Leona M. Bell
1917-1999
ATCHISON, Kan. -- Leona M. (Hall) Bell, 81, Atchison, died Thursday, Jan. 21, 1999, at the Atchison hospital.
Mrs. Bell had taught music and English at the Galesburg, Kan., high school for two years and was music supervisor for the Lyndon, Kan., elementary and high schools for a year. In Atchison, she taught at the Washington and Franklin Elementary Schools for two years.
She also was a piano teacher for over 45 years and was an accompanist for many vocal groups and soloists in Atchison, and served as pianist for the Atchison Kiwanis Club for 25 years.
Born in Topeka, Kan., on May 13, 1917, she graduated from the Highland Park High School in Topeka and earned a bachelor's degree in music education from the University of Kansas at Lawrence, Kan.
Mrs. Bell was a member of the Atchison United Methodist Church, where she sang in the choir, was choir director and active in United Methodist Women. She also was a member of Chapter J of the P.E.O. Sisterhood, of which she was a past president, and Martin School Parent-Teacher Association of Atchison. She also had served on the Atchison Community Concert Band for 50 years.
On July 4, 1943, she married Lloyd E. Bell in Topeka. They made their home in Atchison. He survives of the home.
Mrs. Bell was preceded in death by her parents, Clifford and Florence Hall; and a brother.
Additional survivors: two daughters, Linda L. Linder, Edina, Minn., and Lana J. Meyers, Jacksonville, Ore.; a brother, Donald L. Hall, Topeka; and four grandchildren.
Memorial service: 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 30, United Methodist Church, Atchison. The body has been cremated. Private family inurnment: Mount Hope Cemetery, Topeka. Family visitation: following the service, in the fellowship hall of the church. Agnes E. Faurot
1907-1999
ATCHISON, Kan. -- Agnes Emma (Matthias) Faurot, 92, Atchison, died Friday, Jan. 22, 1999, at a health-care center in Atchison.
Mrs. Faurot assisted her parents in the operation of a general retail store, post office and grain elevator in Shannon, Kan., after her graduation. She also worked as an office employee at the Blair Elevator and as a bookkeeper at the Bulk Standard Oil Plant, both in Atchison. During World War II, she was employed by the War Price and Rationing Board for Atchison County, Kan., and after the war, as a civil service employee with the Department of Agriculture, Farmers Home Administration.
Born in Huron, Kan., on Nov. 14, 1907, she graduated from the Atchison high school and attended the Atchison Business College.
Mrs. Faurot was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church, Atchison, where she was active in Rebecca Circle; XYZ Club; National Association of Retired Federal Employees; Northeast Kansas Community Action Program and Presbyterian Shepherd Center.
On Feb. 14, 1949, she married Dr. Ira N. Faurot, pastor of the Presbyterian Church in Smith Center, Kan. After retiring, the couple moved to Nortonville, Kan., in 1956. He died in 1974. In 1980, she moved to Atchison.
Mrs. Faurot also was preceded in death by two stepsons, Drs. Albert and Jean Faurot; her parents, William and Annie M. Matthias; and a sister, Margaret Clark.
Surviving: a stepdaughter, Dr. Ruth M. Faurot, Stockton, Calif.; and several stepgrandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Service: 10:30 a.m. Monday, Trinity Lutheran Church, Atchison. The body will be taken to the church one hour before the service. Burial: Mount Vernon Cemetery, Atchison. Visitation: 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, at the Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home, Atchison. Memorials may be made to the Trinity Lutheran School Grant Fund or the Trinity Lutheran Dream Fund.
Curtis Howe
1911-1999
PASCAGOULA, Miss. -- Curtis Howe, 87, Pascagoula, formerly of Chillicothe, Mo., died Thursday, Jan. 21, 1999, in Grand Bay, Ala.
Mr. Howe, born in Unionville, Mo., on Aug. 26, 1911, had been a dairy farmer in Livingston County, Mo., for many years.
He was a graduate of the Genoa, Colo., high school. Mr. Howe attended the Highview Baptist Church in Chillicothe and was active in the Chillicothe Genealogy Society.
On May 27, 1948, he married Alice R. Mitchell in Sonoma, Calif. She is deceased.
Mr. Howe also was preceded in death by his parents, Arthur and Dora; a brother, Guy; and a sister, Silvia.
Surviving: a daughter, Diane Hilsabeck, Pascagoula; two brothers, Roy, Lymon, Colo., and Loren, Columbus, Ohio; six sisters, Eula Fisher, Genoa, Norma Bylsna, Ramah, Colo., Alice Baldwin, Russellville, Ark., Betty Wardrop, Linden, Mich., Laura Stone, Flagler, Colo., and Fern Balaun, Evergreen, Colo.; and three grandchildren.

