Rena L. Schmidt
1917-1999
ROCK PORT, Mo. -- Rena Lily (Cooper) Schmidt, 81, Rock Port, formerly of St. Joseph, died Friday, March 12, 1999, at a Rock Port health-care center.
Mrs. Schmidt was a nurses aide in Santa Barbara, Calif., during World War II. In 1944, she returned to Missouri and attended Castor's Beauty Academy, St. Joseph. She worked in St. Joseph as a beautician for many years.
Born Aug. 3, 1917, southeast of Rock Port, she attended West Bend School, southwest of Rock Port.
Mrs. Schmidt was a member of the First Lutheran Church, Rock Port.
On May 29, 1945, she married Fritz Schmidt in Wathena, Kan. In 1948, they moved to a farm west of Stewartsville, Mo. He died in 1991.
Mrs. Schmidt also was preceded in death by her parents, Henry and Minnie Cooper; her stepfather, Heiko Cooper; a sister, Frieda Clemens; and an infant brother, Henry H. Cooper.

Lilly C. Seetin

ATCHISON, Kan. -- Lilly C. (Bergseth) Seetin, 87, Atchison, died Friday, March 12, 1999, at an Atchison health-care center.
Mrs. Seetin was a maid in Sioux Falls, S.D., before moving to Kansas City, where she worked as a maid for Macy's Department Store. She also worked for the Atchison County, Kan., Nursing Home for 11 years, retiring in 1974.
Born Aug. 15, 1911, in Howard, S.D., she attended school near Howard.
Mrs. Seetin was a member of the Belleview Lutheran Church, near Howard. She also was a member of the Ward Parkway Lutheran Church, Kansas City, Kan., and the Trinity Lutheran Church, Atchison, where she served on the Altar Guild, the Tabetha Society, Evangelism Society, Kennedy Callers, and the Lutheran Women's Missionary League.
On Nov. 5, 1950, she married Durel Seetin in Kansas City, Kan. They moved to Atchison in 1951. He survives of the home.
Mrs. Seetin was preceded in death by her parents, Matthew and Kari Bergseth; four sisters; and three brothers.
Additional survivors: a son, Lee, Thayer, Neb.; a stepson, John, Atchison; a stepdaughter, Mildred Seetin-Arroya, Anaheim, Calif.; eight grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Virginia Southwood

COLUMBIA, Mo. -- Virginia (Whitchurch) Southwood, 90, Columbia, formerly of St. Joseph and Savannah, Mo., died Wednesday, March 10, 1999, at a Columbia health-care center.
Mrs. Southwood was employed by the University of Kansas Medical Center-Kansas City and the University of Missouri Medical Center-Columbia, and the University of Missouri - Columbia, where she retired as an associate professor of social work in 1979.
Born Aug. 10, 1908, in Savannah, she was a graduate of Savannah High School. She received her bachelor's degree from Drake University, Des Moines, Iowa, and her master's degree from the University of Missouri-Columbia.
She lived many places during her lifetime, including Savannah, St. Joseph, South Africa and Columbia.
Mrs. Southwood was a member of the Missouri United Methodist Church, Columbia, where she taught Sunday school and was a member of the United Methodist Women. She also was involved in the Retired Senior Volunteer Program and PEO chapter, both of Columbia; Missouri Council on Aging; National Association for Social Workers; and the League of Women Voters.
On Aug. 2, 1931, she married Eric J.M. Southwood in St. Joseph. He died in 1954.
Mrs. Southwood also was preceded in death by a daughter, Margaret E.; her parents, Felix and Celectie Whitchurch; and two brothers, Robert K. and Frank Whitchurch.
Surviving: a son, James E., College Park, Ga.; a stepchild; and a step great-grandchild.

Eugene O. Barker

Eugene O. "Gene" Barker, 91, St. Joseph, died Friday, March 12, 1999, at a St. Joseph hospital.
Mr. Barker was employed as a salesman with the Duro-Test Corp. for several years.
Born Jan. 22, 1908, in Horton, Kan., Mr. Barker was raised in Horton before moving to St. Joseph in 1930.
Mr. Barker was a member of the Baptist faith.
On June 1, 1957, he married Lorraine F. Hedrick. She died in 1992.
He also was preceded in death by his parents, Roy T. and Eleda M.; and two sisters, Gladys Wright and Elizabeth Brown.
Surviving: a brother, William R., Leavenworth, Kan.; and a nephew, Leonard T. Wright, St. Joseph.

