Ed Rork
1906-1999
HORTON, Kan. -- Ed Rork, 92, Horton, died Friday, Feb. 5, 1999, at the Horton hospital.
Mr. Rork, a farmer and stockman, also worked in Texas in the construction of grain elevators during his early years. He served in the Army National Guard.
Born in Kennekuk, Kan., on April 15, 1906, he was a graduate of the Horton high school.
He was a member of the First Christian Church and Odd Fellows Lodge, both of Horton. Mr. Rork served on the board of the Kennekuk School District No. 58 and Little Delaware Mission Watershed Board.
On Nov. 30, 1933, he married Flora M. Nottingham in Horton. She died in 1987.
Mr. Rork also was preceded in death by his parents, George and Sarah; a brother, Clarence; and three sisters, Edith Barrand, Florence Willich and Hazel Littrel.
Surviving: two sons, G.E., Horton, and Gerald, Lawrence, Kan.; a daughter, Shirley Slade, Topeka, Kan.; nine grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.
Service: 10 a.m. Monday, Dishon-Maple-Chaney Mortuary, Horton. Burial: Horton Cemetery. Family visitation: 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday at the mortuary. Memorials may be made in his name with a designation to be decided later in care of the mortuary, 909 Central Ave., Horton, Kan., 66439.
Hilbert W. Sheridan
1901-1999
STANBERRY, Mo. -- Hilbert William Sheridan, 97, Stanberry, died Tuesday, Feb. 2, 1999, at a health-care center in Stanberry.
Mr. Sheridan, a maker of fine cabinetry, was the owner and operator of the Sheridan Store Equipment in Kansas City for over 50 years.
Born in Gentry County, Mo., on May 14, 1901, he lived in Kansas City before moving to Stanberry.
He was a member of the Southwest Bible Church, Shawnee, Kan.; and Blue Ridge Bible Church and Carpenters Union, both of Kansas City. Mr. Sheridan served on the board of GMU, Smithville, Mo.; and board of Carver Bible Institute, Kansas City.
On Feb. 1, 1920, he married Mamie N. Evans. She is deceased.
Mr. Sheridan also was preceded in death by a son, Gerald; his parents, William E. and Rosa; and a brother, Verlin.
Surviving: two daughters, Juanita Boylan, Ames, Iowa, and Marjorie Short, Yorba Linda, Calif.; a sister, Lucille Howery, Portland, Ore.; seven grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
Service: 2 p.m. Monday, Island City Christian Church, Stanberry. Burial: Highridge Cemetery, Stanberry. Visitation: after 3 p.m. Sunday at the Roberson-Polley Chapel, Stanberry. There is no scheduled family visitation.
Stella Stroud
1915-1999
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- Stella Stroud, 84, Colorado Springs, died Wednesday, Feb. 3, 1999, at a health-care center in Colorado Springs.
Born in Preston, Mo., on Jan. 17, 1915, Mrs. Stroud was a retired nurse.
On June 1, 1934, she married Dale Stroud. He survives of the home.
Mrs. Stroud was preceded in death by a daughter, JoAnn Seaver.
Surviving: a son, Wayne G., St. Joseph; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
The funeral service was held Friday, Feb. 5, at the Evergreen Funeral Home in Colorado Springs. Burial was in the Evergreen Cemetery of Colorado Springs.
Arville O. Walker
1908-1999
ROCK PORT, Mo. -- Arville O. "Doc" Walker, 90, Rock Port, died Thursday, Feb. 4, 1999, at a health-care center in Rock Port.
Mr. Walker farmed and hauled livestock during the Depression. He operated a garage in Langdon, Mo., and moved to Omaha, Neb., in 1942, and worked as a mechanic for the Martin Bomber Plant at Fort Crook, near Omaha, during World War II. Then he moved to Rock Port in 1946 and was a diesel mechanic for the Rex Shandy International Tractor, now known as Kline Truck and Tractor, in Rock Port, until retiring in 1973.
Born in Langdon on Aug. 29, 1908, he attended the Rock Port high school and was a member of the First Lutheran Church in Rock Port.
On Aug. 29, 1931, he married Mildred K. Cooper in Rock Port. She survives of the home.
Mr. Walker was preceded in death by his parents, Charlie and Hermie.
Additional survivors: a son, Kenneth K., Rock Port; two daughters, Shirley True, Rock Port, and Jeanne Garst, Watson, Mo.; eight grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Donnell E. Carey

