Elmira Susalski
Elmira Susalski, age 77, a resident of Brainerd, MN, died January 26,1999, at St. Joseph’sHospital in Brainerd.
Mass of Christian Burial was January 29 at Holy Family Catholic Church in Belle Prairie, MN, with Father Harold Kost officiating. Burial was at St. Adalbert Catholic Cemetery in Little Falls, MN.
Elmira was born May 24, 1921, to Anton and Marcelene (Le May) Smith in Little Falls. She attended St. Aloyious and Little Falls public schools. Elmira was united in marriage to Louis Susalski on September 19, 1938 in Little Falls. She worked at Munsingwear and Woolworth, Co. Elmira enjoyed picnics, fishing, reading, Bingo, and playing cards. Louis passed away July 16, 1997. Elmira was a resident at the Woodland Good Samaritan Village for the last eight years. She was also a member of the Little Falls V.F.W. Auxiliary.
Survivors include her son Gerald Susalski and wife Mary Ann of Little Falls; daughters, Mrs. Henry (Maureen) Stumpf of Pierz, MN, Mrs. Dennis (Margaret) Welch of Fort Ripley, MN, LoisPauly of Little Falls, Mrs. David (Nancy) Lupro of Cornelius, OR, and Mrs. Greg (Denise) Luberts of Little Falls; sister Corinne Thelander of Placentia, CA; and brother Earl Smith of Louisville, KY; 21 grandchildren and 29 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband Louis in July, 1997, one grandson, and one great-grandson.
Casketbearers were Jamie Luberts, Jeremy Luberts, Mike Stumpf, Louie Stumpf, Pat Stumpf, Danny Stumpf, Jason Pauly and John Pauly.
Henry Larson
Henry Clarence Larson, founder and President of Chapel of the Highlands Funeral Home in Millbrae, CA, passed away in Burlingame, CA January 17, 1999.
A Funeral Mass was celebrated at Saint Dunstan’s Catholic Church in Millbrae on January 22. Committal was at Holy Cross Catholic Cemetery in Colma.
He was the beloved husband of the late Mabel Alice Larson. He was born on his parents’ farm (which is now Camp Ripley in Green Prairie Township, outside Little Falls, MN, on May 2, 1913. He was the youngest of three brothers, the late Frank Larson and the late Ernest Larson and one sister the late Bertha Olson. He was a graduate of Little Falls High School. He moved to California Funeral Directors Association member of the Elk Lodge in San Mateo; former member of the San Bruno Moose Lodge and Millbrae Toastmasters; the San Mateo County Deputy Coroner since 1954; an alumnus of the University of Minnesota, Minnesota School of Nursing. She was a nursing supervisor at Minneapolis General Hospital where she gave care to patients with polio. Doris graduated from the Sister Kenny Institute of Physical Therapy in Minneapolis, MN, and worked there until 1955. She also nursed at Shriner’s Hospital for Crippled Children in Minneapolis, King County Hospital in Seattle, WA, and at the Honeywell plant in Minneapolis. Doris was united in marriage to Berner Tofsly on September 27, 1958, in Minneapolis and they had since resided and farmed north of McIntosh. During that time, Doris also worked at Pioneer Memorial Care Center in Erskine and at the hospital in Fosston. She was a member of the W.E.L.C.A. and Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in McIntosh.
Survivors include her husband, Berner; two children, Julie Quinn and husband Mike and John and wife Ashley, all of McIntosh; four grandchildren, Julia, Terry, Jacquelyn and Christopher; three brothers, Danford and wife Olga of Little Falls, MN, Edward and wife Erthel of Edina, MN, and Warren and wife Agnes of Johnstown, IA; one sister, Florence Schmidt and husband Thomas of Miami, FL; sister-in-law, Evelyn Radke of Fargo and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her parents; an infant brother; one sister, Verna Wallace and one niece.
Pallbearers were Larry Swenson, Mark Swenson, Robert Swenson, James Swenson, Richard Swenson and David Monk.
Honorary pallbearers were all of Doris’ relatives and friends.
Brian Ross Meldaus
Brian Ross Meldaus, age 44, a resident of Burtrum, MN, died October 27, 1998, as a result of an accident.
A Memorial Service will be held at a later date.
Brian was born October 24, 1954, in Minneapolis, MN, to Raymond and Elizabeth (Buchholz) Meldaus. Brian honorably served in the U.S. Navy from 1972-1975 and worked as Chief Engineer at Hennepin Paper Company in Little Falls, MN. Brian touched so many lives with his love, laughter and music, and will always be remembered through these special gifts.
Brian will be deeply missed by wife and best friend, Robin (Bolstrom) of Burtrum; sons Ry and Matthew; parents Raymond and Tootie Meldaus of Grey Eagle, MN; brother Jeff and wife Carol of Minneapolis; sister Susette of Maple Grove, MN; parents-in-law Lee and Maxine Bolstrom of Burtrum; brother-in-law Chuck and wife Laura of Northfield, MN; and many other family and friends.
Floyd Griffith
Floyd Griffith, age 85, a resident of Motley, MN, died November 4, 1998, at the Greater Staples Care Center.
Funeral services were held November 6 at the Motley Methodist Church, with Reverend Dan Almquist officiating. Burial followed in the Motley Public Cemetery.
