Leona L. Sandrock
1911-1999
FALLS CITY, Neb. -- Leona L. (Colson) Sandrock, 87, Falls City, died Saturday, April 17, 1999, at a Falls City health-care center.
Mrs. Sandrock was born Oct. 19, 1911, in Dawson, Neb. She was raised southwest of Dawson and graduated from Honey Creek High School. She attended Peru (Neb.) State Teachers College.
After college, she returned to the family farm southwest of Dawson and lived there until moving to Falls City in 1971.
On Nov. 29, 1975, she married Kenneth G. Sandrock in Falls City. He died in 1998.
Mrs. Sandrock was active in the former Bethany and Four Mile Church southwest of Dawson, where she was a Sunday school superintendent, Sunday school teacher and camp counselor for many years.
She was a member of First United Methodist Church in Falls City, where she was a past president of the United Methodist Women; past president of Falls City Nile Club; and Falls City Garden Club.
Mrs. Sandrock also was a member of Falls City Chapter No. 225 Order of Eastern Star and Falls City Women's Club.
She also was preceded in death by her parents, Walter D. and Della May Colson; and five brothers, Lorenzo, Ralph, Ira, Carl and Ray Colson.
Surviving: a stepson, Kenneth Wm., Kansas City; a stepdaughter, Shirley Paroczai, Dayton, Minn.; and four step-grandchildren.
Service: 10 a.m. Thursday, First United Methodist Church, Falls City. Burial: Steele Cemetery, Falls City. Family visitation: 8 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, Dorr Funeral Home, Falls City. The body will arrive at the church at 8:30 a.m. Thursday.
Elsie M. Sneden
1911-1999
OVERLAND PARK, Kan. -- Elsie May (Summerville) Sneden, 87, Overland Park, formerly of Chillicothe, Mo., died Sunday, April 18, 1999, at an Overland Park hospital.
Mrs. Sneden was employed in the snack bar at the state capitol in Topeka, Kan., for 30 years.
Born in Chillicothe on July 31, 1911, she lived in Chillicothe until moving to Topeka in 1936 and Overland Park in 1993.
She attended the Chula, Mo., School and was a member of the Potwin Presbyterian Church in Topeka. She served on the Republican Election Board in Topeka for 50 years.
Mrs. Sneden was preceded in death by her husband, Ivan, in 1966; a daughter, Evelyn Chaffin; and her parents, William and Lula Summerville.
Surviving: a son, Wesley L., Overland Park; a brother, Edmond Summerville, Chillicothe; 10 grandchildren; and 25 great-grandchildren.
Graveside service and burial: 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, Wheeling, Mo., Cemetery. Visitation: noon to 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Norman-Wagy-Gordon Funeral Home, Chillicothe, where the family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m. Wednesday.
Mary S. Valencia
OVERLAND PARK, Kan. -- Mary S. Valencia, 79, Overland Park, died Sunday, April 18, 1999, at the home of her son Robert in Overland Park.
Mrs. Valencia was a cook at the Milburn Junior High School in Overland Park for 11 years.
Born in Independence, Kan., she lived in the Overland Park area since 1970.
She was a member of the Queen of the Holy Rosary Catholic Church, Overland Park, and auxiliary to the Dwight Cowles American Legion Post No. 370.
Mrs. Valencia was preceded in death by her husband, Manuel J.; and a son, Manuel J. Jr.
Surviving: five other sons, Gregory, Lee's Summit, Mo., Vincent, St. Joseph, Steven, Broomfield, Colo., Christopher, Shawnee, and William, Olathe, Kan.; four daughters, Sally O'Bryant, Overland Park, Susan White, Rosendale, Mo., Patricia Woods, Maple Grove, Minn., and Angela Powell, Phoenix; five brothers, Alfred Ramirez, Bonner Springs, Kan., Gus Ramirez, Overland Park, George Ramirez, Stockton, Mo., Raul Ramirez, Kansas City, and Vincent Ramirez, Schoenchen, Kan.; two sisters, Sally Daffron, Orlando, Fla., and Ophelia Daffron, Overland Park; 27 grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren.
Mass of Christian Burial: 10 a.m. Wednesday, Queen of the Holy Rosary Catholic Church, Overland Park. Burial: St. Joseph Cemetery, Shawnee. Family visitation: 6:30 to 8 tonight at the Amos Family Chapel, Shawnee, where a prayer service will be conducted at 7 tonight. Irene L. Potter
1915-1999
SAVANNAH, Mo. -- Irene L. (Polk) Potter, 83, Savannah, died Saturday, April 24, 1999 at a Maryville, Mo., hospital.
Mrs. Potter was a graduate of the Maryville State Teachers College, Maryville. She was a schoolteacher at Liberty School, in rural Barnard, Mo. She then taught school at Bartlett, Iowa, for a number of years. She was then employed by the Missouri Division of Family Services for 15 years before retiring.
Mrs. Potter was a member of Antioch Christian Church, Fillmore, Mo., Missouri State Retired Teachers Association and the Business and Professional Women.
Born Nov. 21, 1915, in Fillmore, she was a resident of Andrew County, Mo., for most of her life. She lived in Fillmore from 1949 to 1967, when she moved to Savannah.
In 1942, she married Donald R. Potter. He died in 1965.
Mrs. Potter also was preceded in death by her parents, Frank and Minty Polk; and a sister Ruth Goodloe.
Surviving: a son, David F., Bolckow; a sister, Marjorie Kinder, California; and three grandchildren

