Dr. Harold Erickson, Dr. Harold Erickson, retired president of Lake Superior College (LSC), Duluth, passed away on Jan. 31, 1999. Erickson was the first president of Lake Superior College, between July 1, 1995 and June 30, 1997. Prior to the merger of Duluth’s Community and Technical Colleges and establishment of Lake Superior College, Erickson served as president of Duluth Technical College (DTC), a position he held since 1990. Previously, Erickson served three years as vice president of Brainerd Technical College and 20 years as an administrator at Western Wisconsin Technical College in LaCrosse, Wis. He also participated in a Harvard Leadership Program for educational leaders. In his last year of service to the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities, he also served as a Senior Academic Fellow for Strategic Planning and Interim President of St. cloud Technical College. Visitation was held from 5-7 p.m. Wednesday at the Jarvi-Dowd Chapel, Duluth. A sharing of memories followed at 7 p.m. The funeral service was conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Michael’s Church, Duluth. It was his wish that memorials be directed to the Lake Superior College Foundation Scholarship Fund that was established in his name when he retired. Eleanor M. (Mushinski) Holm 1916 - 1999, 82, Cromwell, died Thursday, Feb. 4, 1999 in Cloquet Memorial Nursing Home. She was born on Oct. 24, 1916 in McKinley to John and Mary Laskowski Mushinski. She had attended school in Gilbert. Eleanor moved to Duluth in 1940. In July of 1959, she married Raymond Holm and from then on made her home in Cromwell. She had worked at Diamond Tool and Horseshoe for several years. She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Angeline Mushinski. She is survived by her husband, Raymond; sisters, Frances Seguin of Duluth, Helen Klimek of Williamsburg, Va., Agnes L. Miller and Genevieve P. Beaudoin, both of Duluth; brother, Bernard (Vivian) Mushinski of Maplewood; and several nieces and nephews. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until the 11 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial on Monday at Holy Family Catholic Church, Duluth. Entombment will be at Calvary Cemetery. Andrew Leppioja 1908 - 1999, 90, Cloquet, formerly of Kettle River, died Wednesday, Feb. 3, 1999 in Community Memorial Nursing Home in Cloquet. He was born on May 23, 1908 in Painesdale, Mich., to Matt and Miina (Keranen) Leppioja. He farmed and logged most of his life. During the 60s and 70s, he worked at Hyman Michaels in Duluth. He moved to Cloquet in 1990. He was preceded in death by four brothers, Matt, William, Wayne and Ilmer. He is survived by two sisters, Elma (James) McMillan of Esko and Martha Niemi of Springfield, Miss.; sisters-in-law, Louise Leppioja of Esko and Hazel Leppioja of Carlton; and several nieces and nephews. Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. on Sunday in Northland Funeral Home, Cloquet. Visitation will continue from 10 a.m. until the 11 a.m. service on Monday in Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Kettle River. Burial will be in Holy Trinity Cemetery in Kettle River. Loretta Evelyn Stueber 1911 - 1999, 87, Cloquet, formerly of McGregor, passed away peacefully on Monday, Feb. 1, 1999 in Cloquet Community Memorial Hospital and Convalescent Nursing Care Section. Loretta was born on Sept. 21, 1911. She was raised and went to school in Minneapolis. Loretta married Gerhard Stueber on May 30, 1936 in Minneapolis. They were married for 55 years, until Gerhard passed away in 1991. Loretta lived in the McGregor area for 50 years, where they raised their children. She was preceded in death by her parents, a brother and a granddaughter. She will be sadly missed by