Irene E. Grove
Irene E. Grove, age 75, of Battle Lake died Tuesday, August 6, 2002 at the Battle Lake Good Samaritan Center in Battle Lake. She was born October 17, 1926 in Nidaros Township, rural Clitherall, the daughter of Thorfin S. and Bessie L. (Underhill) Sandahl. She was baptized and confirmed in the Nidaros Lutheran Church of rural Clitherall. She graduated from the Henning High School in 1945 and attended one year at the Alexandria Technical School for Accounting. On January 4, 1946, she married Iver Listrom in Vining. Iver passed away on February 16, 1957. Irene married Harold Grove on July 24, 1971 in Alexandria. Harold passed away on October 28, 1995. She worked for two years with Land-O-Lakes, then two years for Sears Roebuck Co. and then two and one-half years with Shirley’s Real Estate all of Alexandria. She attended the Christian and Missionary Alliance church and was active with the Ladies Aid Group. She is survived by one daughter, Connie Johnson of Columbia, SC; two sons, Allen (Edna) Listrom of Columbia, SC and Ken (Cyndy) Listrom of Garfield; one step-son, Bob (Kathy) Grove of Willmar; her mother, Bessie Gearhart of Battle Lake; Grandchildren, Sandra (Joe), Allen Jr. (Carrie), Jennifer, Amanda (Case), Ana, Elizabeth, Kristie, Mary Beth, Ashley, Jacob and Jonathon; two step-grandchildren, Robb and Kelly; three sisters, Lillian (John) Groom of Grangeville, ID, Marian (Wilton) Godel and Elaine (Carl) Biederman both of Battle Lake; and two brothers, Rev. Oliver (Ann) Sandahl of Virginia and Gene (Pat) Sandahl of Clitherall. She was preceded in death by her father, Thorfin; and by her husbands, Iver and Harold.

Irene Donaldson
Irene Donaldson, 96, of Battle Lake died Monday, August 5, 2002 at the Otter Tail Nursing Home. She was born October 23, 1905 in Manning, IA to Heinrick and Christine (Sievers) Heesch. In 1911 she moved with her family to Pipestone County, MN where they farmed. She graduated from Pipestone High School in 1922 and then taught country school for several years. She married Kenneth Reese in 1925. He was killed in an accident in 1937. She married Sextus Donaldson on May 30, 1940. The resided in Sioux Falls, SD until 1950 when they moved to Battle Lake and worked as partners in Rokmar Resort. Later they were employed at Twins Grocery until their retirement. Mr. Donaldson passed away in 1983. She lived at Summit Village in Battle Lake until November of 1994 at which time declining health required her to move to the Otter Tail Nursing Home where she passed away. She was a member of Eastern Star and enjoyed fishing. She is survived by several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by both husbands; three sisters, Anna Firck, Marie Schaap and Emma Schrum and four brothers, John, Herman, William and Emil Heesch.

Olive Jeannette Slotsve
Olive Jeannette Slotsve, 97, of Ashby died Friday, August 9, 2002 at the Pelican Lake Health Care Center. She was born August 6, 1905 in Dalton to John H "Jack" and MaryAnn Elizabeth "Mayme" (Warnke) Gregory. She attended School District 8 in Dalton. She was confirmed November 20, 1920 at the St. Olaf Lutheran Church which was one of the first churches to use the English language instead of Norwegian. Upon completing the eighth grade and with the encouragement of her teacher, she boarded out in Fergus Falls to attend Washington High School for the next four years, graduating in 1924. She stayed for a fifth year in Fergus to attend the Normal Training Classes, becoming the second class to graduate as teachers in 1925. There were 20 students in the class. Her first school was District 70 in Grant County where she earned $85.00 a month for seven months of school. She taught in rural schools throughout the area for the next few years. Through summer school and continuing education classes she received a degree from Moorhead Teachers College. She signed a teaching contract with the Elbow Lake System in 1957 as a fourth grade teacher. She retired from Elbow Lake in 1970. On November 21, 1941 she married Lawrence "Polly" Slotsve of Ashby at the parsonage in Dalton with Rev. Joe Melby officiating. They spent their first year of marriage in Texas. Upon their return to Ashby a new home was eventually built by Polly who was a carpenter. She lived in the home until entering Pelican Lake Health Care Center in 1999. Mr. Slotsve died August 31, 1987. She had a deep, quiet faith and was active in her church in Ashby, now called Peace Lutheran. After retirement, she volunteered many hours with RSVP program at the Pelican Lake Health Care Center. She enjoyed reading, knitting and gardening until her health declined. She is survived by two nieces, Pamela Gregory Johnson and Janice (Gary) Mickelson both of Fergus Falls; five nephews, Myron (Norma) Slotsve of Lakeville, Henry (Ardis) Slotsve of St. Paul, Keith Gregory of Fergus Falls, Mark Koefod of Ashby and Darrell (Eunice) Koefod of San Jose, CA. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lawrence and a brother, George Gregory.

