Phyllis Marie Nicholas
Phyllis Marie Nicholas, 92, El Dorado Springs, passed away Jan. 6, 2008, at Bates County Memorial, Butler. She was born Dec. 20, 1915, in Cedar Springs, the daughter of George W. and Chloe Ellen (Rittenhour) Nicholas.
On Oct. 21, 1936, she was united in marriage to Lerel Nicholas, coincidentally having the same last name. They had much in common, loving life on the farm. They had a great deal of success with both livestock and crops. They spent many years on this acreage located three to four miles north of Hwy. 54, close to the Sac River. Many nieces and nephews had enjoyable time visiting Uncle Lerel and Aunt Phyllis. During these times, they helped with various chores on the farm, (most got a lesson in milking cows), and especially enjoyed her delicious home-cooked meals. Much of this bountiful spread came right out of the large garden. Phyllis and Lerel had no children of their own but they made the nieces and nephews feel so very welcome.
After Phyllis moved to town, she spent many hours volunteering for the Hospital Auxiliary.
Phyllis love attending Riverview Bible Church. She was baptized in August 1950, and had many friends among the Riverview congregation. Phyllis served as a Sunday School teacher for several years and as the missionary secretary for the church. When missionaries were on furlough, she would often entertain them in her home. Her hospitality was well-known and much appreciated. She was a faithful servant to the Lord Jesus Christ, the Bible and Christianity.
Phyllis was preceded in death by her husband; father; mother; one sister, Myrle Shelby; one brother, Earl Nicholas, Myrle's twin; one niece, Nixie Nicholas; and four nephews, Bobby Lee Nicholas, Wayne Burhart, George Nicholas and Bob Burhart.
Phyllis is survived by one sister, Gladys Brockman, Adrian, and a host of nieces and nephews.
Services will begin at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Jan. 10, at the Hackleman Chapel. Visitation will be prior to the service from 10 till 11 a.m. Albert Lee Venter and Paul Burhart will officiate the service, with music provided by the family. Pallbearers will be Johnny Venter, Gene Shumaker, Joe Norval, Myron Rapp, Rusty Norval, Frank Haynes and Mike Norval. Honorary pallbearers will be Joe Decker, John Norval, Leo Bland, Roy Norval, Jim Truluck and Bert McFadden. Final disposition will be in Love Cemetery under the direction of Hackleman and Sons Funeral Home.
Thomas E. Liggett
Thomas E. Liggett, 72, El Dorado Springs, formerly of Schell City, passed away Monday, Jan. 7, 2008, at Sac Osage Hospital in Osceola.
He is survived by his friend, Myrtle Tull, of the home; two sons, Stephen Liggett, Milford, MI; and John Liggett, Commerce Township, MI; two brothers, Bob Liggett and Jerry Liggett; two sisters, Peggy Parker and Mary Parker; and eight grandchildren.
Memorial services will begin at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 10, at the Lewis, Hoagland Funeral Home in Schell City, with interment in the Green Lawn Cemetery, Schell City, under the direction of the Lewis Hoagland Funeral Home.
Jeffrey Alan Moos
Jeffrey Alan Moos, 44, passed away Dec. 11, 2007, in Goodspring, TN.
He is survived by his wife, Anna; two daughters, Rayanne and Alex - all of the home; his Mother, of Las Vegas, NV; mother-in-law, Sharon Dralle, California; father-in-law, Charles Dralle and wife, Martha Kaye, Branson; sister-in-law, Laurie Foster and husband, Don, California; brother-in-law, Christopher Dralle - El Dorado Springs; and three nephews - Stephen Foster, and Jacob and Blake Dralle.
Jeff was a construction worker and served our country in the Navy. He will be remembered for his smile and happy attitude. A tragic accident took this earthly life, but he lives forever with Our Lord.
Elmo Neal Gerster
Elmo Neal Gerster, 91, Schell City, the son of Charles Otis and Daisy Ethel (Scott) Gerster was born Sept. 7, 1916, in Walker, and passed from this life on Tuesday, Jan. 8, 2008, at his home in Schell City.
Elmo attended school in Dedrick and then graduated from El Dorado Springs High School in 1934. On Aug. 14, 1949, Elmo was united in marriage to Rebecca Fern Flake and to this union 11 children were born. They moved to Schell City in 1950 where they made their home for the rest of their lives.
Through his working years, Elmo worked at the Dedrick Store, delivered milk, worked for the telephone company and farmed, but was probably best known for the 19 years that he worked as the janitor at the Schell City School. He retired from there in 1979 and then spent more time gardening and selling produce at the local farmers market.
He was a longtime member of the First Baptist Church in Schell City where he served as both a deacon and a Sunday School teacher. He worked as a 4-H leader for more than 49 years. He recently served as Grand Marshall of the Schell City Fall Festival.