William C. Boteler
1932-1999
BRIDGEPORT, Conn. -- William Connett Boteler, 66, Bridgeport, formerly of St. Joseph, died Oct. 13, 1998, in Bridgeport.
Mr. Boteler was the engineering manager for product standards and reliability for the Harvey Hubbell Co. in Bridgeport. During the Korean War, Mr. Boteler served in the Army.
Born Oct. 4, 1932, in St. Joseph, Mr. Boteler also was a former resident of Kansas City, Northport, N.Y., and for the past 18 years he had resided in Bridgeport.
Mr. Boteler was a graduate of Central High School in St. Joseph, and a graduate of the University of Missouri- Columbia where he received his bachelor of science in engineering.
He was a member of the Tau Beta Pi Engineering Honor Society, Pi Tau Sigma Mechanical Engineering Honor Society and the Pi Mu Epsilon Honor Society. He also was a member of the National Electrical Manufacturing Association. Mr. Boteler had been an inventor and received many patents, most notably he invented the respirator device used on board commercial airlines.
Mr. Boteler was preceded in death by his parents Dr. George and Lucille Boteler.
Surviving: his wife, Charla, of the home; a daughter, Allison M., of the home; and a son, William C. Jr., Washington, D.C.
Private graveside service and burial: Wednesday, Mount Mora Cemetery, St. Joseph. Services are under the direction of Meierhoffer Family Funeral Care, St. Joseph.
The Rev. Rex Lyon

BETHANY, Mo. -- The Rev. Rex Lyon, 94, Bethany, died Thursday, March 11, 1999, at a Bethany hospital.
The Rev. Lyon, a minister, served at United Methodist churches in the following areas: White Oak, Matkins, Heath, McFall, Mount Moriah, High Point, Pleasant Ridge, Laredo, Mable, Winston, Altamont, Civil Bend, Haseville, New Hampton, Shady Grove, Osborn, Hill Chapel, Denver, Ridgeville and Blythedale, all of Missouri.
The Rev. Lyon was born July 8, 1904, in Neodesha, Kan.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Berniece, in 1993; his parents, James H. and Anna; a brother, Wayne; and two sisters, Gertude Sweet and Alice Lett.
Surviving: two sons, Rex Jr., New Hampton, and William F., New Albany, Miss.; a daughter, Georgia L. Lacy, Bethany; three brothers, Francis, St. Joseph, Alvin, Chillicothe, Mo., and Steven, Wichita, Kan.; two sisters, Wilma Parkhurst, Spickard, Mo., and Patrica Warden, Goldsboro, N.C.; 19 grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren.

Margaret I. Panigot

HIAWATHA, Kan. -- Margaret I. (Knudson) Panigot, 89, Hiawatha, formerly of St. Joseph, died Saturday, March 13, 1999, at a Hiawatha health-care center.
Born March 9, 1910, in Everest, Kan., Mrs. Panigot was a graduate of Willis (Kan.) High School. She was raised near Everest and lived most of her life in Brown County, Kan.
She married Archie Panigot on June 10, 1939. After their marriage, they lived in St. Joseph and in later years, moved to Horton, Kan. Her husband, Archie, died in 1972. After his death, she moved to Arbor Knoll Apartments, Horton, for 11 years and then to Pemberton Village Apartments, Hiawatha.
Mrs. Panigot also was preceded in death by her parents, Edward O. and Gertine L. Knudson; and two brothers.
Surviving: a sister, Ethel Townsend, Grass Valley, Calif.; a brother, Francis Knudson, Florence, Ariz.; and her caregiver, Audrey Roland, Hiawatha.

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Emmett Charles Rhodes, 83, Washington, formerly of Wathena, Kan., died Friday, March 12, 1999, at a Washington health-care center.
Mr. Rhodes worked as an accountant for the United States government before his retirement.
Born July 3, 1915, in St. Joseph, Mo., he served in the Navy during World War II and the Korean War.
Mr. Rhodes was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Pearl; and a sister, Maurine.

