Cecil W. Rhodes, 81, of Kansas City, Missouri, passed away Thursday, April 22, 2004, at the St. Luke's Hospital in Kansas City, Missouri.
Cecil was born November 2, 1922 in Brunswick, Missouri, the son of Albert H. and Ida Blanche Masters Rhodes.
He attended Hazel Ridge Country School, Brunswick High School , and graduated from Chillicothe Business College.
Cecil served in the United States Army during World War II from 1943 until 1945 where he fought in the Battle of the Bulge.
He married Juanita M. Fleming on March 7, 1957 in Harrisonville, Missouri; she preceded him in death on November 10, 1988.
He lived in Brunswick, Missouri until 1950 when he moved to Kansas City, Missouri where he was employed by the General Motors Assembly Plant from March of 1952 until his retirement in April of 1982.
Cecil loved his children and grandchildren and always remembered birthdays and special family events. He was a wonderful neighbor and friend and loved fishing and traveling and made many friends everywhere he went.
His great love was shooting and he was widely known and respected for his achievements in shooting and had won many awards and trophys. He was Sportsman of Year in 1999, 2000, and 2002.
Cecil was a Life Member of the Amateur Trapshooting Association and the Missouri Trapshooting Association.
He was a shooting instructor for Blue Springs High School and Cass County 4-H Team.
Cecil was accompanied everywhere he went by his faithful companion-his poodle- "Mandy".
The Blue Springs High School finished second in the nation under Cecil's instruction.
Survivors include one son, Vincent G. Rhodes, Pomona, California; two sisters, Mary Jane Curry, Carrollton, Missouri and Ida Blanche Kahler, Brunswick, Missouri; eight grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
Cecil was preceded in death by his parents, one sister, Audrey Fletcher, two sons, Cecil W. Rhodes, Jr. and Albert Richard Rhodes in infancy.
Funeral services were held at 1:30 p.m. on Monday, April 26, 2004, at the Gibson Funeral Home in Carrollton, Missouri, with the Reverend Bert Hughes officiating.
Burial and Military Graveside Services were held at the Carroll Memory Gardens in Carrollton, Missouri with the Rucker-McAlister American Legion Post of Brunswick, Missouri providing military honors.

Marie Emelia Mathis, 91, of Waverly, Missouri, passed away Saturday, April 24, 2004, at her home.
Marie was born March 31, 1913 on a farm in southern Gasconade County, Missouri, near Red Bird; the daughter of Charles and Caroline nee Drusch Scheel. She attended the Hyland country school near her home.
Mrs. Mathis lived in Gasconade County until 1935 when along with her husband and children she moved to Waverly, Missouri. She and her family became members of the Methodist Church there where she and Martin were Communion Stewards for many years.
Marie was christened at the Old Bland U.C.C. Church Parsonage north of Bland at the age of nine. On March 15, 1930 she and Martin Mathis were married by his father Paul Mathis, Justice of the Peace.
She was a cook in the Waverly Grade School where her children attended school and a nurse's aide in the old Kelling Clinic when it was downtown and she continued her employment with them when the new clinic was built. She worked there until her retirement.
She enjoyed fishing, quilting, and cooking and was known for her delicious coffee cakes which she donated for various church and charitable events in the community.
Mrs. Mathis was the last remaining member of her immediate family in South Missouri and was preceded in death by her thirteen siblings, Bill, Henry, Herman, John, Edward, Gus, Lewis, Otto, Ferd, Albert, Minnie Nowack, Lydia Essman, and Esther
Marie was also preceded in death by her husband, a daughter, Shirleen, and a granddaughter, Dana Mathis Nolte.
Survivors include two sons, Wesley Mathis and his wife Barbara, Owensville, Missouri, Carlee Mathis, O'Neill, Nebraska; and one daughter, Welma (Pat) Poese, O'Neill, Nebraska; ten grandchildren, Patricia Schaffer, Jana Kruger, Cynthia Morales, Nancy Sherwood, Scott Poese, Lisa Jamison, Brenda Schneider, Wesley Mathis, Jr., Michelle McNea, and Stephanie Vandermeulen; Twenty-eight great-grandchildren, Emily Smith, Cole, Jacob and Hayley Schaffer, Jill, David, and Adam Kruger, Anthony and Mary Morales, Ryan and Kristen Sherwood, Brandon and Michael Poese, Savana, Brook, and B J Jamison, Damon and Trenton Nolte, Aubree Thouvenel, Amber Franklin, Casey Russell, Louis Meierer, Joshua Mathis, Alexander, Molly, and Brett McNea, and Cooper and Hogan Vandermeulen; three great-great-grandchildren, Julie and Ryan Franklin and Brayden Smith; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, April 27, 2004, at the United Methodist Church in Waverly, Missouri with the Reverend Robert Payne officiating. Graveside services will follow at 2:30 p.m. at the Methodist Cemetery in Bland, Missouri.

