Cloquet, Cromwell and Duluth. She was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church and the Lake Superior Band of Chippewa, Fond du Lac Reservation. During her life, she was a homemaker and kept busy raising her four children. She was preceded in death by her mother, Elizabeth “Betty Ella” Morrison and her father, Rupert “Sparky” DeFoe. She is survived by her sons, Brandon and Josh DeFoe of Duluth; daughters, Leda DeFoe of Cloquet and Anna DeFoe of Duluth; brothers, Bob (Cynthia) LaFave, Dean “Tom” DeFoe and Steve DeFoe, all of Duluth, Leroy (Michelle) DeFoe of Iverson, LaVerne DeFoe and Michael “Joe” (Lori) DeFoe, all of Cloquet; a sister, Margo (Dave) Casey of Danderville, Wis.; a special friend, Daryl “Ole” Olson of Duluth; a grandchild; and several nieces and nephews. Visitation was at 9 a.m. Saturday in Barr Brothers Funeral Home, Cloquet, until departing for Holy Family Catholic Church for the 11 a.m. Rite of Christian Burial. Father Eugene Lyttle officiated. William B. Anton 1921 - 1998, 77, Cloquet, died Wednesday, Dec. 23, 1998 in St. Mary’s Medical Center, Duluth. He was born on May 28, 1921 in Duluth to William and Bessie (Paulson) Anton. He worked for Conwed from 1942 until retiring in September, 1983, after 41 years of service. In between working for Conwed, William served in the United States Army during WWII. He reenlisted in 1948 where he served in Europe. William was a member of the Hebert-Kennedy VFW Post 3979, Cloquet and Moose Lake. He married Hildegard K. Jatkowski on Aug. 5, 1948. He is preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Hildegard on Oct. 8, 1983; two brothers, Arby and Elmo; and two sisters, Mayta and Loretta. He is survived by his son, Donald W. Anton of Port Orchard, Wash.; and two sisters, Wilma Roen of Floodwood and Stella (Randall) Jacoby of El Dorado, Kan. Visitation will be Monday from 10 a.m. until the 11 a.m. service in Barr Brothers Funeral Home, Cloquet. Pastor Phillip Swensson will officiate. Organist will be Mary Watson. Soloist will be Tim Hebert. Honorary pallbearers will be Wilmer Krohn, Gordy Caza and Ray Autio. Charles “Bud” Frank Heavirland 1939 - 1998, 59, Floodwood, passed away peacefully in his home on Thursday, Dec. 24, 1998. He was born on June 1, 1939 in Remer to Frank E. and Una I. (Young) Heavirland. He married Barbara J. Stepan on Jan. 19, 1959 in St. Paul. Bud was a truck driver and became part owner of P & H Trucking. In 1977, he became the owner of Bud’s Place and Chas. Young Trucking. Bud was an avid snowmobiler, and belonged to Savanna Drifters and Sno-Gophers. He loved hunting, fishing, going to auctions and collecting junk. He was preceded in death by his parents, Frank in 1988 and Una in 1987; two sisters, Judy Rosemore in 1993 and Shirley Thorton in 1990 and a brother, Russell Heavirland in 1998. He is survived by his wife of 39 years, Barb; sons, Chuck (Wendy) and Skeeter (Brenda), both of Floodwood; daughters, Sandy (Ron) Hammer of Hermantown and Kim (Todd) Hutchinson of Floodwood; 14 grandchildren, Jackie, Chase, Tonya, Taylor, Josh, Tasha, Blake, Rafe, Taya, Gannon, Jaala, Jasin, Jade and Trae; one brother, Terry Heavirland of International Falls; four sisters, Joy Carlson of Floodwood, Ruth (James) Stepan and Patty Opperud, both of Willow River and Darlene (Glenn) Fraundienst of Sandstone; sister-in-law, Gwen Heavirland of Grand Rapids; and two brothers-in-law, Jim Rosemore of Arizona and Charlie Thorton of North Carolina. Marvin “Mick” Walter Twaddle 1931 - 1998, 67, Scanlon, died Tuesday, Dec. 22, 1998 in Community Memorial Hospital, Cloquet. He was born on Aug. 6, 1931 in Duluth to Marvin and Marie (Johnson) Twaddle. He graduated from Cloquet High School in 1949. He worked in the shipping department at Potlatch from 1950 until retiring in 1993. While at Potlatch, he served on the Safety Committee. After his retirement he enjoyed painting houses. He married Lois Seline on Oct. 6, 1951. She died on May 22, 1995. He married Pauline Sheehan on Feb. 28, 1998. Mick was a member of Bethel Lutheran Church in Scanlon, the Potlatch Quarter Century Club, Cloquet VFW, Moose and Eagles. He was very active in