Helmer “Jr.” Olson 1935 - 1999, 63, Wright, died April 8, 1999, in Mercy Hospital, Moose Lake. He was born on Oct. 23, 1935, to Helmer and Helen (Ingham) Olson in Northfield. He grew up and attended school in Northfield. He farmed in the Northfield area. He also worked for Gerald Cleland as a tiling man and for Lockman Standard in Northfield. In 1980, he moved to Kettle River where he farmed and later moved to Wright where he continued to farm. He was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by two brothers, Robert Olson of Wright and Franklin (Sandra) Olson of Cromwell; two nieces and two nephews. Funeral services will be held on Monday at 10 a.m. in Hamlin-Hansen-Kosloski Funeral Home, Moose Lake. Rev. N. Matt Saarem will officiate. Burial will be on Tuesday at 1 p.m. in Northfield Cemetery, Northfield. Arrangements by Hamlin-Hansen-Kosloski Funeral Home, Moose Lake.

Theodore Walczak 1914 - 1999, 84, Kettle River, died April 8, 1999, in St. Luke’s Hospital, Duluth. He was born on July 21, 1914 to Joseph and Martha (Maniak) Walczak in Sturgeon Lake. He grew up in Silver Township where he lived and worked on the family farm. He also worked for the Cunningham family in Sturgeon Lake and later for logging camps. He was an Army Veteran of WWII and served during the Pacific Theater. After the war, he returned to the family farm. On Oct. 14, 1950, he married Albena Urbaneak in Duluth. They resided in Silver Township on the family farm. He was a member of the Cloquet VFW 3979 Hebert-Kennedy Post. He is survived by his wife, Albena; two sons, Joseph (Connie) of Auberry, Calif. and Steve (Debra) of Moose Lake; a brother, Bernard Walczak of Moose Lake; four sisters, Gertrude Dunaiski of Duluth, Agnes Elam of Pontiac, Mich., Anna Kulas of Sturgeon Lake and Julia Meger of Cloquet; six grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. Visitation will be held from 2-4 p.m. Sunday in Hamiln-Hansen-Kosloski Funeral Home, Moose Lake. Hilda Elvira Yoki 1909 - 1999, 89, formerly of Cloquet, died Thursday April 8, 1999, in Lakeshore Lutheran Home, Duluth. She was born on Nov. 10, 1909, in Ponsford to Ole and Hedvig (Piri) Peterson. She grew up in Ponsford. On June 24, 1930, she married Jalmer Yoki in Menahga and they lived in Osage from 1930 to 1977. Hilda moved to Cloquet in 1977. She was a member of the Independent Apostolic Lutheran Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jalmer, in 1967; her son, Mahlon, in 1998; three brothers, Oscar, Arthur and Charles; and two sisters, Anna Shirlee and Hilma Harju. She is survived by four daughters, Evelyn Heikkila of Duluth, Donna Mae (James) Kovala of Osage, Elaine (John) Hyland of Redding, Calif., and Karen Yoki of Maple Grove; one son, Alden (Mary) Yoki of Hurst, Texas; 16 grandchildren and 31 great-grandchildren. Visitation will be held from 4-7 p.m. Sunday in Northland Funeral Home, Cloquet, and will continue from 12 Noon until the 1 p.m. funeral service Monday in the Independent Apostolic Lutheran Church in Menahga. Gertrude (Holmes) Koplen, 82, Waterford, Calif., died in the hospital on Tuesday, March 30, 1999. She was born to John and Hilja (Finberg) Holmes, and grew up in Cromwell and graduated from the Cromwell High School. In 1935, she married Leo Koplen of Wright. About 1940, they moved to Oakland, Calif. and recently she moved to Waterford. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Leo; and her two brothers, Elmer and Eino Holmes. She is survived by her son, Leroy; her grandson, Johnny; two great-grandchildren; nieces; nephews; and many cousins of the Jacob Finberg family from this area. Memorial services were held Tuesday in Hayward, Calif. at The Chapel of The Times.