George J. Giles, age 76, of Carrollton, Missouri, passed away Saturday, April 24, 2004 at Carroll County Memorial Hospital, Carrollton, Missouri.
He was born May 28, 1927 in Greenville, Iowa, the son of William J. and Iva M. Ramsey Giles. He attended Wakenda Schools. He was a Veteran of the United States Army, serving in World War II from 1943 to 1945.
On January 13, 1945, he married Martha Sedgwick in Carrollton, Missouri. She survives at the home.
George worked for Banner Biscuit Company for eighteen years and was the Chief Engineer for Interstate Brands for nineteen years, retiring in 1991. He was a member of the First Baptist Church, DeWitt, Missouri, where he served as a Deacon.
George is also survived by three children; Linda Chadwick and husband Julyan, Independence, Missouri, Joan Yuille and husband Alvin, Carrollton, Missouri, Gary Giles and wife Mary, Port St. Lucie, Florida; one brother, Austin Giles and wife Evaleen, Carrollton, Missouri; one sister-in-law, Betty Giles, Peoria, Illinois; nine grandchildren; nineteen great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
His parents; one sister, Helen Johnson; and two brothers, Clifford and Bill Giles, preceded him in death.
Graveside services will be at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, April 28, 2004 at Carroll Memory Gardens, Carrollton, Missouri with Reverend John Holt officiating.
Visitation will be Tuesday, April 27, 2004 from 7-8:30 p.m., at Gibson Funeral Home, Carrollton, Missouri.

Thomas A. Persinger, of Brunswick, Missouri, passed away Wednesday, April 28, 2004 at North Village Park, Moberly, Missouri.
He was born September 1, 1920 in Cedar Creek, Missouri, the son of John Franklin and Edith Anna Justis Persinger. He attended Bald Knob School in Cedar Creek, Missouri. He was a Veteran of the Army Air Corp during World War II. He was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars in Norfolk, Nebraska.
On October 22, 1946, he married Deloris Lorene Laughary in Mt. Home, Arkansas. She survives at the home. He was a carpenter and worked for Marshfield Homes in Chillicothe, Missouri.
He is also survived by three children; Steven Leon Persinger, Keytesville, Missouri, Wilma Jean Thompson, Norfolk, Nebraska and Thomas Allen Persinger, Norfolk, Nebraska; five brothers and sisters, Eunice Harrelson, Clinton, Missouri, Wayne Persinger, Carrollton, Missouri, Paul J. Persinger, Springfield, Missouri, William Dale Persinger, Greenfield, Missouri and Otis Lee Persinger, Republic, Missouri; thirteen grandchildren and several great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Silas Elbert and Ira Franklin Persinger, one sister, Celesta Belle Howard and one grandson, Timothy Persinger.
Funeral services will be at 1:00 p.m., Saturday, May 1, 2004 at Gibson Funeral Home, Carrollton, Missouri with Reverend Bert Hughes officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Zion Cemetery, Bogard, Missouri.
Visitation will be from 7-8:00 p.m., Friday, April 30, 2004 at the funeral home.

