Frank Byron Mays, 83, of Carrollton, Missouri, passed away Tuesday, June 15, 2004 at his home.
Frank was born March 10, 1921 in Norborne, Missouri, the son of Ben and Susie Byron Mays. He attended Douglas Grade School, Lincoln High School, Lincoln University, Jefferson City, Missouri; West Virginia State University in Tuskegee, Alabama, and Rockhurst University in Kansas City, Missouri. Frank was married to Laura McClair who preceded him in death; he later married Estelle Finnell, and is survived by his wife Lois Truitt Mays of the home.
Frank worked in the construction industry and later for Banquet Foods in Carrollton, Missouri. He was a member of the St. Luke's A.M.E. Church in Norborne, Missouri.
Survivors include his wife, Lois, of the home; five sons, Melvin Mays, Jacksonville, Florida, Glen Mays, Clinton, Missouri, Darryl Finnell, Carrollton, Missouri, David Finnell, Blue Springs, Missouri, Byron Mays, Lawrence, Kansas; two step daughters, Merca Johnson, Marshall, Missouri, and Sirrena Truitt, Kansas City, Missouri; one sister, Frances Evans, Kansas City, Missouri; twelve grandchildren; and three great grandchildren.
One brother, Bill Mays and two sisters, Myrtle Matthews and Joyce Clayton, preceded him in death. Funeral services will be conducted at 1:30 p.m., Saturday, June 19, 2004 at the First Baptist Church, Norborne, Missouri. The family will receive friends from 7:00 until 8:30 p.m. on Friday evening at the Gibson Funeral Home in Carrollton, Missouri.
Burial and Military Graveside Services by the Veterans of Foreign Wars Pence-Lovell-England Post #1773 will be in the Oak Hill Cemetery, Carrollton, Missouri.
The family suggests contributions to family choice in memory of Mr. Mays. They may be left at or mailed to Gibson Funeral Home, 201 S. Main, Carrollton MO 64633.
Grace D. Vantrump, age 103, of Carrollton, Missouri, passed away Wednesday, June 16, 2004 at 10:15 a.m., the Carroll County Memorial Hospital Extended Care, Carrollton, Missouri.
Grace was born June 15, 1901, in Norborne, Missouri, the daughter of Clinton Brock and Anna Mae Renzelman Brock. She lived with her parents on a farm north of Norborne. On January 11, 1921, she married Roy Leslie Vantrump at Wakenda, Missouri. Her husband preceded her in death on August 20, 1968.
Grace was a homemaker. She was a faithful member for many years of the Winfrey Extension Club. She was a member of the Church of Christ.
Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, J. C. and Virginia Vantrump, Carrollton, Missouri; and one grandson, Michael Allen Vantrump, Scottsdale, Arizona. She is also survived by nieces, nephews and a cousin, Helen Hogan.
She was preceded in death by her parents, one brother, Chester Brock and one sister, Ethel Smith.
Family visitation will be from 9:30-10:45 a.m. at the Gibson Funeral Home, Carrollton, Missouri, prior to the service.
Graveside services will be at Oak Hill Cemetery, Carrollton, Missouri at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, June 19, 2004 with Reverend Bert Hughes officiating.
The family suggests any memorials be made to the Alzheimer's Association or to the Carroll County Senior Center. They may be left at or mailed to Gibson Funeral Home, 201 S. Main, Carrollton MO 64633.
Gussie "Gus" Weber Hurlburt, 94, of Marshall, Missouri, formerly of Lee's Summit, Missouri, died Thursday June 17, 2004 at Fitzgibbon Hospital in Marshall.
He was born June 15, 1910, in Waverly, Missouri, the son of James Eli Hurlburt and Eliza Jane "Fannie" Parker Hurlburt.
On April 26, 1975, he married Helen Virginia Nichols in Boonville, Missouri. Gus never had any biological children, but he had a great "extended" family that loved him dearly.
Gus graduated from Waverly High School in 1930. He held a variety of occupations from 1930 to 1977. He began and ended his working years with the Corp of Engineers as a deckhand and boat operator on the Missouri river. In between he worked at a variety of jobs that used his diversified skills in maintenance. He also owned and operated two businesses, Sunset Service Station, in Savannah, Missouri and H & H Vending Company in Carrollton, Missouri. He was a member of the Moose Lodge and the Methodist Church. His hobbies were hunting, fishing, yard work, and being a great handyman.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by a brother, Harry B. Hurlburt of Kansas City and several nieces. He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Walter F. Hurlburt and Eldon S. Hurlburt.
The world will miss this great neighbor and generous man.