Monta Delores Childers 1914 - 1999, 84, Duluth, died Friday, April 2, 1999, in her home with her daughter, Cheryl Childers, by her side. She was born on May 16, 1914, in Minneapolis to Aarington Stoddard and Elsie Pavlik. She married Robert Lee Childers on May 1, 1940, in Minneapolis. She lived in Hobert and Chesterton, Ind. until 1971 when they moved to Canyon. She served for two years as chair of the Issues and Resolutions Task Force, was president of the Senior Citizens Coalition of Northeastern Minnesota, served as Cotton area Senior Citizens president from 1979 to 1981, Suburban Area vice president from 1981 to 1983 and executive vice president of the Senior Citizens Coalition from 1983 to 1985. She worked on the Information Book from 1979 to 1987, was chairperson of the Information Book Committee from 1985 to 1987, was chairperson of the Senior Coalition Convention from 1980 to 1987, Health Committee chairperson from 1985 to 1987 and treasurer of Coordinating on Aging. She was a band mother, Girl Scouts and Brownie leader, a Daughter of the Revolutionary War, Jobs Daughters and was employed as a private cook. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Childers in 1991. She is survived by three daughters, Lorelie (Fred) Euntch of Portage, Ind., Margo Clouse of Chesterton, Ind. and Cheryl Childers of Canyon; nine grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren and five nephews. Michael L. Pollak, 21, New Richmond, Wis., formerly of Wrenshall, died Saturday, April 3, 1999. He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents and maternal grandfather. He is survived by his maternal grandmother, Mary Seboe of Wrenshall; his parents, Albert and Irene Pollak of Birchwood, Wis.; three brothers, Troy (Karen) of Racine, Wis., Matthew (Shelly) of Rice Lake, Wis. and James (Lori) of Exland, Wis.; three sisters, Trisha of Racine, Wis., Theresa (Steve) Doble of Pacific, Wash. and Mary (Dave) Grecinger of Cloquet; four nephews and eight nieces. Visitation was held from 7-9 p.m. Thursday in Wefelmeyer Funeral Home, Cloquet. Visitation continued on Friday one hour prior to the 11 a.m. funeral service at the funeral home. Julia Bradford 1910 - 1999, 88, Duluth, died Wednesday, April 7, 1999, in Chris Jensen Nursing Home, Duluth. She was born on April 17, 1910, to William and Grace Wanous in Aitkin where the family lived until 1922 when they moved to wright. She attended Cromwell High School and in 1931, she married Forrest Bradford. She was active in many community activities including, PTA, the Carlton County Extension Board, lay member of Carlton County Welfare Board, Carlton VFW Auxiliary and Cromwell-Wright American Legion Auxiliary. She was a hot lunch cook at Wright School for several years. She worked at Moose Lake State Hospital for 10 years, beginning as a psychiatric technician and then becoming a licensed practical nurse. She especially enjoyed her work with chemically dependent patients and continued working with CD Programs after her retirement in 1975. She moved to Duluth in 1975, and was active in RSVP and at Pennel Park where she lived. She was a member of Holy Cross Lutheran Church, Duluth. She was preceded in death by her husband, Forrest; an infant son; her son, Gordon; her brother, William Wanous; a grandson, Barry Bradford and a daughter-in-law, Ruth Bradford. She is survived by a son, Gerald (Jeannette) Bradford of Cromwell; a daughter-in-law, Gail Bradford of Billings, Mont.; a sister, Helen (Arnie) Tuomi of Moose Lake; six grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. Carol Marie Fistler 1923 - 1999, 75, Cloquet, passed away Tuesday, April 6, 1999, at the Cloquet Nursing Home. She was born on Dec. 26, 1923, in Cloquet to Carl J. V. and Mary (DeLarosby) Johnson. She