Finest Jack Phroper, 78, St. Joseph, died Sunday, Feb. 28, 1999, at a St. Joseph hospital.
Mr. Phroper was employed by Armour and Co. for 42 years until retiring.
Born in Baxter, Mo., on Feb. 16, 1921, he lived most of his life in St. Joseph. He was a member of the Carnegie Baptist Church.
Mr. Phroper was preceded in death by his wife, Maxine, in 1989; his parents, John and Nellie; and three brothers and three sisters.
Surviving: five sons, Tracy, Ronnie, John, Donnie and Monty, all of St. Joseph; five daughters, Juanita Marriott, Barbara Ellis and Stacy Bertelsen, all of St. Joseph, Brenda Phroper of the home and Jackie Winder, Easton, Mo.; 19 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.

Marguerite F. Pollard

INDEPENDENCE, Mo. -- Marguerite Fern (Hill) Pollard, 87, Independence, formerly of Braymer, Mo., died Sunday, Feb. 28, 1999, at a hospital in Independence.
Mrs. Pollard, born in Conesville, Iowa, on Jan. 22, 1912, had been employed as a nurse's aide at several health-care centers.
On Sept. 27, 1934, she married Milton L. Pollard in Carrollton, Mo. He is deceased.
Mrs. Pollard also was preceded in death by her parents, Daniel F. and Bessie L. Hill; a brother, Eddie Hill; three sisters, Lorena R. Evans, Dorothy M. Braymer and Viola M. Hill; and a brother, Robert L. Hill.
Surviving: two daughters, Carol J. Frazier, Independence, and Vera M. Garraway, Huntsville, Ala.; two sisters, Bertha I. Gibson and Mary J. Null, both of Braymer, Mo.; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Elizabeth Smith

Elizabeth (Seehaus) Smith, 68, St. Joseph, formerly of Mound City, Mo., died Monday, March 1, 1999, at a St. Joseph hospital.
For 32 years, Mrs. Smith had been employed as a telephone operator for the Southwestern Bell Telephone Co. until retiring.
Born in Troy, Kan., on Sept. 18, 1930, she had loved in St. Joseph prior to moving to Mound City. She recently returned to St. Joseph.
On June 24, 1962, she married Herschel L. Smith in Miami, Okla. He died in 1998.
Mrs. Smith also was preceded in death by her parents, Ben and Emma Seehaus; and a sister, Helen Dalton.
Surviving: a son, Greg, San Ramon, Calif.; a brother, William Seehaus, Riverside, Calif.; and two sisters, Rose Roberts, La Mirada, Calif., and Margaret Diggs, Kansas City.
Service: 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Heaton-Bowman-Smith & Sidenfaden Chapel, St. Joseph. The body will be cremated following the service. Norlan E. Steele

ORLANDO, Fla. - Norlan Earl Steele, 65, Orlando, formerly of Grant City, Mo., died Friday, Feb. 26, 1999, at an Tampa, Fla., hospital.
Mr. Steele was retired from a career in the Navy having served in both the Korean and Viet Nam Wars. He was a member of the American Legion Post No. 0019 in Orlando.
Born Aug. 29, 1933, in Grant City, he was a graduate of the Bedford, Iowa, High School.
Mr. Steele was preceded in death by his parents, Bright C. and Eva B. Steele; and a brother, Chester.
Surviving: two sons, David, Sunrise, Fla.,and Dennis, Houston; a sister, Leta Peve, Maryville, Mo.; three brothers, Dorrel, Casa Grande, Ariz., Almon, Nixa, Mo.,and David, Pueblo, Colo.; and two grandchildren.

