Virginia J. Jones
1918-1999
WESTON, Mo. - Virginia Jane (Peck) Jones, 80, Weston, died Friday, Feb. 26, 1999, at a health-care center in St. Joseph.
Mrs. Jones had been a secretary for ATM, and also had worked for Tiffany's Attic and J.F. Prichard, all of Kansas City.
Born in Rushville, Mo., on Oct. 19, 1918, she was a lifelong resident of Platte County, Mo. She was a member of the Christian Church and Hazelwood Swamp Club, both of Weston.
On June 7, 1938, she married James E. Jones in Kansas. He survives of the home. Mrs. Jones was preceded in death by her parents, Oliver and Virginia V. Peck; a brother, Oliver Peck; and a grandchild.
Additional survivors: three sons, Noel D., Weston, and James R. and Michael D., both of Towanda, Kan.; two brothers, Billy Peck, St. Joseph, and Jerry D. Peck, Weston; a sister, Rita Chuck, Pensacola, Fla.; eight grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.
Service: 2 p.m. Sunday, Vaughn Funeral Home, Weston. Burial: Sugar Creek Cemetery, Rushville. Family visitation: 6:30 to 8 tonight, at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the Alzheimers Foundation.

Joseph L. Lehew
1907-1999
HIAWATHA, Kan. - Joseph Leroy ''Roy'' Lehew, 91, Hiawatha, died Wednesday, Feb. 24, 1999, at his residence.
Mr. Lehew was engaged in farming for 55 years.
Born in Barnett, Mo., on July 4, 1907, Mr. Lehew had been engaged in farming for over 55 years. He moved to Brown County, Kan., and attended schools in that area.
He was a leader for the Hiawatha Jayhawkers 4-H Club, and a board member for the school district and a Brown County cattle organization.
In 1937, he married C. Grace Ham. She preceded him in death.
Mr. Lehew also was preceded in death by his parents, William R. and Malinda; three brothers, Ellis, Virgil and Leonard; and two sisters, Vertie Holder and Nellie Vonderschmidt.
Surviving: two sons, Harry D., St. Louis Park, Minn., and Robert J., Hiawatha; nine grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.
Memorial service: 10:30 a.m. Monday, First United Methodist Church, Hiawatha. The body has been cremated. A luncheon will be served following the service. Private family inurnment: Hiawatha Cemetery. Arrangements: Chapel Oaks Funeral Home, Hiawatha. Memorials may be made to the Hiawatha Community Hospital or First United Methodist Church in care of the funeral home, 519 N. First St., Hiawatha, Kan., 66434.

Hildred F. O'Dell
1914-1999
KIDDER, Mo. - Hildred Faye (Frost) O'Dell, 84, Kidder, died Thursday, Feb. 25, 1999, at the Cameron, Mo., hospital.
Mrs. O'Dell had been employed by the Kidder Telephone Office for 10 years and as a cook for the Hamilton, Mo., and Kidder schools.
Born in Mirabile, Mo., on Dec. 13, 1914, she was a lifelong resident of Caldwell County, Mo. She was a graduate of the Mirabile high school and a member of the Baptist Church in Kidder.
On Oct. 5, 1943, she married Chester O'Dell in Liberty, Mo. He died in 1995.
Mrs. O'Dell also was preceded in death by her parents, Benjamin and Gayle Frost; and two sisters, Alma O'Dell-Barnes and Wilma O'Dell.
Surviving: two daughters, Donna and Ina O'Dell, both of the home; a brother, Lyman Frost, Alamo, Texas; and three sisters, June Ford, Hamilton, and Roberta O'Dell and Winona Filley, both of Cameron.
Service: 10 a.m. Monday, Poland-Thompson Funeral Home, Cameron. Burial: Mirabile Cemetery. There is no scheduled family visitation. Memorials may be made to the Kidder Baptist Church.