Edna Whitney
Edna Whitney, age 91, of Fergus Falls died Saturday, August 10, 2002 at the Pioneer Retirement Community in Fergus Falls. She was born October 31, 1910 to Fred and Louise (Nordman) Hanneman in Erhards Grove Township, MN and moved to Carlisle Township where she grew up and attended school. She was baptized and confirmed at Zion Lutheran Church where she was also a member. She married Fred Schmidt and farmed in different areas moving to Fergus Falls in 1952. She worked at the State Hospital for twenty-two years and also at the Pioneer Home for several years before retiring in 1980. Some years later she married Dale Whitney. In her spare time, she enjoyed knitting and needle work. She is survived by her husband, Dale Whitney; three children, Clarence of Buse Township, Delores Runningen of Ashby, and Walter of rural Dalton; a half brother, Fred Jr. Of Dallas, OR; a half sister, Donna of Portland, OR; many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; and many friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Engvald and Alvin (Swede) Hanneman; and a step-mother, Ruth Hanneman. Services: A private Graveside Service is planned at a later date

Jeffrey A. Dahlen
Jeffrey A. Dahlen, 28, of Ashby died Monday, August 19, 2002 at the family farm in Lund Township, rural Evansville. He was born February 8, 1974 in Red Wing, MN to Raymond and Carol (Loken) Dahlen. He was baptized at United Lutheran Church in Red Wing. He grew up in Ashby where he was confirmed at Trinity Lutheran Church and attended Ashby Public School graduating in 1992. He graduated from St. Cloud State University in 1997 with a teaching degree in history. After substitute teaching for a period of time, he secured a position in his hometown of Ashby. While teaching in Ashby, he pursued his Special Education Degree which he completed in 2001. At the present time he was teaching Special Education in Ashby as well as coaching varsity golf, Jr. High football and basketball. He loved teaching and coaching in Ashby. The staff and students were near and dear to his heart. He was an avid hunter, golfer and all-around sports fan. He had a passion for history which led him to travel in the United States and abroad. He was very close to his family. His easy-going manner, contagious laugh and listening ear will be fondly remembered and sadly missed. He is survived by his parents, Raymond and Carol Dahlen; sister, Kristin (Christopher) Roley; brother, Jason (Jody) Dahlen all of Ashby; brother, Michael of St. Cloud; nieces, Britney Dahlen, Meghann Roley and Halle Dahlen; nephews, Joshua Dahlen, Ethan Roley and Aaron Dahlen. He was preceded in death by his maternal and paternal grandparents; aunts and uncles; cousins and a very special cousin and friend, Kevin Olson.

