WILLIAM R. DRAKE
William R. Drake, 64, was born Dec. 13, 1939, in Osceola, the son of Clarence William Drake and Connie Martha Leach and departed this life on July 17, 2004. He fought a valiant fight against cancer.
Bill was an avid stock car fan and at one time owned and drove one. He was also a hunter, fisherman and music fan of Mel McDaniel, knowing him personally.
Bill was preceded in death by his mother and father.
He is survived by his sisters - Martha Jones - El Dorado Springs, Judy Cline - Tonasket, WA, and Linda Dykes - Erick, OK; his brother, John M. Drake - Potosi; very dear and faithful friends, Leroy and Wanda Langley and Sherri and Bill Gibson; many nieces, nephews and cousins; and many friends.
Cremation. Gravesides will begin at 5 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 14, at his parents grave in the Osceola Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers the family request donations be made to the American Cancer Fund.
ROBERT J. SCHMIDT
Robert J. Schmidt, 68, El Dorado Springs, was born May 23, 1936, in Independence, the son of William John and Frances Christine Schmidt and passed away Saturday, Aug. 7, 2004, after a long illness.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Bill Schmidt.
Survivors include his daughter, Vicki Tipper - El Dorado Springs; his five brothers - Jim and Bud - both of California, Jerry - Washington, Roger - Independence, and Donald - Blue Springs; one sister, Mary - Washington; his three grandchildren - Mike Tipper, Matt Tipper and Brandi Tipper - all of El Dorado Springs; other family and friends.
Funeral Mass began at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 11, in St. Elizabeth Catholic Church with Father Bill Krudwig officiating under direction of Hackleman and Sons Funeral Home, El Dorado Springs.
James L. McKinley
James Lloyd McKinley, 103, was born July 25, 1901, in St. Clair County, to James and Icie (Suggs) McKinley and passed away Thursday, Sept. 30, 2004, at Community Springs Healthcare Facility, El Dorado Springs.
Mac, as he was called by friends, grew to manhood on the old McKinley farm west of Monegaw Springs.
On March 4, 1936, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and was discharged Sept. 30, 1960. During his military tenure he was stationed in France, Germany, Austria, Italy and Africa. At the conclusion of his military career he retired to Tiffin and El Dorado Springs, where he remained until his health failed. He was moved to the Appleton City Nursing Home, then to Rest Haven, El Dorado Springs and later to Community Springs Healthcare Facility, El Dorado Springs, where he remained until his death.
Mac was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Thomas; and five sisters - Ethel Whitley, Pernia Heath, Roxie Keeton, Marie Weant and Flora Nelson.
Survivors include his sister, Winnie Mistler - Sacramento,CA; eight nieces and two nephews and their families.
Services were held Sunday, Oct. 3, in the Sheldon-Goodrich Chapel, Osceola with Rev. Gene Gray officiating. Musical sections were "The Battle Hymn of the Republic" and "Onward Christian Soldiers."
Military services were provided by the Military Honors Team, Ft. Leonard Wood. Interment was in the Pleasant Springs Cemetery under the direction of the Sheldon-Goodrich Funeral Home, Osceola.
Pallbearers were James Brackenridge, Jerry Brackenridge, Robert D. Moore, Gerald D. Moore, James W. Heath and Larry Applegate.
Helen Jane Haynes Morlan
Helen Jane Haynes Morlan, 86, Stockton, was born on Nov. 6, 1917, in Cedar County the third daughter of Everett and Eliza Shaw Haynes and passed away on Saturday, Oct. 2, 2004, in the Cedar County Memorial Hospital, El Dorado Springs.
On April 6, 1940, she was united in marriage to Albert Herman Morlan in El Dorado Springs. To this union was born one son and four daughters.
Helen was a devoted wife and homemaker. She especially enjoyed quilting and preparing food for each family member. Visits from her grandchildren and great-grandchildren were highlights of her life.
She was a member of the Church of God (Holiness), Stockton serving as treasurer for many years.
After retirement, they moved from Stockton to El Dorado Springs. In 2000, they moved to the Stockton Nursing Home.
Helen was preceded in death by her husband of 61 years; one great-grandson, Clancey Silvers; her parents; and three sisters - Pearl Thomas, Iva Thomas and Lois Chambers.
Survivors include one son, Kenneth Morlan and wife-Betty - El Dorado Springs; four daughters - Kathy Jones, and husband-Jackie - Stockton, Jane Snavely and husband-Duane - Oklahoma City, OK, Joy Stephens and husband-Richard - Gardner, KS, and Vicki Greenwood and husband-Dennis - Adair, OK; two brothers, Floyd and Bonnie Haynes - Stockton and Clayton Haynes - Anaheim, CA; 12 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren - Karen and J.D. Stevenson, Marci and Lexie, Gary Jones and Seth, Larry Jones, Randy Jones, Amy and Doug Johnson and Tyler, Alan Morlan, Amanda Silvers and Claire, Heidi Snavely, Heather and Darren Bullock and Keegan, Jennifer and Joel Thomas, Katie, Kelly and Cole, Jared Greenwood and Janel and Rob Phelan; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Services were held on Monday, Oct. 4, in the Church of God (Holiness), El Dorado Springs with Rev. Kenneth Smith officiating. Musical selections were provided by Sherice Norman and Faith Trussell. Interment was in the El Dorado Springs Cemetery under the direction of the Hackleman and Sons Funeral Home, El Dorado Springs. Pallbearers were Darren Bullock, Joel Thomas, Rob Phelan, Gary Jones, Larry Jones and Jared Greenwood.