Harry Eldon Miller, age 83, of Bosworth, Missouri, died unexpectedly at his home on Wednesday, June 23, 2004. Mr. Miller was born on October 27, 1920, in Carroll County and was the son of Lilly (Troutman) and Claude Miller. He married the former Wilma Lucille Stark on September 14, 1947, at the home of Brother Baker. Mr. Miller attended the Bingham rural school and was actively engaged in farming his entire life. He also worked at the J. C. Samples Cold Storage Locker. Harry served his country in the United States Army during World War II. Survivors include his wife, of the home, one son, Larry A. Miller, and wife, Cherry, of Bogard, Missouri, and one daughter, Verna Murphy and husband, Dennis, of Bosworth. He is also survived by two grandsons, Michael Murphy and wife, Alicia, of Bogard, and Scott Murphy and wife, Jessica, of Bosworth, Missouri. Also surviving is one brother, Marvin, of Carrollton, Missouri. Mr. Miller was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers: Klank, Orville, and Carl; and one sister, Mildred Kruse. Harry loved nature, working with his livestock, and whistling while he worked. He also took great pride, and had extreme joy, in his two grandsons. Funeral services were held on Saturday, June 26, 2004, at the Gibson Funeral Home in Carrollton and were officiated by the Reverend Joe Barone. Burial was in the Van Horn Cemetery, Bogard, Missouri. Lawrence V. Lake, 80, of Carrollton, Missouri, passed away Saturday, June 26, 2004, at the Carroll County Memorial Hospital.
Lawrence was born May 13, 1924 in Eldon, Missouri; the son of Thomas E. and Pearl Mae Vernon. He received his education in Bosworth, Missouri and followed the occupation of farming and farm related industries.
On July 3, 1943 he was married to Margaret A. Crawford in DeWitt, Missouri; she preceded him in death on April 18, 2001.
He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Carrollton, Missouri and he had served as a Deacon in various churches since 1964.
Survivors include five children: Gerald V. Lake, Hampton, Tennessee, Kenneth E. Lake, Sedalia, Missouri, Janet A. Lake, Lincoln, Nebraska, Brenda S. Buery, Shawnee, Kansas, and L. Darrin Lake, Carrollton, Missouri; two sisters, Dorothy L. Watskey, Carrollton, Missouri and Faye Morrison, Jefferson City, Missouri; numerous grandchildren,; and great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
He was preceded in death by six brothers, Leslie Lake, Clarence (Curly) Lake, Clyde Lake, Edgar Lake, Glen Lake, and Leonard (Bill) Lake and six sisters, Martha Tompkins, Lillian McDowell, Ella Lake, Ruby Riecke, D. Josephine Lake, and Maude Joffee.
Funeral services were held on June 28, 2004 at 1:30 p.m., at the First Baptist Church in Carrollton, Missouri with Pastor Jeff Maxwell officiating.
Visitation was held prior to the service.
Burial was in the Van Horn Cemetery, Bogard, Missouri.

William "Bill" Ellis Givens, Sr., age 84, of Carrollton, Missouri, passed away Tuesday, June 29, 2004 at the Carrollton Nursing Center, Carrollton, Missouri.
He was born March 5, 1920, the son of Shird and Maude Mae Clanton Givens in Salisbury, Missouri. He attended Salisbury country schools. Bill was a member of the Southside Baptist Church, Carrollton, Missouri. He had worked as a truck driver and had worked for the Moberly Street Department in Moberly, Missouri for eighteen years.
Bill is survived by six children; George Givens, Salisbury, Missouri, Donald Givens and wife Ruby, Salisbury, Missouri, William Givens, Jr., and wife Jeanette, Huntsville, Missouri, Willa Burris and husband Charles, Salisbury, Missouri, Dorothy Munoz, State of Colorado, Sabina Givens, Fort Morgan, Colorado; one brother, Norman Givens, Anderson, Indiana; one sister, Clara Dickie and husband Homer, Mt. Sterling, Illinois; several grandchildren and one great grandchild. Bill is also survived by his longtime companion, Hazel Shatto and her family, Carol Jean Shatto; and Jim and Cindy Shatto and daughters.
His parents; two brothers, Edward and Leroy Givens; one sister, Betty Thompson; and one granddaughter, Pamela Dawn Givens, preceded Bill in death.
Graveside services will be at 10:00 a.m., Thursday, July 1, 2004 at Oak Hill Cemetery, Carrollton, Missouri with Reverend Lee Borders officiating.
Visitation will be at 9:00 a.m. on Thursday before the service at Gibson Funeral Home, Carrollton, Missouri.

