NITA KAY (MOORE) HILL
Nita Kay Hill, 62, the daughter of William Cecil and Nita Lucille (Fritz) Moore, was born June 22, 1939, in Lamar and passed from this life on Tuesday, March 5, 2002, at her home in Lee's Summit.
During her childhood, Nita Kay, along with her family, lived in Schell City where she attended school and became a member of the Schell City Christian Church. One of the graduates of the Class of 1956, Nita Kay was the president of her senior class.
On Aug. 5, 1960, she was united in marriage to the president of the Class of 1957, James Larry Hill, at the Schell City Christian Church. To their union three sons were born.
After their marriage, Nita Kay and Larry moved to the Lee's Summit area where she remained until her death. She had worked after graduation, then stayed home while the children were young to care for them. During the last 15 years before her illness, she had been an employee of the Lee's Summit Wal-Mart store. During the past three and a half years, she had fought a courageous battle against breast cancer, enduring many visits to doctors, tests and chemotherapy in an effort to live. She was surrounded by her family when she passed away.
Nita Kay loved music and was an accomplished piano player. She also loved people, most of all her family and friends.
Survivors include her husband, Larry, El Dorado Springs; her three sons-Larry Alan Hill and James Douglas Hill, both of Lee's Summit, and Steven Gordon Hill, Kansas City; and of special mention is her brother-in-law, Sanford Richards, and his children. She was preceded in death by her parents, one brother and one sister.
Memorial services were held Friday, March 8, at the Schell City Christian Church with Pastor Marvin Jamison officiating. Musical selections were provided by Sharon Goodman and David Souza. Cremation with private interment was held at the Green Lawn Cemetery, Schell City under the direction of the Lewis-Hoagland Funeral Home, Schell City. Memorial contributions are suggested to the American Cancer Society or Kansas City Hospice in care of the funeral home.
RUBY L. O'DELL
Ruby L. O'Dell, 78, El Dorado Springs, passed away on Saturday morning, March 9, 2002, at St. John's Regional Health Center in Springfield. She was born on Aug. 3, 1923, in Wheeling, AR, the daughter of Dan and Ellen Kersey.
Ruby grew up and attended school in Salem, AR. In October of 1941, she was united in marriage to Edgar O'Dell in Mountain Home, AR. To this union, three children were born; Richard O'Dell, Dee Jeppson and Marilyn Masters.
In 1958, the family moved to Kansas City. She was employed at Milgram's Grocers until 1969, when the family moved to El Dorado Springs. During this time, Ruby worked at Sibley and Thatch and Harold Collins Auction Service in El Dorado Springs.
In 1970, the family moved to a farm near Humansville. In 1979, Ruby opened an antique and collectable store that she called, "Granny's Place." Ruby truly enjoyed that time of her life. She kept busy buying and refinishing antiques, canning and spending her time with her grandchildren. Ruby also taught oil painting and started an oil painting club in Humansville.
In 1991, Ruby retired from the store and moved to El Dorado Springs. After moving to El Dorado Springs, she spent a great deal of her time quilting and crocheting for other people. In her spare time she loved to play Bingo and cards with her friends and neighbors. Ruby was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Her grandchildren always had a special place in her heart.
Ruby was preceded in death by her mother and father, Dan and Ellen Kersey; her three sister-Effie Kersey, Betha Elliott and Beulah Maguffee; and one daughter, Marilyn Masters. She leaves her husband, Ed O'Dell and granddaughter, Michele Masters, of the home. Also surviving are her son, Richard O'Dell and his wife, Janet-Osage Beach; her daughter, Dee Jeppson, and her husband, Roy, Somis, Ca; her grandchildren-Eric O'Dell, Osage Beach; Dolynn Dilly and her husband, Kevin, Deerfield, Vanessa O'Dell, Lincoln, NE and Shelly Zartman and her husband, Rob-El Dorado Springs; her great-grandchildren-Devin, Evinn and Kristin Dilly, Deerfield and many nieces, nephews and good friends.
Service were held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, March 13, at the Hackleman Chapel with Rev. Brent Bland officiating. Musical selections were provided by Faith Trussell. Interment was in the Clintonville Cemetery under the direction of the Hackleman and Sons Funeral Home. Pallbearers were Tommy Cameron, Henry Cameron, Charles Cameron, Larry Burk, Rick Foster and Guy O'Dell.
DOROTHY LEE PORTER
Dorothy Lee Porter, 76, the daughter of Willis Leon and Mable Mae (Goodwin) Robinson, was born Aug. 30, 1925, in Rockvile and passed from the life on Friday, March 8, 2002, at St. John's Hospital in Joplin.