Opal Jackson Broughton-Wittmeyer
Opal Fern Jackson, 90, was born March 26, 1914, to Granvill and Bessie Stutesman Jackson and passed away Sept. 22, 2004.
She graduated from the El Dorado Springs High School, then taught two years at Roberts School.
On June 10, 1934, Opal and Donald Broughton were married. They made their home in Harwood, until Don was transferred to Boonville. They adopted Patsy Sue in 1937.
She and Don celebrated their 40th anniversary. Don passed away Nov. 4, 1974.
Opal married William Wittmeyer on Sept. 5, 1976.
She was a member of the First Baptist Church, New Franklin.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and her brother, Estel.
Survivors include her husband, William; daughter, Patsy Sue; step-children - Rodger, Phillip, and Sharon; several step-grandchildren; a sister, Nadyne Bond; and nieces; nephews and cousins.
Services were held Monday, Sept. 27, in the Markland-Gardner Funeral Home, New Franklin, with Rev. Dan Pritchard officiating.
Interment was in Walnut Grove Cemetery, Boonville, under the direction of Markland-Gardner Funeral Home, New Franklin. Pallbearer were Ed Langewisch, Mike Moser, Robert Carmichael, Ray Ferguson, Larry Wilmsmeyer, Chuck Higgins and Paul Berwanger.
Those attending the services from this area were: Cousins - Charles and Gladean Higgins, Kenneth and Charlene Broughton and Fern McMullin - El Dorado Springs; a sister, Nadyne Bond - Walker; and a niece, Linda Coonrod - Nevada.
Ashli Nicole O'Dell
Ashli Nicole O'Dell, 17, a senior at El Dorado Springs High School, was born June 21, 1987, in Kansas City, the daughter of Gregory Wayne O'Dell and Cynthia Lynn Shropshire and passed away Wednesday night, Nov. 24, 2004, as a result of a motor vehicle accident southwest of El Dorado Springs.
She lived most of her life in El Dorado Springs after moving from Nevada. Ashli attended all of her school years in El Dorado Springs where through the years she had been involved in band, cheerleading, student council and earlier basketball, softball and t-ball. Just recently she had been employed at Simone's Drive-In. She loved her friends, talking on the phone, working with computers and was a very special sister to her siblings. It was her intention to attend college in Fort Scott next fall and to become a Registered Nurse following in the footsteps of her mother.
In November of 2000, she was baptized by Pastor Duane Gayman at the Living Hope Fellowship Church in Nevada.
Survivors include her parents, Cindi Shropshire and Gerrit Brouwer, of the home in El Dorado Springs; Greg and Lana O'Dell - Nevada; her special "father," Lalan Cole - El Dorado Springs; three brothers - Zachary Ricketts - Springfield, Nick Cole - El Dorado Springs and Derek O'Dell - Nevada; one sister, Emily Ricketts - Nevada; grandparents - Gary and Margie Shropshire - Schell City, Glenn and Alberta O'Dell - Golden City, Grace Colvin - Nevada and Merylin and Linda Colvin - Oklahoma City, OK; great-grandparents, George and Joyce Menego - Schell City; a special friend, Dalton Howell - El Dorado Springs; aunts; uncles; cousins; other relatives and many friends.
Services were held Saturday, Nov. 27, at the El Dorado Springs High School with Bro. Gene Gray officiating. Musical selections were "Butterfly Kisses," "Ain't No Mountain High Enough" and "My Redeemer Lives." Pallbearers were Brian Davis, Mike Davis, Tony Davis, Eric Davis, Zachary Ricketts, Randy O'Dell and Scott O'Dell. Interment was in the Green Lawn Cemetery, Schell City, under the direction of the Lewis-Hoagland Funeral Home in Schell City.
A scholarship fund has been established in Ashli's name at Heritage State Bank in El Dorado Springs for students wishing to further their education in the field of nursing.
Kenneth Wayne Wallace
Kenneth Wayne Wallace, 69, Nevada, formerly of Archie, was born Oct. 28, 1935, in Excelsior Springs, to Rial Hunt Wallace and Marjorie Rella Riley Dodd and passed away Friday, Nov. 26, 2004, at the University of Kansas Medical Center, Kansas City, KS.
Ken married Shirley Ann Burris on Oct. 29, 1955, who preceded him in death. He then married S. Irene Henderson on Nov. 30, 1975, in Nevada. She survives of the home.
Ken was raised in Vernon County and spent the majority of his life there. He retired as an iron worker in 1990 after 30 years with Local #10 in Kansas City.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife; one step-son, Billy Henderson; and one granddaughter, Angie Leann Abbott.
Survivors include his wife, Irene; five children - Kurtis Wallace - Huntsville, Debbie Wallace and Tammy Kahl - Fayetteville, AR, Marjorie Needs - Harrisonville, and Randy Wallace - Paris, AR; three step-children - Candis Mainard - Raymore, Rhonda Staton - Ottawa, KS, and Jackie Ammerman - Archie; two brothers, Gaylord Wallace - Sheldon and Richard Wallace - Brazil, IN; four sisters - Dorothy Henimer - El Dorado Springs, Betty Wilhite - Lamar, Glora Estes - El Dorado Springs and Glenda Thomas - Sheldon; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Services were Tuesday, Nov. 30, at Ferry Funeral Home, Nevada. Interment followed in St. James Cemetery, Milford.