DAWN, Mo. -- Donnell E. Carey, 74, Dawn, died Friday, Feb. 5, 1999, at a Chillicothe hospital.
Mr. Carey was born May 26, 1924, in Dawn. Mr. Carey, a retired postmaster, served in the Army during World War II.
Mr. Carey was a member of the Dawn Federated Church, American Legion Post No. 0025, Chillicothe, Dawn Masonic Lodge, Scottish Rite, St. Joseph, Chillicothe Shrine and the Rollin Rascals.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Adolphus B. and Hazel; a brother; and a grandchild.
Surviving: a son, Tom, Warrensburg, Mo.; a daughter, Christy Barricklow, Warrensburg; a brother, Dale, Jacksonville, Fla.; and three grandchildren.

Velma L. Cummins

TRENTON, Mo. -- Velma L. (Stewart) Cummins, 92, Trenton, died Friday, Feb. 5, 1999, at a Trenton health-care center.
Mrs. Cummins, a resident of Trenton since 1995, worked as an interior decorator.
Born June 24, 1906, in Michigan, Mrs. Cummins attended schools in Coffeyville, Kan., and Oklahoma.
She was a member of the Trenton Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
Mrs. Cummins was preceded in death by her husband, Virgil; her parents, Harry M. and Jessie Stewart; two brothers; and two great-grandchildren.
Surviving: two daughters, Beverly Gragert, Trenton, and Mona Mozingo, Winfield, Kan.; two sons, Stewart, Neodesha, Kan., and Wesley Cummins, Boise, Idaho; 12 grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren.

Leonard P. Hellerich
1926-1999
MOUNT PROSPECT, Ill. -- Leonard P. Hellerich, 72, Mount Prospect, formerly of St. Joseph, died Tuesday, Jan. 12, 1999, at a hospital in Arlington Heights, Ill., following an illness of lung disease.
Mr. Hellerich began his career as a casualty underwriter for the Liberty Mutual Insurance Co. in Skokie, Ill., in 1950. He also served as an insurance supervisor at International Minerals and Chemical Corp. in Chicago. From 1961 until retiring in 1986, he was employed by Interlake Steel Corp. in Lisle, Ill., where he was the assistant treasurer and risk manager responsible for employee benefits and corporate insurance policies. After his retirement, he continued to work in the insurance industry as a consultant.
He was a member of the American Iron and Steel Institute in Chicago and later served as the chairman of the Committee on Insurance Problems.
Born in St. Joseph on Dec. 10, 1926, he was a graduate of Central High School in St. Joseph. He had been a resident of Mount Prospect for 331/2 years.
He served in the Army from 1944 to 1946 in the Philippines during World War II and was a staff sergeant in charge of a prisoner-of-war camp. He also was the middleweight boxing champion on the base.
Mr. Hellerich earned a bachelor's degree in business administration from Baker University in Baldwin City, Kan.; and a master's degree in business administration from the University of Chicago.
He was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church in St. Joseph and the Chicago chapter of the American Society of Insurance Management Inc., of which he was a past president. His investment strategies have been published in numerous magazines and trade journals.
Mr. Hellerich was a former baseball coach and umpire for the Mount Prospect Park District, and served as a Boy Scout leader in Elgin and Des Plaines, Ill.
On April 17, 1948, he married Bernita C. Berry in Omaha, Neb. She survives of the home.
He was preceded in death by a son, Grant; a brother, Richard; and a sister, Patricia Langley.
Additional survivors: two sons, Mark P., Mount Prospect, and Paul L., St. Joseph; two daughters, Kimberly J. Sperlazzo, West Dundee, Ill., and Claudia H. Schmidt, Mount Prospect; a sister, Mary Shipley, St. Joseph; and six grandchildren.
The funeral service was held Friday, Jan. 15, at the Lauterburg & Oehler Funeral Home in Arlington Heights. Burial was in Randhill Park of Arlington Heights.
H. Roberta Knorr
1913-1999
H. Roberta (White) Knorr, 85, St. Joseph, died Friday, Feb. 5, 1999, at a St. Joseph health-care center.
Born July 18, 1913, in Clarksdale, Mo., she was raised in Clarksdale and lived most of her life in St. Joseph.
Mrs. Knorr was a member of Wyatt Park Christian Church, St. Joseph, and the Women's Circle of the church.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, Wm. M. Pearson, in 1968; her second husband, Chester Knorr in 1991; her parents, George L. and Katie White; two sisters, Parolee W. Muff and Effie M. Carrel; five brothers, Charley S. White, Lawrence L. White, Clarence O. White, Ray P. White and Forest G. White.
Surviving: a daughter, Patricia Smith, Houston; a stepson, Charles Knorr, Pickering, Mo.; a stepdaughter, Mary A. Gilmore, St. Joseph; two grandchildren; a great-grandchild; and numerous stepgrandchildren.