Louisa Thompson was born on September 28, 1909 to the late James R. and Ethel H. Thompson Alexander. She attended the Douglas Elementary School where she was an outstanding student. She joined the St. Luke AME Church at an early age and was a very active member. She served the church as Class Leader, Sunday School Superintendent and Teacher, choir member, and a member of the Willing Workers Club. Louisa was a delegate to many District and Annual conferences. She was a faithful member until her health failed and she became a resident of the Carrollton Nursing Center in Carrollton, Missouri. She was married to the late Ivory L. Thompson on February 3, 1937. They were the parents of three son, Wyvonne (known as Vonnie), Jack and Ivan and a daughter, Dorothy. Louisa loved to travel. She took her first trip by plane to Orlando, Florida at the age of 74 and at the age of 81 took a Caribbean Cruise. She loved people and loved to talk. She never met a stranger. Louisa departed this live on July 1, 2004 at the Carrollton Nursing Center. She was preceded in death by her parents, James and Ethel Alexander; husband, Ivory Thompson; sons, Wyvonne, Jack; son-in-law, Reverend Eugene Craig; brothers and sister. She leaves to cherish her memory daughter, Dorothy Craig, Norborne, Missouri; son, Ivan Thompson (Judi), Carrollton, Missouri; five grandchildren, Val and Marko of Visalia, California, Michele, Tony, and Kristen of Norborne, Missouri; brother, James Alexander (Ruth); daughter-in-law, Doroth Thompson, sisters-in-law, Helen Alexander and Mary Lou McCoy; a special niece, Ethel (William) Blair; many other nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. Funeral services were held at 1:30 p.m., Wednesday, July 7, 2004 at St. Lukes AME Church, Norborne, Missouri with Reverend Margaretta Narcisse officiating. Burial was in Stemple Cemetery, Norborne, Missouri. Visitation was from 7-8:30 p.m., Tuesday, July 6, 2004 at Gibson Funeral Home, Norborne, Missouri. Larry Leroy Austin, age 55, of Carrollton, Missouri, passed away Thursday, July 8, 2004 at Carroll County Memorial Hospital, Carrollton, Missouri.
He was born April 12, 1949 in Carrollton, Missouri, the son of Charles Edgar and Betty Hartwig Austin. He attended Carrollton schools. He was a Veteran of the United States Army serving in Vietnam and was awarded the Bronze Star Medal with "V" Device, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal with 60 device, 1 o/S Bar, Purple Heart and Marksman Badge with Rifle Bar (M-14). Larry was a member of the Wakenda Baptist Church, Wakenda, Missouri and a self-employed laborer.
Larry is survived by his mother, Betty Austin, Carrollton, Missouri; one son, Mark Austin and wife Tina, Waverly, Missouri; two daughters, Michelle Austin, Carrollton, Missouri, Angie Harris, Blue Springs, Missouri; three brothers and three sisters, Carol Schaffer and husband Bill, Carrollton, Missouri, Sherry Mathis and husband Brook, Carrollton, Missouri, Debbie Jones, Columbia, Missouri, Gary Austin and fiance' Brenda Cartee, Carrollton, Missouri, Ronnie Austin and wife Sue, Doniphan, Missouri, Don Austin and wife Marilyn, Houston, Texas; and four grandchildren.
His father, one brother, Charles William Austin and one sister, Sandra Kay Austin, preceded Larry in death.
Military Graveside services were held on Saturday, July 10, 2004 at 11:00 a.m. at Oak Hill Cemetery, Carrollton, Missouri, with Reverend Mike Walker officiating. Veterans of Foreign Wars Pence-Lovell-England Post #1773, Carrollton, Missouri, provided military services.
Visitation was from 9:30 - 10:45 a.m. prior to the service at Gibson Funeral Home, Carrollton, Missouri.

Mary Katheryn Jackson, age 66, of Boonville, Missouri, passed away Saturday, July 10, 2004, at University Hospital, Columbia, Missouri. She was born November 16, 1937 the daughter of Rena Chapman in Brunswick, Missouri. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Brunswick. She had been a cook at the Marshall Rehabilitation Center in Marshall, Missouri, retiring in 1992. Survivors include one son, Ricky Maddix, Fulton, Missouri; two daughters, Carlette Phillips, Boonville, Missouri, Vicky Maddix, Slater, Missouri; six grandchildren, seven great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her mother, two brothers, and one grandson. Graveside services will be at 1:00 p.m., Thursday, July 15, 2004 at Brunswick City Cemetery, Brunswick, Missouri with Reverend Robert Poindexter officiating. There will be a private family viewing on Wednesday before the service. The family suggests contributions be made to Gibson Funeral Home and they may be left at or mailed to 207 W. Mabel Grace Steinbeck, age 92, a former Mendon, Missouri resident, passed away on Wednesday, July 14, 2004 at the Pioneer Health Center in Marceline, Missouri. She was born on April 5, 1912 in Farlandville, Kansas, the daughter of Frank and Flora A. Grimm Zimmerman. She married Frank Steinbeck on March 28, 1938. Frank preceded her in death in 1993. Mabel had been a homemaker and a housewife. She was a member of the the Mendon Methodist Church and an Honorary member of the Beta Sigma Phi Sorority at Mendon, Missouri. She is survived by four sisters-in-law, Erma McAllister, Mendon, Missouri, Vivian Thornsberry, Sumner, Missouri, Ruth Garr, Mendon, Missouri and Verna Duvall, Oak Grove, Missouri; two brothers-in-law; John Steinbeck, Yucca Valley, California and Joe Steinbeck, Lewistown, Missouri; and several nieces and nephews. Mabel was also preceded in death by her parents, two daughters, Mary Hannah and Edna Jo Steinbeck and one son, Frank Steinbeck, Jr. Graveside services will be held at the Mendon Cemtery at Mendon, Missouri on Friday, July 16, 2004 at 11:00 a.m., with Gail Brown officiating. Memorials may be made to the charity of one's choice. Funeral arrangements were by Gibson Funeral Home, Mendon, Missouri.
