George Happke
George Happke, age 85, a resident of Pierz, MN, formerly of Lastrup, MN, died September 29, 1998, at his home.
Funeral services were October 2 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Pierz with Rev. Ken Brenny and Rev. Roger Thoennes officiating. Burial was in the St. John’s Catholic Cemetery in Lastrup.
George Happke was born November 30, 1912, in Pierz, to the late Robert and Christine ‘Boser’ Happke. He grew up in the Pierz area and attended District #92 school. After completing his schooling, George farmed in the Lastrup area. George was united in marriage to Alvina Tembruell in 1936 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Pierz. Alvina died on November 28, 1954. George was united in marriage to Florence Bossus on June 9, 1962, at St. Francis Catholic Church in Brainerd, MN. The couple farmed two miles North of Pierz. George enjoyed gardening, woodworking, music and farming. He was very devoted to his family and enjoyed visiting friends. George was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Pierz.
Survivors include his wife, Florence B. Happke; sons, Bob Happke and wife Shirley of Lastrup, Alvin Happke of Mahtomedi, MN and David Happke of Rice, MN; daughters, Barb Bohrer and husband Ed of St. Paul, MN, Sylvia Gilson and husband David of Brainerd, Renee Litke and husband Larry of Pierz, Marie Flicker and husband Marn of Monticello, MN, Bea Gau and husband Collin of St. Cloud, MN; brothers, Al Happke of Pierz and Herbert Happke of Dearborn, MI; sisters, Angeline Dahmen and husband Mike of Pierz and Rita Tembruell of Plymouth, MN; 29 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Alvina, five brothers, five sisters and a great-grandson, Brandon Happke.
Honorary pallbearers were John Walz, Bill Nagel, Alcuin Faust, Bob Toffefson, Don Tollefson and Ken Dahmen.
Pallbearers were Keith Happke, Jeff Kruschek, Tom Flicker, Travis Gau, Chris Happke and Kurt Litke.
Kathleen Rajkowski
Kathleen M. Rajkowski, age 54, a resident of Foley, MN, died September 6, 1998, at St. Cloud Hospital, after a 10-1/2 year battle with breast cancer.
Funeral services were held September 9 at SS. Peter & Paul’s Catholic Church in Gilman, MN, with the Rev. Virgil Helmin officiating. Burial was in the Assumption Mausoleums, St. Cloud, MN.
Kathleen was born June 7, 1944, in Foley to Daniel J. and Dorothy (Lepinski) Malikowski. She married Clarence Rajkowski on June 3, 1964, at SS. Peter & Paul’s Catholic Church, Gilman. She was a lifelong resident of the Foley area. She was a member of the Rosary Society and the Benton County Homemakers Association.
Survivors include her husband, Clarence of Foley; sons and daughter, Dan of Arcadia, WI, Audra and Tim Popp of Royalton, MN, Curtis and Karla of Foley, Jason of St. Cloud and Bradley and Eric at home; grandmother, Mary Lepinski of Sauk Rapids, MN; four grandchildren; brothers and sisters, Patrick Malikowski of Sartell, MN, Rodger Malikowski of Crystal, MN, Carol Pappenfus of Gilman, Christine Jurek of Foley, Dennis Malikowski of Foley, Clifford Malikowski of St. Cloud, Janet (Malikowski) Puchalla of St. Cloud, Vern Malikowski of Rice, MN, Kevin Malikowski of Sauk Rapids, Susan Hess of Sartell, Duane Malikowski of Richfield, MN, Rachelle Gully of St. Joseph, MN, and Roxanne Moon of Sartell.
She was preceded in death by her father, Daniel Malikowski in 1990; brother, Arthur Malikowski; grandparents, Joseph and Clara Malikowski and Charles Lepinski.
Pallbearers were Charles Malikowski, Reggie Malikowski, Kim Gummert, Sue Bechtold, David Mertz, Shawn Bemboom, Terry Mertz, Shawn Brenny and Aaron Brenny.
Shirley Smolnik
Shirley Ann “Cookie” Smolnik died September 5, 1998, at her home in Royalton, MN, after a short illness with cancer.
Memorial services were held September 9 at Peace United Church of Christ in St. Cloud, MN.
Shirley was born May 26, 1942, in Sauk Rapids, MN, toJames and Martha (Doeden) Warrick. She married Richard Smolnik on May 3, 1969. They lived in Sauk Rapids until moving their family to Royalton in 1979. Cookie was a homemaker and also worked at Oakridge Homes in Little Falls, MN, from 1991 until 1997. She enjoyed spending time raising animals on their hobby farm, gardening and making live enjoyable for others. She will forever be remembered for her kindness and generosity to all living things.