John I. Smith
1938-1999
TOPEKA, Kan. - John Isaac ''Bobby'' Smith, 60, Topeka, formerly of Atchison, Kan., died Wednesday, Feb. 24, 1999, at his residence following a lengthy illness.
Born in Supulpa, Okla., on April 17, 1938, Mr. Smith attended the Atchison High School. He was a member of the Atchison Seventh-Day Adventist Church.
He was preceded in death by twin sons, Larry and Lawrence; his parents, Earl Sr. and Theola E.; three sisters, Betty J. White, Dorothy Cushinberry and Deloris Smith; and three brothers, Jimmy H., Earl Jr., and Lawrence.
Surviving: three daughters, Cheryl Brown, Sacramento, Calif., Joanna Thompson, Alaska, and Tayna Marshall, Topeka, Kan.; two sons, Brian S. and Bobby both of Topeka; and nine grandchildren.
Service: 1 p.m. Monday, Arensberg-Pruett Funeral Home, Atchison. Burial: Oak Hill Cemetery, Atchison. Family visitation: 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday, at the funeral home.

Naomi R. Stobaugh
1930-1999
Naomi R. (Boeh) Stobaugh, 68, St. Joseph, died Friday, Feb. 26, 1999, at a St. Joseph health-care center.
Born in St. Joseph on Oct. 2, 1930, Mrs. Stobaugh was a former homemaker. She was of the Protestant faith and a member of the Auxiliary to the Pony Express American Legion Post No. 359.
She was preceded in death by her husband, James Stobaugh; her parents, Henry and Ardeth Boeh; a sister, Florene Vollmer; and five brothers, F. Leon Boeh and four infants.
Surviving: two brothers, Dale Boeh, London, Ark., and Jerry Boeh, Las Vegas, Nev.; and three sisters, Connie Clark, St. Joseph, Geneva Stobaugh, Las Vegas, and Shirley Gielawowski, Colorado Springs, Colo.
Service: 1:30 p.m. Monday, Heaton-Bowman-Smith & Sidenfaden Chapel, St. Joseph. Burial: Memorial Park Cemetery, St. Joseph. Visitation: after 11 a.m. Sunday, at the chapel, where the family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday.

Gerald G. Bonderer
1907-1999
CHILLICOTHE, Mo. -- Gerald G. Bonderer, Chillicothe, died Friday, Feb. 26, 1999.
Mr. Bonderer was a registered Corriedale sheep breeder and a retired farmer. He also worked as the secretary of the State Corriedale Association. Mr. Bonderer also was a 4-H Leader, helping to establish the 4-H Fairgrounds, and was involved with the Retired Senior Volunteer Program, volunteering for the Meals on Wheels program.
Born Aug. 15, 1907, in Utica, Mo., he was a graduate of Utica High School. Mr. Bonderer also was a graduate of the Radio and Television Technology School, Kansas City.
Mr. Bonderer, a lifetime resident of Livingston County, Mo., was a member of St. Columban's Catholic Church, Chillicothe, and was a lifetime honorary board member of the Livingston County Farm Bureau.
On Jan. 17, 1942, he married Margaret L. Grouse in Chillicothe. She survives of the home.
Mr. Bonderer was preceded in death by his parents, Lawrence F. and Stella; four brothers; and two sisters.
Additional survivors: a daughter, Lana L. Henry, Gladstone, Mo.; and a brother, Raymond E., Kansas City.
Mass of Christian Burial: 11 a.m. Tuesday, St. Columban's Catholic Church, Chillicothe. Burial: Edgewood Cemetery, Chillicothe. Visitation: noon to 8 p.m. Monday, Norman-Wagy-Gordon Funeral Home, Chillicothe. A rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. Monday at the funeral home, with family visitation following until 8 p.m. Memorial contributions may be sent to St. Columban's Catholic Church or the 4-H Organization, in care of the funeral home.

Charlotte R. Cooper
1917-1999
Charlotte Rose (Kerr) Cooper, 81, St. Joseph, died Friday, Feb. 26, 1999, at a St. Joseph hospital.
Mrs. Cooper worked as part of the office staff of Quaker Oats for 29 years before retiring.
Born Oct. 3, 1917, in St. Joseph, she was a graduate of Central High School, St. Joseph.
Mrs. Cooper was a member of King Hill United Methodist Church, St. Joseph, where she was financial secretary as well as a board member. She also was a member of the Lovers Lane Chapter of ABWA, Quaker Oats Retirement Club, Young Matrons, Hyde School Parent/Teacher Association, and Order of the Eastern Star Radian chapter, No. 88, all of St. Joseph.
On Nov. 5, 1949, she married Robert G. Cooper in St. Joseph. He survives of the home.
Mrs. Cooper was preceded in death by her parents, Orren B. and Ila M. Kerr; and two brothers, Robert and Carl Kerr.
Additional survivors: a son, William C., St. Joseph; a sister, Elanor M. Kalis, Prairie Village, Kan.; and two grandchildren.
Service: 11 a.m. Monday, Clark-Sampson Funeral Home, St. Joseph. Burial: Odd Fellows Cemetery, Craig, Mo. Visitation: after 3 p.m. today at the funeral home, where the family will receive friends from 5 to 7 tonight.