Jennie C. Kent
1907-1999
Jennie Catherine (Lundy) Kent, 91, St. Joseph, formerly of Mound City, Mo., died Thursday, Jan. 21, 1999, at a St. Joseph health-care center.
Mrs. Kent, a homemaker, also had worked as a cashier for the Bower's Market in Mound City for several years.
Born in Holt County, Mo., on Sept. 15, 1907, she had lived all of her life in Holt County until moving to St. Joseph in 1996.
She was a graduate of the Fortescue, Mo., high school and attended Northwest Missouri State University at Maryville, Mo. Mrs. Kent was a member of the First Christian Church and Chapter No. 476, Order of the Eastern Star, of which she was past worthy matron, both of Mound City.
On Dec. 31, 1928, she married Carl Kent. He died in 1975.
Mrs. Kent also was preceded in death by a daughter, Rose Gibson; her parents, Sterling and Elizabeth Lundy; a sister, Marie Stone; and a brother, Sterling Lundy Jr.
Surviving: two daughters, Catherine Ross, Essex, Iowa, and Carlene Caton, St. Joseph; eight grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild.

Hazel N. Kirk
1912-1999
SABETHA, Kan. -- Hazel Norene (Engle) Kirk, 86, Sabetha, died Thursday, Jan. 21, 1999, at a health-care center in Sabetha.
Mrs. Kirk and her husband, Carl, had owned and operated the Woodlawn General Store in Woodlawn, Kan., from 1945 to 1954. They also farmed west of Woodlawn.
Born near Hamlin, Kan., on July 30, 1912, she was reared and attended the Pennsylvania Avenue School in that area.
She was a member of the Woodlawn Baptist Church and Wesleyan Church of Sabetha.
On Oct. 4, 1934, she married Carl Kirk. They lived in Indiana until 1945 when they moved to the Woodlawn area. After retiring in 1976, the couple moved to Axtell, Kan.; Seneca, Kan., in 1990 and to a Sabetha health-care center in 1993. He survives.
Mrs. Kirk was preceded in death by her parents, Herman and Sarah Engle Sr.; two brothers, Glen and Herman Engle Jr.; and three sisters, Clara Harold, Mary Hollens and Nellie Simmons.

Emery L. Noah Jr.
1930-1999
Emery LeRoy Noah Jr., 68, St. Joseph, died Friday, Jan. 22, 1999, at a St. Joseph hospital.
Mr. Noah had worked with his father, Emery, in the heating and cooling business until retiring. During the Korean War, he served in the Air Force.
Born in St. Joseph on Aug. 25, 1930, he was a lifelong resident of St. Joseph.
On Oct. 2, 1956, he married Geraldine Wright in St. Joseph. She survives of the home.
Mr. Noah was preceded in death by his parents, Emery Sr. and Mary; and a grandchild.
Additional survivors: a son, David, St. Joseph; a foster son, Joe Waters, St. Joseph; four daughters, Gerry Walker, Lori Noah-Young and Kathie Johnson, all of St. Joseph, and Libby Noah-Rhyne, Raymore, Mo.; a sister, Mary Kendzora, Cosby, Mo.; 10 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Guy G. Smith

KING CITY, Mo. -- Guy Gibson Smith, 74, King City, died Friday, Jan. 22, 1999, at his residence west of King City.
Mr. Smith, a farmer all of his adult life, was born Nov. 29, 1924, on the family farm, where he had lived most of his life. During World War II, he served in the Army.
He was a member of the Star Chapel United Methodist Church, Empire Prairie, Mo., west of King City; and King City American Legion Post No. 132.
On July 26, 1949, he married Ethel Hutchcraft in St. Joseph. She survives of the home.
Mr. Smith was preceded in death by two daughters, Judy and Peggy Smith; and his parents, Walter K. and Iva M.