Frank Butler
Frank Butler, 79, of Battle Lake died Wednesday, August 21, 2002 at MeritCare Hospital in Fargo, ND. He was born November 16, 1922 in Rembrandt, Iowa to William and Hazel (Hutchinson) Butler. He was raised by John and Nellie O’Toole in Olivia, MN. On July 27, 1942 he married Helen Scherweit in the Lutheran parsonage at Menomonie, WI. During WWII he served with the U.S. Army for three years in Europe beginning with the Normandy Invasion. Following his military service they lived in Oriska, Binford, Berlin, Kathryn and Edgeley, ND before moving to Battle Lake in 1971. He worked for the Northern Pacific Railroad which became the Burlington Northern Railroad. He retired in 1982 and spent winters in Mesa, AZ and summers at their Silver Lake home by Battle Lake. Mrs. Butler died August 24, 2000. He was a member of Trefoldighed Lutheran Church, VFW and the American Legion where he was recognized for over 50 years of continuous service with the Legion. He enjoyed woodworking, hunting, fishing and loved crossword puzzles. He truly enjoyed life, his family and especially his grandchildren. He is survived by two daughters, Carol (Paul) Fredrickson of Ottertail and Colleen (Dean) Nelson of Battle Lake; three sons, Richard (Pam) Butler of Laramie, WY, Ronald (Sandy) Butler of Bemidji and Danny (Linda) Butler of Fargo, ND; 13 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; sister, Val Joy of Rochester; sisters-in-law, Dorothy Hoffmann and Dorothy Scherweit both of Casselton, ND and Bernice (Bud) Kipp of Edgeley, ND; foster brother, Leo O’Toole of Mesa, AZ; nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. Doris A. Chell
Doris A. Chell, 78, of Fergus Falls died Thursday, August 22, 2002 at the Pioneer Retirement Community. She was born January 2, 1924 on a farm six miles north of Breckenridge, to William and Amelia (Buth) Bergman. She was baptized at Christ Lutheran Church in Mitchell Township of Wilkin County and was confirmed at Trinity Lutheran Church in Fergus Falls. In 1929 she moved to a farm in Mitchell Township and attended School District 20 there. In 1934 she moved to Sunnyside Township on the Fencemaker farm where she attended Everdell School for one year and then Sunnyside School, District 23. In 1937 she moved south of Fergus Falls and graduated from the Fergus Falls High School in 1941. She then worked in the Fergus area. On September 30, 1945 she married Lyle Chell at Trinity Lutheran Church. They lived in Fergus Falls until 1962 when they moved to a farm near Dalton. In 1975 she purchased Gramp’s Café in Dalton which she operated for 20 years. In 1996 she retired and moved to Fergus Falls. She has been a resident of Riverview Apartments since 1999. Mr. Chell died August 4, 1966. She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church for most of her life where she was active in Circle, LWML and Bible study. She was also a member of the American Legion Auxiliary and enjoyed reading and gardening. She is survived by three daughters, Betty Heinen of Minneapolis, Diane (Willard) Tverberg of Virginia, MN and Dorene (Kenneth) Thomas of Maple Grove, MN; two sons, Orlyn (Patti) Chell of Fairbault, MN and Neil (Beth) Chell of Farmington, MN; 18 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren and a sister-in-law, Erma Bergman of Pelican Rapids. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Lyle; three brothers, Wilfred, Wilmer and Norman and a sister, Florence Albertson.

Evelyn Sollie, age 75, of Dalton died Thursday, August 22nd [2002] at the Broen Memorial Home in Fergus Falls. A graveside service will be held Tuesday, August 27th at 10 a.m. at Kvam Lutheran Cemetery, rural Dalton, with Rev. David Skordahl officiating. P.D. Ward
P.D. Ward, 94, of Fergus Falls died Sunday, August 25, 2002 at the Pioneer Retirement Community. He was born December 23, 1907 in Leon, Iowa to Joseph and Elizabeth (Sullivan) Ward. He grew up in Revillo, SD where he graduated from high school. On June 28, 1938 he married Marie Catherine Meyer at Annunciation Catholic Church in Revilo. From 1938 to 1968 he operated a Creamery and Locker plant in Revillo. He was very civic orientated serving on the Revillo School Board for over 20 years. He was also very active in the church where he served in various capacities. He then moved to Storm Lake, Iowa where he worked for Montgomery Ward in refrigeration and small appliances retiring in 1978. While in Storm Lake he helped establish a work place for the disabled. In 1993 he and his wife and son, Mark, moved to Fergus Falls. He has been a resident of the Pioneer Retirement Community for the past year. He was a member of Our Lady of Victory Catholic Church. He enjoyed hunting pheasants and loved horses and dogs. As a young man he played town team baseball. He was loved by his family and will always be remembered for his great sense of humor and his Irish wit. He is survived by his wife, Marie of Fergus Falls; four sons, Joe (JoAnn) Ward of Newell, SD, Pat (Susan) Ward of Fergus Falls, Michael (Angela) Ward of Littleton, MA and Mark Ward of Fergus Falls; four daughters, Margaret Mary (George) Jurgens of Fergus Falls, Joann (Mark) Krauseneck of Grand Forks, ND, Susan (Willy) Sloan of Quasqueton, IA and Angela (Joe) Bindner of Cedar Rapids, IA; a cousin, Forrest Ward of Marietta, MN; 25 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Catherine and a great-grandson, Mackenzie Knutson.