Delbert Virgil Patrick, Jr., age 77, of Lebanon, Missouri, passed away Thursday, April 29, 2004 at Carroll County Memorial Hospital, Carrollton, Missouri.
He was born March 18, 1927 in Independence, Missouri, the son of Delbert V. Sr., and Iva Westmoreland Patrick. He attended Independence, Missouri schools. He was a Veteran of the United States Army. Delbert had been a firefighter for the Independence, Missouri Fire Department for thirty-two years, retiring as a Captain in 1984.
Delbert is survived by two sisters; Mildred L. Patrick, Independence, Missouri, Bertha Flora Patrick, Buckner, Missouri; three brothers, James W. Patrick and wife Evelyn, Independence, Missouri, Harold M. Patrick and wife Barbara, Norborne, Missouri and Norman R. Patrick, Warrensburg, Missouri.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister, Elizabeth Ann Patrick and four brothers, Marion V., Elmer, Donald R., and Benjamin H. Patrick.
Memorial services will be at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, May 5, 2004 at Gibson Funeral Home, Carrollton, Missouri, with retired Chaplain Ray Love from the Firefighters Union Local #781 officiating.
Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m.until service time on Wednesday at the funeral home.

Jane N. Freeman, age 79, of Carrollton, Missouri, passed away Sunday, May 2, 2004, at the Carroll County Memorial Hospital, Carrollton, Missouri.
Jane was born September 29, 1924, in Carrollton, Missouri. She graduated from Carrollton High School in 1942, and then attended Stephens College where she received an Associate of Arts Degree. In 1951, she married Joe E. Freeman and they enjoyed 52 years together. Jane was a lifelong member of the First Baptist Church. She was very active in the family furniture business and enjoyed helping people with their interior design projects. She was also a 50 year member of the Carrollton Woman's Club.
Survivors include her husband, Joe E. Freeman; two sons, Richard Freeman and Lynn Freeman and his wife, Connie Freeman; two grandsons, Brian and Michael Freeman; one aunt, Irene Archibald; and three cousins, Tom Archibald, Sue Ray and Norma Napoleon.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Lynn A. Norris and Marie A. Norris.
A family visitation will be held on Wednesday, May 5, 2004, at the Gibson Funeral Home, Carrollton, Missouri, from 7-8:30 p.m.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Thursday, May 6, 2004, at the Gibson Funeral Home, Carrollton, Missouri. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery, Carrollton, Missouri.
One of Jane's favorite pastimes was to go to the ball field to watch her grandsons play baseball. The family asks that any memorials be directed to the Carroll County Little League Program or the First Baptist Church in her memory.
Virginia F. Phillips, age 92, of Carrollton, Missouri, passed away Tuesday, May 4, 2004 at Carrollton Nursing Center, Carrollton, Missouri.
She was born October 20, 1911, in Bogard, Missouri, the daughter of Thomas N. and Frances G. Kline Phillips. She attended Root School, St. Mary's Catholic School and graduated from Carrollton High School. She was a caregiver for her parents and brother, Tommy. She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, Carrollton, Missouri.
Virginia was preceded in death by her parents and three brothers, Joseph, Thomas and Robert Phillips.
Funeral services were at 10:00 a.m., Thursday, May 6, 2004 at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Carrollton, Missouri with Reverend Ken Criqui officiating. Burial was in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery, Carrollton, Missouri.
A visitation and reciting of the Rosary was held at 9:30 before the service.

