Donald Schreiber
Donald Schreiber, age 78, a resident of Little Falls, MN, died May 5, 1999, at his residence.
Mass of Christian Burial was held May 10 at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Little Falls with Father Athamase O.S.B. officiating and Father Leroy Kremer concelebrating. Burial was at Our Lady of Lourdes parish cemetery. Military rites were provided by Little Falls American Legion Post 46 and Little Falls VFW Post 1112.
Donald was born on September 18, 1920, to Julius and Pauline (Zurowski) Schreiber in Little Falls. He graduated from Little Falls High School. Donald served three years in the United States Navy, being honorable discharged in 1946. He worked for many years alongside his father, Julius, in their “pool hall” which was located on the west side of Little Falls. Donald loved sports and for a short while, he could be seen on the mound pitching for a Little Falls baseball team. Donald was united in marriage to Geneva Fuchs on July 7, 1962, at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church. He was employed at St. Gabriel’s Hospital as storeroom manager until his retirement in 1982. Donald was a member ofthe American Legion and VFW Post 1112 and also a lifetime member of the Knights of Columbus. He will always be remembered for his strong determination to conquer any health problem he faced, keeping his strong faith, and devotion to his wonderful wife “Gen.”
Survivors include his wife, Gen, of Little Falls; sisters, Bernadine Motsko of Little Falls and Joanne Casey of New Hope, MN; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Richard Schreiber.
Casketbearers were Dan Kalis, David Motsko, Dennis Schreiber, Adam Czech, Jason Asselin and Kenneth Schriber.
Shirlee Heins
Shirlee Mae Heins, age 70, a resident of Upsala, MN, died May 4, 1999, at her home.
Funeral services were held May 8 at Gethsemane Lutheran Church in Upsala with Rev. Leland Johnson officiating. Burial was in the Minnesota in Minneapolis, MN. The couple resided in Birmingham, AL, for 17 years. Shirlee graduated from Bessemer Technical College in Bessemer, AL, as a licensed practical nurse in 1979. She worked at the Birmington Eye Foundation Hospital and the Gardendale TX; daughters, Marsha Frommer and husband John of Rockton, IL, Sharon Hudson and husband Greg of Mt. Olive, AL, and Janice Buroughs and husband Tommy of Birmingham; grandchildren, Matthew Heins, Meredith and Andrew Frommer and Abraham and Ezra Hudson; stepbrother, Bill Osberg of Upsala; aunt, Mayme Johnson of Alexandria, MN; eight brothers-in-law, eight sisters-in-law and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Nellie in 1944; stepmother, Anna in 1982; father, Francis in 1988 and many aunts and uncles.
Honorary casketbearers were Marlee Holmen, Marlys Juhnke, Lorraine Johnson, Esther Lillestrand, Lorna Koehn, Nancy Peterson and Elsie Nelson.
Pallbearers were Dale, John, Paul, Ron and Russell Heins and Alan Bistodeau.
H. Bertille Kucera
H. Bertille Kucera of Walnut Lake Township, MN, passed away April 29, 1999, in New Brighton, MN, at the age of 69.
Funeral services were held May 3 at St. Lawrence Catholic Church in Faribault, MN, with the Reverend Richard Jeub as celebrant. Interment was at the St. Lawrence Cemetery in Faribault.
H. Bertille Kucera was born April 4, 1930, to Edward and Hazel (Dumbeck) Schmidt in Walnut Lake Township, Faribault County. She graduated from Little Falls High School in 1948. She married George Kureca May 2, 1952, in Harding, MN, at Holy Cross Catholic Church. She was preceded in death by her parents, two nieces and two nephews. She spent most of her married life by Faribault. She did childcare for many children. She enjoyed them all until she went blind.
Survivors include her husband in Faribault; two daughters, Georgene in Blaine, MN, and Theresa in Faribault; two grandsons, Alexander and Mathew in Blaine; sisters Julia Zyvoloski and Edes Gerwing of Little Falls, MN; brothers Delbert Schmidt of Roseville, MN, Delwin Schmidt of St. Paul, MN, Avit Schmidt of Pierz, MN; and Roger Schmidt of Eagan, MN.
Casketbearers were Dan Schmidt, Stephen Zyvoloski, Brian Andrist, Dave Schmidt, Bill Springer and Arnie Gillispie.
Alvera Schandel
Alvera E. Schandel, age 74, a resident of Little Falls, MN, formerly of Grey Eagle, MN, died May 7, 1999, at St. Otto’s Care Center in Little Falls.
Services were held May 10 at St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Grey Eagle with the Rev. John Grein officiating. Burial followed in Lakeview Cemetery, Grey Eagle.