Dorothy attended school in Rockville then for several years relocated to the Kansas City area where she worked. It was while in Kansas City that she met and married Harold Cecil Reed. To their union, four children were born. In 1962 the family moved to Schell City where the children attended school.
In 1964 Dorothy began employment with the International Shoe Company in El Dorado Springs but left there after a time to open a restaurant in Schell City. Dorothy was well known in the area for her cooking, but was especially famous for her coconut cream pie. She was also an accomplished seamstress.
Dorothy enjoyed crossword puzzles, Branson music shows, watching TV games and the music of Charlie Pride. But anyone who knew Dorothy knew that she must surely be the #1 Kansas City Chiefs fan in the entire world. She followed them faithfully, keeping a notebook of weekly scores.
Dorothy also seemed to process a keen sense of herself and the people around her. She always made reference to the fact that she might not have ever gone to college or attained a PhD, but she always instilled in her children the love of God, the drive to continue on in the face of adversity and she wanted them to understand that God would never give them more than they could handle. More than anything, she loved her family.
Survivors include two sons, Harold Reed and his wife, Georgia, Branson and Ronald Reed and his wife, Phyllis, Schell City; two daughters, Susan Underwood and her husband, John, Harwood and Debra Purtle and her husband, Robert, El Dorado Springs; one step-son, Cecil E. Reed, and his wife, Patty, Branson; one brother, Joe Robinson, and his wife, Clarice-Butler; two step-brothers, Robert Vantellman, Parkville and Sam Vantellman, Schell City; two step-sisters, Patty Crowder, Appleton City and Carol Bailey, Schell City; 10 grandchildren-Kim Haddiz, Kevin Reed, Susie Treas, Patty Yarnell, Phil Reed, Tracy Reed, Jessie Reed, Bradley Landreth, Sam Reed and Milisa Freund; one step-granddaughter, Lisa Janes; 10 great-grandchildren-Kirk Hadddix, Nathan Haddix, Jacob Treas, Faith Rowland, Alex Reed, Sidnee Freund, Sydney Moore, Dereck Treas, Hunter Yarnell and Layknn Moore; four step great-grandchildren-Mandy and Matthew Bennet, Brandon Jennings and Cody Janes; two nieces, Jolene Lambert and Carla Bock, also survive, as well as a great niece, Calee McElwain, and a great-great-niece, Marissa McElwain, other relatives and many friends. Of special mention is Kim Goodman who was liked another granddaughter to Dorothy.
She was preceded in death by one grandson, Ronnie Reed; one step-granddaughter, LeAnn Watson; one great-grandson, Jered Moore and one nephew, Steve Robinson.
Graveside services were Monday, March 11, at the Green Lawn Cemetery in Schell City with Bro. Gene Gray officiating. Interment followed the service in the Green Lawn Cemetery. Arrangements were under the direction of the Lewis-Hoagland Funeral Home, Schell City. Memorial contributions are suggested to the Fair Haven Park in care of the funeral home.
PHILIP B. RUBLEE
Philip B. Rublee, 93, formerly of El Dorado Springs, was born on May 12, 1908, in Colfax, WI, the son of Ella and Julius Rublee. He had one brother and two sisters, who all preceded him in death. Philip passed away on Saturday, March 9, 2002, at Point Lookout Health Care Center in Hollister.
Philip worked with his father on the family dairy farm until he joined the Air Force in 1943. He had attended the University of Wisconsin in Menomonee, WI.
On Dec. 28, 1937, he was united in marriage to Lillian Nielsen. To this union one son, Neil, was born.
Philip served in the Air Force Intelligence during WWII. He then made the Air Force his career and retired in 1964 with the rank of Master Sergeant.
Philip was saved during his early years in the Air Force. During his tour of duty in the Philippines, he taught Sunday School. Philip and Lilian were faithful church attendees as long as they physically able. They prayed and read the Bible daily together. They supported many ministries, including the Chetek Bible Camp in Wisconsin.
Philip enjoyed his four grandchildren and later his four great-grandchild. When Lillian's health began to decline, he was very careful and attentive to her needs.
He will be truly missed by all his family and friends.
Survivors include one son, Neil Rublee, and his wife, Diane-Branson; his grandchildren-Greg and Maria Rublee, Kristian Middaugh, Suzanne and Dan Brown and David and Tonya Rublee; and his great-grandchildren-Danielle Middaught, Austin Brown, Wyatt and Leticia Rublee, all to whom he was known as "Ubba." Other survivors include numerous nieces and nephews, including Wayne and Dale Carlson, Patricia White and Glen and Donna Nelson.