Survivors include her husband, Dick of Royalton; children and spouses, Kim Smolnik of Daytona Beach, FL, Todd Smolnik and wife Kathy of Rice, MN, Tami Kuebelbeck and husband Marc ofAnchorage, AK, Brenda Holthaus and husband Loren of Becker, MN, and Carrie Koelbl and husband Chris of Royalton; grandchildren, Amber, Tyler and Brett Smolnik and Kelsey and Brandon Holthaus; brothers and sisters, James Warrick of Sauk Rapids, Beverly Justin of Brainerd, MN, and Eugene Warrick, Lorraine Penly and Delores Wainright, all of Sauk Rapids.
She was preceded in death by her parents, James Ernest Warrick in 1957 and Martha (Doeden) Warrick in 1993.
Glenda Hayes
Glenda Hayes, age 46, a resident of Hillman, MN, died suddenly at her home September 5, 1998. Cause of death is believed to be a heart attack.
Funeral services were held September 9 at the Lakeview Community Church in Hillman with Rev. David Gouldin and Rev. Thomas Franklin officiating. Music was provided by Janelle Holmquist, Jack and Polly Hayes, Marilyn Hayes-Phillips, Mari Bailey and Arnold Wannebo. Burial was at the Lakeview Community Cemetery in Hillman.
Glenda was born May 12, 1952, in Brainerd, MN, the daughter of Verdelle and Glen Goble. She lived to young adulthood in the Brainerd area, was married to Ron Kowalczyk and became a young mother with the birth of Suzi. This marriage ended in divorce. On November 4, 1978, she married Rod Hayes, a native of the Hillman area. Rod adopted Suzi, and together they adopted Cassie September 7, 1982. Glenda was a talented quilter and craftswoman and owned the Hayes Corner Quilt Shop near Hillman. She was an active member of Lakeview Community Church where she served on the board as Sunday School superintendent. Glenda was the township clerk for Richardson Township and active in the Lions Club. She also babysat daily for Vanessa, age two and one-half years, her only grandchild, on whom she doted. Glenda leaves a gigantic gap in many lives. She was a loving wife and mother and a strong Christian who lived out her beliefs in good and kindly words and deeds. She was a pillar of emotional strength for so many friends and family members. At Rod and Glenda’s farm, the coffee pot was always on and people knew they were welcome to drop in for a while and talk.
Survivors include her husband, Dr. Rod Hayes; daughters, Cassie and Suzi; son-in-law, T.J. Block; granddaughter, Vanessa; mother, Verdelle Goble; sister, JoLeta Buss and husband Dick and their children, Rachael and Patrick; brothers, Kent, his wife Anne and children, Ben, Andy and Beth; and Marlon and wife Kathy and niece, Dawn; parents-in-law, Rex Hayes family (Lois, Rex, Jack and Polly Hayes, Marilyn and Lem Phillips and Barbara Bailey and her children, Mari, Anne and John) and many cousins and aunts and uncles.
She was preceded in death by her father, Glen in 1991.
Casketbearers were Herbert, Ronald, Curtis and Russell Wall, Paul and Bruce Olson. Honorary casketbearers were Roger, Marlon and Kent Goble, Jack Hayes, T.J. Block and Dick Buss.
Letha Hamer
Letha Hamer, age 81, a resident of Pierz, MN, died August 2, 1998, at herresidence.
There were no services.
Letha was born January 15, 1917, at Semmes, AL, to Andrew and Melvina (Parker) Mills. She will be remembered for her love and caring for all people. An expert seamstress, over 100 family and friends received from her individually designed and costumed soft sculpture dolls, lovingly called “Nana Dolls.” These will be handed down, along with her legacy of love and caring, for generations to come.
Survivors include three daughters, Hope, Faith and Charity; son, Lewis; 16 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents and husband, Lewis.
Miroslav Stojanovic and Shari Stojanovic
Dr. Miroslav “Mikki” Stojanovic, age 33, and Shari Stojanovic, age 26, of Grand Rapids, MI, formerly of Belgrade, Serbia and Staples, MN, died unexpectedly on their fourth wedding anniversary September 3, 1998, in Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery by Camp Ripley, MN. Military rites were conducted by American Legion Post 255.
William was born February 18, 1922, in Royalton, MN, to Jacob and Anna (Galliher) Keehr. William was a boiler operator for the Hastings Veterans Hospital until his retirement. He married Eileen Miller on April 8, 1947. He was a World War II Naval veteran, a member of the VFW and of the American Legion of Little Falls, MN. He was also a member of the Assemblies of God Church in Brainerd.
Survivors include his wife, Eileen of Ft. Ripley; two sons, William B. Keehr of Marshall, MN, and Paul J. Keehr of Delhi, NY; two daughters, Lynn Alvar of Little Falls and Esther Axmark of Fair Grove, MO; two brothers, Lee Keehr of Pierz, MN, and Alan Keehr of Little Falls; one sister, Marie Ryan of Pierz and 12 grandchildren.