Lillian M. Turner

MOUND CITY, Mo. -- Lillian M. "Rink'' (Chesnut) Turner, 85, Mound City, formerly of St. Joseph, died Friday, Jan. 22, 1999, at a a health-care center in Mound City following a brief illness.
Mrs. Turner and her husband, Charles, had owned and operated the Turner Hy-Klas Grocery in St. Joseph and Oregon, Mo. They also had managed the Hy-Klas Grocery in Mound City.
Born in Wallace, Mo., on April 26, 1913, she had lived most of her life in St. Joseph, Mound City and Oregon.
She was a member of the Oregon United Methodist Church and was a former member of the Holt Extension Club.
Mrs. Turner was preceded in death by her husband, Charles E., in 1987; her parents, Alvie F. and Grace E. Chesnut; two brothers, Jake and Lowell Chesnut; and a sister, Peat Farmer.
Surviving: two daughters, Pat Johns, Mound City, and Connie G. Melton, Jacksonville, Ill.; six grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

John P. Vaughn

LAKE STATION, Ind. - John P. Vaughn, 69, Lake Station, formerly of Spickard, Mo., died Wednesday, Jan. 20, 1999, at a hospital in Hobart, Ind.
Mr. Vaughn, a retired carpenter, also served in the Marine Corps during the Korean War.
Born in Mill Grove, Mo., on Sept. 13, 1929, he had lived in Spickard and in Lake Station for several years.
He was a graduate of the Pocahontas, Ind., high school and was a member of the H.L. McClelland Masonic Lodge No. 357, A.F. & A.M., in Hobart.
On April 19, 1958, she married Mary L. Morey in Corrinth, Miss. She died in 1984.
Mr. Vaughn was preceded in death by his parents, Rex and Helen.
Surviving: an uncle, W.L. Vaughn, Trenton; and several cousins.
Graveside service and burial: 2 p.m. Sunday, Masonic Cemetery, Spickard. There is no scheduled family visitation. Memorials may be made to the H.L. McClelland Masonic Lodge No. 357, A.F. & A.M., Hobart, in care of the Slater Funeral Home, Trenton, which is in charge of arrangements.
Emma L. Allnutt

CAMDEN POINT, Mo. -- Emma Lee (Bledsoe) Allnutt, 77, Camden Point, died Friday, Jan. 22, 1999, at a Kansas City hospital.
Born Jan. 30, 1921, near Dearborn, Mo., Mrs. Allnutt attended school in Dearborn.
On Nov. 22, 1937, she married Roy E. Allnutt Jr. After their marriage, they lived in Dearborn, and later Faucett, Mo. In 1954, they moved to Camden Point, where they made their home. Her husband, Roy, died in 1980.
Mrs. Allnutt also was preceded in death by a son, Larry D.; her parents, Bill E. and Mary M. Bledsoe; two brothers, W.A. and Roy Bledsoe; and two sisters, Helen Stagner and Shirley Slayden.
Surviving: four sons, Sonny, St. Joseph, Lee, Dearborn, and Wayne and Donald, both of Camden Point; a brother, Ray Bledsoe, Dearborn; seven grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Burt E. Ayers

ALTAMONT, Mo. -- Burt Ernest Ayers, 78, Altamont, died Thursday, Jan. 21, 1999, at a hospital in Cameron, Mo.
Born Jan. 1, 1921, in Altamont, Mr. Ayers was a farmer and carpenter there most of his life. He graduated from the School for the Deaf, Fulton, Mo.
Mr. Ayers was a member of the United Methodist Church in Altamont.
On Oct. 14, 1956, he married Alice Frasier in Barnard, Mo. She survives of the home.
Mr. Ayers was preceded in death by his parents, Harold and Mary; and a brother, Maxi L. Hembaugh.
Additional survivor: a half brother, Donald Cavin, Waikiki, Hawaii.

Ivas R. Cain

ALBANY, Mo. -- Ivas R. Cain, 83, Albany, died Friday, Jan. 22, 1999, at an Albany health-care center.
Born Feb. 23, 1915, in McFall, Mo., Mr. Cain worked as a farm hand there until retiring. He also served in the Army during World War II.
In 1944, he married Grace Grubbe in Trenton, Mo. She preceded him in death.
Mr. Cain also was preceded in death by a daughter, Janie Holiday; a infant son, Jerald; his parents; and a grandchild.
Surviving: two sons, Freddie, Albany, and Charles, Kansas City; two daughters, Janet Holiday and Betty Watney; 11 grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren.
