Agnes Hedin
Agnes O. Hedin, age 86, a resident of Davenport, IA, formerly of Upsala, MN, died January 4, 1998, at Davenport Lutheran Home, Davenport.
Funeral services were held on January 10 at Trinity Lutheran Church, Clinton, IA, with Rev. Michael Holm of Clinton and Rev. Michael of Trinity Lutheran Church, Davenport, officiating. Burial was at Clinton Lawn Cemetery.
Agnes was born January 21, 1911, to Ferdinand and Blondina (Ulrich) Oestreich in New Ger-many, MN. The family settled near Pine Lake, Burtrum, MN, in 1927. She graduated from Upsala High School in 1931. She married Robert Hedin on June 6, 1931, in Grey Eagle, MN. They lived in Upsala until moving to Clinton in 1941, returning to Upsala in 1945 to own and operate Hedin Grocery. They returned to Clinton in 1952. Her husband, Robert, died January 11, 1973. Agnes retired after 20 years as a repair operator at the Clinton Garment Company. She was a charter member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Clinton and more recently a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Davenport. Her ardent interests and hobbies included crafting, gardening, fishing, watching baseball, her family, nature and the outdoors.
Survivors include daughters, Donna (Joe) Kampling, Sr., of Camanche, IA, and Darlene (Don) Krenz of Westport, CT; grandchildren, Steven (Christina) Ryner of Fulton, IL, Renée (Ken) Carsto of Miami Beach, FL, Carolyn (Antone) Balbo of Short Hills, NJ, Jeanne (Phil) Krenz-Hinck of Westport, Dawnita (Jim) Neff of Davenport, Joseph “Rocky” (Becky) Kampling, Jr., of Shullsburg, WI, Kaywyn (Paul) Beswick of Morrison, IL, and Kim (Dan) Bennett of Fulton; 12 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; a sister, Frances Fagerman of Walker, MN; sister-in-law Edna Hedin of Melrose, MN; cousins, Glen Johnson of West Concord, MN, and Myrtle Mokros of Upsala; and several nieces and nephews, including from this area Shirley (David) Holmen of Upsala, Marilyn (John) Gerlach of Upsala and Ruby Stein and Myrtle Rundquist, both of Little Falls, MN.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert; a granddaughter, Jennifer and 12 brothers and sisters.
Pallbearers were Donald Krenz, Joseph Kampling, Sr., Joseph Kampling, Jr., Les Humphreys, Gail Ryner and Ken Carsto. Honorary pallbearers were James Neff and Ron Luckritz.
Edwin Axel
Edwin K. “Ed” Axel, age 89, a resident of Little Falls, MN, formerly of the Randall, MN area, died January 26, 1998, at the Lutheran Care Center in Little Falls.
Funeral services were held January 29 at Zion Lutheran Church in Little Falls with Rev. Martin Langemo officiating.
Burial was in the Oakland Cemetery.
Edwin was born November 13, 1908, in Culdrum Township, Morrison County, MN, to the late Frederick and Mary (Rahn) Axel. He grew up in Culdrum Township and attended country school. Edwin was united in marriage to Ella H. Petrich on October 1, 1932, in Emmanual Lutheran Church in Culdrum Township. They settled on a rented farm west of Lincoln, MN, until 1935. They returned to Culdrum Township and farmed until 1944. The couple then purchased a farm southwest of Randall and resided there until moving into Little Falls in 1955. Ed worked at Hennepin Paper Mill for 18 years, retiring in 1973. He then worked at Little Falls Granite Works for a few years. He served as the caretaker of the animals in Pine Grove Park for eight years. The couple sold their home and resided in a townhouse. Ed enjoyed gardening, fishing and taking care of his lawn. He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Little Falls.
Survivors include his wife, Ella H. Axel; sons, Edwin Axel, Jr., and wife Joan of Belle Vista, AR, and Harvey Axel and wife Darlene of Little Falls; daughters, Beatta Mielke and husband Loren of Swanville, MN, Dorothy Decker and husband Edward of Brooklyn Center, MN, and Audrey Hopke and husband Terry of St. Cloud, MN; a sister, Marie Doucette of Little Falls; 17 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Ernest, Otto, Arthur and Herbert Axel; sister, Erma Hanson and grandsons, Bryan and Gregg Axel.
Pallbearers were grandsons.