AA. He also enjoyed playing cribbage and horseshoes, going to the cabin on Lake Vermilion and he was a car enthusiast. Mick also served in the National Guards. He is survived by his wife, Pauline; two sons, Steven (Sue) of Virginia and Bruce (Nan) of Excelsior; two daughters, Gail (Bill) Elstad of Cloquet and Linda (Dick) Peterson of Superior, Wis.; stepchildren, Randy Sheehan, Dale Sheehan and Scott Sheehan, all of Cloquet, Jeff Sheehan of Cambridge and Cheryl (Dwight) Engler of Harris; one sister, Donna (Leslie) Johnson of Cloquet; 10 grandchildren; 13 step grandchildren and one step great-granddaughter. Visitation was from 10 a.m. until the 11 a.m. service Saturday in Bethel Lutheran Church, Scanlon. Pastor Dennis Morreim officiated. Music was provided by Jeanette Ferguson and Missy Parker. Harold Clifford Kjoberg 1917 - 1998, 81, died Sunday, Dec. 27, 1998 in the Cloquet Community Memorial Hospital. He was born on May 23, 1917 in Poupore to Louise and Nils Kjoberg. He went into the Army in January of 1942 and was discharged in July of 1945. While in the Army he wore five individual bronze stars on his European and Asiatic Theater Ribbons. On his Asiatic Theater Ribbon he proudly wore the Bronze Star for the China Campaign. On Sept. 25, 1945, Harold married the love of his life, Mildred Olson of Brookston. He worked at the Wood Conversion Company prior to going into the military and retired as a crane operator in 1977. He and his wife also owned two laundromats, one in Floodwood and one in Cloquet. Harold was an avid outdoorsman. He enjoyed hunting and fishing. He spent many deer seasons at the ‘shack’ with some of his closest friends. He also enjoyed traveling, taking many trips and tours to Europe, Australia and Korea. The motor home was his second home, spending many months going south to warmer weather and vacationing. He was preceded in death by his parents, Nils and Louise Kjoberg; two brothers, Melvin and Clayton and one sister, Helen Bengtson. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Mildred of Cloquet; two sisters, Ruth Anderson of Duluth and Dorothy Palm of Cloquet; one brother, Tom Kjoberg of South Bend, Wash.; several nieces and nephews and many special friends. Visitation was held Wednesday one hour prior to the 1 p.m. service in Zion Lutheran Church, Cloquet. Pastor Cheri Danielson and Pastor Burnell Baldwin officiated. Organist was Gordon Nelson. Soloist was Curt Gullickson. Pallbearers were Richard Holmes, Roger Holmes, Dan Becker, Brian Welman, Richard Olson and Leo Enlund. Burial will be in the spring. Charlotte M. Olson 1925 - 1998, 73, Cloquet, died Sunday, Dec. 27, 1998 at St. Luke’s Hospital, Duluth. She was born on March 3, 1925 in Cloquet to the late John and Carrie (Sell) Morken. She graduated from Cloquet High School in 1943. She worked at Puumala Clinic for many years, retiring in 1996. She was a member of St. Andrews Episcopal Church, Sons of Norway Heimsyn Lodge 15, Moose Lodge 1274, Eagles Club and the VFW 3979 Auxiliary. She was preceded in death by her husband, Donald; a son, Bradley; her parents; and brothers, Howard and John. She is survived by her daughter, Shelly Olson of Duluth; grandson, Shawn Olson; granddaughter, Shannon (Joe) Tellinghuisen; great-grandchildren, Austen Olson and Haley Jo Tellinghuisen, all of Cloquet and a sister-in-law, Hilja Morken of Cloquet. Sigrid Theodora Frohrip 1903 - 1998, 95, Moose Lake, died Wednesday, Dec. 30, 1998 in Mercy Health Care Center, Moose Lake. She was born on Nov. 24, 1903 in Cloquet to Olaf and Maria (Johnson) Hultberg. Sigrid lived in the Moose Lake area. On Sept. 12, 1925, Sigrid married Roy R. Frohrip in Barnum. They lived in St. Paul and White Bear Lake until 1945 when they returned to Moose Lake. Sigrid was a homemaker through the years. She was a member of Hope Lutheran Church, Moose Lake and its Ladies Aid. Sigrid was also involved in the Carlton County Homemakers and the American Legion Auxiliary. She was preceded in death by her husband, Roy in 1967; a daughter, Mavis Striegl; eight siblings and her parents. She is survived by a son, Curtis O. (Natalie) Frohrip of Moose Lake; a daughter, Jeanne (Donald) Ketchum of Carlton; a sister-in-law, Doris Hultberg of Moose Lake; a son-in-law, Robert Striegl of Edina; 11 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. Visitation was from 7-9 p.m. on Friday in Hamlin-Hansen-Kosloski Funeral Home, Moose Lake and continued from 12 Noon until the 1 p.m. service on Saturday in Hope Lutheran Church, Moose Lake. Rev. Owen Christianson and Rev. Laura Thelander officiated. Lee Mogen was the organist. Joel Soukkala was the soloist, accompanied by Sandy Wallin on the piano. Curtis Dean Wendorff 1961 - 1998, 37, Hector, passed away on Friday, Dec. 25, 1998 at the Renville County Hospital in Olivia. He was born on April 12, 1961 in Olivia to Gerald Lee and Barbra (Woltjer) Wendorff. He attended Brownton High School. He enjoyed camping with friends and relatives. He was an avid fisherman and deer hunter. He also enjoyed shooting darts in several leagues, bowling and playing softball. He was preceded in death by his grandfather, Elmer Wendorff; grandmother, Helen Schueltz; great-grandfather, Edward Wendorff; great-grandmother, Erna Wendorff; and great-grandparents, Otto and Hertha Millbrett. Raymond L. Wirtz 1917 - 1998, 81, Esko, died Thursday, Dec. 31, 1998 at Knapp Memorial Hospital Weslaco, Texas. He was born on Sept. 6, 1917 in Callaway to the late Otto and Anne (O’Conner) Wirtz. He owned and operated Wirtz 66 Service Station in Esko for many years, retiring in 1980. Since 1985, he and his wife, Ruth, would spend their winters in Donna, Texas. He was a member of Queen of Peace Catholic Church, Cloquet and of the Esko Volunteer Fire Department. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Joseph and Vincent and one grandson, Kristofer. He is survived by his wife, Ruth; six children, Thomas (Martha) Reller, William (Karla) Wirtz, Calvin (Mary) Wirtz, all of Esko, Daniel (Claudia) Wirtz of Circle Pines, Cathleen (Terry) Anderson of Fergus Falls and JoAnn (Jay) Gamache of Cloquet; 14 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and two sisters-in-law, Marvel Wirtz of Hopkins and Delores Wirtz of Spokane, Wash. Jim Blacketter, Jr. 1936 - 1999, 62, Sawyer, died Tuesday, Jan. 5, 1999 at his residence. He was born on March 17, 1936 in Sawyer to the late Jim Sr. and Lillian (Pequette) Blacketter. He was a night watchman for the Sawyer Community Center and a member of the Fond du Lac Band of Lake Superior Chippewa. He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Clarence, Roger and Charles and one sister, Joyce. He is survived by his wife, Mary Ann; five sons, David Boyd of McGregor, Jim Blacketter, Kris Blacketter and Matthew Blacketter, all of Sawyer and Brad (Melanie Rabideaux) Blacketter of Cloquet; three daughters, Melinda Blacketter, Shirley Blacketter and Cindy Blacketter, all of Sawyer; two brothers, Daryold and Bruce (Mary Ann), both of Sawyer; two sisters, Sylvia Smith and Alvina Tiessen, both of Sawyer; eight grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. Martha Juntunen Boutang 1921 - 1999, 77, Carlton, passed away peacefully in her sleep in the Carlton Nursing Home on Jan. 7, 1999. She was born on Nov. 18, 1921 in Thomson Township to Hjalmer and Hilma (Pietari) Juntunen. She was a member of the Apostolic Lutheran Church, Esko. Martha’s life was her husband, her children, her family, her friends, poetry and her home. She is survived by her husband, Howard; daughters, Pat (Sam) Mattson, Linda (Dan) Haus, Lisbeth Boutang; son, Irv Boutang; her grandchildren, Les Mattson, Amy (Kurt) Kolodge, Matthew and Nena Haus; great-grandson, Joshua Joseph; brothers, Roy (Audrey) Juntunen, Earl Juntunen, Chum (Donna) Juntunen, Joe (Ruth) Juntunen, Denny (Marianne) Juntunen; sisters, Lorna Johnston, Elsa (Melvin) Carlson, Bette (Jack) Bergstedt and Kay (Marlen) Perttula; many nieces and nephews and friends. Sydney “Bud” H. Carlson 1924 - 1999, 74, Cloquet, passed away on Saturday, Jan. 9, 1999 in St. Mary’s Hospital, Duluth. He was born on Feb. 21, 1924 in Cloquet to Henning and Edith (Peterson) Carlson. He graduated from Cloquet High School. Sydney was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, Cloquet. He served in the United