DONALD EUGENE MASTEN
Donald Eugene Masten, 64, was born Jan. 29, 1939, near Rockville to David Ernest and Edith Lavon (Reese) Masten and passed away June 6, 2003, in St. Luke's Hospital, Kansas City.
Don grew up in the Monegaw Springs area and graduated from Osceola High School. He was in the U.S. Navy for four years. Afterwards he worked as an electrician for several years. His jobs included City of Lawrence, KS, electrical inspector. He owned an electrical and appliance business in Waverly, KS, for several years.
He joined the Kansas National Guard in 1976. In 1979, he became a recruiter for the Kansas National Guard and retired from that position. He moved back to the Osceola community to be near his family in the area where he grew up. It was here that he started to do full time work for the Lord. The Osage Country Gospel Band was formed and his lifelong passion was realized.
Don was a member of the Vista Baptist Church. He was married to Betty Joan Schierick and to this union one son, Gary Eugene, was born. Joan passed away in 1964. On Feb. 27, 1965, Don married Georgia Broyles in Waverly, KS. They were divorced in 1993. They had three children - Darren Leon, Teresa Dawn and Donita Jayne.
Don was preceded in death by his dad in 1973, his mother in 1975 and his sister in 2000.
He is survived by two sons, Gary and his wife, Lilly - Wichita Falls, TX, and Darren and his wife, Kristin - Bucyrus, KS; two daughters, Teresa Chapin and her husband, Jerry - Lawrence, KS, and Donita Gottstein and her husband, Patrick - Perry, KS; his precious eight grandchildren - Tampus Masten, Mitchel Masten, Lacy Masten, Katlynn Masten, Emily Gottstein, Joshua Masten, Harrison Chapin and Andie Jayne Masten; his wife, Barbara; two brothers, Dale Masten and Doris Murphy - Osceola, and Sam Masten and his wife, Julia - Lowry City; two sisters, Joyce Watts and her husband, Jesse - El Dorado Springs, and Sue Powell and her husband, Roger - Osceola; brother-in-law, Elza Ridgway - El Dorado Springs; aunts; uncles; nieces; nephews; and a host of friends.
He touched many lives throughout his life. He will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved him.
Services were held Monday, June 9, in the Sheldon-Goodrich Chapel with Rev. Durward Scott officiating. Music was provided by Jessie Evans. Casketbearers were David Powell, Justin Masten, Matthew Watts, Randy Ridgway, Mike Masten and Andy Graves. Honorary casketbearers were Dale Masten, Roger Powell, Jesse Watts, Elza Ridgway, Sam Masten, Darren Masten, Gary Masten, nephews and cousins. Interment was in Benton Green Cemetery under direction of Sheldon-Goodrich Funeral Home, Osceola.

JEAN EARL PULLEY
Jean Earl Pulley, 62, was born Oct. 18, 1940, in Zenith, to Luther and Lucille Bachelor Pulley and passed away June 5, 2003, at his home near El Dorado Springs.
Jean was united in marriage to Barbara A. Fox on Jan. 15, 1959, in Fresno, CA. Much of their married life was in the California area. They moved to El Dorado Springs area in 1994, where he started the Pulley Upholstery Co., which continues today.
Jean was an especially loving father, grandfather and husband. He made many sacrifices for his family over the years. His loving attitude will always be remembered.
Jean was preceded in death by two brothers, Bill and Paul Pulley.
He is survived by his wife, Barbara, of the home; four sons - Larry - El Dorado Springs, Michael - Coweta, OK, Leonard - El Dorado Springs, and Mark - Selma, CA; three brothers - Charles Pulley - Oregon, Jim Pulley - Oroville, CA, and Carl Pulley - Oregon; one sister, Virginia Emerson - Kingsburg, CA; eight grandchildren - Shawnda Reagan, Amanda Pulley, Jacob Pulley, Scott Pulley, Marcus Pulley, Melissa Pulley, A.J. Pulley and Matthew Pulley; three great-grandchildren - Mackaylee Reagan, Austin Reagan and Eric Reagan; nieces; nephew; other relatives and many friends.
Services were Sunday, June 8, at Pleasant Grove Cemetery with Rev. Brent Bland officiating. Interment was in Pleasant Grove Cemetery, Taberville, under direction of Sheldon Funeral Home, El Dorado Springs.

GERALL G. SPENCER
Gerall G. Spencer, 47, El Dorado Springs, passed away on Tuesday, June 3, 2003, in the Cedar County Memorial Hospital. He was born on Jan. 20, 1956, in Nevada, the son of James Albert and Irene Myrtle Shaw Spencer.
Gerall graduated from La Sierra High School in Riverside, CA, in 1974. He later completed three years of college at Missouri Southern State College in Joplin. He served in the National Guard from 1988 to 1992.
Gerall was baptized into the Church of Christ in 1985.
Gerall was a truck driver for many years. He returned to El Dorado Springs six months ago, completed his training and graduated from the Missouri Welding Institute in Nevada.
He is survived by his parents, Jim and Myrtle Spencer - El Dorado Springs; and aunts, uncles and cousins.
Services were held Friday, June 6, in the Hackleman Chapel with David Studer officiating. Musical selections were provided by the Church of Christ singers. Interment was in the El Dorado Springs Cemetery under the direction of the Hackleman and Sons Funeral Home. Pallbearers were Greg Allison, Joe Barger, Bruce Walker, Walt Anderson, Andy Gonzalez and Don Dean.

