Pauline Houk
Born: April 04, 1921
Died: December 21, 2015
Lottie Pauline (Sadler) Houk, 94, was born in Benton County, MO, on April 4, 1921 to Ellasyph Elvira (Ella) and Ira Allen (I.A.) Sadler.
She was the seventh of their eight children: Blanch, Zella, Margaret Clementine (Tiny), Evelyn, Melvin, Lloyd, and Charles.
She attended Oak Grove Grade School and Lincoln High School.
She fell in love with Edwin (Pete) Houk. Times were hard, so Pete raised and sold watermelons on the McQueen land (where her daughter lives now) to raise the money to get married. On August 26, 1939, she and Pete eloped along with Charlie and Oma McQueen at the courthouse in Butler, MO. While they were waiting, an older man asked if they were getting married and he said not to, as he had tried it three times. It was bad advice since she and Pete were married for 77 years.
A daughter, Joyce, was born September 10, 1940. WWII intervened in their life when Pete was drafted in 1944 and sent to the Philippines. After his discharge, Pete and Pauline bought his great aunt and uncle’s house and 40 acres, close to his Grandmother Houk’s home in Benton County where she resided until the time of her death. Pete worked at the International Shoe Company in Windsor, MO, for 43 years, while Pauline rose every day at 4:30 AM to see him off. She kept house, raised a large garden, and milked cows to sell Grade C milk. A great cook, she was especially known for her pie-making.
She was a life-long member of Hickory Chapel United Methodist Church. She (and Pete) thoroughly enjoyed crappie fishing and shared this favorite activity with family and friends as often as they could. They especially enjoyed visits from her nephew, Chris Sadler, and great-nephew, Josh Sadler.
She is survived by her husband, Pete; daughter and son-in-law, Joyce and Harlan Cramer; grandchildren, Lynne Wolford and her husband, Dale; Lisa Cramer; Barry Cramer and his wife, Sarah; great-grand children, Aleshia McNish; John Dalton Cramer; Brody Allen Cramer; and many other special nieces and nephews.