States Army during WWII from 1943-1945. He owned and operated the Driftwood Motel in Cloquet. He retired from Potlatch in 1979, after 36 years of service. He was a member of the Quarter Century Club, the American Legion Post 201 of Mora, Hebert-Kennedy VFW Post 3979 of Cloquet, the Eagles of Cloquet and the Moose Lodge of Yuma, Ariz. He was preceded in death by his wife, Marion, on Jan. 6, 1997. He is survived by his sons, Ron (Karen) Carlson of Mora, Gary (Anne) Carlson of Hilo, Hawaii and Chris (Sherri) Carlson of Duluth; a daughter, Sheryle (Duane) Haarsager of Cloquet; brothers, Harry Carlson and Donald (Joan) Carlson, both of Cloquet; sisters, Maxine Armstrong of Cloquet and Beatrice (Marvin) Nelson of Lindstrom; 12 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and many nieces and nephews. Full military rites accorded by the combined Honor Guard of Hebert-Kennedy VFW Post 3979 and the Carl Anderson American Legion Post 262, both of Cloquet. Betty Mae Anderson 1937 - 1999, 61, Wrenshall, died Monday, Jan. 11, 1999 in St. Mary’s Hospital, Duluth. She was born on Oct. 20, 1937 in Cloquet to John and Emma McKechnie. Betty was a 1955 graduate of Carlton High School. Following high school she worked at the Wood Conversion from 1955-1958. She married Roger W. Anderson in 1958. Betty and Roger co-owned the Iverson Inn from 1981-1992. Betty was a very spirited person. She enjoyed participating in bowling leagues, playing pool, and playing cards with family and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents and her sister, Lois Gulbranson. She is survived by her husband; two daughters, Jackie (Roger) Gilberg of Chicago and Robin Anderson of Superior, Wis.; a son, Glenn (Laurie) Anderson of Wrenshall; her grandchildren, Josh and Ryan Gilberg of Chicago, Jacob, Danielle and Samantha Anderson of Wrenshall. Visitation was held on Thursday from 12 Noon until the 2 p.m. service in Barr Brothers Funeral Home. Pastor Randy Tedford officiated. Music was by Mr. Tom Cawcutt. Robert S. Nolte 1918 - 1998, 80, Mahtowa, died Thursday, Dec. 24, 1998 in Donna, Texas, where he had spent his winters for the past several years. He was born on March 19, 1918 to Harry B. and Mildred B. Genrich Nolte in Algona, Iowa. He was a Duluth and Mahtowa resident for over 50 years. Bob had been employed as a salesman for Becks Furniture of Duluth for many years until his retirement. He was a U.S. Army veteran of WWII, having served in the South Pacific. He was a member of Mahtowa Covenant Church and attended People Covenant Church of San Juan. Bob was also a member of the Donna Veterans of Foreign Wars Post and a former member of Duprey Alexander V.F.W. Post of Duluth. He was a member and enjoyed camping with the Good Sam Camping Club and a member of the Park Lake Association. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth on March 25, 1994; a son, Thomas; a brother, Fernley and his parents. He is survived by his daughter, Nancy Cudahy of Richmond, Texas; stepson, Ted Saari of Brooklyn Park; stepdaughter, Darlene (Al) Picconatto of Minot, N.D.; grandchildren, Robert (Mary Cathryn Ricker) Cudahy of St. Cloud and Mary (William) Liming of Alpharetta, Ga.; great-grandson, Kieran Michael Liming; 10 step-grandchildren; four step-great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Kathryn (Chester) Wedin and brother-in-law, Kenneth (Aileen) Bergquist, both of Duluth. Roy Anderson 1923 - 1999, 75, Fergus Falls, died Friday, Jan. 15, 1999 at his home. He was born on Oct. 2, 1923 in Duluth to Edward and Mary (Dalseg) Anderson. He grew up in Carlton where he graduated from high school. On June 19, 1943, he was married to Evelyn Anderson and they resided in Cloquet while he attended the University of Minnesota-Duluth. He trained in the area of social work, he worked for the Carlton County Welfare Department before relocating in 1950 to Fergus Falls where he helped set up one of the first rural community mental health centers in Minnesota. In the years to follow he was instrumental in expanding and securing funding for the construction of the Lakeland Mental Health Center where he was employed as a social worker and