Marette Klevgard
Marette Klevgard, 77, of Fergus Falls died Monday, August 26, 2002 at Lake Region Hospital. She was born July 9, 1925 near Halma, MN the daughter of Emil and Martha (Wilkens) Williamson. She grew up in the Halma and Lockhart areas attending schools there and graduating from the Ada High School in 1943. She attended the Swedish Hospital- School of Nursing in Minneapolis from 1943 to 1946 graduating with an R.N. Degree. She trained and served as a cadet nurse during WWII. She then worked at several hospitals for many years including the Swedish Hospital and Minneapolis General Hospital in Minneapolis, Bethesda Hospital and Sanitorium in Crookston, Ada Hospital in Ada, Veterans Hospital and St. Luke’s Hospital in Fargo, ND, the Fargo Clinic and Lake Region Hospital in Fergus Falls. She also was a private duty nurse for Minnesota Senator Norman Larson’s mother in Ada. Her other education included one year at Lutheran Bible Institute in Minneapolis and classes at Moorhead State College and the Fergus Falls Community College. In the 1970's she taught Health Occupations at the Fergus Falls Senior High School. She loved to play piano and was self-taught in playing after a few lessons from Erling Rolfsrud who was a teacher in Lockhart and later became an acclaimed author. On June 26, 1954 she married Millard Klevgaard at First English Lutheran Church in Lockhart. They lived in Moorhead before moving to Fergus Falls in 1965. Their son, Dana, was born May 24, 1961 and lives in Fergus Falls. Two more sons and two daughters died when born. Mr. Klevgaard died April 4, 1999. She is survived by her son, Dana of Fergus Falls; a sister, Carol (William) Anderson of Grand Forks, ND and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Millard; four babies; a brother, Marvin; nephew, Randy and stepfather, Oliver Gilbertson.

Eva Lystad, age 100, of Fergus Falls died Tuesday, September 10, 2002 at the Broen Memorial Home in Fergus Falls. She was born December 13, 1901 in Fergus Falls the daughter of John and Bertha (Evanson) Aagren. She was baptized and confirmed at Hedemarken Lutheran Church. She attended school in Fergus Falls and also in North Dakota where she lived with her family for many years. On December 16, 1953, she married Henry Lystad at the Lutheran Parsonage in Rothsay. After marriage, they lived on a farm near Carlisle. Henry passed away on January 28, 1977. She enjoyed knitting and crocheting. She was a member of Hedemarken Lutheran Church and the Ladies Aid and was also a member of the Sons of Norway. She is survived by her son, Wallace (Annette) Aagren of Fergus Falls; two grandchildren, Thomas and Brent; and several nephews and nieces. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; three brothers, Herb, Juel, and Lester; and two sisters, Mabel and Cora. Theoline R. Holo, age 81, of rural Battle Lake died Tuesday at the Pelican Lake Health Care Center in Ashby. She was born July 25, 1921 in St. Olaf Township near Dalton to Theodore and Emma (Pederson) Risbrudt where she grew up and attended School District #2. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Olaf Lutheran Church. On November 2, 1950, she married Herbert M. Holo in the Lutheran Parsonage in Dalton. After marriage, they lived in Battle Lake until 1952 when they moved to the Risbrudt Family Farm where they Dairy Farmed. She was a member of Bethel Lutheran Church, active with Ladies Aid and taught Sunday School for many years. She enjoyed farming, gardening and flowers, and especially her grandchildren. On Tuesday, September 10, 2002, Theoline passed away at the Pelican Lake Health Care Center in Ashby at the age of 81 years. She is survived by her husband, Herbert; two sons, Wayne (Bethe) Holo and Dale (Sandy) Holo both of Dalton; two grandchildren, Dane and Emma Holo; one sister, Irene Thompson of Ashby; and a brother-in-law, Herbert Romanek of Floodwood. She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Truman and Alton; and five sisters, Myrtle Fick, Grace Fellet, Evelyn Anderson, Lorraine Romanek, and LaVonne Nelson. Virginia Meagher, age 91, of Fargo, ND died Wednesday, September 11, 2002, at Sunnyside Care Center in Lake Park, MN. She was born June 9, 1911 in Bemidji, MN and raised in Grafton, ND. She married Duncan Meagher on June 7, 1936 and they made their home in Park River, ND. In their retirement years they spent winters in Mesa, AZ and summers at their lake home in Park Rapids, MN. Duncan preceded her in death in 1985. She is survived by two daughters, Susan (Jay) Myster of Fergus Falls, MN, and Nancy (Larry) Budish of Fargo, ND; and five grandchildren, Shannon (Chad) Schaefer of Rogers, MN, Bradley (Kim) Budish of Muenster, TX, Stephanie Budish of Allen, TX, Douglas Myster of Flagstaff, AZ, and Robert Myster of Fergus Falls, MN. Alice Nina Holo
Alice Nina Holo, age 81, of Battle Lake died Sunday, September 15, 2002 at the Battle Lake Good Samaritan Center in Battle Lake. Alice was born on February 1, 1921 in Austad Township, rural Fergus Falls, Minnesota the daughter of Ludvig and Gustava (Norvik) Mekalson. She was baptized and confirmed in the Grue Lutheran Church, rural Ashby and graduated from the Battle Lake High School in 1939. Alice married Gordon Holo on December 19, 1940 in the Lutheran Parsonage in Dalton, Minnesota. After their marriage they lived in the Battle Lake area until moving to their present farm south of Battle Lake in 1948. She was a homemaker who enjoyed baking, entertaining family and friends and especially enjoyed her grandchildren. Alice was a member of the First Lutheran Church and the American Legion Auxillary both of Battle Lake. Alice is survived by her husband, Gordon; one daughter, Sandra (Don) Schatschneider of Battle Lake; one son, Gerald (Jeri Wilmore) Holo of Battle Lake; four grandchildren, Jennifer (Jason Keeping) Scatschneider of Fargo, N.D., Chad Holo of Omaha, Neb., Jessica and Sarah Holo of Fargo, N.D.; one sister, Hazel Dyrland of Battle Lake and numerous nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by four sisters, Inga Johnson, Lillie Langren, Sarah Albertson, and Gunda Glemaker; and two brothers, Marvin and Roy Mekalson.

