Ruth was born at Buxton, N.D., on Oct. 30, 1927, the daughter of Robert and Frances Moss. She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith and graduated from Buxton High School in 1945. Her favorite high school activities included playing basketball, and reading and writing poetry, which became a lifelong enjoyment. Ruth went on to attend Moorhead State Teachers College in Moorhead, receiving her bachelor's degree in 1949. She then taught for a year at Kensal, and a year at Dazey, both in Minnesota Technical College in Crookston, now known as the University of Texas, on Sept. 21, 1927, the daughter of Catarino and Angela (Lozano) Dominguez. She was baptized and confirmed in the Catholic faith and lived in several communities in Minnesota for part of the year and then returning to Minnesota and part in Minnesota, Crookston, before her retirement in 1991. Jesse passed away on December 30, 1985.
Soon after her retirement Ramona started a store in her home to have something to do with all her energy and also to provide a place for old and new friends to gather. As she became ill with cancer she said many times that it was her customers who gave her the strength to keep going. Ramona was an avid collector of hummingbirds and salt and pepper shakers, and she enjoyed flower gardening and listening to Mexican music. But cooking was where her star shined its brightest. Ramona didn't just like to cook - she loved to cook! There was always a genuine feeling of welcome and warmth when visiting her home, and if you left hungry it was definitely your fault, not hers. Ramona adored her family and they returned that love many times over as they all cared for her in her home during her final illness. She will be truly missed and very lovingly remembered by them all, as well as her many, many friends.
Loving family members include three daughters and a son-in-law, Eva Mendez and Raquel Hartley, both of Crookston, and Alice and Rod Brown of O'Fallon, Ill.; five sons and a daughter-in-law, Ruben and Gail Mendez of Hawley, Vincent Mendez and Raymond Mendez, both of Maui, Hawaii, Ken Mendez of Crookston, and Paul Mendez of Minneapolis; 16 grandchildren, including two granddaughters lovingly raised by Ramona, Ramona Renee Maffei of Beaver Creek, Texas, Juana and Paul Leon of Tucson, Ariz., and Hope Settles of Melbourne, Fla.; and many nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
Besides her husband, Jesse, Ramona was preceded in death by her parents; a son, Angel Mendez; a daughter, Diane Hilterbrand; and a brother, Manuel Dominguez.
