Elva M. Rottman
1917-1999
CHILLICOTHE, Mo. -- Elva Marie (Gibson) Rottman, 81, Chillicothe, died Friday, Feb. 5, 1999, at a Chillicothe health-care center.
Mrs. Rottman worked as a cook at a training school for more than 14 years. She was a member of the Calvary Baptist Church, Chillicothe.
Born July 23, 1917, in Linn County, Mo., Mrs. Rottman spent most of her life in Linn and Livingston (Mo.) counties.
On Dec. 14, 1936, she married Allen L. Ewing in Chillicothe. He died in 1948. She then married Maurice Rottman on Nov. 8, 1977, in Brookfield, Mo. He survives of the home.
Mrs. Rottman also was preceded in death by her parents, Alva L. and Veda E. Gibson; an infant son, Allen Ewing Jr.; a son, Gary Dean Ewing; eight brothers, John, Lowell, Oscar, Clarence, Floyd, Jim, Nelson and Bill Gibson; and an infant sister.
Additional survivors: a son, Max L. Ewing, Tyler, Texas; a step-son, Gary Rottman, Pleasant Valley, Mo.; a sister, Opal F. Ewing, Liberty, Mo.; seven grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Dorothea Smiley

FAUCETT, Mo. -- Dorothea (Ritchie) Smiley, 92, Faucett, died Saturday, Feb. 6, 1999, at a local hospital.
Mrs. Smiley, a homemaker, worked for Mid-Buchanan grade school as a custodian during the 1970s.
Born Jan. 1, 1907, in Buchanan County, Mo., she lived most of her life in the Faucett community and was a graduate of Faucett High School.
Mrs. Smiley was a member of Agency (Mo.) United Methodist Church, Sparta (Mo.) Homemakers Club, and Willowbrook Community Club.
On Oct. 14, 1928, she married Norman Smiley. He died in 1970.
Mrs. Smiley also was preceded in death by her parents, Robert E. and Naomi Ritchie; and a brother, Chesnut Ritchie.
Surviving: a son, Norman Jr., Agency; a daughter, Virginia Sohmitt, St. Joseph; two sisters, Virginia Maxey and Alice Spencer, both of St. Joseph; seven grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

Catherine A. Strecker
1913-1999
FALLS CITY, Neb. -- Catherine Ann (Niemoller) Strecker, 85, Falls City, died Friday, Feb. 5, 1999, at a Falls City hospital.
Mrs. Strecker worked at the Falls City Creamery and Campbell Soup Co., Tecumseh, Neb. She also worked at several cafes in the Falls City area.
Born Nov. 3, 1913, south of Barada, Neb., Mrs. Strecker was a member of SS. Peter & Paul Catholic Church, Falls City.
On May 12, 1936, she married Andrew Strecker, in Rulo, Neb. He died in 1966.
Mrs. Strecker also was preceded in death by a half brother, Charles Laux, Sr.
Surviving: two sons, August, Falls City, and David, Centralia, Mo.; four daughters, Marilyn Keen, Centralia, Mary J. Zimmerman, Falls City, Theresa Fankhauser, Beatrice, Neb., and Margaret Fisher, Rulo, Neb.; 16 grandchildren; and 25 great-grandchildren.

Helen E. Ussary
1905-1999
Helen E. (Eiman) Ussary, 93, St. Joseph, died Friday, Feb. 5, 1999, at a local health-care center.
Mrs. Ussary, a homemaker, also worked as a telephone operator for Southwestern Bell during her teen years until after World War II.
Born Dec 28, 1905, in Buchanan County, Mo., she lived in Cosby, Mo., and Smithville, Mo., before moving to Agency, Mo., in 1947, staying for 26 years. In 1973, she moved to St. Joseph.
Mrs. Ussary was a member of Agency Christian Church, Christian Women's Fellowship, of the church, and the Rock House Extension Club.
On Feb. 13, 1929, she married Clarence P. Ussary in St. Joseph. Together, they farmed land in Cosby, Agency, and Smithville. Her husband, Clarence, died in 1997.
Mrs. Ussary also was preceded in death by her parents, Christian and Amelia Eiman; two brothers, Emmitt and Glen Eiman; and two sisters, Glatha Goff and Clara M. Foster.
Surviving: two sons, John, Agency, and James, Goldsboro, N.C.; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Jennifer L. Walter

ATCHISON, Kan. -- Jennifer Lynn Walter, 19, Atchison, died Thursday, Feb. 4, 1999, following complications after childbirth at a Kansas City hospital.
Born June 27, 1979, in Atchison, Miss Walter attended high school in Mauston, Wis. and was attending the Mount St. Scholastica Academy.
Miss Walter was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church and the American Legion Auxiliary Post No. 6.
She was preceded in death by her father, Robert L.
Surviving: an infant daughter, Whisper Dawn; her mother, Kathryn Walter, of the home; six brothers, Jody, Effingham, Kan., Adrain Poff, Atchison, William, Ed Jr., Conrad and Scott Poff, all of Mauston; three sisters, Janette Martin, Effingham, Janice Taliferro, Berryton, Kan., and Annette Goodpasture, Atchison.

