Mary J. Marsengill
1908-1999
LINEVILLE, Iowa -- Mary Jane (Bay) Marsengill, 90, Lineville, died Saturday, April 24, 1999, at a hospital in Corydon, Iowa.
For 39 years, Mrs. Marsengill was a teacher for rural schools in Clio, Iowa, and Lineville. She also was an organist and pianist for church and community events.
Born in Stephen County, Kan., on Aug. 10, 1908, she was reared in Lineville and a graduate of the Lineville high school. She earned a bachelor of science degree in education from Northeast Missouri State University at Kirksville.
Mrs. Marsengill was a member of the Lineville United Methodist Church, Corydon chapter, Order of the Eastern Star No. 355 and Fidelity Rebekah Lodge, Lineville.
On Dec. 21, 1945, she married Dwight R. Marsengill. He died in 1983.
Mrs. Marsengill also was preceded in death by a son, Jerry; her parents, Oren E. and Dolly M. Bay; and a sister, Myrtle Bell.
Surviving: a daughter, Dorothy Stockman, Juliaetta, Idaho; three grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
Service: 11 a.m. Thursday, United Methodist Church, Lineville. Burial: Evergreen Cemetery, Lineville. Visitation: after 8 a.m. today at the Greenlee-Middleton Funeral Service, Lineville. There is no scheduled family visitation. Memorials may be made to the Lineville United Methodist Church in care of the funeral home, 310 West Third St., Lineville, IA 50147.

Leona E. Nestler
1904-1999
ORANGE, Calif. -- Leona E. Nestler, 94, Orange, formerly of Atchison, Kan., died Saturday, April 24, 1999, at a health-care center in Orange.
For 40 years, Miss Nestler was a machine operator for the Atchison Leather Products in Atchison until retiring in 1972.
Born in the Parnell community near Atchison on Aug. 15, 1904, she attended the Atchison high school. She resided in California since 1985.
Miss Nestler was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church in Atchison.
She was preceded in death by her parents, August A. and Minnie; and a brother, Carl.
Surviving: a sister, Ruthana Marino, Buena Park, Calif.
Graveside service and burial: 3 p.m. Thursday, Mount Vernon Cemetery, Atchison. There is no scheduled family visitation. Memorials may be made to the Trinity Lutheran School Scholarship Fund. Arrangements: Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home, Atchison.

Chuck K. Smith
1969-1999
Chuck Kenneth Smith, 29, St. Joseph, died Monday, April 26, 1999, at a St. Joseph hospital.
Mr. Smith was born in San Diego on July 18, 1969, and lived in St. Joseph for four years.
On Sept. 2, 1994, he married Vicky Wright. She survives of the home.
Additional survivors: three sons, Craig Smith, Oregon state, and Joseph Carrion and Mark Monroe, both of St. Joseph; three daughters, Cassandia Smith, Oregon, Carole Morse, Florida, and Krystle Monroe, St. Joseph; his mother, Carole McConathy, Coeur D' Alene, Idaho; three brothers, Richard and Robert Blythe, both of California, and Doug Smith, Coeur D' Alene; and a sister, Rusty Blythe, Portland, Ore.
The body has been cremated. There will be no visitation or service. Inurnment will be at a later date. Arrangements were by the Rupp Funeral Home in St. Joseph.

Geraldine M. Walker
1942-1999
BARNARD, Mo. -- Geraldine M. (Clary) Walker, 56, Barnard, formerly of St. Joseph, died Monday, April 26, 1999, her residence.
Born in Troy, Kan., on June 19, 1942, Mrs. Walker lived in St. Joseph for many years until moving to Bolckow in 1977. She was a resident of Barnard for 10 years.
She was a member of the Christian faith and attended the Open Door Ministries at Bolckow. She also was a Girl Scout leader.
On Oct. 30, 1960, she married Donald L. Walker in Plattsburg, Mo. He survives of the home.
Mrs. Walker was preceded in death by her parents, Lloyd P. and Mary E. Clary; a brother, Raymond L. Clary; and a sister, Alma L. Clary.
Additional survivors: six sons, Alan L., DeKalb, Mo., Jeffrey R. and Wesley S., both of Barnard, Gregory K., Lincoln, Neb., Robert B., Bolckow, Mo., and David L., Rea, Mo.; two daughters, Patricia A. Manship, Barnard, and Pamela K. Jones, Bolckow; three brothers, Harold and Bernard Clary, both of Troy, Kan., and Jody Sutton, Brigham City, Utah; a sister, Floey Thomas, Sabetha, Kan.; and 13 grandchildren.
Service: 10 a.m. Thursday, Meierhoffer Family Funeral Care Savannah Chapel, Savannah, Mo. Burial: Walnut Grove Cemetery, Bolckow. Visitation: after 2 p.m. today at the funeral chapel, where the family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 tonight.

