Aini K. Hackman 1912 - 1999, 88, Stanley, N.D., formerly of Cloquet, died Wednesday, April 14, 1999, in a Stanley, N.D., nursing home. She was born on May 10, 1912, in Stevenson to Jack and Anna Mannila. She was raised and attended school in the Jacobson area. She married Sulo Hackman on July 1, 1936, in Duluth. In 1937, they moved to Littlefork then farmed in the Jacobson area from 1943 to 1958. They moved to Two Harbors and operated a gas station until 1964. They lived in Minneapolis until retirement and then moved to Cloquet. After her husband passed away in 1994 she moved to Stanley, N.D. She enjoyed music and played the accordion in a family orchestra. Later she played many more years accompanied by her husband. They played at senior centers and nursing homes. She was a people person and loved visiting with everyone. She will be remembered by many for her sense of humor and friendly personality. She is survived by a daughter, Caren Severson of Stanley, N.D.; two sisters, Sadie of Littlefork and Elvie of Elk River; two grandsons, Dean of Fargo, N.D. and Byton of Wichita, Kan. Memorial services will be held today, Wednesday, at 2 p.m. at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Cloquet. Interment will be in Maple Grove Cemetery, Cloquet. Donald E. Strommer 1926 - 1999, 72, Iowa City, Iowa, died Sunday, April 18, 1999, of heart failure in his home. He was born on Aug. 2, 1926, in Viborg, S.D. to Eric E. and Nathalia E. Nielsen Strommer. He graduated from Isle High School in 1944. He received his B.S. from St. Cloud State University in 1950 and his Masters of Education from the University of Wisconsin, Superior, Wis., in 1960. He was united in marriage to Jerine L. Thomas on Aug. 29, 1948, in Isle. He was a teacher and coach in the Superior, Wis., Public Schools from 1950 to 1963, and a counselor and principal at Cloquet Public Schools from 1963 to 1970. Moving to Iowa City, Iowa, in 1970, he was an educational consultant at National Computer Systems (then Westinghouse Learning Corporation) until his retirement in 1989. He then began his own educational consulting company, working with schools across the country for 10 years. He served in the United States Army Air Corps during WWII in Germany from 1945 to 1946. He was a member of St. Mark’s United Methodist Church, St. Mark’s United Methodist Men, Iowa City American Legion Post 17, Johnson County Veterans Commission and Fairview Golf Course. He was preceded in death by his parents; his foster parents, George and Stella Munson; and two brothers, Erling and Glenn. He is survived by his wife, Jerine; three sons, Thomas Strommer and friend Deborah Best of Bemidji, Scott Strommer and friend Eilene Johnson of Toledo, Iowa and Mark (Lisa) Strommer of Iowa City, Iowa; five daughters, Karla (Chance) Bartholomew, Vicki (Joe) Lalla, Julie (Rod) Sparks and Becki (John) Sammons, all of Iowa City, Iowa and Lori (Tom) Pace of West Liberty; one sister, Marjorie (Harold) Angle of Sioux Falls, S.D.; two brothers, Palmer (Millie) Strommer of Baker City, Ore. and Clifford (Leona) Strommer of Surprise, Ariz.; one sister-in-law, Bess Strommer of Puyallup, Wash.; 15 grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. Funeral services will be held on Thursday at 11:30 a.m. at St. Mark’s United Methodist Church. Rev. Harlan Gillesple will officiate. Burial will be in Memory Gardens Cemetery with Military Rites provided by the Coralville American Legion Post 721 and assisted by local military organizations. Friends may call today, Wednesday, from 3-8 p.m. at the George L. Gay Funeral Home and Crematorium. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to The Donald Strommer Memorial Fund. Duane F. Rubesh, 57, Barnum, died April 19, 1999. He was formerly employed with Conwed Corporation in Cloquet and as a security guard with GSSC in Duluth. He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Irene. He is survived by a son, Eric D. (Cassandra) Slad of Brainerd; one grandson; sister, Eva (Wendell) Tellinghuisen of Carlton; brother, Roy Rubesh of Barnum; five nieces and nephews; and other relatives and friends. A private service was held. Arrangements by Cremation Society of Minnesota.

