Hugh Gaffney, age 101, of Randall, MN, died June 22, 1998, at the VA Hospital in St. Cloud. Arrangements are pending with the Brenny Funeral Chapel in Randall.
Ralph Carlson
Ralph Carlson, age 76, a resident of rural Little Falls, MN passed away June 15, 1998 at his home.
A Requiem High Mass was held June 19 at St. Robert Bellarmine Catholic Church in St. Cloud, MN with Father Jorge Diaz officiating. Burial was in St. Edward’s Catholic Cemetery in Elmdale.
Ralph was born November 24, 1921 in Minneapolis, MN to Chester and Muriel Carlson. He was a graduate of Edison High School and the University of Minnesota and they relocated to Little Falls. Ralph had much love and concern for the Catholic Church and for his country. Ralph was also a member of the Holy Name Society.
Survivors include his wife, Kathleen of Little Falls; sons, Joseph of Sauk Centre, MN, Thomas and Peter of St. Paul, MN, James of Mahtomedi, MN, John of Roseville, MN, Matthew of Spring Grove, PA, Michael of Sao Paulo, Brazil, and Christopher at home; daughters, Mary Masog of St. Cloud, Ann Slagle and husband Gregory of Roseville, Therese Angele of Post Falls, ID, and Marie Carlson of Sartell, MN, sisters, Mrs. Robert (Audrey) Norgren of Minneapolis, Mrs. Gail Cullen of Fridley, MN, and Mrs. David (Julie) Hartung of Stillwater, MN; and 25 grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Paul J. Carlson; grandsons, Steven Masog and Luke Carlson; and a brother, Paul Q. Carlson.
Casketbearers were his sons.
Floyd Richmond
Floyd W. Richmond, age 83, a resident of Royalton, MN, died June 27, 1998, at his home.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held June 30 at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Royalton, with Father Laurn Virnig officiating. Burial was in the parish cemetery.
Floyd was born August 10, 1914, in Greenwood, WI, to the late William and Elsie (Shaw) Richmond. He was united in marriage to Hilda Wilson in Waukegan, IL, on December 12, 1936, and worked in Milwaukee, WI, before moving to a farm near Neillsville, WI. He farmed and ranched in Whitetail, MT, from the late 1940s before settling in Royalton in 1956. Floyd was a lifelong dairy farmer until he retired. He enjoyed playing cards and dominoes and visiting with his family.
Survivors include his sons, Floyd J. and wife Lynne of Little Falls, MN, and Kenneth and wife Eloise of Buena Vista, CO; daughters, Shirley Kuhlmey and husband Norman, Marie Peterick and husband Kenneth and Eva Richmond, all of Royalton; 18 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; brother, Robert of Janesville, WI; sister, Berdine Gretchmacher of Richmond, IN; half brother, Kenneth Gardner of San Diego, CA, and Rose Ringwelski of Flint, MI; 60 grandchildren; 121 great-grandchildren and seven great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Albert; one son, Ray; four brothers; three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Casketbearers were Fred, David, Dan, Gene, Jerry and James Lashinski.
Honorary casketbearer was Don Wippler.
Frank Smuda
Frank Smuda, age 87, a resident of Little Falls, MN, died June 28, 1998, at his home in Little Falls.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held July 1 at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church with Father Leroy Kremer officiating. Burial was in the parish cemetery. American Legion Post #46 conducted military rites.
Frank was born April 2, 1911, in Little Falls to Peter and Tillie Smuda. He resided at his family’s farm in Pike Creek Township all of his life. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. After his discharge he went to work for the Hennepin Paper Co. in Little Falls where he worked for 32-1/2 years. After his retirement in 1976, he worked with his family running Smuda’s Zoo until 1990. In his younger years he enjoyed many hours of fishing. He especially looked forward to the time when he could put his ice house on Pike Creek to spear fish. He helped his late sister, Louise Smuda, raise their niece and nephew. He was also a life member of American Legion Post #46.
Survivors include his niece, Alvina; nephew, Bennedict and wife, Alice Smuda, and many other nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Louise; brothers, Louie, Thomas and Joseph Smuda.
Casketbearers were John, Jerry and Wayne Smuda, Donald Zoren, James Palmquist and Richard Czech.
Mabel Sanders
Mabel V. Sanders, age 101, a resident of Little Falls, MN, and formerly of the Randall, MN, area passed away June 25, 1998, at St. Otto’s Care Center in Little Falls.
Funeral services for Mabel Sanders were held June 27 at the Randall Presbyterian Church in Randall with the Rev. SuzanneCekalla officiating.Burial was in the Randall City Cemetery.