Richard Bailey

GILMAN CITY, Mo. -- Richard Bailey, 30, Gilman City, died Saturday, Feb. 6, 1999, at a Bethany (Mo.) hospital.
Mr. Bailey worked as a mechanic and a roofer for Action Contracting in Kansas City.
He was married to Valarie Hilliard.

TWENTYNINE PALMS, Calif. -- Alice Leona (Phillips) Barton, 93, Twentynine Palms, formerly of St. Joseph, died Monday, Feb. 1, 1999, at a hospital in Joshua Tree, Calif.
Born in St. Joseph on Dec. 25, 1905, Mrs. Barton, a homemaker, had lived in St. Joseph and California. She moved from St. Joseph to Twentynine Palms in 1990.
She was preceded in death by her husband, William C. Barton, in 1991; her parents, Fred and Cora E. Phillips; two brothers, Claude and John Phillips; and a sister, Marie Dennis.
Surviving: a son, Norman, Moreno Valley, Calif.; two daughters, Doris Cook, Twentynine Palms, and Carol Reynolds, Las Vegas; a sister, Margaret Gardner, St. Joseph; seven grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren.
The body was cremated. Inurnment was in Twentynine Palms.
Faye Bechtelheimer
1904-1999
SABETHA, Kan. -- Faye (Carpenter) Bechtelheimer, 94, Sabetha, died Sunday, Feb. 7, 1999, at a health-care center in Sabetha.
Mrs. Bechtelheimer had taught in the Sabetha area for two years. She and her husband, Harvey, owned and operated a dairy near Sabetha all of their married lives. She also had been a news correspondent for the Rock Creek community, north of Sabetha, and Apostolic Christian Village in Sabetha for the Sabetha Herald.
Born in Payne County, Okla., on May 4, 1904, she moved with her family to Sabetha in 1910. She was a graduate of the Sabetha high school.
On April 25, 1923, she married Harvey F. Bechtelheimer in Sabetha. They moved into Sabetha in 1983. He died in 1987.
She was a former member of the Church of the Brethren, Sabetha; and Rock Creek Brethren Church, north of Sabetha. She was a member of the Trinity Church of the Brethren, Sabetha; Retired Teachers Association and Sabetha Hospital Guild.
Mrs. Bechtelheimer also was preceded in death by a daughter, Marjorie K. Kesler; her parents, George and Anna Carpenter; a sister, Sybil Keck; and a grandchild.
Surviving: two sons, Daryl, Sabetha, and Paul, Gardner, Kan.; a brother, Kenneth Carpenter, Sabetha; a sister, Ina McClain, Sabetha; 11 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild.

Martha J. Cawley

Martha Jewell (White) Cawley, 89, St. Joseph, died Sunday, Feb. 7, 1999, at her home following a brief illness.
Mrs. Cawley, a homemaker, also had worked as a nurse's aide at Green Acres Rest Home in St. Joseph.
Born in DeQueen, Ark., on Nov. 20, 1909, she had lived in Gravitte, Ark., before moving to St. Joseph, where she spent most of her life.
She was a member of the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
On April 15, 1927, she married Ernest B. Cawley in DeKalb, Mo. He died in 1973.
Mrs. Cawley also was preceded in death by two sons, Roy D. and Richard E.; her parents, Young E. and Ruth A. White; three brothers, Floyd, Ira and James White; and two sisters, Lavina Lentz and Clara White.
Surviving: three sons, James E., Grain Valley, Mo., Ben B., St. Joseph, and Harold L. Unionville, Mo.; two daughters, Carol D. Adams, Bolckow, Mo., and Barbara J. Rowlett, both of St. Joseph; two sisters, Pearl Carlton, Elephant Butte, N.M., and Vera Callaway, St. Joseph; 14 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

