Connie L. Hartman
1943-1999
CAMERON, Mo. -- Connie L. (Hockaday) Hartman, 56, Cameron, formerly of St. Joseph, died Saturday, July 24, 1999, at her home.
Mrs. Hartman had owned This and That, a Cameron variety store, before owning and operating the Cameron Cab Co. with her husband.
Born March 30, 1943, in Tacoma, Wash., she lived in Cameron for the past 25 years. She moved to Cameron from St. Joseph.
She married Jerry R. Hartman on June 5, 1959, in St. Joseph. He survives of the home.
Mrs. Hartman was preceded in death by her parents, Leo and Edna Hockaday.
Additional surviving: three sons, Jerry Jr. and Danny Hartman and Robert Farr, all of Cameron; her stepmother, Mary L. Hockaday, St. Joseph; four brothers, Leo E. and Emory Hockaday and Eldon and Bill Sells, all of St. Joseph; two sisters, Joyce Scott and Delores Platt, both of St. Joseph; 13 grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.
Service: 10 a.m. Tuesday, Poland-Thompson Funeral Home, Cameron. Burial: Greenlawn Cemetery, Plattsburg, Mo. Visitation: 7 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be sent to Comfort Care Hospice, Cameron, in care of the funeral home.

Louise Kimberlin
1911-1999
Louise (Calkins) Reeves Kimberlin, 88, St. Joseph, died Friday, July 23, 1999, at a St. Joseph hospital.
Mrs. Kimberlin worked as a social worker from 1940 to 1942. She also was an active volunteer in St. Joseph and a Girl Scout leader for several years. She taught French at St. Joseph Junior College, Central High School and Bishop LeBlond High School, and with other teachers, founded Alliance Francaise. In the early 1950s she was human rights chairman for the Missouri League of Women Voters and in 1954, was appointed by Mayor Dale to chairwoman of the St. Joseph Human Rights Commission.
Born July 4, 1911, in St. Joseph, she was a graduate of Smith College.
Mrs. Kimberlin was a member of the Runcie Club; American Association of University Women; Junior League; Little Theater; League of Women Voters; the Board of the Platte Purchase Centennial Celebration; board of the Child Guidance Service; the Y.W.C.A.; the Nutrition Service; First Presbyterian Women; and Church Women United.
In 1942, she married Dr. Jeremiah Reeves. He died in 1946. In 1952, she married Judge William H. Kimberlin. They divorced in 1979.
Mrs. Kimberlin was preceded in death by her parents, Benton M. Sr. and Ludelda M. Calkins; and two brothers, Benton M. Jr. and Krug Calkins.
Surviving: a son, Jeremiah E. Reeves, St. Joseph; and two grandchildren.
Service: 2 p.m. Tuesday, First Presbyterian Church, St. Joseph. Burial: Mount Mora Cemetery, St. Joseph. Family visitation: 7 to 8:30 p.m. Monday, Meierhoffer Family Funeral Care, St. Joseph. The family suggests memorial gifts to the First Presbyterian Church.

Frank B. Lentz
1914-1999
HIAWATHA, Kan. -- Frank B. Lentz, 85, Hiawatha, formerly of Highland, Kan., died Friday, July 23, 1999, at a Wathena, Kan., health-care center.
Mr. Lentz worked for the Pine Bluff Sand and Gravel Co. in Arkansas and along the Missouri River as a pile driver and a deck hand on the barge for many years, retiring in 1970. After retiring, he did carpentry work and was a commercial fisherman on the Missouri River. He also served in the Army during World War II.
Born Jan. 14, 1914, at Iowa Point in Doniphan County, Kan., he attended school at Iowa Point.
Mr. Lentz was a member of Iowa Point Community Church and American Legion Post of White Cloud, Kan.
On Sept. 13, 1947, he married Beverly Alfrey in Troy, Kan. Together, they moved to Highland in 1967 staying there until 1990, when they moved to Hiawatha. His wife, Beverly, survives.
Mr. Lentz was preceded in death by two sons, Bennie and James; his parents, Edward and Sadie; five brothers; and four sisters.
Additional survivors: four daughters, Virginia Lentz, St. Joseph, Sharon Twombly and Ellie Witt, both of Robinson, Kan., and Susan Nissen, Jackson, Miss.; two sons, Doug, White Cloud, and Thomas, Atchison, Kan.; a sister, Opal Lake, California; nine grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
Graveside service and burial: 2 p.m. Monday, Iowa Point Cemetery, Iowa Point Kan., with military rites under the auspices of American Legion of White Cloud. Family and friends will meet at 1:30 p.m. at Chapel Oaks Funeral Home, Highland, to follow in procession to the cemetery. Visitation: after 10 a.m. today at the funeral home, where the family will receive friends from 7 to 8 tonight. Memorial contributions may be sent to the Frank Lentz Memorial Fund, in care of the funeral home, P.O. Box 33, Highland, KS 66035.