was a 1938 graduate of the Catholic Grade School and a 1942 graduate of Cloquet High School. During WWII, she first worked at the Diamond Match Company, Cloquet, and then as an arc welder of ships at the Globe Shipbuilding Company, Superior, Wis., for two years. She also served her country as a W.A.C. medic stationed at Fort George Wright in Spokane, Wash., from 1945 to 1946. She then attended UMD and the U of M where she graduated in 1952 with a B.S. degree in nursing. On Dec. 20, 1952, she married Dr. Raymond P. Fistler and worked with him in he veterinary practice at Perham until his death in 1985. While living in Perham, she was a constituent of Perham United Methodist Church. From 1987 until 1998, she lived in Moorhead where she was a part-time art student at M.S.U. In 1998, she moved to Cloquet following the diagnosis of A.L.S. She was preceded in death by her parents; her brother, Eugene A. Johnson of Superior, Wis.; her stepfather, Emil Rauchstadt and one son, Jim Fistler of Detroit Lakes. She is survived be two children, Mrs. Nancy (James) Specker of Strasburg, Colo. and Dr. Jon (Ann) Fistler of Cloquet; five grandchildren and one sister, Lois A. Anderson of Cloquet. Visitation was held from 5-8 p.m. Friday at Nelson Funeral Care Chapel with a rosary service at 7 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Rev. Father Kenton Sailstad at 11 a.m. today, Saturday, at Queen of Peace Catholic Church, Cloquet. Pallbearers will be Gerald Johnson, Arthur Amys, George Robinson, Charles Schumacher and Neil Johnson. Mary Ann (Nahgahnub) Blacketter 1942 - 1999, 57, Sawyer, passed away Sunday, April 4, 1999, at St. Luke’s Hospital, Duluth, with her family at her side. Mary Ann was born on Feb. 27, 1942, in Sawyer to George and Martha (Abino) Nahgahnub. She had a kind and generous heart. She enjoyed fishing, music, puzzles, and being with her family and many friends. She had worked at Jeno’s in Duluth from 1970 to 1976 before going to work at the Cloquet Potlatch Corporation from 1976 to 1999. She started out as a forklift operator then later on to be the first female beater engineer in Cloquet. She was preceded in death by her husband of 37 years, James Roy Blacketter, Jr.; her parents; one brother, Francis and one sister, Gladys Dixon. She is survived by sons, James “Tubby” Blacketter III of Sawyer and Matthew Blacketter of Duluth; daughters, Melinda, Shirley and Cindy Blacketter, all of Sawyer; brothers, Mike and Don Nahgahnub of Kettle River and Arnold Nahgahnub of California; 12 grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. Visitation was held at 4 p.m. on Wednesday at the Sawyer Center and continued until the 11 a.m. funeral service on Thursday. Interment service followed at St. Mary and Joseph’s Catholic Cemetery. Renee Hammitt Supan 1955 - 1999, 43, Forest Lake, died March 26, 1999, in her home. She was born on Aug. 21, 1955, in Carlton. She married Richard Supan on May 8, 1976. She was a former member of St. Stephen Catholic Church, St. Stephen. She graduated from the University of Minnesota with a master’s degree in psychology and worked as a psychologist at East End Community Service, Oakdale. She was preceded in death by her mother, Annette Haubner Hammitt and two infant daughters. She is survived by her husband; parents, Max and Marian Hammitt of Wyoming; a daughter and sons, Faith, Richard, Jr. and Keith of Forest Lake; grandmother, Marge Haubner of Carlton; one grandson; sisters and brother, Michele Grandhoefer, Lisa Johnson, Anna Marie Verhoye and Phillip. Donald D. Eveland 1932 - 1999, 67, St. Paul, died Friday, April 9, 1999, in Barnum. He was born on June 2, 1932, in Hillsboro, Ill., to John and Blanche (Murphy) Eveland. He was a Korean Conflict Army Veteran and