Melvin Cross
Melvin Cross, age 84, a resident of Winnebago, MN, died January 16, 1998, in Mesa, AZ. He lived in the Little Falls and Pierz areas for more than 40 years.
Memorial services are pending.
Survivors include daughters, Kathy (Leon) Freeman of New Blaine, AR, and Bonnie (James) Haberle of Rogers, MN; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren and special friend Mary Carson.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Leola.
Margaret Kestner
Margaret Kestner, age 73, a resident of Randall, MN, died January 28, 1998, at her home.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held January 31 at St. James Catholic Church in Randall with Fr. Al Quade officiating. Burial was in the St. James Cemetery in Randall.
Margaret Marie Kestner was born on December 10, 1924 to the late William and Leona (Betts) Teiml, in Sioux City, IA. She moved to the Randall area with her parents at an early age where she attended rural schools. She graduated from Little Falls High School and then attended business college in St. Cloud. She was united in marriage to James Kestner on August 27, 1946, in Randall. The couple farmed in Minnesota-Duluth where he worked for the railroad for four years during the summer months. He received his teaching degree in 1931, and began teaching in Bagley, MN. He taught and coached in Bagley from 1932 until 1936. In 1937 Harry began teaching in Tipton, IA. He was united in marriage to Margaret Nelson on August 13, 1939 at the Methodist Church in Proctor, MN. After marriage the couple lived in Tipton, IA until 1943. They later moved to Marshall, MN where they resided for over 40 years. Harry continued teaching industrial education and coaching football and track. The couple retired in 1990 and moved to Little Falls and lived at the Edgewater Terrace where they enjoyed watching the river and feeding the ducks. Margaret passed away December 31, 1992, and in 1995 Harry became a resident of the St. Otto’s Care Center in Little Falls residing there until his death. Harry enjoyed hunting, fishing, going to the family cabin, picking berries and making wine. He loved spending time with his grandchildren and helping themin any way he could.
Survivors include his sons, John E. and wife Carol of Little Falls; Peter L. and wife Laura of Spooner, WI; daughters, Lynn Hutchinson and Susan Nichols of Seattle, WA; eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, parents, a brother in childhood and two sisters, Wally Whiterabbit and Eva Salomi.
Alcuin Welle
Alcuin J. Welle, age 63, a resident of Lastrup, MN, died Monday, January 5, 1998, at St. Gabriel’s Hospital in Little Falls, MN.
Mass of Christian Burial was January 9 at St. John’s Catholic Church in Lastrup with Father Roger Thoennes officiating. Burial was in the parish cemetery.
Al was born on the farm near Lastrup on March 19, 1934, to George and Martha (Wagner) Welle. He attended Lastrup grade school and graduated from Little Falls High School. Al was united in marriage with Leola Janson on June 26, 1956, in Lastrup. They owned and operated Welle’s Store from 1957 until 1975. He was a mail carrier since 1975 and was the Mayor of Lastrup from 1962 until 1976. Al was a member of St. John’s Church and was also a Eucharistic Minister at St. John’s. He was a charter member of the Two Cylinder Club, a member of Knights of Columbus, a member of Morrison County Historical Society, Wyoming, MN; Bernie Lattimer and husband George of Little Falls; Betty Wilson and husband Jim of Cocoa Beach, FL; and Bernice Podroza and husband Richard of Eveleth, MN; sisters, Sophie Zimmerman and Rose Borash both of Little Falls, and Lucy Welner of South St. Paul, MN; 24 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband John on March 3, 1989; son Anthony; infant daughter; grandson Jon Wilson; brothers, John, Leo and Vince, Jr.; sisters, Anna, Stella and Agnes.
Casketbearers were Mary’s grandsons, Tom Lattimer, John Imgrund, John Rudek, Jim Wilson, David Brown and David Imgrund. Giftbearers were granddaughters, Cindy Kolkind, Connie Hoheisel and Linda Poissant.
Violet Wahl
Violet Lucille Wahl, age 75, a resident of Cushing, MN, died January 12, 1998, at the St. Cloud Hospital, St. Cloud, MN.
Services were held January 16 at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Randall, MN, with Rev. James Lewis officiating. Burial followed at the
Parker and husband John; six grandchildren, Scott, JJ, Aaron, Elizabeth, Mary and Katie; brother, James and wife Ann; nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.
