MAYSVILLE, Mo. -- Della Rose (Cullom) Heitgerd Schorfheide Horner, 87, Maysville, died Thursday, April 29, 1999, at the Cameron, Mo., hospital.
Mrs. Horner was employed by the collector's office at the St. Charles County, Mo., courthouse.
Born in Case, Mo., on May 26, 1911, she was a former longtime resident of St. Charles.
Mrs. Horner was a member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church, St. Charles; and attended the Prince of Peace Lutheran Church, Cameron. She also was a member of the Junior Chamber of Commerce, League of Women Voters, Historical Society and Alexandria chapter, Order of the Eastern Star, all of St. Charles.
She was preceded in death by her husbands, Ralph Heitgerd, Edmons Schorfheide and Charles Horner; two daughters, Sharon A. and Martha K. Schorfheide; two sons, Dennis Schorfheide and Don Heitgerd; and her parents, George and Viola Cullom.
Surviving: three granddaughters, Sharon Kiehl, Maysville, Margaret Tollerton, Columbia, Mo., and Marcia Rogers, Detroit Lakes, Minn.; and six great-grandchildren.
Service: 2 p.m. today, Prince of Peace Lutheran Church, Cameron. Burial: 1:30 p.m. Sunday, Oak Grove Cemetery, St. Charles. Arrangements: Bram Funeral Home, Maysville.
John E. McKennon Sr.
1917-1999
LAS VEGAS -- John E. McKennon Sr., 82, Las Vegas, formerly of Troy, Kan., died Wednesday, April 28, 1999, at a hospital in Las Vegas.
Mr. McKennon was an executive officer for a national hotel chain until his retirement.
Born in Fort Smith, Ark., on March 30, 1917, he was reared in Arkansas
Mr. McKennon was a member of St. Benedict's Catholic Church, Bendena, Kan.; American Hotel and Motel Association, of which he had served on the executive board; California Hotel and Motel Association, of which he was a president; and several civic groups. He also was a member of the California Hotel and Motel Association Hall of Fame.
On Jan. 28, 1946, he married Mary F. Heeney in Albuquerque, N.M. She survives of the home.
Mr. McKennon was preceded in death by his parents, Dr. Parma D. and Inez; and two brothers, Parma D. Jr. and Pierce.
Additional survivors: two sons, James H., Las Vegas, and John E. Jr., Baltimore, Md.; and five grandchildren.
Mass of Christian Burial: 10:30 a.m. Monday, St. Benedict's Catholic Church, Bendena. Burial: St. Benedict's Cemetery, Bendena. Chester M. Edwards
1935-1999
PARKVILLE, Mo. -- Chester M. Edwards, 63, Parkville, formerly of St. Joseph, died Wednesday, May 5, 1999, at a Kansas City, Kan., hospital.
Mr. Edwards had been employed as a maintenance manager for Cathedral Towers in Kansas City, Mo., for the past five years.
For 33 years, he served in the Army, Air National Guard, Navy and Seabees until retiring in 1989. While in the service, he participated in the Korean War and Berlin Crisis.
After the military, he worked as a county health inspector in Platte County, Mo., for 35 years.
Born in Tarkio, Mo., on Dec. 14, 1935, he moved from there to St. Joseph, where he had spent most of his life. He had been a resident of Parkville for nine years.
Mr. Edwards was a member of the Catholic Church and Cpl. Fred Seifert Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 1668, St. Joseph.
Surviving: two sons, Danny, St. Joseph, and Rick, Denver, Colo.; a daughter, Terre DeFoe, St. Joseph; three brothers, Charles Osborn, Kansas City, Mo., Cedric Edwards, Kansas City, Kan., and Albert Branson, St. Joseph; two sisters, Jesse Farrell and Doris Carpenter, both of St. Joseph; and seven grandchildren.

Vernita Egbert

WINDSOR, Mo. Vernita (Williams) Egbert, 88, Windsor, died Thursday, May 6, 1999, at a health-care center in Windsor.
Born in Leeton, Mo., on Aug. 31, 1910, Mrs. Egbert was a former homemaker and a member of the First Christian Church in Windsor.
On Oct. 17, 1935, she married Charles H. Egbert in Liberty, Mo. He died in 1984.
Mrs. Egbert also was preceded in death by her parents, John A. and Viola E. Williams.
Surviving: two sons, Gene, St. Joseph, and Stanley, Windsor; two sisters, Wilma Scheerer, Mission, Kan., and Ethel Burton, Clinton, Mo. and five grandchildren.