Evelyn A. Waite
Evelyn A. Waite, age 95, of Battle Lake died Monday, September 23, 2002 at Lake Region Hospital in Fergus Falls. She was born March 21, 1907 to Edward F. and Amelia P. (Sutter) Schultz. She was baptized in June of 1998 in Bass Lake. She graduated from Waseca High School in 1923. After graduation, she attended Hamline University where she graduated with a degree in Accounting. She married John D. Waite in Milbank, South Dakota. After marriage, the lived in Breckenridge, Minneapolis, and then Denver, Colorado prior to returning to the Battle Lake area in 1977. She was a school teacher and taught in Stewartville, Wahpeton, and Breckenridge. Following her teaching career, she became a homemaker. She enjoyed gardening, cooking, the Minnesota Vikings, and her family. She is survived by her daughter, Joan Fielding of Battle Lake; a sister, Marian (Harry) Woodfill of Tuscon, AZ; three grandchildren, John Fielding of Fargo, ND, Michael (Kristina) Fielding of Battle Lake, and Evelyn Fielding of Grand Rapids; and four great-grandchildren, Michael C., Dianna, Michael D. and Meaghan. She was preceded in death by her husband, John; one grandson, Christopher Fielding; two brothers, Warren and Harvey Schultz; and one sister, Gertrude Dalbotten.

Elna Hanson Carlson
Elna Hanson Carlson, 78, of Ashby died Wednesday, September 25, 2002 at ELEAH Medical Center in Elbow Lake. She was born February 2, 1924 in Holmes City, MN to Albert and Hilda (Oberg) Hanson. After graduating from the Alexandria High School she worked as a telephone operator, an office manager and secretary for Hagman Dental Lab and then as a machine operator at Toro Manufacturing. On May 14, 1947 she married Roger Carlson in Alexandria. She loved gardening, sewing, embroidering, hunting and fishing and singing with her sisters in duets, trios and quartets for many occasions. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, Peace Lutheran Church and Harjedalen Foreningen. She is survived by her husband, Roger; sister, Avis Luetgers of Alexandria; brother, Albert (Sandy) Hanson of Holmes City and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; sisters, Melba Berg and Harriet Berg; brother, Orville Hanson; nephew, Wesley Hanson and three baby girls who died at birth.