Gertrude K. Swyhart

Gertrude K. (Walter) Swyhart, 91, St. Joseph, died Saturday, Feb. 27, 1999, at a St. Joseph health-care center.
Mrs. Swyhart had been employed as a line supervisor for the Quaker Oats Co. for 30 years.
Born in St. Joseph on Jan. 26, 1908, she was a lifelong resident of St. Joseph.
Mrs. Swyhart was a member of the Brookdale Presbyterian Church, Parent-Teacher Association and Order of Eastern Star.
She was preceded in death by her husband, George W.; her parents, Louis and Margarite M. Walter; and two brothers, Leroy and Leroyce Walter.
Surviving: two sons, Leroy, Austin, Texas, and Leroyce W., Oak Ridge, N.J.; nine grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Edgar A. Thomas, 83, St. Joseph, died Friday, Feb. 26, 1999, at a St. Joseph hospital following a lengthy illness.
Mr. Thomas had been employed by the former Swift and Co. in St. Joseph and later retired from the Quaker Oats Co.
Born in St. Joseph on Jan. 1, 1916, he was a lifelong resident of St. Joseph.
He was a member of the First Mount Union Baptist Church in St. Joseph.
Mr. Thomas was preceded in death by his wife, the former Guyetta Overstreet, in 1986; his parents, Milton and Ella; a brother, Vernon; a sister, Leah E. Slaughter; and a grandchild.
Surviving: six sons, Ronald A. Thomas Sr., Edgar E. Thomas and William Carriger, all of St. Joseph, Harold M. Thomas, Riverside, Calif., Andre Carriger, South Carolina, and LeRoy F. Patricia L. Weigand

FALLS CITY, Neb. - Patricia L (Bell) Weigand, 67, Falls City, died Saturday, Feb. 27, 1999, in a Falls City health-care center.
Mrs. Weigand was a bookkeeper for Chaney Furniture of Falls City for 30 years.
Born Feb. 17, 1932, in Kansas City, Mrs. Weigand attended Colby, Kan. High School and was a graduate of LaCrosse, (Kan.,) High School. She moved to Falls City in 1963 from Hoisington, Kan.
Mrs. Weigand was a member of First United Methodist Church, Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary No. 1765 and the Order of Eastern Star all of Falls City.
Mrs. Weigand was preceded in death by her husband, Dick Weigand in 1977; and her son, Douglas.
Surviving: two daughters, Kathy Weigand, Glendale, Cal., and Karen Zurbriggen, Sunland, Cal.; a brother, Gary St. John, Buffalo Grove, Ill.; and three grandchildren.
Service: 2 p.m., Friday, Clark Funeral Home, Falls City. The body will be cremated. Family visitation: from noon to 2 p.m. Friday.
May K. Wines

SABETHA, Kan. - May K. (White) Wines, 100, died Monday, Mar. 1, 1999, at a Sabetha health-care center.
Mrs. Wines taught in several rural schools from 1917 to 1922, she and her husband farmed until retiring to Sabetha in 1950.
Born May 31, 1898, north of Sabetha, she was a graduate of Sabetha High School.
Mrs. Wines was a member of First Congregational Church in Sabetha, where she taught junior high Sunday school class and vacation Bible school. She also was a member of the Women's fellowship of the church. She was a member of the D.S.R. Club, Nemaha County Retired Teachers Association, and was nominated "Women of the Year" by the Business and Professional Women's Club. In 1965, she helped to organize the Albany(Kan.) Museum and Historical Society and many of the displays in the museum.
On May 3, 1922, she married Garnett Wines in Albany. He died in 1963.
Mrs. Wines also was preceded in death by her parents, Edward E. and Lillie M. White; two brothers, Orval and Ralph in infancy; two sisters Dora Pederson, and Helen Priest.
Surviving: two nieces, Marjorie McFall, Sabetha, and Lorene Wiseman, Edmond, Okla.; four nephews, Lee White, Sabetha, Ralph White, Denver, Lewis White, Houston, and Ken Priest, Raytown, Mo.
Service: 10:30 a.m. Friday, First Congregational Church, Sabetha. Burial: Sabetha Cemetery. Family visitation: 7 to 8:30 p.m.Thursday, at the Popkess Mortuary Chapel, Sabetha. Theresa Wood