Mabel V. Sanders was born May 2, 1897, in Darling Township, Morrison County, MN, to the late Alfred and Eurica (Nystrom) Smith. She grew up in the Randall, Lincoln and Fort Ripley areas and attended country school. After her schooling, she worked at the American Hotel in Little Falls. Mabel was united in marriage to Paul William Sanders in July of 1916 in Randall. Together the couple made their home in Fort Ripley, later moving to Lincoln and finally to Randall where they farmed and owned and operated Sanders Trucking from 1928 until 1951 when Paul died. Mabelcontinued to live on the family farm near Randall until April of 1998 when she came a resident of St. Otto’s Care Center in Little Falls and resided there until her death. Mabel was a member of the Randall Presbyterian Church in Randall, the First English Lutheran Church in Clough Township, where she was baptized, life member of the Randall VFW Auxiliary, Randall Presbyterian Ladies Aid and Randall Senior Citizens. Mabel lived for her family, her home and enjoyed bingo, flowers, needlework, crocheting, playing cards, checkers, crossword puzzles and traveling.
Survivors include sons, Calvin C. Sanders and wife Dorothy of Randall, Ivan E. Sanders and wife Dorothy of Little Falls, Kenneth F. Sanders and wife Mary of Westmont, IL, and Eldon D. Sanders and wife Viola of Randall; daughters, Arlene M. Strack and husband John of Little Falls; Harriet J. Turner and husband Herb of Randall; 27 grandchildren, 64 great-grandchildren and 14 great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband Paul on January 19, 1951; parents; sons, Paul W. and Robert L. Sanders; daughter, Joyce Kobliska; brothers, August, Albert, Ernest and Fred Smith; sisters, Bertha Smith, Byrd Fick and Amelia Johnson; half-sister, Ellen Salvhus and two grandsons, Michael Kobliska and David Strack.
Honorary pallbearers were John Strack, Kenneth Sanders, Eldon B. Sanders, Connie Kogler, Clayton Sanders and Sue Strack-Smith. Casketbearers were Emery Strack, Jerry Sanders, Larry Sanders, Dr. Kenneth Sanders, Jr., Steven Kobliska, Maureen Nelson and Jeff Turner.
Ardell Olson
Ardell Donald Olson, age 39, a resident of Little Falls, MN, formerly of Minneapolis, MN, died June 22, 1998, at his home.
Memorial services for Ardell were held privately. Burial took place in Oakland Cemetery.
Ardell was born September 24, 1958, in Little Falls, to Donald and Carol Olson. He grew up and attended school in Wayzata, MN. After completing his schooling. Ardell attended technical school in Minneapolis receiving his Maintenance Diploma. He worked in Minneapolis as a maintenance man for several years before moving to Little Falls in September of 1997 where he worked for Crestliner, Environmental Landscaping and Paul’s Firewood. Ardell was an avid hunter and outdoorsman.
Survivors include his parents, Donald and Carol Olson of Little Falls; brother, Randy Olson of Little Falls; sisters, Darla Olson of Little Falls and Cindy Olson of Motley, MN; grandparents, Swen and Edith Olson of Little Falls; grandmother, Lucille Rocheleau of Little Falls; best friend, Eugene Martin of Little Falls and two nieces and two nephews.
He was preceded in death by his grandfather, Steven Rocheleau.
Ione E. Froelich
Ione E. Froelich, age 59, a resident of Pierz, MN, died June 25, 1998, at the St. Cloud Hospital.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held June 29 at St. John Nepomuk Catholic Church in Lastrup, MN, with Rev. Roger Toennes officiating. Burial was in the parish cemetery.
Ione E. Froelich was born September 13, 1938, in Platte Township, Morrison County, MN, to Harlan ‘Boots’ and Frances (Krych) Thomsen. She grew up in Platte Township and attended country school. Ione was united in marriage to Earl P. Froelich on June 5, 1957, at Holy Cross Catholic Church in Harding, MN. The couple farmed northwest of Pierz for 41 years. Ione also worked at Rolling Hills Greenhouse in Pierz for 18 years. She was a very active member at St. John’s Nepomuk Catholic Church in Lastrup. She sang in the choir, spent many hours on volunteer work, was anEucharistic Minister and served in the Christian Women’s Group. Ione loved gardening and working in her own greenhouse. She enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren, crocheting, painting pictures and baking bread.