Alice Reed
1904-1999
PORT ARTHUR, Texas -- Alice Reed, 94, Port Arthur, formerly of St. Joseph, died Friday, April 23, 1999, at a Nederland, Texas, hospital.
Born Dec. 16, 1904, in King City, Mo., she spent her youth in King City and St. Joseph, moving to Port Arthur in 1936.
Mrs. Reed was a member of the First Christian Church, Port Arthur, and The Daughters Of The American Revolution.
She was preceded in death by her first husband John Pritchard; her second husband, Aubrey Reed; and her parents.
Surviving: two stepdaughters Ann Washington, Edinburg, Texas, and Frances Jackson, Salisbury, N.C., several step-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren; and Elsie Morris, Port Arthur, who cared for her.
Private services will be held under the direction of Meierhoffer Family Funeral Care, St. Joseph, with burial in Memorial Park Cemetery, St. Joseph.
William E. Tillman
1930-1999
William E. "Bill" Tillman Sr., 69, St. Joseph, died Saturday, April 24, 1999, at a local health-care center from complications associated with cancer.
Mr. Tillman, a prominent gospel musician in the St. Joseph area, also worked for Swift Co., St. Joseph, for 16 years and for Mead Products, St. Joseph, for 32 years. He served in the Army during the Korean War.
Born March 28, 1930, in St. Joseph, he was a lifelong resident of St. Joseph. He was a graduate of the former Bartlett High School, St. Joseph, and attended Lincoln University for two years.
Mr. Tillman was on the board of directors of Stationary Credit Union, St. Joseph, and was a member of Mead Products' 25-Year Club. He also served as minister of music at Hosley Chapel I.C.M. Church, where he was recently honored for 60 years of music. He was a member of the Acappella Choir and Community Chorus, both of St. Joseph.
On Jan. 5, 1963, he married Helen M. Johnson in Elwood, Kan. She survives of the home.
Mr. Tillman was preceded in death by his parents, Edward and Lillie.
Additional survivors: two sons, William Jr. and Kevin L., both of St. Joseph; three daughters, Lynn M., Regina R. and Sharon D., all of St. Joseph; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Gleva M. Wheat
1906-1999
LATHROP, Mo. -- Gleva Mae (Davis) Wheat, 92, Lathrop, formerly of Holt, Mo., died Sunday, April 25, 1999, at a Liberty, Mo., hospital.
Mrs. Wheat co-owned a restaurant in Holt for more than 20 years. She also sold eggs at the City Market in Kansas City every weekend for more than 50 years.
Born Oct. 30, 1906, near Holt in Clinton County, Mo., she had lived in the Holt area most of her life.
Mrs. Wheat was a member of the Holt Christian Church.
On Jan. 23, 1929, she married Apolys Wheat in Liberty. He died in 1980.
Mrs. Wheat also was preceded in death by her parents, Willis and Fannie Davis.
Survivors: There are no known survivors.
Service: 2 p.m. Wednesday, Morris Bailey Chapel, Holt. Burial: Antioch Cemetery, Holt. Visitation: 1 to 2 p.m. Wednesday at the chapel.
Albert J. Whitebird
1958-1999
HORTON, Kan. -- Albert James Whitebird, 40, Horton, died Saturday, April 24, 1999, in Topeka, Kan., due to injuries sustained in an automobile accident.
Mr. Whitebird worked in the construction field as a plumber. He also coached at the Kickapoo Nation Schools and had worked in the maintenance Department at Haskell Indian Nation University, Lawrence, Kan.
Born July 3, 1958, in Horton, he attended Haskell Indian Nation University and Emporia (Kan.) State University before returning to Atchison, Kan.
Mr. Whitebird was a member of Kickapoo Tribe, west of Horton; Drum Religion, west of Horton; Horton Lake View Country Club, Horton; Powhattan Alumni; and several bowling leagues.
In 1977, he married Vesta Ross, they were later divorced. He then married Debbie Wahwahsuck in February 1992, in Horton. She survives of the home.
Mr. Whitebird was preceded in death by his father, Leslie J.; and two brothers, Leslie H. and Alvin L.
Additional survivors: three daughters, Leslie J. Scuffham and Kristine Whitebird, both of Wichita, Kan., and Shayla Whitebird, of the home; a stepdaughter, April Wahwahsuck, Horton; two stepsons, Robert and Raymond Wahwahsuck, both of the home; his mother, Norma J., Horton; two brothers, Arlan Whitebird and Curtis Simon, both of Horton; and two grandchildren.