her brother, George of Minneapolis; sons, Patrick of Evergreen, Colo., Richard of Cloquet and Charles (Teri) of Minneapolis; nine grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Visitation was held from 5-7 p.m. on Friday with a service at 7 p.m. in Barr Brothers Funeral Home. Father Eugene Lyttle officiated. A private inurnment will take place at a later date. Bertina “Mae” Bennett 1925 - 1999, 73, Floodwood, died Tuesday, Feb. 9, 1999 in Community Memorial Hospital, Cloquet. She was born on May 25, 1925 in Benson to Ferdinand and Josephine (Carlson) Johnson. She grew up in Benson. She married Walter Bennett on May 15, 1951 in Wadena. They lived in Wadena until 1952 at which time they moved to Virginia. In 1964, they moved to Floodwood. She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Benson. She was preceded in death by her husband, Walter in 1977; one brother, Charles Johnson; and two sisters, Margaret Johanson and Marion Rice. She is survived by four sons, Melvin and Steven, both of Floodwood, Dean (Linda) of Janesville and Lowell (Kathy) of Bovey; a daughter, Rose Ann of Floodwood; a brother, Bueford (Evelyn) Johnson of Vancouver, Wash.; sisters, Rosalie Lucking and Lillian Grussing, both of Benson, Fran (Dwight) Jensen of Holloway, Ruth Miller of Appleton, Florence Becky of Lady Lake, Fla. and Gladys Klicke of Vancouver, Wash. and five grandchildren. Visitation was held from 12 Noon until the 1 p.m. service on Friday in Northland Funeral Home, Cloquet. Graveside services will be at 1 p.m. on Saturday in the Benson City Cemetery, Benson. Muriel Desautel 1926 - 1999, 72, Duluth, formerly of Cloquet, passed away Feb. 8, 1999 in Chris Jensen Nursing Home, Duluth. She was born on May 21, 1926 in Red Lake Falls. She was a former member of Queen of Peace Catholic Church and St. Mary’s Star of the Sea. Muriel married Armond Desautel on Feb. 11, 1950. She was a homemaker. She was preceded in death by her parents and two sisters. She is survived by her husband, Armond of Duluth; sons, Gary (Peggy) and Ronald, both of Duluth and Dale of Brookston; four grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Visitation was held at 1 p.m. on Wednesday with Mass of Christian Burial at 3 p.m. in St. Mary’s Star of the Sea Catholic Church, Duluth. Monsignor Patrick McDowell officiated. Robert Peterson 1916 - 1999, 82, Superior, Wis., died Thursday, Feb. 4, 1999 at St. Mary’s Medical Center, Duluth. He was born on Aug. 30, 1916 in Billings Park, Wis., to Edward and Hilda (Ytterdahl) Peterson. He was a longtime resident of Patzau, residing there for 77 years. During the depression he rode the freight trains west, finding employment harvesting grain near Rugby, N.D. He was employed by Koppers Company, Inc. from 1938-1970 and by the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources in Pattison Park from 1972 until his retirement in 1978. On April 8, 1944, he married Joyce Webber in Carlton. He had a great love of the outdoors, and was an avid hunter, trapper and fisherman. He had a great interest in the early history of the area, and devoted many years of his life locating and excavating artifacts from the early logging camps. He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Robert E. Peterson in 1997 and a brother, Roy Peterson in 1990. He is survived by a son, Lynn Peterson of Foxboro; two daughters, Wendy Peterson of Kenosha and Maureen Danielson of Foxboro; two sisters, Estella West of Reseda, Calif. and Esther Denston of Superior, Wis.; a brother, Arthur Peterson of Duluth; and several nieces and nephews. At his request, there will be no services. Cremation will be followed by his burial in the family lot at a later date in the Summit Cemetery, Foxboro. Arrangements by Downs Funeral Home.