Virgil Olson
Virgil Olson, 80, of Battle Lake died Wednesday, October 2, 2002 at Lake Region Hospital. He was born February 14, 1922 in Erdahl Township to Paul and Dora (Nelson) Olson. He graduated from the Evansville High School and served in the U. S. Army from November 1945 to February 1947. On November 26, 1948 he married Lorraine Nepper. They lived and farmed around Ashby, Idaho, Parkers Prairie and for the last 37 years at Battle Lake. He worked for Mark Sand and Gravel, hauled livestock and moved buildings and grain bins until he retired in 2001. He is survived by his wife, Lorraine; sisters, Elaine (Robert) Anderson of Ashby and Verla Forbes of Charleston, SC; brother, Merl (Dorothy) Olson of Ashby; sister-in-law, Margo Nepper of Fergus Falls; brother-in-law, John (Joyce) Nepper of Superior, WI; nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Eleanor Bothun
Eleanor Bothun, 86, of Dalton died Thursday, October 3, 2002 at her daughter’s home in Brooklyn Park. She was born August 4, 1916 in St. Olaf Township, Otter Tail County, MN to Martin and Mary (Juvland) Benhardus. She was baptized by Pastor Johan F. Melom at Bethel Lutheran Church, rural Dalton, on September 3, 1916. Her sponsers were Wm. O. Wold, Gena Wold, Bernhard Tolleffson and Gena Olson. On June 24, 1937 she was united in marriage to Chester E. Bothun at the Bothun farm two miles southeast of Dalton. They were parents of six daughters. She had a deep faith in God and nothing was more important to her. She was a hard worker who was proficient at baking, cooking, gardening, sewing, canning, freezing, quilting, crocheting and rug weaving. She worked in the fields and at times helped milk cows. She always had a meal or lunch ready for visitors and no one could leave her house without eating. Her husband passed away on January 22, 1981. Left to cherish her memory are six daughters, Corrine (Roger) Tobolt of Brooklyn Park, Eunice (Roger) Digre of Dalton, Mavis (Ken) Bolin of Bell Buckle, TN, Bette (Bill) Cote of Morehead City, NC, Donna (Danny) Boren of Goldsboro, NC and Janet Nelson of Alexandria, whose husband, Tom, passed away December 16, 2001; grandchildren and great-grandchildren, Diane and Duane Tobolt; Chuck (Sandy) Tobolt and Kayla; Jill (Cody) Field; Carl and Andrew Digre; Celeste Cote; Angela (Rob) Moore and Meagan; Joshua (DeAna) Boren; Jacob Boren; Karmen and Kacie Nelson; Kaia Nelson and Ethan; she also considered Tom’s daughters and their families as her grandchildren, Tammy (Matt) Dickey and Dillan, Spencer and Anna, and Julie (Andy) Wigfield, Cody and Chandra. Other survivors include three sisters, Olga O’Donnell, Mildred Holmen and Agnes Benhardus; three brothers, Robert (Laura) Hoff, Joe (Norma) Hoff and Franklin Hoff; brothers and sisters-in-law, Milo Haagenson, Lennie (Mildred) Bothun and Irene Bothun.

Evenelle (Mrs. Arnold) Evavold
Evenelle (Mrs. Arnold) Evavold, 90, of Battle Lake died Sunday, October 6, 2002 at the Battle Lake Good Samaritan Center. She was born July 9, 1912 to Rev. Louis and Emma (Hansen) Hanson in Rochester, MN and delivered by Dr. Charles Mayo. Rev. Hanson was pastor at Bethel Church. Her father became ill so they moved to Alexandria. He died June 30, 1918. Her mother married Klaus Evavold. She and her brother, Lynn Hanson Luthard, moved to Ashby with their mother. There they met Mr. Evavold’s children, Ephraim. Lillie, Minnie and Elvina. She changed her name from Lillian to Evenelle. She attended school at District 67 in Eagle Lake Township and attended her freshmen year at Ashby. She then went to Alexandria where she graduated from high school and one year of teachers training. On July 5, 1936 she married Arnold Evavold. They lived on a farm in Eagle Lake Township. She taught country school for five years at District 104 in Douglas County and then at Districts 81, 114, 93, 67, 72 and 283 in Otter Tail County. In 1968 she graduated from Moorhead State College with a teaching degree and then taught Special Education in McKinley, Lincoln and Adams schools in Fergus Falls. She retired in 1977 at age 65. The couple moved to Summit Village in Battle Lake in 1996. She loved quilting, crafts, looking up family history and her family. She was preceded in death by her parents, her stepdad, sister, Palma at two years of age; new born brother; step-sister, Minnie and brother-in-law, Karold Evavold. She is survived by her husband, Arnold; children, Stanley (Mardelle) Evavold of Superior, WI, Roscoe (Cynthia) Evavold of Bloomington, Maxine (Gary) Olson of Richfield, Allan (June) Evavold of Naperville, Ill, Joyce (David) Deem of Metropolis, Ill and Janelle (David) Hickerson of Champlin; 21 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; a brother, Rev. Lynn (Thelma) Luthard of Paynesville and a sister-in-law, Violet Evavold of Ashby.