Betty E. Anderson, 75, Richfield, died April 19, 1999. She was dearly loved by her children, and she was a wonderful mother, grandmother and friend. She was a beautiful inspiration and courageous woman who will be dearly missed. She was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, Sheldon and one son, Butch. She is survived by her children, Sherie (David) Samborski, Patty Blunt, Galen Anderson, Sheldon Anderson, Julie (David) Wasmuth and Mary (Paul) Setter; 16 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren and one on the way; brother, Harvey Johnson; and sisters Edna Samuelson and Doris Raden. A memorial service was held at 2 p.m. on Thursday at Bloomington Congregation of Jehovah’s Witnesses, Bloomington.

Elizabeth A. Saarnio 1920 - 1999, 78, Edina, formerly of Duluth, passed away April 22, 1999, after a courageous battle with cancer. She was born on April 24, 1920, in Cloquet. She graduated from Cloquet High School and the College of St. Scholastica. She worked for many years as a medical technologist. She was preceded in death by her husband, Edwin Saarnio and sister, Mary Rosenquist. She is survived by daughters, Mary (Dean) Wiley of Edina and Sue (William Clements) Saarnio of Falls Church, Va.; son, Robert of Salem, Mass.; grandchildren, Christopher, Melissa and Megan Wiley and Kathleen Clements; brother, Robert (Beverly) Hudberg of Saginaw, Mich.; brother-in-law, Kevin Rosenquist of Duluth; nieces; nephews and a special friend, Garlick of Bloomington. Memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. today, Saturday, at Minnesota Masonic Home Chapel, Bloomington. Gathering one hour prior to the service. Private interment will be held in Park Hill Cemetery, Duluth. Memorials preferred to the American Society. Arrangements by Minnesota Masonic Home Chapel, Bloomington.

Raymond “Ray” Stanley Froberg, Sr. 1923 - 1999, 75, Waconia, died April 22, 1999, in St. Louis Park. He was born on Dec. 4, 1923 in Carlton. He was a longtime former employee with Minneapolis Moline. He retired as an engineer from Fabri-Tek/National Connector. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Corp in WWII as a corporal. He was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Suzy Severson. He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Froberg; son, Raymond (Laurie) Froberg, Jr.; daughters, Kathy (Doug) Stovern, Sandy (Karl) Brogren and Mary (Dr. Fred) Severson; grandchildren, Derek (Tami) and Sarah Stovern, Kirk and Kirsten Brogren, Karen and Ellie Severson, Kara, Larissa and Madison Froberg and other family members. Visitation will be held from 4-7 p.m. on Sunday at Huber Funeral Home in Excelsior and will continue from 10 a.m. to the 11 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial on Monday at St. Therese Catholic Church in Deephaven. Robert Elliott Lynds 1919 - 1999, Robert Elliott Lynds passed away April 3, 1999 after suffering a heart attack on April 1. Mr. Lynds was born Nov 13, 1919 in Los Angeles, Calif. after his parents moved from Cloquet in 1918. He was the grandson of Joseph Edward Lynds and the great grandson of George Stearns Shaw, for whom the Shaw Memorial Building was named. At the time of his death, Shaw was the president of the Cloquet Lumber Company. Because he had such a love of family history he was a member of the Carlton County Historical Society for many years. He lived his whole life in the Los Angeles area, mostly in Pacific Palisades and moved to Valencia in 1994. He worked for American President Lines, then went into the travel business and owned American International Travel Services. He was a member of the Jonathan Club, Travelers Century Club, American Legion Service Post 546, and former Board Member of the Santa Clarita Valley Historical Society. He is survived by his loving wife of 52 years, Patricia Gibbs; three sons Robert D. (Chris) of Paso Robles, Calif.; William W. (Susan) of Atlanta, Ga.; and Richard J. (Carol) of Saugus, Calif.; five grandchildren; a brother, Edward S, Jr. and a sister, Elizabeth (Jim) McNabb. Mr. Lynds was a wonderful husband, father and grandfather and will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

Marjorie T. (Betzler) Geving 1935 - 1999, 82, Duluth, died Friday, April 16, 1999, in her home. She was born in 1935 in Two Harbors where she attended the Duluth Business University. She worked for Employer Insurance Company, Oreck’s Department Store and was co-operator with her husband of the Court House Lunch for 28 years, retiring in 1978. She was a past member of the Daughters of the Nile, Lotus Temple 7, past matron of Harriet Chapter 251, Order of the Eastern Star, Zenith Chapter 25, Order of the Eastern Star, pasts worthy high priestess of Mizpah Shrine 1, Order of the White Shrine of Jerusalem and was active with her husband, Bert, in all of his Shrine projects. She was preceded in death by two stepdaughters, Janice and Judy. She is survived by her husband, Wilbert “Bert;” five sons, Paul A. Mork of Plymouth, David S. Mork of Phoenix, Ariz., Gary A. Geving of San Francisco, Calif., James T. Geving of Crystal and Mark E. Geving of Duluth; one stepson, John Geving of Esko; one stepdaughter, Donna Erickson of Caselberry, Fla.; 40 grandchildren and 40 great-grandchildren. Visitation was held from 4-7 p.m. on Monday at Dougherty Funeral Home and from 1 p.m. until the 2 p.m. service on Tuesday at United Baptist Christian Church. The interment will be in Forest Hill Cemetery. Memorials be made to Hospice Duluth, C/O St. Luke’s Hospital, would be appreciated.