Steven G. Schuman

OREGON, Mo. -- Steven G. Schuman, 48, Oregon, died Friday, March 12, 1999, at a St. Joseph hospital.
Mr. Schuman, a farmer, also drove a truck for Gordon Quarry, Forest City, Mo.
Born Sept. 24, 1950, in St. Joseph, he was a lifelong resident of the Oregon area, graduating from Oregon High School.
Mr. Schuman was a member of the Forest City United Methodist Church.
On June 19, 1971, he married Carole A. Meng. She survives of the home.
Mr. Schuman was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, William and Margaret Schuman; and his maternal grandparents, Bertram and Jennie Welsch.
Surviving: three sons, Derek, Dustin, and Drew, all of the home; his parents, Glen and Margaret, Oregon; two brothers, Joe, Fillmore, Mo., and Roger, Savannah, Mo.; and two sisters, Sharon Sipes and Karon Fansher, both of Oregon.

MOUND CITY, Mo. -- Helen Margaret (Gorman) Stokes, 91, Mound City, died Thursday, March 11, 1999, at a Mound City health-care center.
Born March 7, 1908, in Bigelow, Mo., Mrs. Stokes was a graduate of Mound City High School.
Mrs. Stokes, a homemaker, was a member of the First Christian Church and Royal Neighbors of America, both of Mound City; and the Christian Women's Fellowship, Craig, Mo.
On Feb. 8, 1927, she married Vincennes Stokes in Atchison, Kan. After their marriage, they lived in Craig until moving to Mound City in 1979. He died in 1986.
Mrs. Stokes also was preceded in death by her parents, John and Ella Gorman; and four brothers, Cecil, Frank, Bowen, and John Gorman.
Surviving: a daughter, Betty Barnes, Omaha, Neb.; a brother, Jesse Gorman, Maryville, Mo.; a sister, Ruth Anthony, Shawnee, Kan.; a grandchild; and five great-grandchildren.

Virginia L. Oliver

MARYVILLE, Mo. -- Virginia Lee (Rasnic) Oliver, 84, Maryville, died Monday, March 15, 1999, at a Maryville health-care center.
Mrs. Oliver was born in Barnard, Mo., on Dec. 8, 1941. She lived on a farm in the Barnard area for nearly 50 years before moving to Maryville 10 years ago. She graduated from Guilford (Mo.) High School.
A homemaker, she also was a sales representative for Fuller Brush Co. She was a member of Barnard United Methodist Church; United Methodist Women; Baker Homemakers Club; and Barnard Garden Club, all of Barnard.
On May 7, 1938, she married Lee B. Oliver in St. Joseph. He survives of the home.
Mrs. Oliver was preceded in death by her parents, John B. and Sarah Rasnic; three sisters, Dora Thrasher, Ermil Lyle and Myrtle Drydale; and a brother, Ulis Rasnic.
Additional survivors: three daughters, Carolyn Sutter, St. Louis, Connie Kennedy, Bolckow, Mo., and Elaine Gilmore, Baton Rouge, La.; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Mildred A. O'Neal

OREGON, Mo. -- Mildred A. (McCulley) O'Neal, 93, Oregon, formerly of Mound City, Mo., died Sunday, March 14, 1999, at an Oregon health-care center.
Mrs. O'Neal was a homemaker and teacher. She taught in rural schools in Holt County, Mo., in 1942, in Mound City, Mo., schools and later in Craig, Mo., schools.
Born Feb. 15, 1906, west of Bigelow, Mo., Mrs. O'Neal, was a graduate of Mound City High School and received her teaching certificate from Maryville State Teachers College, Maryville, Mo.
Mrs. O'Neal was a member of United Methodist Church, Mound City, Eastern Star holding the position of worthy matron, Home Extension Club, United Methodist Women's organization, Retired Teachers Association, and Clio Club.
On May 6, 1928 she married Joseph A. O'Neal in Mound City. They farmed in northwest Missouri and southwestern Iowa before moving to their farm near Big Lake in 1943. They retired to Mound City in 1968. He died in 1986.
Mrs. O'Neal also was preceded in death by a son, Benton; her parents, George and Christena McCulley; two sisters, Thelma Neff and Nellie Yeo; and a grandchild.
Surviving: a son, Samuel, Omaha, Neb.; a daughter, Lila Harp, Oklahoma City; seven grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
