Susan Theis
Susan Catherine Theis, age 94, a resident of Buckman, MN, died January 12, 1998, at St. Mary’s Villa in Pierz, MN.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held January 15 at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Buckman with Father Ron Dockendorf officiating. Burial was in the parish cemetery.
Susan was born on March 12, 1903, in Agram Township, Morrison County, MN, to the late Frank and Catherine (Jaeger) Bolster. She grew up and attended country school in Agram Township. At age 21, she was a housekeeper in Minneapolis, MN. She was united in marriage to Nicholas “Nick” Theis on June 11, 1928, in Melrose, MN. Following their marriage, Nick and Susan resided on the family farm in rural Buckman which was originally homesteaded by his father. In 1957, they moved to Buckman. They continued to reside in Buckman until 1981 when they moved to the Alverna Apartments until August of 1989. At that time, she became a resident of St. Mary’s Villa in Pierz where she resided until her death. Susan was a member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Buckman, St. Michael’s Christian Mothers (Gold Medal Member) of which she was a former president, member of the Franciscan Secular Third Order and was active in Mission Circles. She enjoyed gardening as a hobby, cooking and baking.
Survivors include her son, Claude Theis and wife Carol of Buckman; daughters, Marie Meyer and husband Roman of Royalton, MN, and Ellen Akotchik and husband John of Little Falls, MN; brother, Leo Bolster and wife Lucille of Pierz; 10 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband; parents; sisters, Marie Bussen, Theresa Dillenburg, Barbara Kaas and Ceil Leidenfrost and brothers, Frank, Matt, John and Bill Bolster.
Honorary pallbearers were granddaughters, Jeanne Knopik, Julie Kummet, Bonnie Martin, Amy Schmidt, Sue Evanoff and Debbie Condiff.
Casketbearers were grandsons, Neil and Loren Meyer, Tom and John Theis, Joe Martin and Dick Knopik.
Hannah M. Hohmann
Hannah M. Hohmann, age 81, a resident of Rice, MN, died January 14, 1998 at the St. Cloud Hospital.
Funeral services for Hannah Hohmann were held January 17 at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Rice, with the Rev. David Maciej officiating. Burial was in the parish cemetery.
Hannah M. Hohmann was born July 10, 1916 in St. Stephen, MN to Frank and Anna (Schumer) Trobec. She married Robert Hohmann on September 2, 1940 in St. Stephen Catholic Church. She was a homemaker and lived her entire life in the Rice area. She was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church and a jubilee member of the Christian Mothers. She was also a member of the Rice Senior Citizens and the Langola Birthday Club.
She is mother and mother-in-law to, Evelyn and Robert Slivnik of St. Stephen, Ruthie Hohmann of St. Cloud, Daniel Hohmann of St. Cloud, Robert and Diane Hohmann of Rice, Frank and Charlene Hohmann of Royalton, MN, Andy Hohmann of Rice, and George Hohmann of Little Falls, MN; sister and brothers, Mary Schimnich of Sartell, MN, John Trobec of St. Cloud, and Tony Trobec of St. Stephen; and eight grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Robert on May 25, 1984; son, Ron on May 24, 1976; brothers, Frank, Joe, and Jim; sister, Annie; and twin sister, Helen Blenkush.
Casketbearers were Jim, Tom, and Gerald Trobec, Philip and Jerome Schimnich, and Bob Blenkush.
Frances Jankowski
Frances Jankowski, age 96, a resident of St. Mary’s Villa in Pierz, MN, died February 7, 1998, at the Villa.
Funeral services were held February 9 at St. Mary’s Villa Chapel with Father Ron Docken-dorf officiating. Burial was in St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Buckman, MN.
Frances was born March 1, 1901, in Agram Township, MN, to Fred and Mary (Fischer) Spor-lein. Frances lived in Chicago, IL, for approximately 30 years where she did housekeeping prior to moving to Brainerd, MN. She moved to Pierz in 1986 and later became a resident of St. Mary’s Villa.
Survivors include a daughter, Mary Queen of Chicago; a sister, Freida Schamal of Pierz and three grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents and husband.
Dessie Leander
Dessie Margaret Leander, age 90,died at the Mille Lacs Nursing Home on February 2, 1998.
Funeral services were held February 6 at the Alliance Church in Onamia, MN, with Pastor Tom Franklin officiating. Interment followed at the Mount Pleasant Cemetery.
Dessie was born February 16, 1907, near Buffalo, MN, to John and Alma (Mills) Hayes. She grew up in the Buffalo, MN, area, then moved with her family to Hillman, MN. She spent her teenage years doing housework for different people in the area. She married Harry Leander on March 15, 1930, at the home of her parents in Hillman. To this union three children were born. The couple purchased the Leader farm near Onamia, where they continued to live until 1972. They then moved to Richardson Corner where they were active with the Lakeview Community Church. Dessie loved entertaining and cooking for people.