Services will begin at 11 a.m. Thursday, March 14, at the Hackleman Chapel with Rev. Milan Bourland officiating. Musical selections will be provided by Vera Bourland. Interment will be in the Herriman Chapel Cemetery under the direction of the Hackleman and Sons Funeral Home. Pallbearers will be David Rublee, Wayne Carlson, Leo Lady, Don Moomaw and Bill Keeton.
ANNETTA JANE BURRUS MILLER
Annetta Jane Burrus Miller, 86, El Dorado Springs, was born on June 18, 1915, in Cedar County, the daughter of John and Pearl Burrus. Annetta passed away on Tuesday afternoon, March 12, 2002, at the Cedar County Memorial Hospital.
Annetta attended school at Pleasant Ridge School in Cedar County. At an early age, Annetta accepted Christ as her savior. Although not a member of the First Baptist Church, she and her husband attended the First Baptist Church of El Dorado Springs as long their health permitted and they had enjoyed and appreciated the radio services and visits from the church members.
Annetta and her husband, James F. Miller, met as very young children and lived on adjoining farms until their marriage on Oct. 9, 1933. At the time of his death, they had celebrated 66 years of marriage and the birth of four children. Her husband preceded her in death in 2000 and one son, James Edward, passed away in 1986.
Annetta is survived by her three daughters and sons-in-law, Nancy and Ernie Harris and Donna and Bennie Livengood, all of El Dorado Springs and Mary and David Winn of Hansville, WA. Also surviving are her sister, Louise Embry, Huntington Beach, CA; a brother-in-law, Carl Woodford and a sister-in-law, Susanne Burrus both of El Dorado Springs; nine grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; and many other close relatives and friends.
Annetta and Jim lived on farms in Cedar County for many years before moving to their home in El Dorado Springs in 1960. Annetta worked at Dunbrooke Shirt Factory and the Community Nursing Home. After retiring, Annetta and Jim enjoyed bowling and the ensuing friendships. Annetta was a member of the Sportsmanship Club of El Dorado Springs. She was a loving care giver to her son, her mother and her husband before their deaths. She will be missed by all who knew her.
Services were held on Friday morning, March 15, at the Hackleman Chapel with Rev. Tom Willoughby officiating. Musical selections were provided by Sonya Harris and Brandi Harris. Interment was in the Clintonville Cemetery under the direction of the Hackleman and Sons Funeral Home. Pallbearers were Brent Livengood, Brian Livengood, Steve Harris, Terry Harris, Fred Harris, John Burrus and Wayne Rogers.
FINIS OFFIELD
Finis Elmer Leslie Offield, 87, a retired carpenter, died Tuesday, March 12, 2002, at his home in Salinas.
He was born March 4, 1915, in Walker. He was a carpenter for Harden Farms for 39 years. He enjoyed fishing, hunting and taking care of his family. During WWII, he served in the U.S. Navy with the Seabees.
Mr. Offield is survived by his wife of 62 years, Leota Offield; two sons, John Offield of Salinas and Harold Offield of Redding; four daughters-Darlene Offield and Arlene Perales of Salinas, and Rita Whitesell and Diana Coonce of Reno; two brothers, David Keller Offield and Merl Westley Offield of Missouri; 16 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.
Graveside services were held Friday, March 15, at the Garden of Memories Cemetery.
LYLE EDWARD CHRISTY
Lyle Edward Christy, 69, El Dorado Springs, passed away on Thursday, March 21, 2002, at his home. He was born on Dec. 29, 1932, at Belle Plaine, KS, the son of Harry and Eunice Christy.
Lyle served his country during the Korean War. He was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal and the Korean Service Medal.
In recent years, Lyle worked doing custom farming for various people in the community. He also worked for Key Industries in Nevada for a short period of time. While there, he made many good friends.
Lyle was united in marriage to Kay on Sept. 19, 1988, in Nashville, TN. They have shared 13 blessed years together. Lyle was a very loving husband, father, step-father and grandfather.
Lyle was preceded in death by his parents and one son, Eddie Christy. Those who survive to always keep the memory of Lyle in their hearts are his wife, Kay, of the home; his son, Lyle Christy Jr.-Texas; his daughter, Cathy, Marionville; his step-daughter, Kris Parker and her husband, Melvin-Rich Hill; his father and mother-in-law, Bob and Edith Pettibon, Nevada. Also surviving are his grandchildren-Candice and Dylan-Texas, Kenneth, Sabrina and Dakota, Marionville and Dalton, Derek and Dustin-Rich Hill; one brother, Leroy Christy, El Dorado Springs and cousins. Lyle also had a lot of good neighbors.
Memorial services were held on Sunday afternoon, March 24, at the Hackleman Chapel with Rev. Brent Bland officiating. Musical selections were provided by Faith Trussell. Services were under the direction of the Hackleman and Sons Funeral Home.
