Jack King Whitesell
Jack King Whitesell, 75, California, passed away Jan. 29, 2008, in California. He was born at home in Filley, to Kenneth and Bonnie Whitesell on March 18, 1932.
Jack attended elementary school at Cherry Valley in a one-room schoolhouse and graduated from the El Dorado Springs High School as valedictorian of his class. He continued his education at the University of Missouri, where he earned his Masters Degree in education. He taught school in St. Louis until 1960, when he moved to Southern California, teaching and counseling at San Marino High School. After five years, Jack began his long career at Orange Coast College as a counselor, psychology professor and career-planning instructor from 1965 until his retirement in 1999.
Jack was known for his work ethic, his knowledge and his warm, caring and inviting demeanor. He had special interests in counseling international students, working students looking to change careers and older adults returning to college to continue their education. He felt personally responsible for every student with whom he ever worked, to see that they reached a level of success. His encouragement had a major impact on his students' lives long after college.
Besides education, Jack's passions were gardening, traveling, cooking, classical music and spending time with family on the farm in Missouri.
Jack is survived by three brothers, a sister and many nieces and nephews. He will be greatly missed by all whose lives he touched.
Services were held at Pacific View Memorial Park in Carona del Mar, CA, on Tuesday, Feb. 5. A memorial service will be held at Brumback Funeral Home, 306 South High Street, Stockton, at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 16, under the direction of the Brumback Funeral Home – Stockton.

John Samuel Barclay
John Samuel Barclay, 88, El Dorado Springs, passed away on March 15, 2008, at Cedar County Memorial Hospital. John was born Oct. 10, 1919, in Osceola, the only child of Oscar L. and Lettie M. (Wright) Barclay.
John spent his early childhood in Osceola and Roscoe. He graduated from El Dorado Springs High School in 1937. He was a 60 year member of the Masonic Lodge and the Shriner's and a member of the local VFW Post.
On April 11, 1941, he was inducted into the Army. He received his basic training at Ft. Lewis, WA, and left the states on Aug. 28, 1941. His battalion, in which he trained, was split up and his company was sent to Alaska and the rest to the Philippines. His outfit was scheduled to join the others, but war was declared and they remained in Alaska. He received an honorable discharge on Sept. 29, 1945.
After returning from the war, he started work at the International Shoe Factory, where he met his future wife, Leola Fern Davis. John and Fern were married Jan. 9, 1947, only being apart when one or the other was in the hospital. To this union three children were born – Steven Art, Deanna Lee and Sheila Sue.
John had a good sense of humor and managed to get a smile from most people he met John retired from Mid America Dairy in 1982. After retirement, he looked after his parents, worked in his garden and enjoyed his grandchildren.
John was preceded in death by his son, Steven Art, Feb. 9, 1950, his father, Oscar, July 8, 1983, and his mother, Lettie, June 3, 1991.
Survivors include his wife, Fern, of the home; two daughters, Deanna Lee Shouse and husband, Guy, and Sheila Sue Benham and her husband, Gary – all of El Dorado Springs; six grandchildren – Kent Shouse and wife, Jessy – Joplin, Lee Shouse – Joplin, Whitney Benham – Ottawa, KS, Margaret, Josh and Katie Benham – El Dorado Springs; and a sister-in-law, Bettie Davis – El Dorado Springs. He will be sadly missed by a host of family and friends.
Services were held Monday, March 17, at the Hackleman Chapel with Rev. James Coleman and Rev. Brent Bland officiating. Music was provided by Vera Bourland. A visitation was held at the chapel Sunday afternoon with Masonic Rites. Burial was in the El Dorado Springs City Cemetery under the direction of Bland-Hackleman Funeral Home. Pallbearers were his fellow Masonic brothers – Ron Zimmerman, Ed Morlan, George Reeves, Jim Ogle, Jerl Leonard and Ed Gettys.

Joel A. Arrington
Joel A. Arrington, 87, Collins, passed away Monday, March 17, 2008, at St. John's Health System in Springfield.
Mr. Arrington was a longtime Collins area resident and a veteran of the U.S. Navy.
Among local survivors is his wife, Edith, of the home.
Services will begin at 1 p.m. Saturday, March 22, at the Sheldon-Goodrich Chapel in Osceola. Burial under the direction of the Sheldon-Goodrich Funeral Home will be in the Macedonia Cemetery near Osceola.
The family will receive friends from noon until 1 p.m. Saturday at the Sheldon-Goodrich Chapel in Osceola.

Gerald Harms
Gerald Harms, 80, Schell City, passed away Saturday, March 15, 2008, in Schell City.
Survivors include his wife, Rogene, of the home; three sons – Mark, Craig and Van Harms – all of Jacksonville FL; one grandson; one sister, Ruth Ijams – Schell City; three step-daughters – Julie Schwartz – Lincoln, NE, Lori Tipton – Voone, IA, and Rosemary Micklich – Nevada.
Services will begin at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, March 20, at the Lewis Hoagland Funeral Home in Schell City.
Visitation was from 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, March 19, at the Lewis Hoagland Funeral Home, with the Masonic service at 7 p.m. Interment under the direction of the Lewis-Hoagland Funeral in Schell City will be in Lick Creek Cemetery – Perry, at 2 p.m. Friday, March 21.
Friends may call at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to the Shriners Hospital in care of the funeral home.