Ola B. Chase

SABETHA, Kan. -- Ola Bernice (Mapes) Chase, 94, Sabetha, died Monday, Feb. 8, 1999, at a health-care center in Sabetha.
Mrs. Chase, born in Jackson County, Kan., on Aug. 8, 1904, was reared in the Granada community, south of Sabetha, after the death of her mother.
She was a former member of the Granada Church of the Brethren and a member of the Trinity Church of the Brethren in Sabetha.
On Dec. 23, 1923, she married Orville Chase. They made their home east of Granada. They farmed with her father, Gilliard Mapes, in the Granada community. Then he was a minister for the Washington Creek Church of the Brethren near Overbrook, Kan. He died in 1972. Then she moved into Sabetha and later to a health-care center there in 1998.
Mrs. Chase also was preceded in death by her parents, Gilliard B. and Margaret Mapes; and a sister, Thelma Childs.
Surviving: three sons, Kenneth, Sabetha, Loren, Coquille, Ore., and Marion L., Union, Neb.; a daughter, Vera Brock, Sun City West, Ariz.; 12 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.

Dennis A. Herrick

KANSAS CITY -- Dennis Aldred Herrick, 58, Kansas City, formerly of St. Joseph, died Thursday, Feb. 4, 1999, in Kansas City.
Mr. Herrick was employed by the Burlington-Northern Railroad of Kansas City as a conductor for more than 25 years. He also had served in the Army.
Born in Oxford, Neb., on Sept. 3, 1940, he graduated from the Oxford high school. After being relocated several times with the railroad, he lived in St. Joseph and moved to Kansas City in the early 1970s.
He was a member of the Masonic Lodge in Kansas City.
Mr. Herrick married the former Vicki Wallstrom. They were divorced. Later he married the former Pat Edwards. They also were divorced.
Mr. Herrick was preceded in death by his father, Chester A.; his stepfather, Victor Kahle; and a brother, Larry.
Surviving: his mother, Dorothy Kahle, Oxford; his adopted mother, Marie Stagemeyer, Oxford; three daughters, Denise, Burlington, Iowa, Lisa, Cleveland, and Denise Herrick, St. Joseph; a son, Dennis Jr., Denver; four brothers, Chester R. and Michael D., both of Oxford, Edward E., Blue Springs, Mo., and Paul R., Kearney, Neb.; a sister, Ortha M. Noltensmeier, Kearney; a half sister, Dena J. Herrick, Oxford; a half brother, David R., Oxford; and several grandchildren.

Lester C. Kelmel
1912-1999
Lester C. Kelmel, 86, St. Joseph, formerly of Maryville, Mo., died Sunday, Feb. 7, 1999, at his residence.
Mr. Kelmel had been a mechanic, farmer, and owned and operated a trailer court near Maryville.
Born in Barnard, Mo., on July 14, 1912, he resided in Maryville until moving to St. Joseph in 1993. He was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church in St. Joseph.
On Jan. 1, 1940, he married Mary M. Bailey in Parnell, Mo. She died in 1991. Then on May 29, 1993, he married Evelyn C. Budine in Maryville. She survives of the home.
Mr. Kelmel also was preceded in death by his parents, Valentine J. and Ida M.; a brother, Clarence; and two sisters, Catherine Heitman and Lottie Kimmet.
Additional survivors: a son, Terry, Maryville; two daughters, Carmelita Wiederholt, Ravenwood, Mo., and Izana Buetzer, Bethany, Mo.; a stepson, Ray Budine, Lincoln, Neb.; two stepdaughters, Barbara Ballard, St. Joseph, and Becky Cruz, St. Joseph; 15 grandchildren; and 24 great-grandchildren.

Cynthia W. Lunceford

Cynthia W. (Close) Lunceford, 83, St. Joseph, died Sunday, Feb. 7, 1999, at the home of a daughter, Martha Swardson, following a lengthy illness.
Mrs. Lunceford, born in Buckland, Mo., on Sept. 15, 1915, was a resident of St. Joseph since 1951. She was of the Baptist faith.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, John Wilson; her second husband, Walt Bundridge; her third husband, Marvin Lunceford; a son, Walter Wilson; her parents, Thomas C. and Alma Close; and a sister, Nina Tory.
Surviving: three daughters, Martha Swardson, St. Joseph, with whom she had made her home, Nina M. Holmes, St. Joseph, and Della M. Halter, Springfield, Mo.; seven sons, LeRoy Wilson, St. Roberts, Mo., John Wilson, Humansville, Mo., Arthur D. Wilson, Minonk, Ill., James Bundridge, Springfield, Harley and Roger Bundridge, both of St. Joseph, and Marvin Lunceford, Cosby, Mo.; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