MARTHA ANN SHAVER SPICER
Martha Ann Shaver Spicer, 62, passed away Monday, June 2, 2003. Marty was the wife of the late Charles (Chuck) Spicer.
Marty and her husband traveled extensively during their time together. They lived in Germany while Chuck was stationed there with the U.S. Army before settling down in the Midwest. They had lived in Nevada, Harrisonville and various locations in the Kansas City area.
Both Charles and Marty were retired from the Department of Defense. Marty loved to sew and create variations of existing patterns.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles, her parents and her in-laws, Glen and Neoma Spicer.
She is survived by her brother and sister-in-law, Kent and Ann Shaver; sister-in-law, Betty Friar; brothers-in-law and their wives, Don and Polly Bybee and Paul and Kay Bybee; and a host of loving nieces and nephews. Marty will be missed by her family.
Cremation was under direction of Hackleman and Sons Funeral Home.

CHARLIE NEVA CROSS
Charlie Neva Cross, 90, Butler, passed away Wednesday, July 23, 2003, in Bates County Memorial Hospital, Butler. She was born February 13, 1913, to Joe A. and Gertie F. Pinkman Budd in Cedar County.
Charlie, one of three children, was raised in El Dorado Springs. She attended the Pleasant Ridge Grade School just southeast of town. On Feb. 23, 1935, she was united in marriage to Emmett Cross. To this union four children were born. Charlie was a homemaker most of her life, dedicating her life to her family and home. In 1946 she and her husband moved to Ballard and later moved to the farm on East Hwy. 52. In 1979 they moved to town in Butler. She attended the Cove Creek Christian Church, the Pleasant Gap Christian Church and the Ft. Scott Church of Christ in Butler.
Charlie was a strong but sweet Christian lady. She could be described as outgoing and independent. Her hobbies included sewing, quilting, gardening and canning. She was a wonderful caregiver to her husband, Emmett, during his illness. Charlie also enjoyed playing in the “Kitchen Band” at the local nursing homes. Her grandchildren and great-grandchildren were an important part of her life and she was very proud of them.
Charlie was preceded in death by her husband, Emmett Cross; infant son, Charles Cross; daughter, Judy Easterling; brother, Granvil Budd; and sister, Pauline Houle.
She is survived by two daughters, Mary Joe Speck, and her husband, Frank - Raymore, and Janice Tatro and her husband, Aubrey - Lake Lotawana; son-in-law, Robert “Rob” Easterling - Albuquerque, NM; sister-in-law, Ardis Budd - El Dorado Springs; five grandchildren -
Debbie Howard, Daphne Tucker, Kevin McCubbins, Mike Easterling and Jeff Easterling; six great-grandchildren; and nephews and nieces.
Services were held Saturday, July 26, in Schowengerdt Funeral Chapel, Butler with Bill Herndon officiating. Musical selections were “Amazing Grace” and “In The Garden.” Casketbearers were Kevin McCubbins, Mike Easterling, Jeff Easterling, Jim Howard, Gene Brown and Bobby Budd. Interment was in Oak Hill Cemetery, Butler under direction of Schowengerdt Funeral Chapel.

JAMES ELDON “JIM” ELWELL
James Eldon “Jim” Elwell, 70, Wichita, formerly of Augusta, KS, retired avionics design engineer for Raytheon and Cessna Aircraft companies, passed away Sunday, July 20, 2003.
Services were held Saturday, July 26, at Lakeview Funeral Home Chapel in Wichita, KS.
Jim served as past master of the Mystic Tie Lodge. He was a heart transplant survivor for 13 1/2 years. The family would like to acknowledge the John Steckstor family for their gift of life through organ donation.
Survivors include his wife, Iva Jean - Wichita, KS; daughters and sons-in-law, Drs. Janet and Kyle Fanning - Oklahoma City, OK, formerly of Augusta, KS, Joyce and Jim Green - Brandon, MS, and Judy and Terry Williams - Wichita, KS; sister and brother-in-law, Ellen and Keron Shank - Wichita, KS; granddaughter, Jessica Green - Brandon, MS.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John Elwell and Peggy Plagge; and brother, John Elwell.
A memorial has been established with Midwest Transplant Network, 1035 N. Emporia, Wichita, KS 67214.
Services were under the direction of Lakeview Funeral Home, Wichita, KS.

MARY L. KNIGHT
Mary L. Knight, 91, El Dorado Springs, passed away on Sunday morning, Aug. 3, 2003, in the Cedar County Memorial Hospital. She was born on Sept. 30, 1911, the daughter of Tandy Lee and Zula Richards White.
On Nov. 27, 1930, she married Robert L. Knight. She was a member of the Montevallo Baptist Church, where she remained active until her health failed.
Mary was a homemaker and an excellent seamstress who loved to sew for her family. She enjoyed her great-grandchildren and always had her camera ready for another picture of them.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert, in 1985; her parents; two brothers; two sisters; an infant son; and a great-grandson.
She is survived by her sister, Thelma Heaton - Raytown; her daughters, Phyllis Ewan, and her husband, Gene - Raytown, and Roberta Mark and her husband, Gene - Sheldon; her son, Leslie Knight, and his wife, Carolyn - El Dorado Springs; eight grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
Services were held on Tuesday afternoon, Aug. 5, in the Hackleman Chapel with Pastor William Bell officiating. Musical selections were provided by Ruth Brown. Interment was in the Oak Hill Cemetery, Butler, under direction of the Hackleman and Sons Funeral Home. Pallbearers were James Ewan, Mike Mark, Tim Mark, Mitchell Knight, Greg Knight and Mark Koca.