Inza M. Brasher
Inza Brasher, 92, Jerico Springs, passed away March 15, 2008, in the Barton County Hospital.
Inza Mabel Buck was born Feb. 14, 1916, in Barton County to Dell and Trixie Buck. She was baptized when she was 17, with her brother and sister at the Lamar Christian Church. She remained an active member of the Christian Church in Jerico Springs.
Inza began teaching in one-room schools and retired in 1979, after teaching 33 years. She graduated from Jerico Springs High School in 1935 and later graduated from Southwest Missouri State University. She married Carlyn Brasher June 2, 1940. This union produced four children – Charlotte, Charlene, Rick and Rhonda.
She was an active member of many professional and service organizations, including the Jerico Community Club where she served as reporter and president for many years. She served in many offices with the Jerico Order of the Eastern Star. She actively supported the Barton County Historical Society and Barton County Retired Educators.
Inza was a loving wife, mother, teacher and friend who gave her best to many jobs and activities. She was preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, Carlyn Brasher; her parents; brothers and sister; daughter, Charlotte and granddaughter Janet.
She is survived by her children - daughter, Charlene and Guy Roy – Harrisonville, her son, Rick Brasher and wife, Betty – Sheldon, and daughter, Rhonda Brasher – Kansas City; seven grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren; three sisters-in-law; many nieces and nephews and special friend, Vincil Warren.
Services were Tuesday in the Jerico Springs Christian Church. Burial was in the Brasher Cemetery under the direction of Long-Brumback Funeral Home – Jerico Springs. Memorial donations may be made to the Jerico Springs Community Club.

DAVID RYHS GERMEN
David Rhys Germen, 44, Nevada, passed away Jan. 22, 2001, at St. John Regional Medical Center, Joplin.
He was born Nov. 11, 1956, in San Pablo, CA, to Ellis and June Handley Germen. In August 1979 he married Leslie K. Pullin in Miami, OK.
Mr. Germen was a graduate of the Fort Scott Community College School of Nursing. He was employed as a registered nurse until complications of kidney failure no longer permitted him to work.
Survivors include his wife, Leslie, of the home; a son, Nathen Germen, of the home; a step-son, Jason Long, of the home; a daughter, Connie Townsen, Idaho; his mother, June Germen, El Dorado Springs; one brother, Martin Germen, Oregon; three sisters, Merry Bogart, Pinole, CA; Rebecca Achord , Kuna, ID; and Laurel Bryant - California. He was preceded in death by his father, Ellis Germen, and one brother, Chris Germen.
Private services will be held at a later date with arrangement by Evergreen Memorial Chapel, Nevada. Memorial contributions may be made to the family in care of Evergreen Memorial Chapel P.O. Box 894, Nevada, MO 64772.

CHARLES E. BRESHEARS
Charles E. Breshears, 91, El Dorado Springs, passed away Sunday, Jan. 21, 2001, at his home. He was born Sept. 30, 1909. He was an Army Veteran.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Johnny Breshears; and one sister, Daisy Osborne. He is survived by one niece, Alice Marles, Terrehaut, IN.
A graveside service was held Saturday, Jan. 27, 2001, at Fisher Cemetery near Preston under the direction of the Sheldon Funeral Home.

HELEN HLAVACEK ZARTMAN
Helen Hlavacek Zartman, 91, El Dorado Springs, passed away on Friday, Sept. 24, 1999, at the Stockton Nursing Home. She was born on April 2, 1908, in Hazen, Ark., the daughter of Henry and Emily Langer Hlavacek and moved to the Virgil City area at an early age.
She married John Ralph Zartman on Jan. 12, 1933. To this union three children were born. She is survived by her children - her daughter, Margaret Mary Boucher, and her husband, Ronnie, of Monett; her two sons, George Henry Zartman and his wife, Nancy, and Ralph Edward Zartman and his wife, Wilma, El Dorado Springs. Helen is also survived by a sister, Josephine Ungerman, of Berwin, Ill.; a brother, George Hlavacek, El Dorado Springs; three sisters-in-law, Pauline Hlavacek, Opal Hlavacek and Anna Whaley Peters, all of El Dorado Springs; nine grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.
Helen was preceded in death by her husband, John Ralph; her brothers, Vencil and J.F.; and her sisters - Mary Wright, Agnes Albertus and Anna Zartman.
Helen was proud to be a dairy farmer's wife for 48 years on the county line. Her happiest memories were of working on the farm, helping with milking and raising Jersey bucket calves.
She loved gardening and her flower gardens. Helen was an excellent cook and her children and grandchildren will remember kolaches forever.
Graveside services were held Monday afternoon, Sept. 27, 1999, at the Virgil City Cemtery with Rev. Kent Deubner officiating. Interment was in the Virgil City Cemetery under the direction of the Hackleman and Sons Funeral Home. Pallbearers were grandsons - Doug Tudor, Richard Tudor, Steven Zartman, Jason Zartman, Ronny Zartman and Robby Zartman.