retired as a section man working for the Soo Line and Canadian-Pacific Railroads. He enjoyed fishing, hunting and working for the railroads. He married Lillian Longbody on Oct. 30, 1968, in Center City. He was preceded in death by his parents and his first wife, Wanda. He is survived by his wife, Lillian; a daughter, Jackie (Wesley) Watkins of Cloquet; a son, Jeff Eveland of Jacksonville, Ill.; a stepson, Larry Bushman of Grand Portage; one brother, Wendell (Delores) Eveland of Decator, Ill.; two sisters, Betty (Charles) Monk of Myrtle Beach, S.C. and Marie (Jim) Weber of Decator, Ill. and six grandchildren. Larry K. Morris 1939 - 1999, 60, Gilbert, formerly of Prairie Lake, died Saturday at Golden Crest Healthcare Center, Hibbing. He was born on March 8, 1939, in Gay, W. Va., to Virgil and Orlie (Rhodes) Morris. He served as an air policeman in the United States Air Force from 1958 to 1966. He married Arlene Buehre on Nov. 21, 1964, in Duluth. Larry was a disabled veteran since 1970, however, he had worked as a payroll clerk at Reserve Mining Company, Babbitt. He was a member of the Disabled American Veterans and AARP. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Arlene, in 1994; his sister, Glenva and one grandchild. He is survived by his son and daughters, Barb Rahkola of Cromwell, Diane (Frank) Takavitz of Eveleth, Jim (Kay) Lanhart of Brookston, Elizabeth (Buddy) Vars of Port Wentworth, Ga. and Sandra Russo of Champlin; 12 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; four brothers and five sisters. Aune Helen Heine Lahti 1912 - 1999, 86, Cloquet, died Saturday, April 10, 1999, in Cloquet Community Memorial Nursing Home. She was born on Sept. 24, 1912, in Cloquet to Matt and Ann (Aho) Heikkila. She attended schools in the Pine River area, north of Cloquet. She farmed with her first husband, Leo Heine, and assisted her neighbors with home care in the Pine River area. She also had been employed in the housekeeping departments of St. Luke’s Hospital and Cloquet Community Memorial Hospital. She was a former member of Royal Neighbors, the VFW Auxiliary in Florida and attended St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Cloquet. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Leo Heine, in 1962; her husband, Jarl “Charlie” Lahti, in 1975; two sons, Matt, in 1945 and Lawrence, in 1987; a daughter, Ailene Ojutkangas, in 1991; three sisters, Pearl Stark, Vieno Clark and Elsie Rostveit; two infant brothers and a grandson, Bruce. She is survived by two daughters, Arlene (Dan) White of Cloquet and Virginia (Ray) Hatinen of Esko; three sons, Donald (Clarice) Heine, Clarence Heine and Dale (Theresa Starr) Heine, all of Summerfield, Fla.; two sisters, Aili Stenman of Chico, Calif. and Mayme Jackson of Cloquet; 27 grandchildren; 55 great-grandchildren and several great-great-grandchildren. Jeannette (Anderson) Hillman, 78, Duluth, died Wednesday, April 7, 1999, surrounded by her loving family. She was born in Green Bay, Wis., to Albert and Idora Anderson and lived most of her life in Duluth. She was a graduate of Central High School. She married Earl Hillman in 1941 and together they raised three daughters. She worked for 25 years for Dr. Carl Eklund, retiring with him in the 80s. During her lifetime she touched many people with her love, smile, sense of humor and spunk. She loved worship music and singing, helping to carry the soprano section in her church choir for many years. She enjoyed small group Bible studies and was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church. She was also a member of the Medical Assistance Association. Up to the end of her physical life here she kept her smile, which will forever remain in memory. She was preceded in death by her husband, Earl; one