Elmo was preceded in death by his wife, Fern, who passed away in October 1983, after 34 years of marriage; his parents, Charles Otis and Daisy Ethel Gerster; one brother, Jewell Gerster and his wife, Mary; an infant grandson, Joseph Gale Gerster; and infant great-grandson, T.W. Corbin; a granddaughter, Joni Marie Gerster; three brothers-in-law, Richard Elder, Bob Flake, and Bud Flake and his wife, Betty; one niece, Claudia Elder, two nephews, Charles Richard Gerster and David Neal Gerster.
Survivors include six sons, Neal Gerster and his wife, Connie, Walker; Harvey Gerster and his wife, Connie, Schell City; Gale Gerster and his wife, Linda, Nevada; Lyle Gerster and his wife, Kimberly Ц El Dorado Springs, John Gerster and his wife, Beth, Nevada; and James Gerster, Schell City; five daughters, Beth Kemper and her husband, Larry, Nevada; Paula Corbin and her husband, Randy, Carl Junction, Rita Hecox and her husband, Frank, Joplin; Mary Kitsmiller and her husband, Gary, Nevada; and Ruth Gerster, Schell City; one sister, Velva Mae Elder, Liberty; one sister-in-law, Shirley Flake, Schell City; 21 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren; cousins, nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.
Services were held on Saturday, Jan. 12, at the NEVC Elementary School in Schell City with Brother Terry Mosher and Reverend John Nichols officiating. Musical selections were provided by Connie S. Gerster, Beth Gerster and Kay Harper. Pallbearers were - Jason Gerster, Travis Corbin, Jordan Gerster, Michael Kemper, Tim Richmond and J.T. Kitsmiller. Honorary Pallbearers were: Jerry Cox Jr., John Kuhnert, John Hill, Travis Potter, Brandon Hecox and Jim Chandler. Interment was in the Green Mound Cemetery in Harwood. Memorial contributions are suggested to the NEVC School and the Vernon County Youth Fair. The funeral arrangement for Elmo Gerster were entrusted to the Lewis-Hoagland Funeral Home, Schell City.
Wanda Maxine Turri
Wanda Turri, 83, Ukiah, CA, passed away on Friday, Nov. 9, 2007.
Born April 11, 1924, at home in Montevallo, she has resided in the Ukiah area for the past 62 years.
Wanda graduated from the El Dorado Springs High School in 1945.
She lived on Mill Creek Road for 57 years, at the site that eventually became Mill Creek Nursery, which she owned and operated for more than 40 years.
Wanda also taught for over 20 years at River Union School. She was proud of her students, maintaining a successful and quality nursery business, as well as her family. She unselfishly participated in their lives until the very end. She will be remembered for her strong will, her knowledge, work ethic, honesty, unselfishness, kind heart and friendly face.
Her favorite sayings were, "make a list" and "better get it done."
She is preceded in death by her parents, John and Rena Hudson; brother, Estel Hudson; and her husband, Joseph Turri.
Wanda is survived by two sons, John Turri, and wife, Connie - Ukiah; and Fred Turri, and wife, Eva, Ukiah; her brother, William (Bill) Hudson, his wife, Martha; grandchildren, John Turri, and wife, Michelle, Reno, NV; Allison Turri - Ukiah, Brad Turri, Ukiah; Melissa Rhodes, and husband, Jeremiah; great-grandchildren, Brynn Gibson, and Jaiden and Ashlynn Turri
A celebration of life was held on from 2 to 4 p.m. Friday, Nov. 16, 2007, at 1080 Maple Avenue in Ukiah, CA. The Eversole Mortuary was in charge of arrangements.
Elton Earl Caldwell
Elton Earl Caldwell, 86, Nevada, passed away Wednesday, Jan. 9, 2008, at Moore-Few Care Center - Nevada, following a lengthy illness. He was born May 1, 1921, in Cedar County, to James Thomas Caldwell and Ella Payne Hess Caldwell. He married Ellen L. Short on April 13, 1945, in San Diego, CA, and she survives of the home.
Elton was born and raised in Cedar County and graduated from El Dorado Springs High School. He joined the U.S. Navy at the age of 21 and served in WWII from 1942-1945. He served on the U.S.S. North Hampton in the South Pacific and he was one of the few survivors when that ship was sunk. He later served on the U.S.S. Vireo. He took part in 17 major battles. He was a second-class diver and retired as Boatsman Mate Second Class. At one time while serving on the U.S.S. Vireo he served for two years and six days before seeing land again. He was awarded the following medals: the WWII Victory, Good Conduct, Navy, Philippine Liberation, Asiatic Pacific Campaign, and American Campaign. Following the service, he worked on the pipeline in Iola, KS, for two years and returned to Vernon County in 1948. He farmed in the Walker area and bought a fleet of lime trucks. Elton operated a general store, feed store and was postmaster and hauled livestock from 1953-1958 in Dederick. He owned and operated the Cottey Grocery. In 1958, moved to Nevada and managed various different fertilizer companies; lime and fertilizer business for 32 years; C & S Fertilizer with Wilma Shupe over 15 years. Most recently he raised cattle.
