George Shimek
George Shimek, age 88, a resident of Little Falls, MN, died June 9, 1998, at St. Otto’s Care Center in Little Falls.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held June 13 at Holy Family Catholic Church in Belle Prairie, MN, with Father Harold J. Kost officiating. Burial was in the parish cemetery.
George was born September 10, 1909, in Lyons County, MN, to the late John and Lena (Vopatek) Shimek. In his youth, George worked for the Northern Pacific Railroad and farmed with his father. On October 12, 1938, he married Laura Moran. They farmed in Fort Ripley from 1938 until 1989 when they retired and moved to Little Falls. George loved farming, and, when it was time to harvest or make hay, he got the work done. The annual highlight of his life was a fishing trip to Canada from 1961 to 1990 with his four sons and friends, Rich Brenny and John Loftsgaarden. Many were the fish tales they told, like not knowing what to use for bait, losing John and having to hire a plane to find him. Georgeserved as trustee of Holy Family Parish from 1949 to 1959, and was a member of the men’s Holy Name Society. He was also member of the Knights of Columbus Council #1804.
Survivors include his wife Laura of Little Falls; sons, Ronald and wife Pat of Prior Lake, Dan and wife Kay of Apple Valley, Steve and wife LeeAnn of Prior Lake, Gerald and wife Annof Prior Lake; daughters, Sue DeFore and husband Dick of Center City, Rosemary Moore of Bloomington, Carol Lenhart and husband Alan of Chanhassen; sisters, Emma Torkelson of Fergus Falls, Elizabeth Magnan of Waterford, MI, Ceceil Schwankl of Palm Springs, CA; 22 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and three brothers.
Casketbearers were John, Jessica, Michael, and Jayme Shimek, Alan Defore, and Sean Moore
Eunice Holen
Eunice E. “June” Holen, age 89,died.
A memorial service was held at Lake Nokomis Lutheran Church, Minneapolis, MN. Interment was private at Lakewood Cemetery.
Eunice lived in Little Falls many years. Mr. Holen was manager for Gambles.
Survivors include her daughter, Joyce Olson and husband Gene; son, Doug and wife Donna; grandchildren, Steve (Kathy) Olson, Lori (Jim) Egan, Nancy (Jim) Kehner, David Olson, Kathryn Olson, Janet Holen, Greg (Cathy) Holen; seven great-grandchildren;other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Henry J. and daughter, DeLauris Marle.
Angeline Boros
Angeline D. Boros, age 92, a resident of Little Falls, MN, died June 9, 1998, at St. Otto’s Care Center in Little Falls.
Mass of Christian Burial was held June 13 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Little Falls with Father Nicholas Landsberger officiating. Burial was in the parish cemetery.
Angeline was born May 9, 1906, in Swanville Township to John and Helen (Kuklok) Schneider. She attended School District 11 in Swanville Township, and the Belle Prairie Academy, Belle Prairie, MN. She married Alois Peter Boros on May 26, 1925, in Sacred Heart Church in Flensburg, MN. They farmed in rural Little Falls until 1935. She was organist at the Flensburg church and St. Adelbert’s Catholic Church in Little Falls. She held various offices in P.T.A., St. Gertrude’s Mission Circle and St. Mary’s Christian Mothers and was a member of the Third Order of St. Francis. Angeline volunteered for many years at St. Otto’s Care Center. She sewed mattress covers for the Sleepy Night Mattress Company and cared for children in her home. She was a retired member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church and had been a resident of St. Otto’s since April of 1991.
Survivors include a son, Dr. Don Boros of Binghamton, NY; four daughters, Mrs. John Kleinschmidt (Doris) of Ames, IA, Mrs. Toby Rodseth (Therese) of Bloomington, MN; Mrs. Evelyn Oothoudt of St. Cloud, MN, and Mrs. Jerry Fedor (Annette) of Little Falls; a foster daughter, Mrs. Dorothy Ranslow of Des Moines, IA; brothers and sisters, Ben of Morris, MN, Al of Little Falls, Alphonse of Swanville, MN, Jerry of Blaine, MN, Peter of Owatonna, MN, Edward of Gilbert, MN, Sister Mary Fabian, O.S.F. of Flensburg, and Mrs. James Cane (Arlyce) of Inver Grove Heights, MN; 21 grandchildren; 37 great-grandchildren and four step-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband in 1980; sons, Anthony in 1932 and Claude in 1996; sisters, Florence Schlumpberger and Sister Mary Eugenia, O.S.F.; and a brother, Stanley.
Casketbearers were Patrick Boros, Mary Spuzello, Tom Oothoudt, Kristi Shepard, John Fedor and Chuckie Schneider.
Hannah Krueger
Hannah M. (Johnson) Krueger, age 96, a resident of Little Falls, MN, formerly of Swanville, MN, died June 14, 1998, at the Lutheran Care Center in Little Falls.
Funeral services were held at the Swanville Bible Church in Swanville on June 18 with the Rev. Roland Jennings officiating. Burial was in the Springbrook Cemetery in Swanville.
Hannah was born June 18, 1901, in Houston County, MN, to the late William and Pauline (Klante) Fruechte. She grew up in Houston County and attended school there. She was united in marriage to Bernard L. Johnson on September 20, 1920, in Lucan, MN. The couple farmed in the Lucan area until 1927 when they moved to Swanville. They farmed in the Swanville area until Bernard’s death in May 1946. After Bernard’s death, Hannah moved to Minnesota Supreme Court Justice Walter Rogosheske, age 83, died May 15, 1998, in St. Paul, MN.