program director for 34 years. Throughout those years he worked with county and state governments advocating for mental health services and programs and implementing innovative group home settings for special populations. After retiring from Lakeland Mental Health Center he established a private counseling service, and provided professional consultation to area headstart programs and Lake Region Hospital. He served as a church council member and president of the congregation of Bethlehem Lutheran Church, and he held leadership positions in several clubs and organizations including, past president of the Kiwanis Club and the Sons of Norway. As an avid hunter and fisherman he enjoyed the outdoors and spending time at his Clitherall Lake cottage with family and friends. His interest and pride in his Norwegian heritage lead him to organize and guide tours to all the Scandinavian countries, enabling many others to enjoy his knowledge and enthusiasm. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Monroe. He is survived by his wife, Evelyn; one son, David (Joy) and granddaughter, Sarah, all of Liberyville, Ill.; one daughter, Jane of Rollingstone; one sister, Ida; brothers, James (Marguerite) and Verner, all of Carlton, brother, Albert (Loretta) of Cloquet; nieces; nephews and cousins. There was no visitation. Memorial service was at 1 p.m. on Tuesday at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Fergus Falls. Rev. Paul Nelson officiated. Brenda Hage, 39, Hinckley, died Jan. 14, 1999 at Mora. She was a nurse, an EMT and part owner of D&B Auto Repair in Hinckley. She is survived by her husband, Darby; one son, Joshua and one daughter, Abby, both at home; one brother, James Richards of Mahtowa; two sisters, Deborah (Ed) Madison of Le Suer and Glenice (Florian) Tomczak of Kettle River; her parents, Glen and Doris Richards of Mahtowa; mother and father-in-law, Theodore and Diane Hage and paternal grandmother, Dorothy Richards of Cromwell. Mabel Johnson 1904 - 1999, 94, Cloquet, died Sunday, Jan. 17, 1999 at the Cloquet Community Memorial Hospital-Convalescent Care Section. She was born on Jan. 20, 1904 in Norman County to Severt and Gertrude (Flaw) Tranholt. She was a Cloquet resident for over 60 years and a member of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, William; one son, Clifford; six sisters and two brothers. She is survived by a son, Al (Revae) Johnson of Roswell, N.M.; one sister, Helma Hoyt of Pontiac, Mi.; one brother, Harry Tranholt of Trent, Wash.; one granddaughter, Susan (George) Timmerman; two great-granddaughters, Amanda and Sarah; two step-grandchildren, Brian and Joy; and many nieces and nephews. Pauline R. Jokinen 1926 - 1999, 73, Cloquet, died Sunday, Jan. 17, 1999 in the Carlton Nursing Home. She was born on Jan. 16, 1926 in Ely to Peter and Margaret (Kuzma) Jerich. In 1950, she moved to Cloquet where she married Charles Jokinen. She farmed and logged with her husband. She was a member of the Young at Hearts and the Golden Voices at the Carlton Nursing Home. She was a former member of St. Mary and Joseph’s Catholic Church in Sawyer. She enjoyed gardening. She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles in 1989; a daughter, Rosemary Russ and a granddaughter, Pamela Rostveit. She is survived by two sons, Charles (Karen) Jokinen of Barnum and Frank Russ; two daughters, Barb Kilpela of Bagley and Kathleen (Larry) Carlson of Carlton; stepdaughter, Elsie Faye (Frank) Warren of Gulf Breeze, Fla.; eight grandchildren and several great-grandchildren. Esther H. Ness 1922 - 1999, 76, Cloquet, died Friday, Jan. 15, 1999 at her home. She was born on Dec. 7, 1922 in Palisade to the Late Rev. Andrew and Laura (Larsen) Ness. She graduated from Cloquet High School. She was a confidential secretary for the former Northwest Paper Company in Cloquet from 1940-1982. She enjoyed music, fishing and playing baseball with her nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, Curtiss Ness; one sister, Ruth Alstad and one nephew, Russell Ness. She is survived by two sisters, Jane and Linda Ness, both of Cloquet; nieces, Bobbi Gesuale of Billings, Mont., Lorraine Deming of