Franklin D. George
1935-1999
MOUND CITY, Mo. -- Franklin D. George, 64, Mound City, died Wednesday, May 5, 1999, at a Kansas City hospital following a yearlong illness.
Mr. George had been semi-retired from being self-employed at George's C-Store in Mound City. He also had owned and operated a service station in Kansas City for 10 years, and had been associated with ADT Alarm Systems. Mr. George had served in the Air Force.
Born in Gower, Mo., on Jan. 30, 1935, he had lived in Kansas City and had resided in Mound City since 1978.
Mr. George was a member of the Open Door Ministries of Northwest Missouri.
On Dec. 30, 1977, he married Caroline J. Markt in Kansas City. She survives of the home.
Mr. George was preceded in death by his parents, Oscar and Sarah.
Additional survivors: a daughter, Janel Tait, Kansas City; a son, Shane, Mound City; a stepdaughter, Paula M. Fuller, Forest City, Mo.; two sisters, Mary Currans, St. Joseph, and Ruth Kellogg, Kansas City; four brothers, John, Vernon and Harry, all of St. Joseph, and Herb, Deep Water, Mo.; and eight grandchildren.

R. Stanley Gex
1912-1999
SCIOTA, Pa. -- R. Stanley Gex, 87, Sciota, formerly of St. Joseph, died Wednesday, April 28, 1999, at a hospital East Stroudsburg, Pa., following a brief illness.
Mr. Gex began his teaching career in rural schools in Nodaway County, Mo., and later at the Ridgeway, Mo., high school. He also had taught at Central High School in St. Joseph.
After serving in the Navy during World War II, he continued in the teaching profession at the University of Cincinnati and Eastern Michigan University in Ypsilanti, Mich., where he served as dean of the college of education and dean of international studies.
Mr. Gex also was employed by the United States Government to lead educational projects in Somalia and Swaziland, Africa.
Born in Nodaway County on Jan. 29, 1912, he graduated from the Graham, Mo., high school. He earned a bachelor of science degree from Northwest Missouri State Teachers College at Maryville, Mo., and a master's degree and doctorate in education from the University of Missouri in Columbia, Mo. He retired to Eufaula, Ala., and later moved to Willis, Texas; and Sciota about six months ago.
On Oct. 7, 1938, he married Mary K. Brady in St. Joseph. She died in 1997.
Mr. Gex also was preceded in death by his parents, William B. and Mary; two brothers, Joe and Donald; and a sister, Mary Brown.
Surviving: three daughters, Jeannie Gex, Sciota, Karen Asfour, Amman, Jordan, and Nancy Jones, Mount Crested Butte, Colo.; two brothers, W. Brooking, St. Joseph, and Virgil E., Cincinnati, Ohio; a sister, N. Louise Gex, Nodaway County; eight grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
A private family graveside service and burial were held Wednesday, May 5, at the Prairie Home Cemetery in Graham. Arrangements were by the Lanterman & Allen Funeral Home in East Stroudsburg.
James H. Gibson
1918-1999
KING CITY, Mo. -- James H. Gibson, 80, King City, died Wednesday, May 5, 1999, at a St. Joseph hospital.
Mr. Gibson, a retired farmer, had served as mayor and city alderman for the City of King City. He also was a former member of the King City R-I School Board, of which he was a past president.
Born in Empire Prairie, Mo., on Sept. 18, 1918, he was a lifelong resident of King City. He served in the Marine Corps during World War II.
Mr. Gibson was a member of the Presbyterian Church, King City, where he served as an elder, and Sunday School superintendent and teacher. He also was a member of the King City American Legion Post No. 132; Tri-County Historical Museum, King City, of which he had been president and board member; and King City Community Theatre Group. He was a former member of the Empire Hustlers 4-H Club in Empire Prairie, Mo.
On Nov. 28, 1943, he married Joy Jameson in King City. She survives of the home.
Mr. Gibson was preceded in death by a daughter, Jan L. Gibson; his parents, James A. and Mayme; his stepmother, Nellie Gibson; and a stepsister, Geneva McKee.
Additional survivors: a son, Craig, Albany, Mo.; a daughter, Kathy Albers, Bendena, Kan.; a sister, Katherine Guest, King City; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Ethyl A. Hulett

STEWARTSVILLE, Mo. -- Ethyl Adelia (Burger) Hulett, 94, Stewartsville, died Wednesday, May 5, 1999, at the hospital in Cameron, Mo.
Born in Irwin, Iowa, on May 28, 1904, Mrs. Hulett attended school in Harlan, Iowa. She had been a longtime resident of Elkland, Mo., until moving to Stewartsville in 1996.
A homemaker, she was a member of the Seventh-day Adventist Church in Marshfield, Mo.
On Aug. 2, 1919, she married Edward Hulett in Irwin. He died in 1966.
Mrs. Hulett also was preceded in death by two sons, Floyd E. and Pearl M.; two daughters, Flora J. Hulett and Sylvia L. LeBeck; her parents, Charlie and Alvara Burger; two brothers, Cleveland and Clifford Burger; and two sisters, Edna Hansen and Eva Comstock.
Surviving: three sons, Eldon, Chillicothe, Mo., Donald, Minneapolis, Minn., and Dean, Chattanooga, Tenn.; five daughters, Rebecca Andries, Turlton, Okla., Juanita Howell, Portland, Texas, Delilah Scull, Elkland, Ethyl J. Canada, Aurora, Ill., and Rachael Farr, Stewartsville; 43 grandchildren; 111 great-grandchildren; 107 great-great-grandchildren; and four great-great-great-grandchildren.