sister, Sarah Jackson; two brothers, Ed and Donald Anderson and one grandson, Jeff Blackwood. She is survived by three daughters, Carol (Mick) Sertich of Duluth, Jan (Jim) Williams of Prior Lake and Gail (Mark) Walkowiak of Cloquet; one brother, Art Anderson of St. Paul; eight grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Visitation was held on Friday from 5-7 p.m. at Bell Brothers Chapel and one hour prior to the 11 a.m. service on Saturday at Westminster Presbyterian Church, Duluth. Interment was in Oneota Cemetery. George E. Nemec 1911 - 1999, 87, Meadowlands, died Wednesday, April 7, 1999, at Viewcrest Nursing Home, Duluth. He was born on Oct. 30, 1911, in Chicago to John and Antonia (Kokstein) Nemec. The family moved to Clutier, Iowa, then to Meadowlands in 1926. He later moved to Floodwood where he lived for 13 years, then back to Meadowlands where he remained. He married Mary Anna Furiel on June 24, 1935, in Meadowlands. He drove a school bus, logged, was a milk and cheese freight hauler, dairy farmer, worked in the mines on the Iron Range and retired from Coons Pacific Washplant in 1976. He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Meadowlands. He enjoyed the outdoors, hunting, fishing, gardening, woodworking and crafts. He especially cherished being with his family. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Mary Anna, on April 27, 1987; three brothers, John, Tom and Frank Nemec; a sister, Bessie Lester Scouten and a great-grandson, Adam Kozumplik. He is survived by a daughter, Mary Ann (Emil) Durovec of Meadowlands; a brother, Edward (Lucille) Nemec of Meadowlands; a sister, Emma Johanek of Meadowlands; seven grandchildren, Diane (Joe) Olson, John (Dar) Durovec, Danny (Danielle) Durovec and Lyn (Tony) Kozumplik, all of Meadowlands, Annie (Dennis) Lind of Cook, Loretta (Mike) Billman of Hermantown and Joan (Steven) Johnson of Cromwell; 20 great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; and numerous nieces and nephews. Visitation was held from 6-8 p.m. on Friday and continued one hour prior to the service. Mass of Christian Burial was at 11 a.m. on Saturday at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Meadowlands, with Rev. John Doyle as celebrant. Pallbearers were his grandsons, grandsons-in-law and a great-grandson, John Durovec, Danny Durovec, Joe Olson, Mike Billman, Steve Johnson, Tony Kozumplik and Chris Durovec. Sister Maxine Erchul, OSB, 88, Duluth, died Wednesday, April 7, 1999, at the St. Scholastica Monastery. She was born to Joseph Francis and Mary (Breznik) Erchul in Soudan and attended elementary school there. She received her secondary education at Tower-Soudan High School in Tower. She fulfilled requirements for a two-year teaching certificate at the former Duluth State Teacher’s College and earned a B.S. in elementary education from the College of St. Scholastica. Workshops in Confraternity of Christian Doctrine Leadership were taken at Marquette University, Milwaukee, Wis. and at Catholic University, Washington, D.C. She also participated in a Bible Institute at Mundelein College, Chicago, Ill. A variety of ministries were served by her during her active career. She taught elementary grades at St. Bridget’s and Our Lady of Victory, Minneapolis; Holy Name, Wayzata; Our Lady of the Sacred Heart, Cloquet; St. Thomas, International Falls and Sacred Heart, Duluth. She taught religious education classes at St. Anthony’s Parish, Ely. She served as principal and/or superior at Our Lady of Victory, Holy Name, St. Thomas and St. Anthony’s. She was an excellent typist and used her skill during the summer months by assisting with office work at Hibbing General Hospital, Hibbing and St. Mary’s Medical Center, Duluth. She later did clerical work at