Virgil D. Knudson

HORTON, Kan. -- Virgil D. Knudson, 75, Horton, died Friday, Feb. 5, 1999, at his home.
Mr. Knudson, a farmer and stockman, served in the Army during World War II.
Born April 23, 1923, in Willis, Kan., he graduated from Willis High School.
Mr. Knudson was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, Everest, Kan., Abdallah Shrine, Kops Elks Lodge, and the Veterans of Foreign Wars, all of Hiawatha, Kan.
On March 12, 1949, he married Eileen Kanning in Lancaster, Kan. She survives of the home.
Mr. Knudson was preceded in death by a sister, Veta J.

John J. Little

COSBY, Mo. -- John J. Little, 33, Cosby, formerly of Savannah and Weston, Mo., died Friday, Feb. 5, 1999, at a St. Joseph hospital.
He was employed in the business office at Missouri Western State College and was a previous employee of Mercantile Bank for 10 years in the Trust Department.
Born February 22, 1965, in Trenton, Mo., Mr. Little resided in the St. Joseph area most of his life.
Mr. Little was a member of Bethel Baptist Church, Cosby, where he was a deacon, assistant treasurer, youth leader and Sunday school teacher. He earned his B.S. and B.A. degrees in business management from Missouri Western State College and was a member of the Gold Coat Club.
On August 7, 1987, he married, Lisa A. Salmons, in St. Joseph. She survives of the home.
He was preceded in death by a paternal grandfather, John J. Little, Sr.; and his grandparents, John and Louise Burdette.

EXCELSIOR SPRINGS, Mo. -- Joyce Donita (Coble) Pounds, 47, Excelsior Springs, formerly of Holt, Mo., and Dallas, died Friday, Feb. 5, 1999, at a Liberty, Mo., hospital.
Mrs. Pounds worked as a manager for Pro Cuts in Dallas, where she lived for the past 15 years. She came to Excelsior Springs just a few days before her death.
She was born on Aug. 23, 1951, in Kansas City, Kan.
Mrs. Pounds was preceded in death by her parents, J.D. and Elsie L. Coble; a son, Gene R. Campbell; a brother, James D. Coble; and a sister, Peggy Allen.
Surviving: her husband, Walter, Dallas; two sons, Josh Campbell and Eli Adams, both of Kearney, Mo.; a daughter, Donna J. Maher, Knoxville, Tenn.; a brother, Ronald Coble, Kansas City; and two sisters, Ginger Shanks, Kansas City, and Janet Rouse, Excelsior Springs.

HOPKINS, Mo. -- Ethel Mearl (Auten) Riley, 87, Hopkins, died Friday, Feb. 5, 1999, at a local hospital.
Mrs. Riley, a homemaker, was born on Jan. 30, 1912, in Grant City, Mo.
She was a member of Hopkins Baptist Church.
On Aug. 5, 1933, she married Glade Riley in Grant City, Mo. He survives of the home.
Mrs. Riley was preceded in death by an infant son, Carl; her parents, John and Mildred Auten; a brother, Howard Auten; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
