Valeria Waytashek
Valeria Marie Waytashek, age 74, a resident of Hillman, MN, formerly of the Pierz, MN, area, died October 11, 1997, at the St. Cloud Hospital as a result of injuries received in an automobile accident. Valeria was born July 25, 1923, in Rice, MN, to the late Lawrence and Ann (Schafer) Aschenbrener. She attended school in Rice and, at the age of 17, she taught in a country school. She was united in marriage to Jerome John Waytashek on September 19, 1943. They lived in the Pierz area until 1986. During that time, she taught school in Pierz and Lastrup. She owned and operated an antique store in Little Falls, MN. Valeria sold German Mutual storm insurance, was a stockbroker and farmed with her husband north of Pierz. After retiring they moved to Fort Meyers, FL, and summered in the Hillman area. She enjoyed painting, collecting antiques, book work and spending time with her family. She was a member of Christian Mothers.
Survivors include her sons, Roger and wife Fran of Cambridge, MN, Paul and wife Connie of Little Falls and Wayne of Cambridge, MN; daughters, Bonnie Holstlander and companion Bruce of Duluth, MN, Diane Barber of Phoenix, AZ, Debra Zipf and husband Matt of Plymouth, MN, and Mari Jo Poster and husband John of Pierz; sons-in-laws, Harvey Patterson of Rogers, MN, and Raymond Woitalla of Harding; sisters, Ermma Merenda and husband Joe of Texas and Grace Barthelemy and husband Al of Royalton; brothers, Erwin Aschenbrener and wife Dedris of North Dakota; 26 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Jerome in 1991; three daughters, Laurie in 1977, Sylvia in 1992 and Gloria in 1997; great-granddaughter Bethany in 1994 and brothers, Roman (Buddy) and Clarence Aschenbrener.
Albina Woitalla
Albina Woitalla, age 82, a resident of Harding, MN died October 15, 1997 at St. Mary’s Villa in Pierz, MN.
Funeral services were held October 18, at Holy Cross Catholic Church in Harding with Father Roger Thoennes officiating. Lector was Fred Jelinski. Burial was in the parish cemetery.
Albina was born March 30, 1915 in Elmdale, MN to Philip and Mary (Schichta) Koroll. She was united in marriage with Joachim Woitalla on October 10, 1933 in Elmdale. Following their marriage, they moved to Harding, where they farmed. Albina was a great cook and cooked for many church functions and many weddings. She loved her garden, cooking and baking.
Survivors include a son, Donald of Harding; daughters, Rose Jelinski and husband Lawrence of Freedhem, MN, Grace Manlick and husband Leroy of Little Falls, MN; sisters, Agnes Knopik of Little Falls and Margaret Dobis of St. Anna, MN; 11 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband (October 22, 1996); brothers, Mike, Stanley, Peter and Roman Koroll; and a sister, Mary Schmidtz.
Casketbearers were grandsons: Larry, Danny, James and Tom Jelinski, David and Mike Manlick.
Carroll F. Nelson
Carroll F. Nelson, 84 year-old resident of Pillager, MN, passed away October 10, 1997 at the Northwoods Care Center in Brainerd, MN.
Memorial services were held October 13 at the First Baptist Church in Pillager. Reverend Robert Osell and Reverend Carl Lindman officiated. Interment was at the Wildwood Cemetery in Pillager.
Carroll was born July 17, 1913 to Carl A. and Anna (Borgstrom) Nelson in Rail Prairie Township. In March of 1939 he married Lucille Kunkel of Rail Prairie Township. He was a logger, farmer and construction worker and he lived all his life in the area. He was very conscientious at whatever task he was involved in. His main concerns were his family and his church, First Baptist Church of Pillager.
Survivors include his wife, Lucille; sons, Carroll Dease (Butch) of Brainerd, Richard (Kathy) and Joe of Cushing; daughter, Karen (Lanny) Scearcy of Brainerd, Becky Nelson of Minnesota School of Social Work, she joined the Navy as a WAVE. During World War II, she trained aviators at bases in Kansas, Connecticut, where she spent 43 years as a resident of Newington. She was a social worker with the Newington Crippled Children’s Hospital and the V.A. Hospital. She loved gardening, cooking, music, poetry, art and theater and was deeply concerned with social issues. She served as president of the Newington Chapter of the League of Women Voters and as chairman of the Fair Housing Committee of the Newington Human Relations Council. She opened her family home to foreign exchange students from Chile, Turkey, Pakistan and Indonesia. An active member of The Church of Christ, Congregational, her generous heart and concern for others endeared her to many. She was married twice, first to Magnus G. Dahl, an engineer with Arrow Hart & Hegeman, who died in 1979; then in 1985 to John W. Wallace, former Newington superintendent of schools who died in 1993. Survivors include her loving children, Kirsten M. Dahl of Santa Monica and Miles G. Dahl of Merrimack, NH; grandson, Michael G. Dahl; sisters and brothers, Florence Schmidt of Miami, FL, Doris Tofsly of McIntosh, MN, Edward Johnson of Edina, MN, and Danford and Warren Johnson, both of Little Falls; many nieces and nephews; stepchildren, Clifford Dahl, Rhoda Karrer and Waldermar Dahl and their children and grandchildren.
Thelma Ryman
Thelma V. Ryman, age 78, a resident of Little Falls, MN, died October 15, 1997, at St. Otto’s Care Center in Little Falls.
Funeral services were held October 17 at St. Otto’s Care Center with the Rev. Suzanne Cekalla officiating. Interment was in Scandia Valley Cemetery.
Thelma was born December 18, 1918, in Hastings, MN, to the late Ortell O. and Bertha M. (Powers) Hamer. As a young girl, she moved with her family to Minneapolis, MN. She attended and graduated from Washburn High School in Minneapolis. After graduation she moved to Chicago and attended fashion design school, returned to Minneapolis continuing her education at the University of Texas, and Berlin, Germany before moving to rural Motley in January of 1995. He was a member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church and was a fourth grader at Staples North Elementary School.
Survivors include his parents, Gregory and Alexandra Eckes of Motley; grandparents, Matt Stimach of Ft. Lauderdale, FL, Inge Stimach of Fuengirola, Spain, and Louis Eckes of Motley; great-grandparents, Hans and Betty Messthaler of Nuernberg, Germany. He was preceded in death by his grandmother, Peggy Eckes.