Gladys M. Scanlan
1917-1999
CAMERON, Mo. -- Gladys M. (Harris) Scanlan, 81, Cameron, formerly of St. Joseph, died Tuesday, July 27, 1999, at a health-care center in Cameron.
For 30 years, Mrs. Scanlan was employed by the Cameron Insurance Co. until retiring in 1980.
Born in St. Joseph on Oct. 17, 1917, she lived in St. Joseph and was a graduate of Central High School in St. Joseph and attended a business college for two years.
Mrs. Scanlan was a member of the United Methodist Church, Cameron, where she was active in the Dorcas Circle.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Paul, in 1973; her parents, Charles and Alice M. Harris; and a sister, Alberta Stroppe.
Surviving: two sons, Mike, Denver, and Mack, College Station, Texas; a daughter, Mary Ann Jones, Kansas City; a brother, Charles Harris, Long Beach, Calif.; and four grandchildren.
Service: 10 a.m. Friday, United Methodist Church, Cameron. Burial: Cameron Memory Gardens Cemetery. Family visitation: 6 to 9 tonight at the Poland-Thompson Funeral Home, Cameron. Memorials may be made to the Cameron Historical Preservation Society.

Otto W. Slack
1932-1999
SENECA, Kan. -- Otto W. Slack, 67, Seneca, died of cancer Wednesday, July 28, 1999, at his home.
Mr. Slack was a bricklayer all of his adult life, beginning in 1949 in Fort Riley, Kan. He also was in business with his son William in the N.E. Kansas Construction Co. in Seneca until retiring in 1996.
Born in Pawnee City, Neb., on March 23, 1932, he was reared and attended school in Seneca.
In 1954, he married Anna M. Johnson. They were later divorced.
Mr. Slack was preceded in death by his parents, William and Bessie.
Surviving: two sons, William and Randy, both of Wamego, Kan.; two daughters, Karen Havens and Sharon Slack, both of Wamego; two brothers, LeRoy, Seneca, and Edward, Vienna, W.Va.; a sister, Mary Ann Ghyra, Pawnee City; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Memorial service: 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Lauer Funeral Home, Seneca. The body has been cremated. Inurnment: Seneca City Cemetery. Memorials may be made in his name with a designation to be made later in care of the family.

Charles Stutz
1899-1999
DENVER, Colo. -- Charles Stutz, 99, Denver, formerly of Effingham, Kan., died Tuesday, July 27, 1999, in Aurora, Colo.
Mr. Stutz was a pharmacist, operating the pharmacy in Effingham for 30 years.
Born Sept.2, 1899, in Lancaster, Kan., Mr. Stutz was a graduate of Atchison, Kan. High School. He enlisted in the Student Army Training Corps of Aviation at the University of Kansas and in 1919, he entered Pharmacy School in Wichita, Kan.
Mr. Stutz was a member of Masonic Lodge and Abdallah Shrine Temple.
In June 1922, he married Martha F. Grimes in Plattsburg, Mo. They moved to Denver in 1954 to operate Stutz Olive Drug for 27 years with their son. She died in 1977.
Mr. Stutz also was preceded in death by his parents, Frederick and Mary.
Surviving: a son, Gerald, Aurora, Colo.; three grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
Graveside service and burial: 11:30 a.m. Sunday, Evergreen Cemetery, Effingham. Visitation: after 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at O'Trimble Funeral Home in Effingham. The family will receive friends immediately following the service at Union Church in Effingham. Funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at Olinger Mortuary in Denver. Memorials may be made to Shriners Hospital for Children, Salt Lake City, Utah, or Hospice of Metro Denver, Denver.