Julia “Ellen” (Jay) Quarn 1904 - 1999, 95, Cloquet, passed away Monday, Feb. 8, 1999 in the Cloquet Community Memorial Hospital and Convalescent Nursing Care Section. She was born on Jan. 29, 1904 in Brule, Wis., to Thomas William and Julia Ann Gansel Jay. The family moved from Brule, Wis. to Duluth in Oct. 1916 and from Duluth to Wales in Nov. 1919. She attended elementary schools in Brule and Duluth, graduating from Two Harbors High School in the Class of 1923. Upon graduating from the Duluth Business University, Ellen worked in various office positions. Ellen married Herbert L. Quarn on Aug. 21, 1935 in Wales. They lived in Duluth before moving to Cloquet in October 1961. Ellen worked for Attorney Lawrence Yetka in Cloquet as a bookkeeper until her retirement in 1977. Ellen was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Duluth, since May 1928 and a member of the Presbyterian Esther Circle. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Herbert on Jan. 24, 1968; sisters, Nellie Mackie of Ely, Ina Belle Jay of St. Paul; brothers, Everett Jay of St. Paul and Thomas Jay of Beloit, Wis. She is survived by nephews, Jay R. Mackie of Ely, Thomas J. Mackie of Spooner, Wis. and a niece, Anne Lisa Mackie Ponciroli of Ledyard, Conn. Darlene Mae Ruhnke 1941 - 1999, 57, Cloquet, died Wednesday, Feb. 10, 1999 in Cloquet Community Memorial Hospital. She was born on Nov. 6, 1941 in Wrenshall to Emil and Dorothy (Stroud) Ruhnke, Sr. She was a volunteer for the Outreach Center and a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Cloquet. She was preceded in death by her parents; step-father, Arthur Tillman and a brother, Arnold Ruhnke. She is survived by two sons, David Manderfield of Columbia Heights and Billy Ruhnke of Cloquet; a daughter, Cynthia Ruhnke of Cloquet; three brothers, Ronald (Sue) Ruhnke of St. Louis Park, Harold (Dorothy) Ruhnke of Wrenshall and Emil (Susie) Ruhnke of Duluth; two sisters, Lucille (Harley) Brophy of Waite Park and Luella (Maurice) Bandle of Wrenshall; and many nieces, nephews and friends. Evelyn E. (Anderson) Salo 1929 - 1999, 69, Cloquet, died Tuesday, Feb. 9, 1999 in her home. She was born on June 30, 1929 in Stoney Brook Township to Leonard and Hilja (Siilanpa) Anderson. She married Leonard Salo and together they farmed in Stoney Brook Township for 25 years. She lived in Saginaw before moving to Cloquet in 1990. She was a waitress for 30 years at various supper clubs including, the Golden Gate, Gillettes and Eldes. She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, The Women of the Moose Chapter 256, the AARP Chapter 3058, the Eagles Auxiliary 1163, the Finlandia Club and a Birthday Club that has been meeting since 1951. She was preceded in death by her husband, Leonard; a sister, Ruth Gustafson and a brother, Bill Anderson. She is survived by four daughters, Diane Montgomery of Stillwater, Okla., Mae (Ed) Pierson of Duluth, Cindy Salo of Kirkland, Wash. and Jan (Steve) Salo Korby of Cloquet; brother, Robert S. (Joann) Anderson of Cloquet; sister, Helen Lahti of Boynton Beach, Fla.; sister-in-law, Jane Elaine Anderson of Duluth and nine grandchildren. Hilma J. Seikkula 1901 - 1999, 97, a lifelong Cloquet area resident, died Wednesday, Feb. 10, 1999 in Cloquet Community Memorial Nursing Home. She was born on April 19, 1901 in Thomson Township to Henry and Gustava (Muotka) Pera. She was a member of St. Matthews Lutheran Church, Esko. She was preceded in death by her husband, Niilo; a son, Leslie; to grandchildren, Dennis and Robert Seikkula; four sisters and three brothers. She is survived by a daughter, Helen (Jim) Harris of Lucerne, Calif.; three sons, Leo (Doris) of Lakeville, Fred (Olga) of Spokane, Wash. and Robert (Barbara) of Martinez, Calif.; 16 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. Judesta Clagett “J.C.” Christian 1946 - 1999, “The Shadow Master,” “Rev. Ananda Kasyapa,” “#1,” 52, Cloquet, died from cancer on Friday, Feb. 12, 1999 at St. Mary’s Medical Center, Duluth. He was born on July 22, 1946 in Ontario, Calif., to James and Agnes (Cline) White. Judesta was a beautiful, strong and independent man. He was a ‘jack of all trades,’ a tattoo artist for over 35 years, a Buddhist priest and a Vietnam Navy Veteran. When asked what he truly loved in life, he replied, “My children, my Harley, my art and my women.” He was preceded in death by his father, James White. He is survived by his wife, Julie Christian of Duluth; his