Julia I. Zeit
1913-1999
HIAWATHA, Kan. -- Julia I. (Thrift) Zeit, 85, Hiawatha, formerly of Atchison, Kan., died Monday, April 26, 1999, at a health-care center in Hiawatha.
Mrs. Zeit was a medical aide at the Atchsion Hospital for 20 years. She also was a dorm mother at the Highland Community College until retiring.
Born in Atchison on Dec. 2, 1913, she attended the Atchison high school.
Mrs. Zeit was a member of St. Benedict's Catholic Church, where she was active in the Altar Society; Home Demonstration Unit; auxiliary to the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post and auxiliary to the Atchison Hospital, all of Atchison.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph, in 1978; her parents, Harry and Charlotte Thrift; and several brothers and sisters.
Surviving: three sons, Richard, Denton, Kan., David, Fairview, Kan., and Gary, Huntsville, Ark.; a daughter, JoAnn Burke, Horton, Kan.; a brother, Sam Thrift, Tonganoxie, Kan.; a sister, Betty Heflin, Belton, Mo.; 15 grandchildren; and 31 great-grandchildren.
Mass of Christian Burial: 10 a.m. Thursday, St. Louis Catholic Church, Good Intent, Kan. Burial: church cemetery. Prayer service: 7 tonight at the Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home, Atchison, where the family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 tonight. Memorials may be made to the Highland Ambulance Fund or Masses.

George A. Aholtz
1920-1999
VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. -- George A. Aholtz, 79, Virginia Beach, formerly of St. Joseph, died Sunday, April 25, 1999, at a hospital in Virginia Beach.
Mr. Aholtz served in the Marine Corps for 30 years, attaining the rank of master sergeant. He also was a civil service employee at the Pentagon in Washington, D.C., for several years.
Born in St. Joseph on Feb. 1, 1920, he lived in St. Joseph until 1938 and was a resident of Virginia Beach about five years.
Mr. Aholtz was preceded in death by his wife, the former Dorothy Griffith; his parents, William and Della; and a brother, Dan.
Surviving: a son, David, Virginia Beach; four sisters, Virginia Morris, Dorothy Hawman and Mary Harrison, all of St. Joseph, and Elizabeth Patten, Medford, Ore.; and three grandchildren.
A memorial service was held Wednesday, April 28, in Virginia Beach. Burial will be at a later date in the Quantico, Va., National Cemetery, with full military rites.

Claudia D. Arthur-Culey
1951-1999
UNION STAR, Mo. -- Claudia D. Arthur-Culey, 48, Union Star, formerly of St. Joseph, died Thursday, April 29, 1999, at her home after a lengthy illness.
Born in St. Joseph on April 28, 1951, Mrs. Arthur-Culey lived most of her life in St. Joseph and in Union Star for nine years.
Surviving: a son, David Amos, Union Star; two daughters, Angela Amos, Kansas City, and Toni Amos, St. Joseph; her mother and stepfather, Donna R. and Don Smith, Union Star; six sisters, Sue Watts, Gladstone, Mo., Debbie McNeely, Troy, Kan., Tammie Smith and Patty Mooney, both of St. Joseph, Vickie Nocks, Excelsior Springs, Mo., and Donna Johnson, Kansas City; two brothers, Rick Nocks and Scott Elifrits, both of St. Joseph; and four grandchildren.
Service: 3 p.m. Monday, Meierhoffer Family Funeral Care, St. Joseph. The body will be cremated after the service. Visitation: after noon Sunday at the funeral home, where the family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Sunday.

Willard Brooks
1931-1999
PLATTSBURG, Mo. -- Willard Brooks, 68, Plattsburg, formerly of Platte City, Mo., died Friday, April 30, 1999, at a health-care center in Plattsburg.
Mr. Brooks was a lineman for the United Telephone Co. for 15 years. He also worked as an electrical mechanic for Trans World Airlines for 27 years until retiring in 1992.
Born in Farley, Mo., on March 23, 1931, he was a lifelong resident of Platte County, Mo.
He served in the Air Force during the Korean War.
Surviving: a son, Robert, Lakeville, Minn.; a daughter, Linda Horseman, Platte City; two brothers, Carl, Plattsburg, and Jim, Platte City; two sisters, Mary E. Gibbs, Shenandoah, Iowa, and Helen Gwinn, Weston, Mo.; and three grandchildren.
Service: 10 a.m. Monday, Rollins Funeral Home, Platte City. Burial: Graceland Cemetery, Weston, Mo. Family visitation: 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the Hoover Christian Church at Hoover, Mo.