Funeral services were held May 19 at Pilgrim Lutheran Church in St. Paul.
Walter grew up near Little Falls, MN. He attended St. Cloud State Teachers College and Valparaiso University in Minnesota Law School. He served in the Army during World War II and delighted in telling anyone who asked that he served with distinction by “cleaning latrines with a toothbrush in Minnesota. His legislative career ended after he pushed a bill to outlaw slot machines in bars. He was eventually made a district judge by Governor Luther Youngdahl. In 1962, Governor Elmer L. Andersen elevated him to the State Supreme Court where he served for 20 years.
Survivors include his wife, Dorothy of Little Canada, MN; sons, Jim of New Brighton, MN, Paul of Mahtomedi, MN, and Mark of West St. Paul, MN; daughter, Mary Alice Stoehr of Maplewood, MN, and 13 grandchildren.
Erma L. Felling
Erma L. Felling, age 85, died June 9, 1998, at her home in Sauk Centre, MN.
A Mass of Christian burial was held June 12 at St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Sauk Centre with the Rev. Timothy Wenzel officiating. Burial followed in the parish cemetery.
Erma Felling was born on January 8, 1913, in Elrosa, MN, to Ben and Rose (Bonemeyer) Osendorf. She was united in marriage to Paul P. Felling on June 25, 1934, in Elrosa, MN. They moved to Sauk Centre where she has resided ever since their marriage. She was a member of St. Paul’s Catholic Church, the Altar and Rosary Guilds, Christian Mothers, St. Theresa’s Mission Group and the Sauk Centre Country Club.
Survivors include her children, Joan Felling, O.S.B. of St. Joseph, MN, Jan Beste and her husband, Will of Sauk Centre, June Rutten and her husband, Jim of Sauk Centre, Joyce Turner and her husband, Mike of Burnsville, MN, Jim Felling and his wife, Becky of Hutchinson, John Felling and his wife, Christy of Sauk Centre, Julie Hochsprung and her husband, Lee of Little Falls, MN; sister, Bernie Forsyth and her husband, Bob of Little Falls; 28 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Paul on August 6, 1981; son, Jackie; sister, Helen Uphus; brothers, Norb and Wilfred “Ozze” Osendorf.
Casketbearers were grandchildren Chad Beste, Brad and Derek Rutten, Shawn and Ryan Turner, Jim, Tad and Ben Felling.
Crossbearer was Laura Hoschsprung.
Honorary bearers were Margaret Dubois, JoAnn Motzko, Lucille Jansen, Lolly Bromen, Viola Bromen, Shirley Nietfeld, Louise Frank, Jo Kater, Margaret Larson and Ivy Hildebrand.
George G. (Bud) Batters
George G. (Bud) Batters, age 69, a resident of Little Falls, MN, died June 21, 1998, at the St. Cloud Hospital in St. Cloud, MN.
A private graveside service will be held at a later date.
George (Bud) Batters was born to the late Clarence and Evelyn (Blake) Batters on May 18, 1929, in Little Falls in his home, where he resided for his entire life. He attended Little Falls schools, graduating with the class of 1947. He participated in sports in high school and avidly hunted with his relatives and friends. As a young man, Bud worked with his father at Batters Sand and Gravel. He was united in marriage to Joane VanThuyne in 1953. In 1963, he became active in road construction throughout Minnesota State Veteran’s Cemetery. Military rites were conducted by the Little Falls American Legion Post #46.
Robert E. Steele was born July 21, 1913, in Chicago, IL, to the late Earl and Maud (Cochran) Steele. The family moved to Colorado in 1919 where Bob graduated from Greeley, Colorado, High School in 1932. He worked as a cowboy in New Mexico for two years. He then worked as a miner and as a photographer. He returned to Chicago and worked at Abbott Laboratories in their cost accounting department on IBM equipment. In 1940, he began work for the Department of Agriculture in Denver, CO. Bob entered the U.S. Navy in 1942 and served on submarines until his discharge in 1945. He returned to Denver and resumed working for the Department of Agriculture until his recall into the U.S. Navy in 1950 during the Korean Conflict. He returned to work at the Department of Agriculture on IBM computers until transferring to Lowry AFB in 1953, where he taught computers. Bob was united in marriage to Norma Spealman on April 14, 1954 ,in Denver. He was transferred in 1954 to Sheppard AFB in Wichita Falls, TX, and helped train Air Force officers in computer technology until retiring in 1971. The couple purchased Big Horn Bay Resort on Lake Ida in 1971, near Alexandria, MN, which they operated until 1981. They returned to Greeley in 1981 and came to reside in Little Falls in 1997. Bob was a medal winner in the Senior Olympics, competing from 1986-94. He was a charter member of the Golden K Kiwanis in Greeley and served as the program chair for many years. He was active in Mended Hearts, Meals on Wheels, CatholicCharities and the Centennial Village, allin Greeley.
Survivors include his wife, Norma; son, Vance Steele of Little Falls; daughter, Nancy Dobmeier and husband Clarence of Little Falls; and grandchildren, Brett and Brittany Dobmeier of Little Falls.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Phil Steele; and sister, Janice Steele.