Dorothy Ann Wilcox
Dorothy Ann Wilcox was born May 27, 1926 in Minneapolis, MN to Archibald and Vivian (Logeais) Bartlett. On June 17, 1944 she and Walter "Bud" Wilcox were married in Texas with a military wedding. They lived in Minneapolis where she was a dedicated homemaker. In November of 1995 Dorothy and Bud moved to Ashby and purchased a home on Pelican Lake. Dorothy enjoyed gardening and roses, crafts and was an excellent seamstress. She was involved in Boy Scouts, enjoyed her sewing group and was a devoted mother. On Tuesday, October 15, 2002 Dorothy passed away at her son’s home in St. Michael, MN at the age of 76 following a courageous three year battle with cancer. She is survived by her husband, Walter; two daughters, Diane (Robert) Reinke of Vermillion, SD and their children, Jennifer (Jason) Mote of Chicago, Ill, Jessica Reinke of Atlanta, Georgia and Jacqueline Reinke of Vermillion, SD and Cheryl (William) Larson of Maple Grove, MN and their son, Michael J. Foye of Maple Grove; sons, Richard E. of St. Michael, MN and Ronald (Lisa) of Elk River, MN and their children, Sarah and Jennifer Tresise and Daniel Wilcox all of Elk River. She was preceded in death by her parents. Blessed be the Memory of Dorothy A. Wilcox.

Robert Klovstad
Robert Klovstad, 71, of Fergus Falls died Wednesday, October 16, 2002 at Lake Region Hospital. He was born July 28, 1931 in Maplewood Township to Carroll and Ruth (Bakken) Klovstad. He was baptized and confirmed at Maplewood Lutheran Church. He attended country school through the eighth grade and then helped his dad on the family farm. He followed his brothers, Kenneth and Kermit, to serve in the U.S. Army during the Korean War where he received a Purple Heart. He met and later married Sandra Samuelson on August 9, 1960 at the Church of the Nazarene in Fergus Falls. They had a daughter, Susan, on February 27, 1962. He worked at A-A Tire Company, National Tea Packing Company and Conagra Flour Mills. He enjoyed going for drives and hunting and fishing with his son-in-law and grandsons. He is survived by his wife, Sandra; daughter, Susan (David) Grasshoff of Morris; three grandchildren, Bryan, Kayla and Jason Grasshoff all of Morris; brothers, Kermit (Carolyn) Klovstad of Erhard, Kenneth (Marlys) Klovstad of Fergus Falls, Percy (Claudia) Klovstad of Underwood and Wayne (Connie) Klovstad of Erhard. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Verna Holmes
Verna Holmes, 89, of Minneapolis, formerly of Buchanan Lake near Ottertail, died Thursday, October 17, 2002 at Fairview Southdale Hospital in Minneapolis. She was born April 21, 1913 in Heimdal, ND to Albert and Mathilda (Smith) Haavig. She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith and attended school in the Heimdal area. She was a homemaker in the home and was active with church work in New Rockford, ND where she also taught Sunday School. After she retired she spent winters in Texas and summers at her lake cottage on Buchanan Lake. The last few years she has lived in Minneapolis. She enjoyed cooking and reading and was always very informed on world affairs. She is survived by her son, Elvin (Donna) Halverson of Owatonna; grandson, David Halverson of St. Paul and two sisters, Mrs. Bill (Meryl) Beauclair of Minot, ND and Mrs. Dennis (Hazel) Maas of Riverside, CA.

Ruby Strande
Ruby L. Strande, 82, of Fergus Falls died Thursday, October 17, 2002 at Lake Region Hospital. She was born September 13, 1920 in Akron Township, rural Rothsay, to Otto and Caroline (Bachman) Max. She attended school District #28 in Akron Township. She lived at home and helped on the family farm. On December 31, 1952 she was married to Adolph Strande at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Wahpeton, ND by Rev. Frey. They lived and farmed in Buse Township until 1955, then moved to Western Township where they lived and farmed for 37 years. In the early 1990's they moved back to their farm in Carlisle Township. Mr. Strande died July 11, 2000. She was a very family oriented person who enjoyed the family farm helping her husband and sons. She received much pleasure from and was very proud of her grandchildren. She is survived by three sons, Adrian Strande, Arvid (Nancy) Strande and Alan Strande all of Fergus Falls and three grandchildren, Jonathan Strande of Burnesville, Jeffrey (Missy) Strande of Apple Valley and Annette Strande of Fergus Falls. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Adolph; infant son; five brothers, Otto, Richard, John, Kermit and an infant brother; five sisters, Helen, Cora, Glee, Inez and infant sister.

