Lorene A. Summerskill
May 18th, 2004

Lorene A. Summerskill, 76, of Warsaw, passed away Tuesday evening, May 18, 2004, at her home.

She was born on September 20, 1927, in Grimes, Iowa, the daughter of Eugene and Charlotte Peacock Wineland.

She grew up in the Grimes area, where she graduated from high school. She moved to the Kansas City area, where she was employed at Kline’s Department Store for several years.

In April of 1960, she was united in marriage to Gordon Summerskill, where they made there home in Raytown, Missouri. Lorene was a devoted wife and mother to her two lovely daughters.

In 1992, they moved to the Warsaw area were Lorene was active in the Bib Club. She enjoyed the outdoors, where she spent a great deal of time gardening. She was also an avid genealogist.

Lorene is preceded in death by her parents and one sister, Delores Carr.

She is survived by her husband, Gordon, of the home, two daughters, Janene Chandler, and her husband, Lloyd, and Melissa Roth and her husband Curtis, all of Lee Summit, Missouri. Three granddaughters, three grandsons, and one great-grandson.

Funeral services for Lorene A. Summerskill, will be held at 11:00 A.M., Friday, May 21, 2004, at the Reser Funeral Home in Warsaw, with Rev. Bill Hix, officiating. Visitation will be held from 10:00 to 11:00 A.M. on Friday. Burial will be in the National Cemetery in Warsaw.

Johnnie W. Hensley
May 17th, 2004

John W. Hensley, age 60, of Warsaw, passed away Monday evening, May 17, at the Golden Valley Memorial Hospital in Clinton.

He was born in Warsaw, on June 1, 1943, the son of Clarence and Myrtle Hammond Hensley.

He was raised around Warsaw, and when he was around 15 years old, the family moved to the Kansas City area. He started working around the car business and eventually operated his own lot in Independence for many years.

He was preceded in death by his father in 1982 and one brother, Steve, in 1965.

He is survived by his mother, Myrtle, of Warsaw, four daughters, Connie, Sandra and Johnna, of Kansas City, Missouri, and Susan of the state of Iowa, one brother, Billy, and his wife Vickie, of Warsaw, two grandchildren, other relatives and friends.

Graveside services and interment for John W. Hensley will be held on Thursday, May 20, 2004, at 2:00 P.M. at the Turkey Creek Chapel Cemetery near Warsaw.

Thelma Louise Cheatham
May 16th, 2004

Thelma Louise Cheatham age 73, passed away Saturday, May 15, 2004, at the Lincoln Community Nursing, in Lincoln, Missouri.

She was born on August 8, 1930 in Stillwater, Oklahoma, the daughter of Huston & Elizabeth Milton Temple.

She grew up in Stillwater, Oklahoma, and after graduating high school, she attended Nursing School at Sparks Memorial Hospital, in Fort Smith, Arkansas, and became a Registered Nurse.

On January 2, 1954, she was united marriage to Bill Cheatham in Stillwater, Oklahoma. After marriage, they made their home in Stillwater, for a few years. Her husband, Bill worked for the Corp. of Engineer’s for many years, so they traveled and lived in many parts of the United States, moving to Warsaw, Missouri in 1979.

Thelma enjoyed many things, but loved bird watching, working in the garden, and reading books. She also was a homemaker, and loved to be with her family.

She was preceded in death by her parents, 3 sisters and 3 brothers.

Thelma is survived by her husband, Bill of the home; 2 daughters, Jyl Goin and her husband Jack, of Warsaw, Missouri, and Beth Cheatham and her fiancee, Bart Brown, of Clinton, Missouri, 2 sons, Perry Cheatham, of St. Louis, Missouri and James Cheatham, of Derry, New Hampshire, 2 grandchildren, James Trujillo and Amanda Trujillo both of Sedalia, Missouri. Also surviving is one sister Edith Davis, of Stillwater, Oklahoma, and one brother George Temple, of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, nieces and nephews and other relatives and many friends.

Funeral services for Thelma Louise Cheatham will be held at 11:00 A.M., Wednesday, May 19, 2004 at the Reser Funeral Home, Warsaw, with Bill Runyon, officiating. Burial will be in the Riverside Cemetery in Warsaw. Pallbearers will be Bart Brown, Jack Goin, James Trujillo, Jr. James Trujillo, Sr., Dale Givens and George Whitcomb. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the funeral service.