Great Falls, Mont. and Marilyn Alstad of Bennington, Vt.; nephews, James Ness of Bozeman, Mont. and James Alstad of Grand Rapids; and was a special great-aunt and buddy to Jason, Brett, Matthew, Glenna, James and Marilyn Alstad. Funeral services were held on Sunday at 3 p.m. at the Cloquet Presbyterian Church with Rev. Marilee Olson officiating. Interment followed in Hillcrest Cemetery. Dion Shawn DeFoe, 38, Cloquet, died Saturday, Jan. 30, 1999 in Brookston while snowmobiling. He was born in Duluth and has resided in this area most of his life. He served in the Untied States Marine Corp., and was employed for the past 15 years in construction and masonry work on the Fond du Lac Indian Reservation. He was an avid outdoorsman enjoying hunting and fishing. He was preceded in death by his father, Francis F., Jr. in 1967. He is survived by his wife, Julie; a daughter, Desirae Kaylee DeFoe at home; a son, Joshua Shane DeFoe of White Bear Lake; his mother, Judith DeFoe of Superior, Wis.; three sisters, Dawn (Arnold) Bos of Duluth, Alaina (Paul) Schad of Cloquet and Carrie (Jose) Serrano of Roseville; and several nieces and nephews. Visitation was from 5-7 p.m. Tuesday in Bell Brothers Chapel and continued from the 10-11 a.m. service Wednesday in Fond du Lac Community Church, Fond du Lac. Nada Joseph 1958 - 1999, Nada Joseph began another journey on Jan. 28, 1999 after a courageous battle with breast cancer. Nada enjoyed all aspects of life, especially the closeness of her friends who were with her at her passing. Nada was a talented musician and vocalist and her favorite performing stage was around the campfire at Kamp Kiva. Nada enjoyed going to camp, playing her guitar, cutting wood with her chainsaw, and spending time with her dogs, Rio and Niijii. She also enjoyed cross country skiing, working out and eating at the Wheels Restaurant. Nada was born in Cloquet on Sept. 19, 1958 and was a member of the Fond du Lac Band of Chippewa Indians. She graduated from Central State University in Edmond, Okla. where she lettered on the college softball team. Nada worked for the Department of Corrections in Florida and later was the assistant security director for the Black Bear Casino in Cloquet. Most recently, Nada was employed by the Alger Correctional Facility in Munising. Nada was also a member of the Marquette Women’s Softball League, the Power Station Gym and was an avid fan of the Northern Lites Women’s Hockey Team. She served on the committee boat for the Marquette Yacht Club this past summer. She is survived by her partner, Brenda Melville of Marquette; her mother, Delia Moreland of Cloquet; sisters, Karen Wallace of Seattle, Wash., Bonnie Wallace of Cloquet, Shirley Wallace of Cloquet and Juanita Wallace of Edmond, Okla.; brothers, Robert Wallace of Germany, Jack Wallace of White Bear Lake and Donald Wallace of Cloquet; and many friends and coworkers who will miss her smiling face and vibrant personality. A celebration of Nada’s life took place on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. at the Canale Tonella Funeral Home in Marquette with Rev. Jon Magnuson and Rev. Father John Martignon officiating. Her family greeted relatives and friends at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday at the funeral home. Charles M. Ketchum 1918 - 1999, 80, Moose Lake, died on Wednesday, Jan. 27, 1999 in St. Luke’s Hospital, Duluth. He was born on Sept. 16, 1918 in Waseca to Charles C. and Elva (Fogarty) Ketchum. He lived in St. Paul and in 1927, moved to Kerrick where he grew up and attended school. Chuck was an Army Veteran of WWII and was awarded the Bronze Star and the Combat Infantryman Badge. On April 24, 1948, Chuck married Gloria Murphy in Moose Lake. They lived in Kerrick where Chuck worked at the Kerrick Feed Store and was a member of the Kerrick Fire Department. Chuck later worked as a teamster truck driver for Brenny-Dahl in Cloquet for over 23 years, retiring in 1975. After retirement, Chuck continued to work various jobs until 1995. Chuck and Gloria moved to Moose Lake in 1988. He was a member of Hope Lutheran Church, Pedersen-Maunula American Legion 379 and the National Multiple