GARDEN GROVE, Calif. - Theresa (Sanger) Wood, 61, Garden Grove, formerly of St. Joseph, died Tuesday, Feb. 23, 1999, at her residence of cancer.
Mrs. Wood had been employed as a teacher's aide for the Garden Grove School District for about 15 years. She also had worked as an operator for the Southwestern Bell Telephone Co. in St. Joseph.
Born in St. Joseph on April 29, 1937, she moved from St. Joseph to Garden Grove 40 years ago. She was a graduate of the Convent of the Sacred Heart in St. Joseph.
Mrs. Wood was a member St. Barbara's Catholic Church in Santa Ana, Calif., and a former member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in St. Joseph.
On Nov. 27, 1958, she married Herman R. Wood in St. Joseph. He survives of the home.
Mrs. Wood was preceded in death by her parents, Andrew and Gertrude Sanger.
Additional survivors: seven sons, Herman Jr., Rock and Cory, all of Orange County, Marty, Waukesha, Wis., Monte and Trent, both of the home, and Damian, Rocklin, Calif.; two daughters, Lisa Garrett and Theresa H. Thompkins, both of Orange County; four brothers, Jake Sanger, Huntington Beach, Calif., and Jim, Bob and Andy Sanger, all of St. Joseph; three sisters, Joan Lowe, Colorado Springs, Colo., and Dorothy Madden and Trudy Lohman, both of Cummings, Kan.; and eight grandchildren.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held Thursday, Feb. 25, at St. Barbara's Catholic Church in Santa Ana Burial was in the Fairhaven Cemetery in Orange, Calif. Arrangements were by the Fairhaven Memorial Park of Orange. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.
Ivan R. Greene
1924-1999
STEWARTSVILLE, Mo. -- Ivan Ronald Greene, 74, Stewartsville, died Monday, March 1, 1999, at a health-care center in St. Joseph from complications from Alzheimer's disease.
Mr. Greene was employed by the Sundt Contracting Co. in Arizona. He also worked as a locomotive engineer for the Southern Pacific and Missouri Pacific Railroads in Arizona and Kansas for 20 years. He farmed until retiring in 1987.
Born in St. Joseph on July 2, 1924, he was reared in DeKalb County, Mo., north of Stewartsville, and attended the Crab Orchard School. He moved with his parents to Arizona at age 11, and the family returned in 1958 to Stewartsville, where they farmed for almost 40 years.
He graduated from the Tucson, Ariz., Senior High School and attended the University of Arizona at Tucson. From 1942 to 1945, he served in the Navy during World War II.
Mr. Greene was a member of the Maple Grove Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, north of Stewartsville, where he served as presiding elder. He was a former member of the DeKalb County Missouri Farm Bureau and Pony Express Barbershop Chorus in St. Joseph, and a member of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers Union, Phoenix, of which he was a past secretary-treasurer.
On May 28, 1949, he married Bonnie J. Robinson in Phoenix. She survives of the home in Stewartsville.
Mr. Greene was preceded in death by his parents, Raymond and Delpha E.

BETHANY, Mo. -- P.R. "Skinny" Hansell, 84, Bethany, formerly of Ridgeway, Mo., died Tuesday, March 2, 1999, at a Bethany health-care center.
Mr. Hansell, a farmer, was born Aug. 12, 1914, in Harrison County, Mo., and was a graduate of Ridgeway High School.
Mr. Hansell was a board member of the Rose Hill Cemetery Board, the Harrison County Group Home Board, and was a member of National Farmers Organization.
On June 25, 1938, he married his wife, Deloris L. She died in 1997.
Mr. Hansell also was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Daisy; and two sisters, Claudine Hansell and Velma Courter.
Surviving: a daughter, Susan Legaard, Bethany; and two sisters, Lavo Courter, Bethany, and Voncille Utterback, Gallatin, Mo.

William E. Lieffring

William Edward Lieffring, 51, St. Joseph, died Tuesday, March 2, 1999, at his home.
Born in St. Joseph on June 14, 1947, Mr. Lieffring was a self-employed truck driver. A lifelong resident of St. Joseph, he was a member of St. James Catholic Church.
On June 22, 1978, he married Sue Kellison in Venita, Okla. She survives of the home.
Mr. Lieffring was preceded in death by his mother, Ella M.

Lola Liggett

LAURIE, Mo. -- Lola Jackson Liggett, 71, Laurie, formerly of St. Joseph, died Tuesday, March 2, 1999, at her residence.
Mrs. Jackson Liggett owned and operated Lola's Beauty Shop in St. Joseph for many years until retiring to the Lake of the Ozark's area in 1972.
She was born on Aug. 27, 1927, in Hartford, Kan.
Mrs. Jackson Liggett was a den mother for the Cub Scout program, active with Boy Scout Troop 12, and the Parent Teacher Association at South Park School.
Mrs. Jackson Liggett was preceded in death by her previous husband, Fred Jackson; and a brother, Stanley Link.
Surviving: her husband, Leonard Liggett of the home; two sons, Rick Hamman, Salina, Kan., and Rick Hamman, Parkville, Mo.; a twin sister, Lula Hunt, Emporia, Kan,; two brothers, Darrell Link, Augusta, Kan., and Steve Link, Tacoma, Wash.; and four grandchildren.