Guy A. Israel

Guy Aubrey Israel, 50, St. Joseph, died Wednesday, May 5, 1999, at his home.
Mr. Israel had been employed as an psychiatric aide by the Northwest Missouri Psychiatric Rehabilitation Center for several years.
Born in Aurora, Mo., on April 8, 1949, he had spent most of his life in St. Joseph.
He was a graduate of Lafayette High School and served in the Army during the Vietnam War.
Mr. Israel was preceded in death by his parents, Guy O. and Lavon H.
Surviving: a brother, Charles R., Marionville, Mo.; and a sister, Jerre A. Essary, Crane, Mo.
Memorial service: at a later date, in Crane. The body has been cremated. There will be no visitation. Arrangements: Heaton-Bowman-Smith & Sidenfaden Chapel, St. Joseph.
James W. Poettgen
1933-1999
GALESBURG, Ill. -- James William Poettgen, 65, Galesburg, formerly of Savannah, Mo., died Wednesday, May 5, 1999, at his residence.
Mr. Poettgen had been employed as a printer for the Savannah Reporter, Savannah, Mo.; Canton Daily Ledger, Canton, Ill.; and Register-Mail, Galesburg, where he had worked for 33 years until retiring.
Born in Freeburg, Mo., on Dec. 8, 1933, he was reared and graduated from high school there. He attended Lincoln University in Jefferson City, Mo., and served in the Navy for four years during the Korean War.
Mr. Poettgen was a member of the St. Aloysius Catholic Church, Wataga, Ill., where he served on the parish council and as trustee, and was a member of the choir. He also was a member of the Galesburg Typographical Union, of which he was president and secretary-treasurer; and Polka Club of the Iowa-Eastern chapter.
On Aug. 30, 1958, he married Joan E. Loethen in St. Thomas, Mo. She survives of the home.
Mr. Poettgen was preceded in death by two sons, Mark and Jay; his parents, Edwin and Emma; and a brother, Leroy.
Additional survivors: two daughters, Judi Luepke, Parris Island, S.C., and Ralph, Jefferson City; three brothers, Edwin, Ferguson, Mo., Harold, Columbia, Mo., and Ralph, Jefferson City; three sisters, Jeanette Fick, Marilyn Poettgen and Eileen Bondurant, all of Jefferson City; and six grandchildren.

DESTIN, Fla. -- Nancy K. Biggerstaff, 56, Destin, formerly of St. Joseph, died Monday, April 5, 1999, at a hospital in Destin after a 12-year illness of breast cancer.
Miss Biggerstaff was employed as office manager for Roommakers II, Destin, for the past 11 years.
Born in St. Joseph on Nov. 26, 1942, she was a graduate of LeBlond High School, St. Joseph.
Miss Biggerstaff lived in the Kansas City area for 20 years before moving to Destin in 1984.
She was a member of Bosom Buddies Cancer Support Group in Florida.
Miss Biggerstaff was preceded in death by her parents, Hollie and Anna Biggerstaff.
Surviving: two cousins, Sharon Stevenson, St. Joseph, and Roberta Nelson, Branson, Mo.
The body has been buried in Mount Olivet Cemetery, St. Joseph. Arrangements: Emerald Coast Funeral Home, Fort Walton Beach, Fla.
Christina M. Chapin

RUSHVILLE, Mo. -- Christina Marie Chapin, 23, Rushville, died Thursday, May 13, 1999, at a St. Joseph hospital as the result of a train accident near Atchison, Kan.
Miss Chapin worked at The Golden Star Press, Atchison.
Born May 6, 1976, in St. Joseph, she lived her life in Rushville. She was a graduate of Rushville High School.
Miss Chapin was a member of the Christian faith.
She was preceded in death by a brother, Christopher.
Surviving: Roger Williams, of the home; two sons, Tyler Chapin and Ethan Williams, both of the home; her father, Rick Pyles, Vernon, Ala.; her mother, Lois Chapin, Rushville; her stepfather, Charles Bowen, Rushville; a brother, Rick, Rushville; and her maternal grandparents.