mother, Agnes White of Vallejo, Calif.; his twin sisters, Diana (Jerry) Williams of Lakehead, Calif. and Donna White of Anderson, Calif.; his seven extraordinarily beautiful daughters, Cordelia (David) Swanson of Duluth, and her mother, Judith Jenkins of Corning, Calif, Melissa Christian of Boulder, Colo, Clarissa Christian of Duluth, Cassandra Christian of Duluth, Sabrina Christian of Culver, Theresa Marie J.C. Christian of Culver, and their mother, Margie Peterson of Culver and Rebecca Christian of Duluth; his only son, Rodney (Cynthia) Riddle of Nice, Calif; his grandson, Christopher Rhines of Lakeport, Calif.; his brothers; his friends; and Maura Rose Corey and the work of her hands. James “Jim” Norman Johnson 1922 - 1999, 76, Cloquet, passed away on Feb. 12, 1999 in the Carlton Nursing Home. He was born on Nov. 17, 1922 in Cloquet to Theodore G. and Myrna M. (Halverson) Johnson in Cloquet. He attended school in Cloquet. James began working at the Wood Conversion Company, now Conwed, in 1940. He served in the United States Army during WWII. He returned in 1948 to work at Wood Conversion, retiring in 1978. He was a member of the Hebert-Kennedy VFW Post 3979 and the Carl Anderson American Legion Post 262. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Lolita in 1984; one brother and one sister. He is survived by his sons, James D. (Patty) Johnson of Long Island, N.Y., Jeff N. (Darla) Johnson of Denton, Texas and Scott R. Johnson of Estes Park, Colo.; daughters, Holly Johnson of Minneapolis and Patti (Paul) Stevenson of Cloquet; 18 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. John “Melvin” Johnson 1919 - 1999, 79, Floodwood, died Saturday, Feb. 13, 1999 in his home. He was born on Aug. 21, 1919 in Badger, S.D. to John and Annie (Moe) Johnson. He moved to Floodwood with his family in 1933. He worked in the CCC camps until 1941. He served in the Army during WWII with the Eighth Artillery Observation Battalion. After the war he returned to Floodwood and worked in logging. During the 50s he was a ranch worker in Montana. He returned to Floodwood and owned the Fairway Grocery Store. He later worked for Weyerhauser Inc. in Cloquet until retiring in 1981. He married Ina Mackey on Sept. 1, 1973. He was a member of the Floodwood VFW Post 8299, the Cloquet VFW Post 3979 and the Cloquet American Legion Post 262. He was preceded in death by a brother, Neale. He is survived by his wife, Ina of Floodwood; stepchildren, David (Lea) Heikkila of Finland, Europe, Mary Peterson of Moose Lake, Susan Miller of Duluth and Edward (Barb) Heikkila of Caribou Lake; sisters, Arlene (Christ) Beckman of Floodwood, Clarice (Edward) Schroeder of Omaha, Neb.; seven step-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Visitation was held from 10 a.m. until the 11 a.m. service on Tuesday in Floodwood Assemblies of God Church. Military honors was accorded by the Cloquet Combined Honor Guard and the Floodwood VFW. Lawrence “Tuffy” Rudebeck 1927 - 1999, 71, Barnum, entered eternal rest on Sunday, Feb. 14, 1999 in his home with his family by his side after a courageous battle with cancer. He was born on Dec. 6, 1927 in St. Paul to Roy and Marie (Basche) Rudebeck. As a child, he moved to Barnum with his family where he grew up and attended school. He was an Army Veteran of the Korean War. On Jan. 7, 1961, he married Shirley Arduser in Moose Lake. He worked for the MNDOT for over 40 years. He was very active in his community. He served on the Barnum City Council and was mayor for several years, Moose Lake Hospital Board for over 14 years, Barnum School Board, Barnum Community Club for over 38 years and its charities committee and the Barnum Fire Department for over 25 years where he had served as chief. He sold many raffle tickets to benefit the youth of the community. He was a member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church, Barnum. He enjoyed fishing, golfing, hunting and wintering in Florida, which he had done the last seven years. He was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his wife of 38 years, Shirley; three sons, Rick (Loretta), Michael (Cathy) and Marshall (Jean Walker), all of Barnum; and three grandchildren, Trina, Chad and Adam Rudebeck. Funeral services will be held today, Wednesday, at 2 p.m. in Emmanuel Lutheran Church, Barnum. Rev. Matthew A. Payne will officiate. Sonia Rowe will be the organist and Clarice Rowe will be the soloist. Honorary pallbearers will be Charles