Merlin H. Himes, 84, of Phoenix, Arizona, died Friday, May 7, 2004. He was born November 29, 1919 near Findlay, Illinois, the son of Louie and Mahalia Alice Himes. He graduated from Shelbyville High School in 1937 and also attended Sparks Business College. After serving in World War II, he moved to Kansas City, Missouri and was a supervisor of aircraft maintenance for TWA Airlines. Transferring to Phoenix, Arizona in 1955, he retired from TWA after thirty-eight years. His wife, Valeta, preceded him in death. Surviving are a daughter, Carolyn J. Himes of West Los Angeles, California; a son, Gary and wife Debra; two grandsons, David and Jonathan, all of Gilbert, Arizona; one brother, Rollie Himes, St. Elmo and numerous nieces and nephews in Shelbyville, Mattoon and St. Elmo.
Funeral services will be held at Gibson Funeral Home, Carrollton, Missouri on Saturday, May 15, 2004 at 11:00 a.m. Burial will be in Van Horn Cemetery, Bogard, Missouri.

James Ernest Weedin, age 76, of Carrollton, Missouri, passed away Tuesday, May 11, 2004 at the Carrollton Nursing Center, Carrollton, Missouri.
He was born February 13, 1928 in Waverly, Missouri, the son of Ernest and Dulcie Mae Louderback Weedin. He attended school in Waverly and graduated from Waverly High School. He was in the United States Army. He earned the rank of Sergeant, serving twenty months on Okinawa as a member of the 596th Engineer Field Maintenance Company. He received the Army Occupation Medal of Japan and the Korean War Medal as a Veteran in the State of Missouri.
On February 22, 1953, he married Dorothy Jane Macoubrie in Waverly, Missouri. She survives at the home. Jim had worked as a mechanic and as a parts manager for Griffin Construction Co., Allis-Chalmers, O'Dell Chevrolet, Jim Blevins Co., Swift Implement and Sears NAPA Auto Parts. He had also worked at Carrollton Nursing Center and the Carrollton Junior High. He was a member of the First Christian Church, Carrollton, Missouri and Waverly, Missouri.
In addition to his wife, Dorothy, Jim is also survived by three children; Carol Jane Beardslee and husband Leo, Raytown, Missouri, James Melvin Weedin and wife Judy, Platte City, Missouri and Barbara Jean Huelskamp, Liberty, Missouri; one brother, William Curtis Weedin and wife Elizabeth, Raytown, Missouri, one sister, Anna Mae Closterman and husband Raymond, Waverly, Missouri; seven grandchildren, Michael Leakey and wife Ashlee, Moberly, Missouri, Deborah Leakey and fiance' Chad Hill, Overland Park, Kansas, Daniel Leakey, Raytown, Missouri, Ryan, Jennifer and Kelsey Weedin, Platte City, Missouri; one step grandson, Michael Beardslee, Raytown, Missouri; and a host of nieces and nephews.
His parents preceded him in death.

Mable Ellen Curtis, age 73, of Carrollton, Missouri passed away, Thursday, May 13, 2004, at Carroll County Memorial Hospital, Carrollton, Missouri.
She was born November 11, 1930 in Fair Grove, Missouri, the daughter of Louis Edward and Sara Martha Forster Tindle. She attended Fair Grove Schools.
In 1946 she married Harley Grover Curtis in Willard, Missouri. He preceded her in death on November 4, 1974. Mable was a member of McCroskie Creek Baptist Church, Carrollton, Missouri. She had worked as a grocery retail sales clerk.
Mable is survived by three children; Martha E. Smith, Carrollton, Missouri, Barbara Sue Jones, Desert Center, California, Louis Edward Curtis, Webb City, Missouri; her companion, one sister, Joy L. Tindle, Springfield, Missouri; nine grandchildren; twenty-three great grandchildren; two great great granddaughters and several nieces and nephews.
Her parents and one great grandson also preceded her in death.
Memorial services will be at 1:00 p.m., Saturday, May 15, 2004 at the Abundant Fellowship Pentecostal Church, Third and Sloan Street, Carrollton, Missouri. Reverend Whitehead will officiate.