Charlotte E. DeGhelder
May 16th, 2004

Charlotte DeGhelder, age 73, of Edwards, passed away Sunday, May 16, 2004, at the Golden Valley Memorial Hospital in Clinton.

She was born on December 3, 1930, in Oklahoma, the daughter of John and Orphy Murphy Rummerfield.

At a young age, she moved to Missouri, and graduated from Blue Springs High School.

She was married to William A. DeGhelder and the made their home in Burbank, California. In the early 1960's, they moved to Kansas City, Missouri.

She was employed as a sales clerk for Krigel’s Jewelry Store in downtown Kansas City, for almost 40 years.

She was preceded in death by her husband, William, on August 26, 1989. Shortly following his death, Charlotte moved to Edwards, Missouri.

She is survived by two sons, Bruce DeGhelder of Richhill, Missouri, and Doug DeGhelder of Blue Springs, Missouri, 8 grandchildren, Kadi, Billy, Deanna, Geoffrey, Kelli, Mindy, Heather and Rachel DeGhelder and two great-grandchildren, Kyler and Logan DeGhelder, a brother, Lenny Rummerfield of the state of Michigan, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services for Charlotte DeGhelder will be at 10:00 A.M., Thursday, May 20, 2004, at the Reser Funeral Home, Warsaw. Burial will be in Mossy Cemetery near Edwards, Missouri. Pallbearers will be Chip Drenon, Floyd Greathouse, Randy Reeves, Brant Cross, Eddie Wright, and Danny Kinnisson. Family visitation will be from 6 to 8 P.M., Wednesday evening at the Reser Funeral Home, 101 W. Main Street, Warsaw, MO.

Victor E. Mills
May 15th, 2004

Victor Ellis Mills, age 91, passed away Saturday morning, May 15, 2004, at the Missouri Veterans Home in Warrensburg, Missouri.

He was born in Benton County, Missouri, on May 20, 1912, the son of Art T. and Amy Walthall Mills.

He grew up in the Turkey Creek community near Warsaw. He was inducted into the United States Army on June 18, 1942, serving overseas in North Africa and Europe as a veteran of World War II. He was discharged on October 23, 1945, but reenlisted in the army serving in Japan for two years during the Korean Conflict in ‘51 & ‘52.

On May 21, 1952, he was united in marriage to Mabel Upton in Kansas City. They made their home there and Victor was employed for over thirty years as a welder and mat machine operator for Armco Steel. He retired in the late 1980's.

His wife, Mabel, preceded him in death on December 22, 1997. He has been a resident at the Missouri Veterans Home in Warrensburg since October of 2002.

Victor was an avid gardener and loved to do carpenter work, rebuilding and remodeling his own home and working on many projects for family, neighbors and friends.

He was a member of the Gashland Baptist Church in Gladstone, Missouri. He was a life time member of VFW Post #5894 of Warsaw and American Legion Post # 217 of Warsaw.

He is survived by one brother, Mearl K. Mills, of Harrisonville, Missouri, several nieces and nephews, other relatives and many friends.

Graveside funeral services and Burial will be at 2:30 P.M. Tuesday, May 18, 2004, at the Turkey Creek Chapel Cemetery near Warsaw, with Rev. Sam Hinkle officiating, with Military Rites performed by American Legion Post #217. Visitation will be from 1:00 to 2:00 P.M. Tuesday prior to the services at the Reser Funeral Home in Warsaw.

Myrtle I. Wilson
May 14th, 2004

Myrtle I. Coombs Wilson, age 97, of Warsaw, passed away Friday, May 14, 2004, at Golden Valley Memorial Hospital in Clinton.

She was born on September 29, 1906, at Houston, Arkansas, the daughter of Paul and Mollie Keefer Jones.

At the age of 7 months, her family moved to Mound Valley, Kansas and at the age of 11, they moved to Kansas City, Missouri.

On January 19, 1924, she was married to Joseph Coombs and unto this union, one daughter, Gloria June, was born. Joseph preceded her in death.

On June 20, 1936, she was married to James H. Wilson who survives of the home.

Mrs. Wilson was employed at Unity School of Christianity for twenty-five years. She and her husband, Jim, moved to Mountain Home, Arkansas where they owned and operated a motel for two years. After selling the motel they moved to Forsyth, Missouri and made their home for five years. In 1964, they moved to Benton County, Missouri, and later into Warsaw.