Floyd was born on August 9, 1913, in Pillager, MN, to Edward and Lettie (Rice) Griffith. He grew up north of Motley and attended country school. For most of his working years he drove truck. On May 25, 1940, he married Hazel Tidrick of Brainerd, MN. Together they moved to Preston of Minnetonka, MN, Delrita Rudnitski of St. Cloud, MN, and Leeann and Amde-Michael Habte of Shoreview, MN; sister, Susie Rye of Minneota, MN; brother, Matthew Selinsky of Minneapolis, MN; 12 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, John in May, 1968 and brothers, Clarence, Arnold and Carl.
George Thomson
George E. Thomson, age 83, a resident of Motley, MN, died January 5, 1999, at the Greater Staples Hospital.
A Massof Christian Burial was held January 9 at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Motley with Fr. Robert Landsberger officiating. Burial followed in the Motley Public Cemetery.
Erma Tufte
Erma M. Tufte, age 83, a resident of Little Falls, MN, died December 3, 1998, at St. Otto’s Care Center in Little Falls.
Services have been scheduled for Sunday, December 6, at the Brenny Funeral Chapel in Randall, with Reverend Terry Stumbo officiating. Burial will follow at the Scandia Valley Cemetery.
Erma Marie Tufte was born July 12, 1915, in Cooperstown, ND, to the late Charles and Margaret (Hammeral) Louden. She grew up and attended school in Cooperstown. As a young lady, she moved to the Twin Cities with her sister, Gladys. She married A.M. “Andy” Tufte in 1936. She worked at National T, Northland Ice Cream, and the Thunderbird Hotel, where she was the head housekeeper for many years. The couple raised their family in Minneapolis, and, in 1964, purchased a cabin on Lake Alexander in the Cushing, MN area. There they spent their summers with their children. In 1992, Erma moved to her home in Little Falls, but she spent all of her free time at the lake and was known widely as a great fisherwoman. In May of this year, she moved into St. Otto’s Care Center in Little Falls.
Survivors include one son, Dave Tufte of Cushing; one daughter, Janice Anderson of Cushing; two sisters, Shirley Hebert of Spokane, WA and Vannis Painter of Lincoln City, OR; three grandchildren, Cathy Holden and Jesse and Molly Anderson; and two great-grandchildren, Mathew and Jacob Holden. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, six brothers, and two sisters.
Joyce Tretter
Joyce Elaine Tretter, age 55, a resident of Onamia, MN,died at her home on December 1, 1998.
Funeral services were held at the Holy Cross Catholic Church in Onamia on December 3 with Father Ray Steffes officiating.
Joyce was born in Minneapolis, MN, on November 8, 1943, to Berthel and Erma (Romans) Johnson. She grew up in the Milaca, MN, area and graduated from Milaca High School. She was united in marriage to Duane Tretter on May 8, 1962, at the Little Flower Mission near Vineland. The couple has resided in the Onamia area for nearly 30 years. Joyce will always be remembered for the many lives she touched through her day care, as well as raising extended family members. Joyce enjoyed making cakes, playing cards, collecting dolls and adoring her grandchildren and dog, Charlie.
Survivors include her husband, Duane of Onamia; daughters, Lori and husband Bob of Brainerd, MN, Denise of Osseo, MN, and Kim and husband Tony of Crosby, MN; twin sons, Richard and wife Wendy and Adam and wife Darlene, both of Hillman, MN; grandchildren, Ryan, Tiffany, Brittany, Michael, Emily, Danielle, Abbey, Krista, Rachel, Claire and Rebecca; sisters, Jani Mains and husband Dick of Princeton, MN, and Alice and husband Don of Bock; brother, Carl and wife Barb of California; half sisters, Elaine Baker and husband Tom of Kirkhoven, MN, and Linda Kochler and husband Doug of Hanska, MN; step father, Bob Eckhardt of Ogilvie, MN, and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Berthel and Erma, and brother, Wayne.
Casketbearers included Jim Tretter, Harry Tretter, Bruce Tretter, David Tretter, Barney Kowalzek, Del Gave and Jeff Falconer. Honorary casketbearers were George and Marie Betlach, Ross and Donna Kutil, Bill and Jennie Miller, Jim and Mary Ann Miller and Wally and Margaret Young.
Betty Ahlquist
Betty Jeanne (Cook) Ahlquist, age 69, a resident of Minneapolis, MN, and a graduate of Little Falls High School, died January 30, 1999, at Hennepin County Medical Center.
Survivors include her children, Jeff, Veronica Hicks (David) and Jerry (Michelle Marcott); grandchildren, Chad Hicks, Ryan Hicks and Matthew Ahlquist and her longtime companion, Herman Wendel, all of Minneapolis.
Roy Kasella
Roy Kasella, age 83, a resident of Little Falls, MN, died January 27, 1999, at St. Gabriel’s Hospital in Little Falls.
Funeral services were held January 30 at the Shelley Funeral Chapel in Little Falls with Father Leroy Kremer officiating. Interment was in St. Stanislaus Cemetery in Bowlus, MN.
Roy was born August 18, 1915, in Bowlus to the late Francis Kasella. He grew up in the Bowlus area where he attended school through the eighth grade. He moved to Morrill, MN, where he farmed for a number of years and then moved to Little Falls. While living in Little Falls, Roy worked at the Little Falls Theatre. He was a resident of the Pine Grove Manor in Little Falls. Roy loved to fish, cook, play bingo and take trips to the casino. Roy was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Little Falls and the Knights of Columbus.
Survivors include his longtime friend and fishing buddy, Terry Stellmach of Little Falls.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Francis Kasella.
Pallbearers were Maxine Bauer, Bill Moeller, Terry Stellmach, Herb Foss, Jack Kiefer and Roger Schraut.