Survivors include her husband, Earl; son, Terry Froelich and wife Karen of Pierz; daughter, Tammy Beumer and husband Calvin of Hillman, MN; grandchildren, Sarah, Justin and Joey Froelich, all of Pierz, Allen, Stacy, Leann and Kari Beumer, all of Hillman; mother, Frances Thomsen of Brainerd, MN; brothers, Gene Thomsen and wife Gloria of Pierz, Wayne Thomsen and wife Gloria of Pierz and Dennis Thomsen and wife Pam of Brainerd; and sister, Diane Poser and husband Lenny of Pierz.
She was preceded in death by her father, Harlan ‘Boots’ Thomsen and a brother, Dale Thomsen.
Honorary casketbearers were Shirley Happke, Renee Litke, Stella Stuckmeyer, Diane Schirmers, Romana Virnig, Betty Boser, Rosi Jelinski, Joyce Weiss, Delores Saehr, Saraphine Loidolt, Matilda Kapsner, Jeanne Gross and Helen Ross.

Laura ‘Pat’ Loerzel
Laura ‘Pat’ Loerzel, age 61, of Nisswa, MN, died June 28, 1998, at her home.
Funeral services were held July 1 at St. Christopher’s Catholic Church in Nisswa with Fr. Mark Coen officiating. Burial was at the Lake Edwards Cemetery in Lake Edwards Township.
Pat was born on May 1, 1937, in Princeton, MN, to Robert and Linnie M. (Curtis) King. She was a member of St. Christopher’s Catholic Church in Nisswa.
Survivors include two sons and girlfriends, James Katzenberger and Linda Hoff of Burnsville, MN, Bradley Katzenberger and Dorothy Graves of Little Falls, MN; stepsons and stepdaughter-in-law, Carl Loerzel of Atlanta, Ga, Randy and Gail Loerzel of Redwood Falls, MN; daughters and sons-in-law, Debra (Katzenberger) and Tim Iverson of Clayton, WI, Kimberly (Katzenberger, Allord) and Clarence Welle of Lastrup, MN, Tracy (Loerzel) and Dan Carner of Crosby, MN, Lori (Loerzel) and Craig Stowell of Coon Rapids, MN; stepdaughter and son-in-law, Wanda (Loerzel) and Tom Pawlowski of Prior Lake, MN; three brothers, Merton “Bob” King of Browerville, MN, Donald King of Nevis, Dwight King of Brainerd, MN; five sisters, Lois Petersen of Merrifield, MN, Wanda Zumbrunnen of Brainerd, Elsie Pickar of Menahga, MN, Sadie LaFlex of Nisswa, MN, Joyce Smith of Backus, MN; thirty-one grandchildren and eighteen great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; first husband Duane Katzenberger, second husband Carl Loerzel, one sister Alice Smith and two brothers,Claude and Milton King.
Lawrence Rutz
Lawrence Rutz, age 80, a resident of Little Falls, MN, formerly of Flensburg, MN, died June 22, 1998, at his home.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held June 27, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Flensburg, with Father Anthony Kroll officiating. Burial was in the parish cemetery.
Larry was born August 27, 1917, in Flensburg, to Stephen and Valaria (Vinie) Rutz. He was the 15th child in a family of 21 children. He was baptized at Sacred Heart Church and attended country school in Flensburg. As a young man he worked at the Gooseberry Falls Civilian Conservation Camp (CCC) in the construction of Gooseberry Falls State Park. During the war years he was deferred from active duty as six brothers were already serving in the armed forces. Lawrence remained at home to help keep the homestead going. In the years following, he spent his summers working in the harvest fields in western Minnesota.He married Stella Stoltman on September 24, 1946, at Sacred Heart Church. Together they farmed the Rutz family farm that he grew up on south of Flensburg. Larry was a member of the Flensburg Volunteer Fire Department, served as a Special Deputy in Morrison County, worked as a security officer, served as caretaker at Sacred Heart Cemetery and was an usher at Sacred Heart Church until his retirement in 1970 Larry enjoyed working the land he grew up on and loved to raise animals. After retirement from farming in 1983, he switched his love from raising crops to gardening and raising roses. He enjoyed sharing his produce with friends and relatives until the day he passed away.
Survivors include, son, Ronald and wife Beverly of Monticello, MN; daughter, Barbara Rebischke of Little Falls; four grandchildren, special friend, Agnes Hegna of Sauk Rapids, MN; six brothers, Jerome of Minneapolis, MN, Florian of Greene, IA, Leonard of Little Falls, Edward, Raymond, and Julius of Minneapolis, MN, along with 50 nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Stella; daughter, Patricia; son, Mark; 14 brothers and sisters.
Honorary casketbearers were Jerome, Florian, Leonard, Edward, Raymond and Julius Rutz.
Casketbearers were Bradley, Jason, Ryan, John and Paul Rutz, and Christopher Hildebrant.