H.C. Thomas
1912-1999
TRENTON, Mo. -- H.C. "Whistle" Thomas, 87, Trenton, died Tuesday, July 27, 1999, at the hospital in Chillicothe, Mo.
Mr. Thomas was a farmer and later operated a small engine repair shop in Trenton for over 40 years.
Born in Wayne County, Iowa, on March 17, 1912, where he attended school. He was a member of the Baptist Temple in Trenton.
On April 11, 1942, he married Margaret Vanderth in Chillicothe. She died in 1996.
Mr. Thomas also was preceded in death by a daughter, Lois J. Thomas; his parents, Ira and Martha; two brothers, Walter and Roy; and a grandchild.
Surviving: a daughter, Kathryn A. Suiter, Columbus, Neb.; three sons, James, Chillicothe, David, Trenton, and Paul, Smithville, Mo.; 12 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
Service: 9 a.m. Friday, Slater Funeral Home, Trenton. Burial: Willis Chapel Cemetery, north of Brimson, Mo. There is no scheduled family visitation.

Bernard H. Tushaus
1910-1999
SUN CITY, Ariz. -- Bernard H. Tushaus, 89, Sun City, formerly of St. Joseph, died Tuesday, July 27, 1999, at a hospital in Sun City.
Mr. Tushaus worked for finance companies in Missouri and California, and retired from the Liberty Loan Co. in Covina, Calif., in 1975.
Born in St. Joseph on Jan. 3, 1910, he moved from St. Joseph in 1946. He had resided in Madison, Mo., prior to moving to Sun City in 1984.
Mr. Tushaus was a graduate of the former Christian Brothers High School in St. Joseph and a member of St. Anne's Catholic Church, Sun City, where he was active in the Knights of Columbus, of which he was a grand knight. He was a former member of St. Joseph's Cathedral in St. Joseph.
In September of 1939, he married Julia Lusk. She survives of the home.
Mr. Tushaus was preceded in death by a son, Tommy; his parents, Joseph and Mary; and a brother, Carl.
Additional survivors: three daughters, Alice Wilkinson, Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Nancy Seyfert, Salem, Ore., and Martha A. McCormick, Des Moines, Iowa; two sons, Leo, Minneapolis, and David, St. Joseph; two sisters, Margaret Tushaus and Elizabeth Von Arb, both of Phoenix; 10 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Memorial Mass: Saturday, Aug. 1, St. Anne's Catholic Church, Sun City. The body has been donated to the University of Arizona in Tucson for medical education. A memorial service also is planned for a later date in St. Joseph.

Jack L. Ward
1932-1999
PETERSBURG, Ill. -- Jack L. Ward, 67, Petersburg, formerly of Burlington Junction, Mo., died Wednesday, July 14, 1999, at a hospice in Petersburg.
Mr. Ward had been employed as a plumbing contractor. He also served in the Army and as captain of the Reactivated Illinois 7th Cavalry.
Born in Clarinda, Iowa, on May 29, 1932, he was a graduate of the Burlington Junction high school and a member of the West Side Christian Church in Springfield, Ill.
On June 13, 1953, he married Nancy Cornell in New Franklin, Mo. She survives of the home.
Mr. Ward was preceded in death by his father, Miles.
Additional survivors: three daughters, Teresa Nuss and Diana Peecher, both of Springfield, and Kathy Reilly, Waunakee, Wis.; his mother, Millie Ward, Tarkio, Mo.; two brothers, Paul, Burlington Junction, Mo., and Robert, St. Joseph; and nine grandchildren.
A memorial service was held Saturday, July 17, at the Hurley Funeral Home in Petersburg. The body was donated for anatomical study. Memorials may be made to the S.I.U. School of Medicine or St. John's Hospice, both of Petersburg.