Survivors include her children, Ruth (T. Wayne) Larson of Houston, MN, John (Marilyn) of Sheridan, WY, and Mary (LeRoy) Johnson of Onamia; nine grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; sister, Fern (Richard) Johnson of San Leandro, CA; brothers, Rex (Lois) and Del (Winnie) Hayes, both of Hillman and Wayne Hayes of Little Falls; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Harry and two grandchildren.
Casketbearers were David Larson, Tom Smith, Larry Dowell, Jack Hayes, Rod Hayes and Charles Gibson.
Edward Boisvert
Edward E. Boisvert, age 70, a resident of Spring Lake Park, MN, died February 23, 1998, at Unity Hospital in Fridley, MN.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held February 26 at St. Timothy’s Catholic Church in Blaine, MN. Interment was at the Fort Snelling National Cemetery.
Ed was born and grew up in Little Falls, MN. He married Opal Natalie Collings on February 25, 1963. He was a veteran of World War II, a life member of the Fridley VFW Post and a member of the Carpenters Union.
Survivors include his wife, Opal; mother, Frances; daughters, Kathy Deggendorf and husband Joe, Adele Boisvert, Ann Walker and husband Brian and Chrissy Boisvert; sons, Jeff and wife Yvonne and Jay; grandchildren, Joe, Ben, Sam, Billy and Maria; sisters, Evelyn Ploharz and Dorothy Daleiden and husband Kenneth; many nieces nephews and other relatives and friends.
John Wedin
John (Gene) Wedin, age 90, a resident of Upsala, MN, died February 23, 1998, at his home.
Funeral services were held February 26 at Gethsemane Lutheran Church in Upsala with Pastor Alan Bray officiating.
John was born July 16, 1907, in Upsala to Nels and Matilda (Nelson) Wedin. He was raised and educated in Upsala.He began working for the B & 0 & Alton Railroad in Chicago, IL, in 1922 as a fireman. In 1930, he moved to Grand Forks, ND, where he worked for the Great Northern & Burlington Northern Railroads as an engineer. He was united in marriage with Ida Thiers on May 21, 1933, at St. Johns Lutheran Church in Grey Eagle, MN. John retired from the railroad on September 15, 1972, after 50 years of service. In 1976, the couple moved to Upsala where they resided until John’s death. He was baptized and confirmed at Gethsem-ane Lutheran Church in Upsala. He was a past member of the Augustana Lutheran Church in Grand Forks, ND, and a present member of Gethsemane Lutheran in Upsala. John was a member of the Kem Temple, and Malta Lodge #131 of Grand Forks, was a member of Order of Eagles Aerie 350 of East Grand Forks, MN, BLF & E Union, Upsala Historical Society and a past member of the Elks, Grand Forks, ND. He enjoyed fishing, gardening, his family and his grandchildren.
Survivors include his wife, Ida; children, Robert Wedin and wife Phyllis of Grand Forks, ND, Judy Barta and husband Stan of Washington, D.C., for nine years, as a clerk for the Veterans and Labor Department. In 1955 he moved to Minneapolis, where he was Head Purchasing Agent over marketing for the U.S. Department of Agriculture. He retired in 1974 and moved to Long Prairie. He enjoyed traveling the 49 states, poem writing, fishing and bird watching. He had received the “Golden Poet Award” for published poems. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, the Long Prairie Legion Post #12 and life member of the National Association of Civilian Conservation Corp.
Survivors include sister, Dorothy Mrozek, Winona, MN; six nephews and one niece. He was preceded in death by two brothers and two sisters, infants Doris and Cyril, Wymond Krousey and Violette McCollar.
Casketbearers were Arnie Westerberg, Rev. Paul Twist, Ray Dols, Mike Sieve, Ev Bullert and Jim Muenchow.
Dolores Johnson
Dolores Mae Johnson, age 68, a resident of Red Wing, MN, died Friday, February 27, 1998, at her home.
A gathering was held on March 3, her home in Red Wing.
Dolores was born February 26, 1930, in Little Falls, MN, the daughter of George and Pearl (Dumprope) Kohs. She attended school in Little Falls. She married Ken W. Johnson on June 28, 1952, in Little Falls. They moved to Red Wing from St. Peter, MN, in March, 1990.
Survivors include her husband, Ken of Red Wing; three daughters, Melain Johnson of Red Wing, Colette (Jeff) Wright of Colorado Springs, CO, and Lynette (Gary) Blakeney of Taylorsville, MS; five grandchildren; two brothers, Dwight (Bea) Kohs of Westminster, CO, and Robert (Jan) Kohs of Forest Lake, MN, and sister, Georgie Betts of Browerville, MN.