the library at Cathedral High School, the staff education office at St. Mary’s Medical Center and in the personnel office at the Benedictine Health Center, all in Duluth. As a volunteer, she served St. Ann’s Residence, Duluth, in the pastoral care department and tutored in the Enrichment Center at the Monastery. In 1990, her severe arthritis caused her full retirement. She was preceded in death by her parents; one brother and one sister. She is survived by two brothers, J. Thomas of Las Vegas, Nev. and Benedict of Irvine, Calif.; six sisters, Sister Antonia Erchul, OSB, of Duluth, Frances (Robert) Bizal of Chisholm, Margaret Schmidl of Huntington Beach, Calif., Olga Nykanen of Howell, Mich., Agnes (Carl) Mattson of Soudan and Victoria (John) Bobence of Ely and many other relatives. A wake service was held at 7 p.m. on Friday at Our Lady Queen of Peace Chapel, St. Scholastica Monastery. Visitation followed until 9 p.m. The Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday at Our Lady Queen of Peace Chapel. Burial was in Gethsemane Cemetery. Alice Louise Hietala 1921 - 1999, Died Wednesday, April 7, 1999, in Hospice, Metro Denver Hospital. She was born on Oct. 20, 1921, in Tamarack to Edith and August Aho. She was preceded in death by her oldest brother, Henry Aho. She is survived by her husband, Donald of Denver; her daughter, Claudia (William) Krieg of Phoenix, Ariz.; eight brothers and sisters, Ellen Resso, Esther McGuire and Dorothy (Ray) Tiili, all of Duluth, Julia Beckman and Betty (John) Holm, both of Cromwell, Arthur (Mary) Aho and Leonard (Toini) Aho, both of Tamarack and William (Thelma) Aho of Las Vegas, Nev.; and many nieces and nephews. Arne Martin Solem 1923 - 1999, 75, Duluth, died Monday, April 12, 1999, at St. Luke’s Hospital, Duluth. He was born on Dec. 12, 1923, in Duluth to John and Anna Solem. He worked as a welder at Frazier Shipyards and also as a block layer. He was a member of First Lutheran Church and the Boilermakers Union Local 117. He was preceded in death by one sister, Karen Aase and one brother, John Solem Jr. He is survived by his wife, Beverly; five sons, Glen (Delia) of Saginaw, Chris of Duluth, Lynn (Jill) of Hermantown, Lee and Scott, both of Duluth; three daughters, Debbie (Tim) Stanke of Lakeland, Shari (Jim) Jauss and Lisa (Les) Reinking, all of Duluth; two brothers, Howard and Christian Solem; three sisters, Alice Paulus, Agnes Lindgren and Ann Dahl; 14 grandchildren; and many other relatives and friends. Service was held at 11 a.m. on Friday at the Hermantown Community Church with Pastor Lynn Kern officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred. Arrangements by Dougherty Funeral Home.

Ernest A. Heinonen 1924 - 1999, 74, Duluth, died Monday, April 12, 1999, at his home. He was born on April 17, 1924, in Chisholm to David and Niemi (Niemala) Heinonen. He grew up, and worked as a farmer and logger in the Wolf Lake area. He moved to the Iron Range and worked in a bakery in Nashwauk. In the early 50s, he moved to the Two Harbors area, and worked for Kimberly-Clark, and later worked at Jeno’s in Duluth and Azcon Corporation until retiring. He enjoyed fishing in his free time. He was preceded in death by his wife, Lorraine in 1994. He is survived by his son, David of Two harbors; four daughters, Toni McGovern of Proctor, Debbie Heinonen of Brookston, Vicky Plunkett of Two Harbors and Cheryl Stavig of Ely; a brother, Arnold Hillstrom of Two Harbors; three sisters, Mae Koski of Newburg, Ore., Elvie Thompson of Largo, Fla. and Lillian Hanson of Two Harbors; eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Visitation was held from 1 p.m. until the 2 p.m. service on Thursday in French River Lutheran Church, Duluth. Arrangements by Cavallin Funeral Home.