Nona I. Whithorn
1927-1999
Nona Irene Whithorn, 72, St. Joseph, died Tuesday, July 27, 1999, at a St. Joseph hospital.
Miss Whithorn worked in the quality control department of the former H.D. Lee Co. in St. Joseph for 33 years until retiring in 1989.
Born in St. Joseph on Feb. 19, 1927, she was a lifelong resident of St. Joseph.
She was a member of the Immanual Baptist Church in St. Joseph.
Miss Whithorn was preceded in death by her parents, Charles and Letha Whithorn; and two brothers, Boyd F. and Charles Whithorn.
Surviving: a daughter, Marsha Brendle, St. Joseph; a sister, Bonnie Wells, Magee, Miss.; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Service: 10 a.m. Friday, Rupp Funeral Home, St. Joseph. Burial: Mount Auburn Cemetery, St. Joseph. Visitation: after noon today at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.

John J. Wilson
1906-1999
John Jay Wilson, 93, St. Joseph, formerly of Oregon, Mo., died Monday, July 26, 1999, at a hospital in Kansas City.
Mr. Wilson had been a self-employed carpenter and painter.
Born in Mound City, Mo., on Feb. 27, 1906, he had lived in Mound City and Oregon prior to moving to St. Joseph.
Mr. Wilson was a graduate of New Point, Mo., high school; and a member of the Seventh-Day Adventist Three Angels Church in St. Joseph.
On July 6, 1931, he married Lena E. Pullen. She died in 1984.
Mr. Wilson also was preceded in death by his parents, Finley A. and Nancy A.; four brothers, Raymond, Charles, Owen and Ernest P.; and six sisters, Ona Lawrence, Anna M. Wilson, Daisy Springer, Retha Herman, and Helen H. and Maude L. Wilson.
Surviving: three sons, John L. Jr., Pattonsburg, Mo., and Larry and David, both of Kansas City; five daughters, Shirley Higby, Peoria, Ill., Nancy Suppenbach, Kansas City, Linda Williamson, Overland Park, Kan., Judy Hall, Raytown, Mo., and Clara Burton, St. Joseph; a niece, Angela Stanley, Kansas City, reared in the home; 26 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.
Service: 10:30 a.m. today, Chamberlain Funeral Home, Oregon. Burial: Maple Grove Cemetery, Oregon.

Tony Marsola
1923-1999
Tony Marsola, 75, St. Joseph, died Friday, July 23, 1999, at a local hospital.
Mr. Marsola worked for the St. Joseph Police Department for 25 years, retiring as detective in 1978. He also served in the Navy as a chief petty officer during World War II and the Korean War and spent 20 years in the reserves.
Born Dec. 19, 1923, in Los Angeles, he had lived in St. Joseph since 1953.
Mr. Marsola was a member of McCarthy Baptist Church; Fraternal Order of Police; Fleet Reserve Association at American Legion; American Legion Post No. 359; Myrna Manor North Home Owners' Association; Police Pension Board; and was director of the Muchenberger Center for eight years, where he had worked for 30 years.
On March 3, 1972, he married Betty J. Hines in Miami, Okla. She survives of the home.
Mr. Marsola was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Mary A.; and three sisters, Angela Bertone, Leila Eidem, and Jean Tawney.
Additional survivors: two sons, Nick Gilpin, Columbia, Mo., and Tony L. Marsola, St. Joseph; a daughter, Monette A. Fortune, St. Joseph; a sister, Mary Nichols, North Hollywood, Calif.; and four grandchildren.
Service: 1 p.m. Monday, Heaton-Bowman-Smith & Sidenfaden Chapel, St. Joseph. Burial: Memorial Park Cemetery, St. Joseph. Visitation: after 9 a.m. today at the funeral home, where the family will receive friends from 6 to 8 tonight. Memorial contributions maybe sent to McCarthy Baptist Church or the American Heart Association.
