Elton Francis 'Hotdog' Markham
Elton Francis “Hotdog” Markham, 79, El Dorado Springs, was born in Cedar County on July 18, 1927, to Frances “Frank” Marion and Iola Grace Murray Markham, the oldest of two sons. He passed away Sunday, June 3, 2007, at Community Springs Nursing Home after a short battle with cancer.
Elton was united in marriage to Vernie Joan Neely on Dec. 24, 1955. To this union two children were born, Randall and Linda Kay.
After graduation from high school in El Dorado Springs, Elton served two years in the Korean Conflict, stationed in Germany as a heavy equipment operator and driver for the company commander. Upon returning from Germany, he resumed farming on the family farm north of El Dorado Springs, where he eventually bought his own farm in 1956. He lived there most of the time until his passing.
During Elton's life he did many different jobs. He worked three years for the El Dorado Springs R-2 Schools as a bus driver and built houses in El Dorado Springs with Wilmer Smith and his brother, Leo Markham. In later years, he ran his own feed business from his home and the Appleton City area. Through all of his jobs he continued to farm and do custom hay baling.
Many young men from his neighborhood obtained their first job from him, baling hay. When you worked for Elton, you became one of his family. They were expected to eat their meal with his own family if they were there at meal time. Each one of these men still hold a special place in the family's heart. One of Elton's proudest moments was when one of the young men returned to El Dorado Springs after 30 years to help him hay once again.
Elton was always ready and willing to help friends and neighbors in time of need. One young man of the El Dorado Springs area credits Elton with saving his life. He had been to the Taberville Bar and, of course, had a little too much to drink and started home. Since Elton only lived three miles south of Taberville, this young man stopped there for help at midnight. Elton made this young man stay at his home until he could get the kid's dad there to pick him up.
Elton's later years were spent taking care of his two granddaughters while their parents worked. They love to help their granddad garden and do all sorts of things. Their favorite time was when he would take them for a trailer ride behind the lawn mower.
Elton enjoyed traveling and visiting friends. He frequented many sales just to visit with many friends and neighbors. He loved to hunt and fish, but he never did get his `big buck.'
He enjoyed teaching his children the importance of family and to care for nature. He was not a wealthy man with material objects, but he was wealthy in all things that mattered, his friends and family.
Elton was preceded in death by his wife, Joan; parents, Frank and Iola; and numerous brothers and sisters-in-law.
He is survived by one son, Randall Markham, Webb City; one daughter, Linda Knight and husband, Rick; two granddaughters, Rickayla and Raelynn, all of El Dorado Springs; one brother, Leo Markham and wife, Nina Faye, El Dorado Springs; one brother-in-law, Ermon Cubbage, Nevada; and many nieces, nephews, other family and a host of friends who will greatly miss him and a special friend and caretaker, Lola Faye Amick.
Services will begin at 2 p.m. Saturday, June 9, in the Hackleman Chapel with burial in Pleasant Grove Cemetery. Visitation will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday evening. Arrangements are under direction of Hackleman and Sons Funeral Home.