Survivors include his wife, Ellen, of the home; two sons, Earl Caldwell and his wife, Joyce, Nevada; and Terry Caldwell and his wife, Susie, Nevada; five grandchildren, Marty Caldwell and his wife, Sandy, Nevada, Misty Shepherd and her husband, Curtis - Diamond, Eric Caldwell and his wife, Leray - Nevada Mendy Legleiter and her husband, Leon, Durham, NC; and Justin Caldwell and his wife, Claudia, Nevada; eight great-grandchildren, Kelsey Caldwell, Erica Caldwell, Triston Shepherd, Colton Caldwell, Owen Caldwell, Tori Shepherd, Riley Legleiter and McKenzie Cox; two brothers, Virgil Caldwell, El Dorado Springs; and Forest Caldwell, Muskogee, OK; three stepsisters, Rosalee Cross, state of California, Kathryn Holt, Kansas City; and Lorene Westerlin, Osceola.
He was preceded in death by one son, Kelly Caldwell, on March 4, 1985; two brothers, Alfred and James; two sisters, Jewell Messick and Dixie Holcomb; and three stepbrothers, Carl Eason, Cecil Eason and Virgil Eason.
Services were held Saturday, Jan. 12, at Ferry Funeral Home, Nevada, with John Nichols officiating. Interment under the direction of the Ferry Funeral Home was in Newton Burial Park, Nevada, with Military Honors.

Joe Dean Janes Norval
Joseph (Joe) Dean Norval, 46, El Dorado Springs, passed away Friday, Feb. 8, 2008, at his home. He was born December 19, 1961, in Rockford, IL.
Joe graduated from El Dorado Springs High School in 1980. On Feb. 14, 1982, he was united in marriage to Llanona Rae Ryan. They were later divorced.
Joe was a good man at heart who was loved and will be missed by many.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents - Glendine Janes, John and Dorothy Norval, and Ed and Stella Elliott; and his father, Joseph Janes.
He is survived by his daughters, Debbie and husband, Nick Bullard, Jessica and husband, Martin McGee, and Brandi and husband, Jeremiah Rifenburg; sons, Patrick Williams and Michael Dotson; his parents, John and Mary Norval,Ц El Dorado Springs; brother, John (Julian) Norval III - Butler; sister, Letta Collin, Kansas City; three half-brothers, Rusty Janes, Ryan Janes and Butch Janes; grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Janes; four grandchildren, Brooke and Mary Abigail Bullard, Anre' McGee and Layla Rifenburg; aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, friends and family who loved and will miss him very much.
Services were Tuesday, Feb. 12, at the Sheldon Chapel in El Dorado Springs, with Minister Rusty Janes. Special music was, "Amazing Grace," "Wings of Dreams" and "Feed Jake." Casketbearers were: Gary Norval, Marty McGee, Harold Johnson, Nick Bullard, Jeremiah Rifenburg and Elmer Sharer. Interment was in the Peasant Springs (Oyer) Cemetery under the direction of the Sheldon Funeral Home, El Dorado Springs.
Burl Emet Phillips
Burl Emet Phillips, 97, Dunnegan, passed away Wednesday, Feb. 6, 2008. He was born July 22, 1910, at Bear Creek, to Noah Pleasant and Lelia Ahart Phillips.
Burl grew up in the Bear Creek and Mountain Grove area and attended Mountain Grove School. He worked on the family farm until WWII.
Burl married Jessie M. Moore on April 7, 1942. He left for the service shortly after the marriage. Burl served in the Army 82nd Ordnance and Army Engineers. He served in North Africa, Italy, then to France, Belgium, Holland and Germany. He was in the Battle of the Bulge. After the war, he returned to Springfield in 1945. He worked at O'Rielly Army Hospital US Medical Center and US Post Office until returning to the family farm at Bear Creek in 1951. In 1956, he was elected for Cedar County Assessor for four terms and then retired.
Burl and Jessie had two children, Joseph Burl Phillips, Stockton; and Robert Harold Phillips, Dunnegan.
Burl loved to visit and had a remarkable memory for history, especially family history of people in Cedar County. Burl was interested in politics and voted in every election from 1932 to Feb. 5, 2008, the day before he died. Burl was saved at a young age.
Burl was preceded in death by his wife, Jessie, and sister, Bernice Willoughby. Burl is survived by two sons, Joseph B. Phillips and wife, Carol, Stockton, and Robert H. Phillips and wife, Julia, Dunnegan; grandchildren, Bron Phillips and wife, Dana, Drexel; Tondra Lawson and husband, Ron, Vinita, OK; Bren Phillips, Hanahan, SC; Sam Phillips, Jim Phillips, Carrie Phillips, all of Dunnegan; and four great-grandchildren, Daryn, Alexandra (Ally), Briana and Riley Phillips.
Services were held Sunday, Feb. 10, in Brumback Funeral Home - Stockton, with burial in Lindley Prairie Cemetery, near Bear Creek, under the direction of the Brumback Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Heart Association.