Lucy M. Wilson

ATCHISON, Kan. -- Lucy M. (Burg) Wilson, 62, Atchison, died Saturday, April 24, 1999, at her home.
Mrs. Wilson was employed at the Atchison Daily Globe; Benedictine College Print Shop; and Andra's Paint Store until the early 1980s.
Born Aug. 11, 1936, in Atchison, she was a graduate of Mount St. Scholastica Academy, Atchison.
Mrs. Wilson was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Atchison; Atchison Business and Professional Women's Association; and Atchison Mother Singers.
On Nov. 28, 1963, she married James C. Wilson in Atchison. He survives of the home.
Mrs. Wilson was preceded in death by her parents, Roman and Nina Burg.
Additional survivors: three daughters, Anne Johnson, Shawnee, Kan., Amy Wilson, Independence, Mo., and Sharon Cannon, Lenexa, Kan.; a brother, Lawrence Burg, Owensville, Ind., and a grandchild.

Vern C. Sager
1904-1999
STANBERRY, Mo. Vern C. Sager, 94, Stanberry, died Sunday, April 25, 1999, at a Stanberry health-care center.
Mr. Sager was a plasterer and brick layer, worked as a meat packer for Wilson Packing Co. in Chicago.
Born Oct. 17, 1904, in Gentry County, Mo., Mr. Sager moved at age 12 to Canada where he worked on a ranch for a time before moving back to Stanberry.
Mr. Sager was a member of the First Baptist Church of Stanberry.
Mr. Sager was preceded in death by his wife, Margie E. Sager, his parents, Henry and Mary J.; six brothers, Elmer, Clarence, Jasper, Irvin, Willard, and Artie; and two sisters, Gertrude Tallmadge and Marie Wilson.
Surviving: four daughters, Peggy Henggeler, Victorville, Calif., Verna J. Brown, Kensington, N.H., Sharon S. Mercer, Stanberry, Mo., Colleen J. Sager, Excelsior, Springs, Mo.; a son, Vern C. Jr., Stanberry, Mo.; 17 grandchildren; 37 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Shirley Schaeffer
1907-1999
Shirley (Brideson) Schaeffer, 91, St. Joseph, died Sunday, April 25, 1999, at a St. Joseph health-care center following a brief illness.
Mrs. Schaeffer had been a registered nurse at the Kings Daughters Hospital in Perry, Iowa, for 16 years.
Born in Bayard, Iowa, on Nov. 20, 1907, she had lived in Kansas City from 1943 until moving to Yale, Iowa, in 1971 and St. Joseph in 1989.
She was a member of the Brookdale Presbyterian Church, St. Joseph; and a former member of the Yale United Methodist Church, where she was active in United Methodist Women.
On Nov. 20, 1932, she married Harold H. Schaeffer in Perry. He died in 1984.
Mrs. Schaeffer also was preceded in death by her parents, George and Elma Brideson; a sister, DeVee Haden; and two brothers, Lee and Lowell Brideson.
Surviving: a daughter, Susie Yardley, St. Joseph; two sisters, Georgia Beauvais, Zephyrhills, Fla., and Ava M. Francis, Yale; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Pearl L. Schwab

CHILLICOTHE, Mo. Pearl Lula (Martin) Schwab, 85, Chillicothe, died Sunday, April 25, 1999, at a Chillicothe health-care center.
Born Jan. 11, 1914, in Gary, West. Virginia, and was a graduate of a Los Angeles Calif. High School, specializing in advanced seamestre and costume design.
Mrs. Schwab was a member of the Zion Church near Chillicothe.
On May 27, 1935, she married Carl E. Schwab in Maryville, Calif. Soon after, they moved to the family farm near Chillicothe. He survives of the home.
Mrs. Schwab was preceded in death by her parents, William D. and Mattie F. Martin; two brothers, and three sisters.
Additional survivors: a son Carl Jr., Edmond, Okla.; two daughters, Dixie L. Christison, and Nellie J. Gaston, both of Chillicothe; six grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
