NORMAN GILBERT
Norman Gilbert, 69, was born Feb. 25, 1935, in Birdsong, to Autna and Perry Gilbert and passed away on Sept. 7, 2004, in his home in Ridgecrest, CA.
He lived in Tulsa, OK, prior to moving to Ridgecrest, CA in 1974. He was a machinist at the Naval Weapons Center, China Lake, until his retirement.
He loved to travel, especially to Oklahoma; daughters - Krista Hays - Indiana, Cathy Tristan - California; step-daughter, Vickie Thatcher - Michigan; two sisters, Vernice Cain and Irene Bryan - El Dorado Springs; nine grandchildren; and one great-grandson.
A graveside service was held on Sept. 11, at Desert Memorial Park with Dr. Ray Teston of First Baptist Church officiating.
WALTER BERYL HUDSON
Walter Beryl Hudson Jr., 82, was born on March 11, 1922, in Springfield, the son of Walter B. Hudson Sr. and Ruth Lindquist Hudson and passed away on Sept. 13, 2004, in the Cedar County Memorial Hospital.
He graduated from Central High School and the University of California until his retirement to El Dorado Springs.
He was a member of the First Congregational Church in Springfield.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and two brothers, Clarence Hudson and Wayne Hudson.
Survivors include one brother, Charles N. Hudson, and wife-Wanda - Stockton; three nephews; five nieces; and his faithful dog, "Shep."
Arrangements were under the direction of Hackleman and Sons Funeral Home. No services are planned.
HAZEL E. BURROW HURD
Hazel Elizabeth Burrow Hurd, 91, was born Nov. 26, 1912, to Margaret Lloyd Reynolds and Clarence E. (Dutch) Reynolds near Vista and passed away Sept. 13, 2004, at Northwood Hills Nursing Center, Humansville.
Hazel was the eldest of nine children - Albert Reynolds, Bobby Reynolds, Vernon Reynolds, Gladys Burrow, Eva Wheeler, Velma Dade and one child dying at birth, all preceded her in death.
She was united in marriage to Hazen Drake. To this union a daughter was born.
Hazel worked in Kansas City as a maid and chauffeur for several years. She worked at Sears and Roebuck for 11 1/2 years and Bendix for 17 1/2 years until she retired in 1973.
She joined the Ladies Auxiliary to the VFW 4197 in 1979.
Survivors included her daughter, Dorothy Ball, and her husband-A.D. - Springfield; her grandchildren - Mike Ball and his wife-Sharon, Steve Ball and his wife-Debbie and Joetta Culbertson and her husband-Gene; five great-grandchildren - Jason Ball, Kristy Ball, Jennifer Thomas and her husband-Davey, Damon Culbertson and his wife-Ginger, and Shannon Culbertson and his wife-Brandi; six great-great-grandchildren; seven step-great-great-grandchildren; a sister, Naomi Janes (Lane) - El Dorado Springs; brothers-in-law, Chester (Check) Dade and Lloyd Janes - both of El Dorado Springs; a host of nieces and nephews and other relatives and friends.
Services were on Saturday, Sept. 18, with Greg Mangum officiating in the Sheldon-Goodrich Chapel, Osceola. Music was "Don't Cry for Me" and "Why Me, Lord."
Pallbearers were Jason Ball, Shannon Culbertson, Damon Culbertson, Davey Thomas, Dennis Orroll and Gene Culbertson. Honorary pallbearers were Mike Ball and Steve Ball.
Burial was in the Macedonia Cemetery near Vista under the direction of the Sheldon-Goodrich Funeral Home, Osceola.
LESTER EDMOND STARKEY
Lester Edmond Starkey, 88, was born Oct. 24, 1915, in Harwood, the son of William Ralph and Iola Pearl (Davis) Starkey and passed from this life in the early morning of Saturday, Sept. 18, 2004, in the Sac Osage Hospital,Osceola.
Edmond attended the Roberts School then farmed for the rest of his life.
On Sept. 19, 1937, Edmond was united in marriage to Doretta LaVerene Hawkins by Bro. Kenneth Nichols in the home of Ruby Wallen.
He was a longtime member of the Schell City Christian Church where he also served as an elder for more than 20 years.
Edmond always enjoyed the farm and watching his cattle, horses and mules. For years, he had a Carter and Doug Starkey. Interment was in the Green Lawn Cemetery, Schell City, under the direction of the Lewis-Hoagland Funeral home.
Memorial contributions are suggested to the Schell City Christian Church youth group in care of the Lewis-Hoagland Funeral Home in Schell City.
RON (R. W.) WADLEIGH
Ron (R. W.) Wadleigh, 62, Dighton, KS, was born Aug. 3, 1942, in Winfield, KS, to Robert Chase and Sue Margaret (Holman) Wadleigh and passed away Saturday, Sept. 11, 2004, in Lane County, KS.
He was raised in Cambridge, KS, and graduated from high school there in 1960. He served in the United States Army from 1964 to 1966 stationed in Germany.
After his discharge, he attended the University of Tulsa for two years taking business classes. He then went to work for Sun Oil Company in Tulsa.
But Ron's heart belonged to ranching and horses. He soon found himself doing ranch work in southeast Kansas and northeast TX, and Rhonda (Susie) Wadleigh - Sedan, KS; one brother, Fred Wadleigh - Alabama; two sisters, Barbara Lohrding - Great Bend, KS and Carol Kern - Jenks, OK; and three grandchildren.
Services were held Wednesday, Sept. 15, at Boomhower Funeral Home with Rev. David Randall officiating. Burial was in Tighten Memorial Cemetery.

James L. McKinley
James Lloyd McKinley, 103, was born July 25, 1901, in St. Clair County, to James and Icie (Suggs) McKinley and passed away Thursday, Sept. 30, 2004, at Community Springs Healthcare Facility, El Dorado Springs.
Mac, as he was called by friends, grew to manhood on the old McKinley farm west of Monegaw Springs.
On March 4, 1936, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and was discharged Sept. 30, 1960. During his military tenure he was stationed in France, Germany, Austria, Italy and Africa. At the conclusion of his military career he retired to Tiffin and El Dorado Springs, where he remained until his health failed. He was moved to the Appleton City Nursing Home, then to Rest Haven, El Dorado Springs and later to Community Springs Healthcare Facility, El Dorado Springs, where he remained until his death.
Mac was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Thomas; and five sisters - Ethel Whitley, Pernia Heath, Roxie Keeton, Marie Weant and Flora Nelson.
Survivors include his sister, Winnie Mistler - Sacramento,CA; eight nieces and two nephews and their families.
Services were held Sunday, Oct. 3, in the Sheldon-Goodrich Chapel, Osceola with Rev. Gene Gray officiating. Musical sections were "The Battle Hymn of the Republic" and "Onward Christian Soldiers."
Military services were provided by the Military Honors Team, Ft. Leonard Wood. Interment was in the Pleasant Springs Cemetery under the direction of the Sheldon-Goodrich Funeral Home, Osceola.
Pallbearers were James Brackenridge, Jerry Brackenridge, Robert D. Moore, Gerald D. Moore, James W. Heath and Larry Applegate.