Clarence Schubitzke 1913 - 1999, 85, Mahtowa, died Wednesday, April 21, 1999, in St. Mary’s Medical Center in Duluth. He was born on Dec. 14, 1913, in Duluth to Frank and Pauline (Czkalski) Schubitzke. He grew up and attended school in Duluth. He married Arlene Wedan on Sept. 26, 1938, in Duluth. He worked at the Clover Bloom Dairy in Duluth, which he later owned and operated. He worked for three years on the construction of the Alaskan Highway and for several years had his own landscaping business. He was a truck driver for Jeno’s for more than 30 years. In the mid-60s, he moved to Esko where he bought a farm and raised beef cattle and rode horses. He then moved to Carlton and in 1971, he worked at Schubitzke’s Sand and Gravel in Saginaw. He was a member of the Mahtowa Covenant Church. He was preceded in death by three children, Michael, Dianne and Lawrence; three brothers, Paul, Edward and Lawrence; one granddaughter, Jodi Schubitzke and one great-granddaughter, Megan Schmidt. He is survived by his wife, Arlene; son, James (Janet) Schubitzke of Saginaw; daughters, Sharon Schubitzke of Duluth and Merijean Schubitzke of Glide, Ore.; brothers, Frank (Phyllis) Schubitzke Jr. of Saginaw and Bernard (Donna) Schubitzke of Duluth; sister, Mary Sinjem of Souix Falls, S.D.; 11 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. Visitation will be held from 5-7 p.m. on Sunday in Northland Funeral Home in Mahtowa and will continue from 1 p.m. until the 2 p.m. service on Monday in Mahtowa Covenant Church. Mark William Ellefson 1955 - 1999, 43, Duluth, died Tuesday, April 20, 1999, in his home of natural causes. He was born on Sept. 12, 1955, in Duluth to Eugene and Madge Zacher Ellefson. He grew up in Hermantown and lived there for many years. He attended Hermantown schools. He had served in the U.S. Navy as a machinist during the Vietnam War. Following the service he worked as a machinist. He was a member of the Council Bluffs in Iowa and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post. He loved hunting and fishing on his pontoon boat. He is survived by his three children, Jessica and John Ellefson of Glencoe and Tami Ellefson of Superior, Wis.; parents, Madge and Eugene Ellefson of Omaha, Neb.; two brothers, J. Bruce Ellefson and David (Sherri) Ellefson of Omaha, Neb.; two sisters, Becky (Roger) Pehl of Saginaw and Jane Peters of Omaha, Neb; and several nieces and nephews. Hazel Pino 1906 - 1999, 92, Prairie Lake, died Thursday, April 22, 1999, in Villa Vista Nursing Home, Cromwell. She was born on May 17, 1906, in Grantsburg, Wis. Her family moved to Stillwater when she was a young girl. She married Fred Pino on June 24, 1931, in Stillwater. In 1945, she and her husband moved to Prairie Lake where they owned and operated Pino’s Resort for 40 years, retiring in 1985. In 1991, Hazel moved to Villa Vista Nursing Home. She was a member of the Cromwell United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women. She was preceded in death by her husband, Fred; one brother, Robert Thompson and one sister, Edith Kleis. She is survived by one daughter, Roberta (Thomas) Zauher of Duluth; one brother, Evan Thompson of Floodwood; one sister, Ethel Thorne of St. Paul; three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Visitation was held from 10 a.m. until the 10:30 a.m. service on Monday in Cromwell United Methodist Church, Cromwell. Pastor Roy Vanderwerf officiated. Burial will be in Lakeview Cemetery, Wright. Virgil E. Sjodahl 1921 - 1999, 77, Wright, died Sunday, April 25, 1999, at the Villa Vista Nursing Home, Cromwell. He was born on Sept. 12, 1921, in Sandstone to William and Jennie (Olson) Sjodahl. He married Ruth Peterson on June 10, 1944, in Hinckley. Following their marriage, Virgil and Ruth farmed in the Sandstone area for many years. Virgil later went to work with the Minnesota Highway Department where he