Birdella B. Copeland
1903-1999
FALLS CITY, Neb. -- Birdella B. (Noland) Copeland, 95, Falls City, died Saturday, Feb. 27, 1999, at a Falls City hospital.
Mrs. Copeland was employed at the Abilene (Kan.) Telephone Co. before her marriage. She also taught Sunday school at Reserve United Methodist Church, Reserve, Kan., for many years.
Born Aug. 12, 1903, in Oak Hills, Kan., she was raised in the Oak Hills area.
Mrs. Copeland was a member of Reserve United Methodist Church, Reserve, until it discontinued services, then she was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Falls City. She also was a member of the Friendship Circle in a community southeast of Falls City.
On Nov. 12, 1924, she married Glen G. Copeland in Abilene, Kan. After their marriage, the couple lived in Talmage, Kan., before moving to a farm near Hiawatha, Kan., in 1926. In 1935, they moved to a farm in southeast of Falls City. He died in 1984.
Mrs. Copeland also was preceded in death by a daughter, Helen VonStrough; her parents, Delmar and Christina Noland; two brothers, John and Gerald Noland; and a sister, Geraldine Helen.
Surviving: a son, Gary G., St. Joseph; a sister, Anieta Jensen, Lakewood, Calif.; five grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
Service: 10 a.m. Tuesday, Dorr Funeral Home, Falls City. Burial: Mount Hope Cemetery, Hiawatha, Kan. Family visitation: 7 to 8:30 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Jess A. Coulter
1913-1999
HIAWATHA, Kan. -- Jess A. Coulter, 85, Hiawatha, died Friday, Feb. 26, 1999, at a Hiawatha health-care center.
Mr. Coulter worked laying pipeline and doing construction work. In 1948, he started selling used cars, and in later years, he sold real estate.
Born June 23, 1913, in Reserve, Kan., he was a lifelong resident of Brown County, Kan. His family later moved to Padonia, Kan., before settling in Hiawatha.
Mr. Coulter was a member of the Bricklayers Union.
On June 21, 1933, he married Hazel Dean in Hiawatha, where they lived their entire married life. She survives.
Mr. Coulter was preceded in death by a son; a daughter; his parents, Jim and Stella M.; three brothers; and two sisters.
Additional survivors: three sons, Charles, Lawrence, Kan., Gary, Falls City, Neb., Arlen, Kansas City; nine grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and nine step- great-grandchildren.
Service: 2 p.m. Tuesday, Chapel Oaks Funeral Home, Hiawatha. Burial: Hiawatha Cemetery. Visitation: after 5 p.m. today at the funeral home, where the family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m. Tuesday. Memorial contributions may be sent to the Jess Coulter Memorial fund, in care of the funeral home, 519 N. First St., Hiawatha, KS 66434.

Iva M. Gasper
1904-1999
Iva M. (Smallwood) Gasper, 94, St. Joseph, died Friday, Feb. 26, 1999, at a St. Joseph health-care center.
Mrs. Gasper was employed as an office worker for Branson Furnace Co. for more than 20 years before retiring. She also was a volunteer at the Albrecht-Kemper Museum of Art and the Noyes Home, and volunteered her time as an organist and pianist.
Born May 23, 1904, in St. Joseph, she was a graduate of Benton High School, St. Joseph.
Mrs. Gasper was a member of the Huffman United Methodist Church where she was active in the library committee and Quilters' Guild of the church. She also was a member of Order of the Eastern Star Areme Chapter 461.
In 1923 she married C. Leonard Gasper in St. Joseph. He died in 1973.
Mrs. Gasper also was preceded in death by her parents, Fred W. and Ottilie Smallwood, and a grandchild.
Surviving: a daughter, Esther M., St. Joseph; a son, Donald L., Topeka, Kan.; two grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
Service: 1:30 p.m. Monday, Meierhoffer Family Funeral Care, St. Joseph. Burial: Memorial Park Cemetery, St. Joseph. Family visitation: 2 to 4 p.m. today at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be sent to the American Cancer Society or a charity of the donor's choice.