Sclerosis Society where he volunteered many hours. Chuck enjoyed golfing, bowling and camping. Chuck was a wonderful devoted caretaker of his wife. He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Elva Ketchum. He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Gloria; two sons, Chuck (Ellie) Ketchum of River Falls, Wis. and David (Sylvia) Ketchum of Sturgeon Lake; two daughters, Judith (Bob) Schmidt of Wrenshall and Jacqueline (James) Ogilvie of Washburn, Wis.; six brothers, Raymond (Grace) of Esko, James of Moose Lake, Donald (Jean) of Carlton, Kenneth (Wilma) of Cloquet, Richard (Bonnie) of Mora and Paul (Bev) of Carlton; a sister, Rose Ann McKeller of Brook Park; 10 grandchildren, Kevin, Kristy, Keith, Jenell, James, Amanda, Charlie, Vanessa, Erica and Lynn; four great-grandchildren, Shanelle, Shayla, Bryce and Brady; and numerous nieces, nephews and friends. Aili Seppala 1919 - 1999, 79, Esko, died Saturday, Jan. 30, 1999 in St. Mary’s Medical Center, Duluth. She was born on Oct. 24, 1919 in Cloquet to Viktor and Aina Vaineo. Aili retired in 1982 from the Nopeming Nursing Home where she was a supervising registered nurse. She graduated in nursing from the Hibbing Jr. College in 1969. Prior to that, she was a licensed practical nurse at Miller Dwan Hospital. Aili had a great zest for life, and especially enjoyed dancing, fishing, traveling, reading and playing cards. In 1995, she visited her relatives in Finland and hosted their visits to Minnesota. She was preceded in death by her sisters, Lempi Vaineo and Hilda Palmer; brothers, Viljo, Charles, Eino and Emil Vaineo; stepbrothers, Johan and Frans Vainio of Finland and Arthur Wainio of Canada; stepsisters, Maria and Hilma Vainio of Finland; and two grandchildren, Christine and Brittany Seppala. She is survived by her husband of 58 years, Edward; two daughters, Bonita Korpi of Esko and Nancy Seppala of San Diego, Calif.; two sons, Leon (Virginia) of St. Paul and Keith of Esko; five grandchildren, Riku, Taavi and Anna Korpi of Esko, and Buena Fe and Aurora Lynn Seppala of St. Paul; one cousin, Esteri Tuominen in Finland; and numerous nieces and nephews in North America and Finland. The family will receive friends beginning at 5 p.m. Wednesday at the Washington Community Center, Esko. There will be a reception at 6 p.m., followed by a celebration of Aili’s life. Richard “Dick” D. Wenborg 1940 - 1999, 58, Carlton, died Sunday, Jan. 31, 1999 at St. Mary’s Medical Center in Duluth. He was born on Nov. 26, 1940 in Pine City to Arthur and Olga (Strom) Wenborg. He was active in Boy Scouting and received the Eagle Award. He graduated from Pine City High School in 1958 and went to one year of Jr. College in Harvey, Ill. He entered the U.S. Navy in June of 1959 and served for nine years as a jet mechanic. He married Bonnie Mahl on June 20, 1964 in Riverdale, Ill. He later served in the National Guard for 11 years in Minneapolis, Duluth and Cloquet. He lived in Apple Valley for six years prior to moving to Carlton in 1978. He was a member of the Nicholson-Sellgren VFW Post 2969 of Carlton, the Carl Anderson American Legion Post 262 of Cloquet, Bethany Covenant Church in Cloquet and was retired from the International Union of Operating Engineers Local 49. He loved hunting and fishing, and had all the attributes of scouting including, trustworthy, loyal and being a friend to many people. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Jack and Ted and one sister, Delphia. He is survived by his wife, Bonnie; a son, Kirk of Norfolk, Va.; a daughter, Tanya of Seattle, Wash.; one grandson, Sebastion Barth-Wenborg of Minneapolis; one sister, Ann Patricia LaLond of North Dakota; a sister-in-law, Patricia Wenborg-Durno of Bloomington; and several nieces and nephews. Visitation will be held from 6-8 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 3 at Nelson Funeral Care. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday at Bethany Covenant Church with Rev. Ken Sorhiakoff officiating. The service will be followed by full military rites presented by the Nicholson-Sellgren VFW Post 2962 Honor Guard. Arrangements by Nelson Funeral Care, Cloquet.