worked until his retirement in 1986. He was a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Wright and a former member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Sandstone. He was also a member of the Sandstone Masonic Lodge. He enjoyed gardening, hunting, fishing, spending time outdoors and spending the winter months at their home in Alamo, Texas. He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Clarence and Harley. He is survived by his wife, Ruth; two brothers, Luverne (Helen) of Isle and Wesley (Elsie) of Sandstone; and many nieces and nephews. Visitation will be held today, Wednesday, one hour prior to the 1 p.m. memorial service in Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Wright. The Rev. Matt Saarem will officiate. Floyd Harold Clark 1917 - 1999, 81, Cloquet, died Saturday, April 24, 1999, at the Cloquet Community Memorial Hospital in Cloquet. He was born on Nov. 16, 1917, in Cogswell, N.D., to Charles and Edla (Hanhela) Clark. He was raised in the Menahga area and later moved to Cloquet. He was a WWII Navy Veteran. He founded, owned and operated Clark Heating in Cloquet until his retirement in 1982. He was a member of the American Legion Post 262, the VFW Post 3979, the Eagles Aerie 1162, the Moose Lodge and the Carlton County Historical Society, all of Cloquet. In Menahga he was a volunteer bus driver for senior citizens and a driver for Meals-on-Wheels. He was a former board member of the Senior Citizens Club, the Menahga City Council and the Historical Society. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Bessie; brothers, Kenneth and Arnold Hilton and a grandson, Pat Tollerud. He is survived by his four children, Judy (Robert) Tollerud, Daryl (Carol) Clark and Allan Clark, all of Cloquet and Kathy Arbour of Apple Valley; a very special friend, Millie Skarr of Menahga; two sisters, Adeline (Mike) Leritz of Cloquet and Delores Bohren of Esko; two brothers, Chester and Virgil Hilton of Cloquet; eight grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. Visitation was held on Monday from 6-8 p.m. at Nelson Funeral Care and continued on Tuesday from 12 Noon until the 1 p.m. funeral service at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Cloquet. Rev. David Ziemer officiated. Pallbearers were Roy Kilpela, Jim Merrill, Less Bakka, Clarence Olson, Vern Johnson, Wally Ahlf, Ronald Hall and William Schmitz. Warren Carl Johnson 1920 - 1999, 78, Auburn, Wash., died April 25, 1999, at his home in Auburn, Wash. He was born on Dec. 11, 1920, in Cloquet to the late Wilhelm and Anna (Hultberg) Johanson. He grew up in Cloquet and graduated from Cloquet High School. The family changed their name from Johanson to Johnson when emigrating to the U.S., then some changed back. He served the U.S. Air Force for 21 years, retiring in 1961. After he retired from the Air Force he worked for Stroh’s Brewery, retiring in 1986. He was a member of the American Legion, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Teamster’s Union and A.A.R.P. He is survived by two brothers, Wallace and Donald Johnson, both of Cloquet; one sister, Alvina Sather of Lancaster, Pa., and many other loving family members. Memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. today, Saturday, at Yahn and Son Funeral Home, Auburn, Wash. Memorials may be sent to Boystown, Boystown, Neb. Marlys Marie Tate 1930 - 1999, 68, Cloquet, passed away April 28, 1999, in the Cloquet Community Memorial Hospital and Convalescent Nursing Care Section. She was born on Oct. 8, 1930, in Artesian, S.D., to Chester and Ruth (Pont) Grindle. She attended Artesian, McGregor and Carlton Schools. Marlys and Dennis Tate were married in December of 1948. This year would have been their 51st wedding anniversary. They moved to Cloquet in 1939, where she worked in the Forestry Center as a cook, retiring in 1997, with over 20 years of service. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dennis, in 1997; and her parents, Chester and Ruth Grindle. She is survived by her sons, Gaylon (Roberta) of Sawyer, Glen (Debbie) of Becker and Lyle (Cheryl) of Carlton; a daughter, Debra (Jerry) Peterson of Mahtowa; a brother, Wayne (Evelyn) Grindle of Creston, B.C.; sisters, Merla Neumann of Spring Park, Shirley Vrdoljak of Cloquet, Joyce (Melvin) Seppala of Sand Point, Idaho, and Ramona (Ralph) Fall of Cloquet; seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Visitation will be held today, Saturday, from 10 a.m. until the 11 a.m. memorial service in Barr Brothers Funeral Home, Cloquet. Pastor Phil Swensson will officiate. Dr. David Marshal Jones, D.D.S. 1954 - 1999, 44, Carlton, died Friday, April 23, 1999, near Custer, S.D., as a result of a hunting accident. He was born on May 4, 1954, in Minneapolis, to Bernard and Mary Elizabeth (Marshall) Jones. He lived in the Twin Cities area until 1966 when the family moved to Duluth. He attended East High School, graduating in 1972. He attended the University of Minnesota-Duluth for three years and then the University of Minnesota School of Dentistry. He married Mary Roed on July 31, 1976, in Duluth. He graduated in 1979 and moved his family to Cloquet where he practiced dentistry for the past 20 years. He was an avid fly fisherman, hunter, writer and reader. He loved spending time with his family at the cabin in Grand Rapids and attending his children’s activities. He was a member of St. Francis Catholic Church in Carlton, the American Dental Association and the Noper Foundation. He is survived by his wife, Mary, of 22 years; his children, Eric, Dan and Annika, all of Carlton; his parents, Bernard and Mary Elizabeth Jones of Duluth; four sisters, Nancy (A. Daniel) Rydland of Chanhassen, Susan (Bruce) Henke of Duluth, Laurie (Gary) Anderson of St. Paul and Catherine (Terry) Smith of Mableton, Ga.; nieces; nephews; aunts; uncles; cousins and many dear close friends. Visitation was held from 5-8 p.m. on Monday with a 7:30 p.m. prayer service in Northland Funeral Home, Cloquet. Visitation continued from 3 p.m. until the 4 p.m. service on Tuesday in Queen of Peace Catholic Church, Cloquet. Father John O’Donnell officiated. Lester T. Connor 1907 - 1999, 92, passed away April 26, 1999, in his daughters home in Cloquet. He was born in Millbank, S.D., on Feb. 7, 1907, to William and Emma (Tillman) Connor. He married Mae Letraille on Aug. 6, 1934, in Leroy, N.D. He was employed as a carpenter and was very knowledgeable in many forms of construction. He was the fire chief in Crystal, N.D., for several years. He played amateur baseball. His interest for the game continued throughout his life. Other hobbies included, being a very patient fisherman, a smooth dancer and a swinging harmonica player. He moved to Chippewa Falls, Wis., in 1953, where he raised a family of 10 children. His later years were spent with family members, mostly his daughter, Myrna. He was a member of Queen of Peace Catholic Church, Cloquet. He was preceded in death by a son, William, in 1987 and his wife, Mae, in 1992. He is survived by four sons, Lester Jr. (Elizabeth), John, Myron (Joanne) and Jim (Jeanne); five daughters, Myrna (Bob) Botz, Beverly (Jim) Bachlor, Jeanette, Theresa (John) Watkins and Sandra (Ed) Barnes; 39 grandchildren; 50 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren. Visitation was held from 5-8 p.m. on Thursday with prayers at 7 p.m. in Barr Brothers Funeral Home. Mass of Christian burial was held at 2 p.m. on Friday in Queen of Peace Catholic Church, Cloquet. The Rev. Father Kenton Sailstad officiated. Organist was Mary Watson. Soloists were Regina Roemhildt and Denise Bennett. Pallbearers were David Smith, Joshua Connor, Mark Connor, Gary Bachlor, Glen Bachlor and Tim Connor. Interment will be in Maple Grove Cemetery, Cloquet.