Lori Kaye Dorn
Lori Kaye Dorn, age 43, of Fergus Falls died Friday, October 18, 2002 at her residence in Fergus Falls. She was born October 16, 1959 at Lake Region Hospital and baptized into the Lutheran Faith. She attended schools in Fergus Falls. She completed her LPN Nurses Training at FFCC and worked in nursing homes and clinics in Moorhead, MN as long as her health permitted. On April 8, 1978, she married Darrell Dorn in Fergus Falls. She had a great love for animals and worked at the Humane Society in earlier years. She was proud of her nursing profession and very knowledgeable of her work. Survivors include her son Jeremy and his special friend Karla Fronning; parents Dale and Janice Rieken; a brother Loren (Kristi) Rieken; nephews Micah and Tyson all of Fergus Falls; grandmother Hazel Bowman who resides at the Pioneer Nursing Home; aunts and uncles James and Mary Bowman of Elgin, Illinois, Dennis and Paulette Bowman of Fergus Falls, Bernard and Elaine Fossan of Dalton, Ardis Rieken and La Villa Nelson of Fergus Falls; numerous cousins; and also her loving companion of many years her dog Daisy Mae. She was preceded in death by her grandparents, Ernest Bowman, William and Bertha Rieken; and an infant brother Lowell. Private Services will be held.

Martha V. Rossum
Martha V. Rossum, age 83, of Evansville passed away October 28, 2002 at Crestview Manor Nursing Home in Evansville. She was born August 10, 1919 in Carson, ND to John and Sarah (Pahl) Huber. She grew up and graduated from Thane High School in Carson, ND. She later moved to Evansville where she married Earl Rossum on April 7, 1940 at Our Saviors Lutheran Church. They made their home in Evansville and she started out cooking at the school. She later worked as a waitress in Evansville, the drug store, and later for the clinic in Elbow Lake, MN. She then went to work for Herbergers in Alexandria for many years. After her retirement, she worked as an aid at the Evansville school where she loved working with the children and the children loved her very much. She was a member of Faith Lutheran Church where she was active in different groups and circles. She was a former member of the Evansville Garden Club. She talked about how as a young girl her family would always get together and sing. Music was always a very special part of her life. She enjoyed her garden and flowers. She is survived by her daughter, Patsy (David) Ostugaard of Irvine, PA; three grandchildren, Craig (Natalie) of Pioneer, CA and their two children Carly and Madissen, Dr. Carry (Lillian) of Pensicola, FL and their two children Luke and Adam, and Catherine (Fiancee Gary Zimmer) of Bozeman, MT; two sisters, Lilly (Tony) Ackerman of Uleitzig, ND and Delores Hart of Yakima, WA; and one brother, Fred (Freda) Rossum of Lake Forest, CA. She was preceded in death by her husband in September of 1991; her parents; and thirteen siblings.

Doris Ressler
Doris Ressler, 73, of Fergus Falls died Thursday, October 31, 2002 at Lake Region Hospital. She was born October 4, 1929 in Rutland, IA to Clifford and Lois (Jurgens) Saxby. She was raised in Rutland and graduated from Rutland High School in 1947. She married Gordon Gregory who passed away in 1971. In 1973 she married Bill Ressler. She worked many years in retail in Algona, IA. She and Bill moved to Minnesota in 1977 where she continued working in retail. She later was employed with Telnet where she worked until retiring in 1991. She was a member of Federated Church. Doris enjoyed cooking, gardening, fishing, bowling, golfing, playing cards and her pets. She enjoyed her family and friends and life. She is survived by her husband, Bill; children, Roger (Pat) Gregory of Crystal Lake, IL, Randy (Shirley) Gregory of Mezappa, MN, Geraldine (Kenneth) Stripling of Manning, IA, Suzanne (Gerald) Bormann of Pinewood, MN, Nancy (Steve) Waller of Breezy Point, MN, Robert (Linda) Ressler of Globe, AZ and David (Patty) Ressler of Manitowoc, WI; 16 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; a sister, Mary (Duane) Kerston of Lamar, MO; special mother-in-law, Rose Ressler of Humboldt, IA; nieces, nephews, relatives, friends and "Max". She was preceded in death by her parents and two sisters.