Emma E. Christman
1914-1999
Emma E. (Thompson) Christman, 84, St. Joseph, died Thursday, April 29, 1999, at her residence.
Mrs. Christman and her husband, Leo, owned and operated Leo's Bakery in St. Joseph.
Born in Horton, Kan., on Sept. 13, 1914, she was a resident of St. Joseph since 1939. She was a member of St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church.
On Feb. 26, 1938, she married Leo J. Christman. He died in 1990.
Mrs. Christman also was preceded in death by her parents, Chris and Anna Thompson; a brother, Frank Thompson; and a sister, Jennie Gordon.
Surviving: two sons, John, Des Moines, Iowa, and Frank, St. Joseph; three daughters, Nancy Farrow, Patricia Wiedmaier and Joan Giles, all of St. Joseph; a niece, Susan Gordon of the home; 11 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
Prayer service: 10 a.m. Monday, Heaton-Bowman-Smith & Sidenfaden Chapel, St. Joseph. Burial: Ashland Cemetery, St. Joseph. Visitation: after 9 a.m. today at the chapel, where the family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 tonight, and a rosary will be recited at 7:30 p.m. Sunday.

James J. Creviston
1909-1999
James J. Creviston, 90, St. Joseph, died Thursday, April 29, 1999, at a St. Joseph health-care center.
Mr. Creviston was a co-owner of the Creviston and Son Jewelry Manufacturing Co. for more than 60 years until retiring in 1983.
Born in Kansas City on Nov. 14, 1909, he was a resident of St. Joseph since 1911.
Mr. Creviston was a member of St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus Council No. 571 and St. Joseph General Assembly No. 569, of which he was a 4th degree. He was a former member of the Optimist Club.
On Aug. 24, 1927, he married Dorothea A. Caviezel in Atchison, Kan. She is deceased.
Mr. Creviston also was preceded in death by his parents, Jefferson T. Sr. and Mary E.; and a brother, Monsignor Lawrence P.
Surviving: three daughters, Mary Alice Hathaway, Pueblo, Colo., Joan Oitto, Denver, and Nancy Maltsbarger, St. Joseph; a sister, Catherine N. Hurst, Henderson, Nev.; a brother, Jeff T., St. Joseph; 11 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren.

Jesse E. Ehlers
1907-1999
KANSAS CITY -- Jesse E. Ehlers, 92, Kansas City, formerly of Osborn, Mo., died Thursday, April 29, 1999, at an Independence, Mo., hospital.
Mr. Ehlers was a sales manager for the Reliable Life Insurance Co. in Kansas City until retiring in 1972.
Born in Osborn on April 16, 1907, he lived in Kansas City since 1953. He was a graduate of the Osborn high school.
Mr. Ehlers was a member of the Kaiser-Frazier Auto Collectors Club, of which he was a national treasurer; Kansas City chapter of the American Guild of Organists, of which he was president; Masonic Lodge, Blue Springs, Mo.; and Havelock Lodge, Independent Order of Odd Fellows.
On Aug. 6, 1931, he married Margaret Gross in Osborn., She died in 1998.
Mr. Ehlers also was preceded in death by a daughter, Kathryn Hammond; and his parents, Fred and Adie.
Surviving: a son, John F., Santa Barbara, Calif.; a sister, Velma Millard, Osborn; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Service: 11 a.m. Monday, Poland-Thompson Funeral Home, Cameron, Mo. Burial: Osborn Evergreen Cemetery. Family visitation: 10 to 11 a.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Karen S. Haenni
1945-1999
MIDLOTHIAN, Texas -- Karen Sue (Voltmer) Haenni, 53, Midlothian, formerly of St. Joseph, died Wednesday, April 28, 1999, at her residence.
Mrs. Haenni was a secretary for GTE.
Born in St. Joseph on Sept. 13, 1945, she had resided in Texas for 30 years. She was a graduate of Central High School in St. Joseph.
Mrs. Haenni was a member of the Eagle Mountain International Church and a former member of the Lutheran faith.
Surviving: her husband, David of the home; a daughter, Christine Kaumo, Laramie, Wyo.; her parents, Wilbur and Eleanor Voltmer, St. Joseph; two sisters, Gail Voltmer, St. Joseph, and Cheryl Harms, Turlock, Calif.; and a grandchild.
Service: 1:30 p.m. Monday, Meierhoffer Family Funeral Care, St. Joseph. Burial: Memorial Park Cemetery, St. Joseph. Family visitation: 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Edith Henson
1911-1999
BETHANY, Mo. -- Edith (Close) Henson, 87, Bethany, died Wednesday, April 28, 1999.
Mrs. Henson was a caregiver at health-care centers.
Born July 5, 1911, in Mound City, Mo., she was a member of St. Oswald's Episcopal Church in Skidmore, Mo.
On May 14, 1929, she married Leon Henson. He died in 1991.
Mrs. Henson also was preceded in death by a son, J.C.; her parents, Charles W. and Beatrice Close; three brothers, Edward, John and Earnest Close; and a great-grandchild.
Surviving: three daughters, Phyllis Keeling and Diana Barrett, both of Littleton, Colo., and Beatrice Wade, Honey Creek, Iowa; a brother, Philip Close, Skidmore; 12 grandchildren, two step-grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and four step great-grandchildren.
Service: 1:30 p.m. Sunday, Roberson Funeral Home, Bethany. Burial: Miriam Cemetery, Bethany. Visitation: after 3 p.m. today at the funeral home, where the family will receive friends from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. Sunday.