Arduser, Ronald Osborne, Harry Solheim, Edward Langness, Gerald Smith and Richard Nelson. Jukka Armas “John” Sikio 1959 - 1999, 39, Duluth, died Sunday, Feb. 7, 1999, as the result of a snowmobile accident. He was born on July 17, 1959 in Jyvaskyla, Finland, to Aarne and Anja Heiskanen Sikio. In 1962, he moved to Duluth and later attended Denfeld High School. As a youth, John was active in the Duluth Ski Jumping Club and the Duluth Playhouse. He was a member of the Finlandia Club in Thunder Bay, Ontario. A ‘jack of all trades,’ he had worked as a carpenter and later as a plumber for J&D Enterprises. John was also a drummer for several Duluth bands and Finnish bands in Thunder Bay, Ontario. On July 8, 1989, he married Heli Ketola in Thunder Bay, Ontario. John was a lover of the outdoors and especially liked fishing. He had a gift for making people laugh and was a talented musician. He will be sadly missed by his family and friends. Johnny Ho-Ho loved his sticky buns, too. He was preceded in death by his grandparents in Finland. He is survived by his wife, Heli who is expecting their first child; one daughter, Dayba Sikio-Mesabe and her husband, Billy Leonard of Duluth; two brothers, Peter and his wife, Monica of Saginaw and Nunnu and his wife, Shari Meyer of Duluth; one granddaughter, Kaitlyn; and many uncles, and aunts in Finland and the United States. Visitation was held on Monday from 5-7 p.m. at Williams-Lobermeier Funeral Home. Visitation continued on Tuesday from 11 a.m. until the 12 Noon funeral service at Christ Lutheran Church. Raymond L. Ahlgren 1911 - 1999, 88, Cloquet, died Wednesday, Feb. 17, 1999 at the Carlton Nursing Home. He was born on Feb. 7, 1911 in Cloquet to John and Edith (Bloom) Ahlgren and was a lifelong resident. He retired from the Potlatch Corporation in 1971 with 30 years of service, working mostly in the beater room and as a janitor. He was also a member of the Potlatch Quarter Century Club. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Aaran. He is survived by one sister, Viola Polvi of Cloquet; three nieces, Patricia (Frank) Meisner of Cloquet, Pauline (Vern) Deutsch-Bluemle of Mesa, Ariz. and Karon (Vic) Langer of Diamond Bluff, Wis.; and several great-nieces and nephews. Visitation will be today, Saturday, from 12 Noon until the 1 p.m. memorial service at Nelson Funeral Care, Cloquet. The Rev. Peter Franz will officiate. Ricky Hanhela 1958 - 1999, Ricky M. Hanhela passed away on Feb. 6, 1999. The following information was omitted from the obituary: Ricky is survived by his grandmother, Lillian A. Hanhela, his aunt Elaine Biss and family, and his aunt, Jane Maki and family. He will be greatly missed by all.

Eva Ann Magnuson 1920 - 1999, 78, Crosby, died on Thursday, Feb. 18, 1999 at the Cuyuna Regional Care Center in Crosby. She was born on May 28, 1920 in Ironton to Frank and Odelia (Benoit) Morin. She married Richard E. Magnuson in July, 1948 in Crosby. She taught elementary school for 30 years in Avon, Pine City, Cloquet and Carlton. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Richard; one brother and four sisters. She is survived by two sisters, Alice Leighton of Ironton and Margaret Humphrey of Crosby. Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. today, Saturday at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Crosby with Father Howard Eisel officiating. Burial will be at the Lakewood Cemetery, Crosby. Robert A. Shannon 1917 - 1999, 81, Independence, Mo., died Wednesday, Feb. 3, 1999. Mr. Shannon was born on Sept. 9, 1917 in Carlton and had lived in Independence since 1939. He was a veteran of WWII, serving in the Coast Guard and Merchant Marines. He retired in 1976 from Amoco (Standard Oil) after 28 years of service. He was a member of the Tribe of Mic-O-Say, the Knights of Columbus Council 3430 and St. Mary’s Catholic Church. He was preceded in death by his wife, Lee Shannon in 1995. He is survived by his son, Mike Shannon and his daughter, Pat Shannon Trask, both of Independence; two brothers, Joseph “Bus” Shannon of Stuart, Fla. and Lawrence Shannon of Woodbridge, Va. and a sister, Doris Seevers of El Monte, Calif. Mass of Christian burial was held at 11 a.m. on Saturday at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Independence. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery. The family suggests contributions to the Alzheimer’s Association. Arrangements by George C. Carson and Sons Independence Chapel.