Alvera was born May 5, 1925, in Round Prairie Township, Todd County, MN, to John F. and Amanda (Farber) Zellmann. She married Arthur Schandel on May 22, 1946, in Grey Eagle and they farmed near Moose Lake by Swanville, MN, and then moved to West Fargo, ND where they owned and operated West Fargo Concrete Products. After Arthur’s death on December 13, 1976, Alvera resided near Grey Eagle for a few years and had been at St. Otto’s Care Center in Little Falls since November 1987.
Survivors include brother and sisters, Ervin Zellmann of Grey Eagle, Janet Sufka and husband Ray of Grey Eagle and Marlene Birkholz and her husband Leonard of Blaine, MN.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Arthur on December 13, 1976; brothers and sisters, Eugene and John Zellmann and Lois and June Decker.
Casketbearers were Charles and Kyle Birkholz, Steve Holm, Ricky and Paul Weir and Robert Feierabend.
William Litke
William “Bill” Litke, age 81, a resident of Harding, MN, died May 2, 1999, at his residence in Harding.
Mass of Christian Burial was May 5 at Holy Cross Catholic Church in Harding with Father Roger Thoennes officiating. Burial was in the parish cemetery.
William was born January 21, 1918, to Flaudy and Catherine (Kachmarzinski) Litke in Genola, MN. William was united in marriage to Caroline Pulak on November 25, 1943, in Harding. He farmed in the Harding area all his life. He was a caretaker for Holy Cross Cemetery in Harding. William enjoyed his children, grandchildren, baseball, ice fishing, horseshoe throwing and deer hunting.
Survivors include his wife, Caroline Litke of Harding; sons, Robert Litke and wife Elaine of Burnsville, MN, Daniel Litke and wife Elaine of Onamia, MN, and Charles Litke and wife Ann of Maple Grove, MN; daughter, Kate Krych and husband Lonny of Harding; brothers, Leo Litke of Harding and John Litke of Pierz, MN; sister, Alice Isle of Brainerd, MN, and seven grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Roger; brother, Alfred and sisters, Rose Solinger, Clara Otten and Helen Moser.
Casketbearers were Pete Hoheisel, Wes Young, Roy Knopik, Larry Litke, Roger Pulak and Paul Solinger.
Rosemary Maciej
Rosemary Maciej, (Mrs. Leonard), age 62, a resident of Bowlus, MN, died May 12, 1999, at St. Gabriel’s Hospital in Little Falls, MN.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held May 15 at St. Edward’s Catholic Church in Elmdale, MN, with the Rev. Gregory Mastey officiating. Burial will be held May 17 at 9:30 a.m. at the Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery near Camp Ripley.
Ann Czeckwas born October 30, 1919, in Savanna, IL, to John and Marian (Zubalik) Sramek. She married William J. Czeck on July 17, 1943, in Elmer, MN. She was a member of St. Stanislaus Catholic Church in Bowlus and a member of the Rosary Altar Society. She wasa resident of Bowlus for 53 years where she and her husband farmed for 31 years. She was also employed at Minaco Lens and Index-53 in St. Stephen, MN, for 17 years.
Survivors include her husband William and family: Rudy and Bernice (Czeck) Gerads of Avon, MN, Elaine (Czeck) Sura of Apache Junction, AZ, Leo “Fuzzy” and Barb Czeck of Bowlus, Allan “Shorty” Czeck, Gary and RoseAnn Czeck of Bowlus, Annie Czeck and fiancé Tom Fellegy of Royalton, MN, John and Rita (Czeck) Panek of Bowlus, Mary Lou (Czeck) Nelson of Little Falls,MN, Tom Nelson of St. Cloud, MN,Bill (Snuffy) and Cheryl Czeck of Albany, MN, Philip “Greene” and Jolie Czeck of Royalton and former daughter-in-law Sandy Koecher Merrifield and husband Rich; 30 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren; and, brothers Frank of Duluth, MN, and Joe of Carlton, MN.
She was preceded in death by a son Richard who died in 1982, an infant brother John and son-in-law, Jim Sura.
Father Anthony J. Salzbrunn O.S.C.
Father Anthony J., Salzbrunn O.S.C., age 71, of the Crosier Fathers and Brothers Province of Shoreview, MN, died May 12, 1999.
Mass of Christian Burial was held at St. Odilia’s Catholic Church in Shoreview on May 16. Interment was at Crosier Cemetery in Onamia, MN.
Originally from Flensburg, MN, Father Salzbrunn entered the Crosier Order in 1947, and was ordained in 1952. He served as secretary to the Vicar General, as a teacher and spiritual director at Crosier Seminary, Onamia, and in pastoral service to many parishes: Holy Family, Grand Forks, ND; St. Odilia, Shoreview, MN; St. Alphonse, Langdon, ND, St. Paul’s,Ham Lake, MN, St. Peter’s, Dumont, MN, St. Patrick’s, Collins MN, and Ave Maria, Wheaton, MN.