She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Warsaw. She had been active in church circles and the United Methodist Women. She and her husband organized and hosted the Gadabouts of the church for eleven years. She also was a member of the Friendship Club for many years and a member of the V.F.W. Ladies Auxiliary of Gravois Mills since 1974.

She is survived by her husband, Jim, a resident of the Warsaw Health Care Center, a daughter, Gloria Jackson of Raytown, Missouri, a grandson, Sam G. Jackson of Lancaster, California and a granddaughter, Kathy Mendenhall, of Raytown, two great-granddaughters, one great-grandson, and two great-great-grandsons, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services for Myrtle I. Wilson will be at 11:00 A.M., Tuesday, May 18, 2004, at the Reser Funeral Home with Dr. Diana Loomis officiating. Graveside services and Burial will be at Floral Hills Cemetery, Kansas City, Missouri at 2:30 P.M., Tuesday. Family will receive friends an hour prior to the services on Tuesday at the Reser Funeral Home, Warsaw.

Edward L. Cole
May 13th, 2004

Edward Lewis Cole, age 82, beloved husband of Bee Cole, of Warsaw, Missouri, passed away Thursday, May 13, 2004, at the Boone County Regional Hospital in Columbia, Missouri.

Mr. Cole was retired from Security Pacific National Bank in Riverside, California.

Mr. Cole was married to Bee McCracken of Savannah, Missouri, on March 7, 1987. They made their home in Warsaw since February of 1996.

Mr. & Mrs. Cole were both members of the First United Methodist Church of Warsaw.

Mr. Cole was preceded in death by his first wife, Mary Catherine Cole, in 1980.

Besides his wife, he is survived by one son, Larry Cole, of Duklin, Ohio, two daughters, Gloria Jean McGreevy, of Riverside, California, and Patricia Ann Blan, of Miami, Florida, six grandchildren, Adam Cole, Angela Cole, Eric Cole, Stephanie Cole, Robby Blank, and Mary McGreevy, and one great-grandson, Adam Cole, Jr. other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be at 11:00 A.M. Monday, May 17, 2004, at the First United Methodist Church in Warsaw with Rev. Diane Loomis officiating. Interment will be in the Olivewood Cemetery in Riverside, California

Cletis L. Phegley
May 10th, 2004

Cletis L. Phegley, age 82, of Independence, Missouri, passed away Monday, May 10, 2004, at the Independence Regional Health Center in Independence, Missouri.

He was born in Fristoe, Missouri, on November 14, 1921, the son of Jessie H. and Nellie Day Phegley.

He grew up in Benton County and graduated from Warsaw High School in the class of 1939. He went to work in the shoe factory in Marshall, Missouri, with one of his brothers. When World War II started, he enlisted in the Navy to be a pilot, but would become an aircrewman on a "helldiver" bomber. He served overseas in the Pacific with the Thunderbirds of Air Group 12 aboard the USS Randolph CV 15. He was once shot down and recovered on a bombing run over the Japanese home islands.

After the war, he moved to Kansas City and had a couple of jobs before starting work for General Motors. He retired from there after thirty years of employment.

On March 17, 1951, he was united in marriage to Ruth Edde at Springfield, Missouri. Unto this union, two sons were born. He was a devoted husband and father and was active in the Boy Scouts of America when his sons were growing up.

In recent years, he enjoyed working with the Benton County Historical Society. He also enjoyed attending the reunions of his carrier air group, the Thunderbirds of Air Group 12. He was a dedicated Christian and was active in his church serving in the choir, bible study groups, and sharing his faith with others. He was very gregarious and enjoyed talking with new people he would meet.

Cletis is survived by two sons, Larry Phegley, of Monterey, California, and Richard L. Phegley, of Modesto California, two grandchildren, one sister, Mrs. Chloris Owsley, of Cross Timbers, Missouri, other relatives and many friends.

Funeral services will be at 10:00 A.M. Wednesday morning, May 19, 2004, at the Mt. Washington United Methodist Church in Independence, Missouri, with Rev. James Coffer officiating. Graveside funeral services andBurial will be at 2:30 P.M. Wednesday afternoon, at the Fisher Cemetery near Preston, Missouri. Pallbearers are Francis Logan, Jasper Burnfin, Ron Burnfin, Tom Burnfin, and John Greene. Visitation will be from 7:00 to 8:00 P.M. Tuesday evening at the Reser Funeral Home in Warsaw, Missouri.
