Gerald K. "Jerry" Engle
(September 13, 1935 - January 13, 2012)
U.S. Veteran

The avid fisherman and hunter Jerry Engle, a former executive at Wetterau (later SuperValu) Foods passed on from lung cancer on January 13, 2012.

He was both born and died on Friday the 13th.

His grandparents were James William Hamilton Engle and Amanda Mae Lamb Engle of Monroe City Missouri, and Edward Ford and Ida Baynum Ford of Indian Creek, MO, who owned neighboring farms. His birth family consisted of his parents Adrian K. Engle and Catherine Lucille Ford Engle, as well as his big sister Adrienne Engle Fairley. (His sister and husband Delbert Fairley live in Boonville, MO).

Jerry was born in Kansas City, MO. One of his earliest memories was watching Buck O’Neil and the Kansas City Monarchs play pro baseball. As a child, his parents both worked full time at the AT&T; telephone company, which was unusual in those days. His parents taught him to be thrifty, to laugh and to love sports and fishing.

He moved twice as a boy, first to Monroe City, then to Mexico MO. A star athlete, he began playing varsity high school basketball and baseball in 7th grade, used up his 5 years of eligibility, and joined the Army on his 18th birthday. In the Army, his ability to do math in his head earned him a position doing the calculations necessary for artillery. He was the only one from his class flown directly from basic training to Korea, his first plane flight, which involved 6 stops. When he returned from the service, he played semiprofessional baseball as a second baseman, including against Mickey Mantle. Quick with a self-deprecating quip, Engle said "I had two singles that game, and all Mantle did was hit a homer left-handed and right handed."

Wetterau Foods recruited him into their new technology department, starting at the bottom. A former boss remembers him as "the most competitive man I’ve known". Jerry rose to become Director of Procurement. He retired after 30 years.

In 1960, he won the hand of the brilliant Rita Elliott (Engle) of Mexico, and they were married for 51 years. He always told everyone "Everyone should be as lucky in love as I have been". He and Rita made sure that their 4 children and 6 grandchildren shared their love of books and business. He taught his children that "good manners don’t cost a thing, and always look at what is in it for the other person, not just yourself." He was a fan of Presidents FDR and JFK, and was amazed to live long enough to get to vote for President Obama.

He was a role model of entrepreneurship for his kids, having a catering business with his partner Ben Oligschlaeger. They were the original Ben & Jerry’s. This business paid college tuition for his children, and gave them courage.

Engle is survived by his devoted wife Rita of the home in Warsaw, and sons Peter Engle and wife Kim Mills Engle of St. Charles, MO, Paul Engle of Wichita, and G.K. "Jake" Engle, Jr. from the Portland Oregon area. His daughter Mindy Engle Mauer and husband John of Overland Park Kansas also miss him terribly. Jerry Engle has 6 grandchildren, Caroline, Emily, Luke, Hunter, Kyle and Joshua.

Memorial funeral mass at St. Ann’s Catholic Church in Warsaw, MO, at 10:00 A.M., Monday, January 16, 2012, to be followed by interment and military Honors on Thursday, January 19, 2012 at Missouri Veterans Cemetery in Higginsville, MO.

No flowers please, remembrances can be made to the American Cancer Society.