Giles Rueben Graber, Sr., 69, Proctor, died Monday, April 12, 1999, at St. Luke’s Hospital, Duluth. He was born in Long Prairie Township and lived in Proctor since 1957. He worked for Diamond Tool, and for Western National Bank and the Proctor School as a custodian. From 1968 until 1980, he operated the Cozy Corner Cafe and in 1980, he built Graber's Cafe in Proctor, retiring in 1994. He was a former member of the Proctor Moose. He loved to hunt, and fish and be with his family. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Delores in 1987 and one daughter, Minnie Soderlund in 1989. He is survived by his wife, Janet L.; three sons, Daniel H. (Roxann) of Proctor, Paul E. (Sue) and Giles R. “Guy” Jr. (Nancy), all of Duluth; three daughters, Robin (Jerry) Schultz of Freemont, Calif., Dawn Flanagan of Texas Creek, Colo. and Julie (Kenneth) Stroik of Duluth; two stepsons, Brian (Judy) Blais and Bradley Blais, all of Brookston; two sisters, Lillian (Cal Williams) Salmi of Cloquet and Ermma Ronn of Renville; 26 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren and his grand puppy, Cocoa. Visitation was held on Wednesday from 5-8 p.m. with the service at 1 p.m. on Thursday at Bell Brothers Chapel. Entombment will be in Sunrise Memorial Park. Signe Marie (Erkkila) Mattson 1910 - 1999, 88, formerly of Esko, died Wednesday, April 14, 1999, in Arrowhead Health Care Center, Eveleth. She was born on June 10, 1910, in Thomson Township to Charles and Agnes (Hovonko) Erkkila. She grew up and attended school in Esko. She married Archie Mattson on Nov. 30, 1932, together they farmed in Esko until 1958. She worked as a housekeeper at Community Memorial Hospital in Cloquet from 1957 until retiring in 1975. She was a member of the Esko Senior Citizens and the Apostolic Lutheran Church. She moved to Eveleth in 1994. She enjoyed flower gardening, sewing, knitting, crocheting and quilting. She was preceded in death by her husband, Archie in 1993; her son, Archie, Jr. in 1948; and seven brothers, Eino, Charles Jr., Oscar, Arvid, Emil, William and Toivo. She is survived by one daughter, Judith (Stephen) Obeidzinski of Esko; one sister, Esther Hill of Esko; three grandchildren, Mark (Shelly) Obeidzinski of Esko, Paul (Roger) Coburn of Grace, Idaho, and Debra (Barton) Fanning of Chicago, Ill.; seven great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Visitation will be held from 12 Noon until the 1 p.m. service on Monday in Northland Funeral Home, Cloquet. Pastor Gary Kangas will officiate. Burial will be in Maple Grove Cemetery. Aune Helen Heine Lahti 1912 - 1999 , 86, Cloquet, died Saturday, April 10, 1999, in Cloquet Community Memorial Nursing Home. She was born on Sept. 24, 1912, in Cloquet to Matt and Anna (Aho) Heikkila. She attended schools in the Pine River area, north of Cloquet. She farmed with her first husband, Leo Heine, and assisted her neighbors with home care in the Pine River area. She also had been employed in the housekeeping departments of St. Luke’s Hospital and Cloquet Community Memorial Hospital. She was a former member of Royal Neighbors, the VFW Auxiliary in Florida and attended St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Cloquet. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Leo Heine, in 1962; her husband, Jarl “Charlie” Lahti, in 1975; two sons, Matt, in 1945 and Lawrence, in 1987; a daughter, Ailene Ojutkangas, in 1991; three sisters, Pearl Stark, Vieno Clark and Elsie Rostveit; two infant brothers and a grandson, Bruce. She is survived by two daughters, Arlene (Dan) White of Cloquet and Virginia (Ray) Hatinen of Esko; three sons, Donald (Clarice) Heine, Clarence Heine and Dale (Theresa Starr) Heine, all of Summerfield, Fla.; two sisters, Aili Stenman of Chico, Calif. and Mayme Jackson of Cloquet; 27 grandchildren; 55 great-grandchildren and several great-great-grandchildren. Visitation will be held on Thursday from 12 Noon until the 1 p.m. funeral service in Northland Funeral Home, Cloquet. Interment will follow in Pine River Cemetery, north of Cloquet. Frank Woodrow Hanson 1918 - 1999, 80, Cromwell, died Monday, April 12, 1999, in Villa Vista Nursing Home. He was born on Sept. 12, 1918, in Winton to Hogan W. and Hilda (Katzele) Hanson. He grew up in Cromwell and graduated from Cromwell High School in 1937. He married Dorothy Mae Johnson on April 8, 1939. He farmed in Cromwell from 1939 to 1995. He drove school bus in Cromwell for 10 years. He also worked at Conwed for 32 years, retiring in 1980. He was a member of Bethany Lutheran Church, the Farmers Union, the Soil and Water Conservation, the Cromwell Credit Union Board for 50 years, the Cromwell School Board, the Minnesota Democratic Farm Labor Organization, the Modern Woodmen, the Y.O.T. of Cromwell and the Sno-Gophers of Cromwell. While serving on the school board, he presented diplomas to all four of his daughters. He enjoyed traveling, snowmobiling, agate collecting, reading, hunting, cross country skiing, sight seeing, and spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy; brothers, Norman W. Hanson, Sr., Clemons Hanson and Hogan Hanson; sister, Hilda Hanson and great-grandson, Thomas V. Heino III. He is survived by four daughters, Gloria (Tom) Heino of Edgewood, Wash., Barbara (Roger) Lehti of Cromwell, Betty (Gale) Harp of Redwood Falls and Dotty (Gaylen) Brevik of Juneau, Ala; eight grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. Visitation was held from 5-7 p.m. on Thursday in Northland Funeral Home, Cloquet. Visitation continued on Friday from 11 a.m. until the 12 Noon funeral service in Bethany Lutheran Church, Cromwell. Burial will be in Forest Hill Cemetery, Cromwell. Pastor Matt Saarem officiated. Serving as pallbearers were Frank’s grandchildren, Tom Heino II, Dawn Heino, Frank Heino, Jeremy Heino, Todd Johnson, Chad Johnson, Jason Harp and Aaron Harp. Minette Thelma Gustafson 1902 - 1999, 97, died Sunday, April 11, 1999, in St. Mary’s Hospital, Reno, Nev. She was born on March 22, 1902, in Duluth to John O. Johnson and Christie A. Evanson. She married Oscar (Carl) Gustafson in 1941. She was a graduate of Duluth State Teachers College. She was an elementary school teacher in Cloquet, Esko, Wrenshall and in Oregon for 40 years before retiring in 1967. She resided in Cloquet for 65 years. She moved to Reno, Nev. in 1992. She was a volunteer at the Cloquet Memorial Hospital Gift Shop. She was a member of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, Cloquet. She also enjoyed her many dear friends and family, sewing, reading, dancing, ceramics, playing the organ and piano, singing, bowling, traveling, PTA work and the outdoors. She was preceded in death by her husband, Oscar in 1975; five brothers and a sister. She is survived by daughters, Gayle Josephson of Cloquet and Jean (John) West of Reno, Nev.; brothers, Walter and Stanley Johnson of Portland, Ore. and Glen Johnson of Scottsdale, Ariz.; a sister, Marie Ashmore of Tigert, Ore.; grandchildren, Dale Liikala of Isabella, Tammy Liikala, Kerri (Corey) Schneberger, Jon Josephson of Cloquet, Patrick (Laura) West of Reno, Nev. and John, Jr. (Amy) West of Lake Worth, Fla.; and great-grandchildren, Angie, Sarah, Seth, Jamie, Destiny and a another due in July. All of whom will miss her deeply. Memorial gathering will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, Cloquet. Inurnment took place in Reno, Nev., at Masonic Memorial Gardens.
